2008 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ((91-94ST), 92RP, 92WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep ruby. Lovely lift and purity to the aromas of cassis, violet and bitter chocolate. Juicy, vibrant and intense; less dense than the 2007 but more perfumed in the mid-palate. Very fine-grained wine, finishing long and aromatic, with firm tannic bite and a late note of bitter chocolate. 'Two thousand eight was an impossible year to make 15% wines with a 4.0 pH in Napa Valley,' said Bo Barrett, adding that 'it's more fun to be working in the classical world. In 2008, there's less jam to block the terroir and minerality of the vineyard. Due to all the sunlight, we made Cabernet jam in 2007, but the vineyard influence shows more clearly in 2008 and 2006.' The estate purchased some small tanks for this vintage and thus the team was able to pick with more precision. Barrett also told me he backed off on the pumpovers, relying

2008 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* With Pinot Noir, the magic trick is to have it taste sweet and ripe, and yet to finish bone dry. Few wineries in California accomplish this as regularly as Hanzell, and here they come again, with this wonderful 2008. It’s entirely consistent with their past history, being dry, a little tannic and tantalizingly rich in cherry, raspberry and cola fruit. Enjoyable now, with decanting, and should develop in the cellar over the next dozen years if not longer, based on the winery’s track record." 2008 Cade "Estate" Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Displaying an even more opaque purple color, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits a glorious nose of blueberries, black raspberries, plums, graphite and crushed rocks. This exquisite Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is about as good as it gets from these higher elevation vineyards on the eastern side of Napa Valley. A brilliant texture, stunning purity and great length make for a fabulous wine to drink over the next 20-25+ years. 2008 Walter Hansel "Cuvee Alyce" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: " Vivid red. Raspberry, white pepper and candied rose on the nose, with suave mineral and spice undertones. Lively, finely etched, nicely concentrated red fruit flavors expand and gain sweetness with air, picking up notes of red licorice, spicecake and rose pastille. Juicy and alluring wine with excellent finishing lift and clarity. This is delicious now but has the energy to reward at least another few years of bottle aging." (May/Jun '10)

2008 Williams Selyem "Westside Road Neighbors" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated red. Captivating aromas of cherry-cola, pepper, Indian spices, cocoa powder and sandalwood. Then intense, spicy and penetrating in the mouth, with vibrant raspberry and wild strawberry flavors dominating. Finishes pungent, spicy and long, with a palate-staining whiplash of flavor. This calls for another five years of aging. (ST)" (6/2010) 91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Generally among our favorite Williams Selyem Pinots, the Westside Road Neighbors bottling is, in this outing, a deep but slightly hidden wine. 2008 Carlisle Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

A huge, massive wine with abundant black and blue fruits intermixed with licorice, camphor, graphite and spicy background oak, this chewy, unfined/unfiltered Petite Sirah should be forgotten for 4-5 years, and drunk over the following 2+ decades. 2008 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (97RP, 95JS, 95ST, 95W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Monte Bello is striking. It is a decidedly muscular Monte Bello endowed with layers of dark fruit. Tobacco, mint, asphalt and crushed rocks develop in the glass, adding tons of complexity and finesse. A long, saline finish rounds things out beautifully. In 2008 the cold growing season stretched into October and the wine definitely has the feel of a cool vintage. The spring frost and the second year of drought conditions lowered yields significantly. Yields were just 1.25 tons per acre on average, but some of the older vineyards came in at less than 1 ton per acre. The balance of fruit, tannin and structure is simply extraordinary, but the wine needs time, most likely lots of it. In 2008 the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. 97+ (AG) " (08/2011)

There’s nothing ostentatiously voluptuous or sweet about this Bordeaux blend; instead it puts you in mind of field and forest. (AJ)" Wine Spectator: "Supple-textured and understated, with savory herb and dill-laced currant flavors that are distinctive and nuanced, ending with bell pepper and cedar notes. 93 points Wine Spectator: "Supple and plush, showing great depth, length and balance. Aromas of red currant, loam and olive lead to ripe flavors of plum, sweet mocha and spice. (TF)" (5/2011) K&L Notes: This is easily the best Merlot made in California every year. In 2003, Wine Spectator took that praise one step further, naming the 2001 vintage the Wine of the Year. The fruit for this wine comes from the Paloma estate, at the tippy top of Spring Mountain. This is a big, bold Merlot with sumptuous red stone fruit and spice, along with seamless tannins and a silky, mouthfilling texture.

Entirely dry, the Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is awesome in blackberry, cherry, cassis and oak flavors, with complexities of anise, soy sauce, grilled meats and minerals. 2008 Staglin "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Connoisseurs Guide: "The argument that wines with high ripeness lose their varietal and place-driven character is undone by Staglin year in and year out with its keenly focused aroma and flavors of currant, loam and cola augmented but never dominated by the caramelly richness of fancy oak barrels. Full on the palate, supple and somewhat fleshy, the wine is impeccably balanced and very polished at first glance. Yet, that polish only serves to sequester the solid layer of tannin that sits in the background and will keep things in fine fettle for a decade." (12/2010) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Smoky black raspberry and cherry-cola aromas display good clarity and mounting spiciness. Lush, creamy red ...Read More »

2008 Robert Biale "Thomann Station" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

93 points Wine Spectator: "There's terrific purity to the wild blackberry flavors, which are juicy, vibrant and ripe, with dense tannins, a tobacco leaf note and plenty of peppery, spicy notes. The tannins are firm and dense, especially on the finish. Drink now through 2019. (Web-2011)" K&L Notes: This is named after an old railway stop in St. Helena. Big, strapping, stick-to-your-ribs wine, and meant for the long haul and your beefiest dishes.

2008 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (97JS, 96ST, 95RP, 94WS). James Suckling: "This has a wonderful balance to it. It shows intense aromas of flowers and dark fruits with hints of incense and sandalwood. Changes all the time. Then goes to currants and flowers. Full and firm with a wonderful core of silky tannins that are polished and beautiful. Dark chocolate, vanilla bean, and dark fruit. Solid and firm. You could easy drink this but it has structure for aging as well. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Caberent Franc and 5% Merlot. (JS)" (06/2011)

2008 Saxum "Booker Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Booker Vineyard (92% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre, which had also been bottled immediately before my visit) has an opaque purple color and a wonderfully sweet nose of black cherry, black currant, licorice, incense, and some Asian spices. The wine has seamless lushness, a voluptuous texture, stunning purity, and a very long, 40-second-plus finish. Booker is another top site that I believe was planted with Justin Smith’s help. It is a 40-acre vineyard sitting on similar limestone soils. This incredible wine would probably benefit from a couple of years ...Read More »

2008 Radio-Coteau "Alberigi" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, bitter cherry, Asian spices and incense. Then suave and creamy in the mouth, with excellent energy and lift-and a jolt of minerality-to its red and dark berry flavors. Mounts impressively on the back half and coats the palate with spice and exotic floral qualities. Fine-grained tannins add grip to the long, sappy finish. Powerful but refined pinot noir with the depth and structure to age." (6/2010)

2008 Radio Coteau "Terra Neuma" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Pretty aromas of red fruits, licorice, black cardamom and flowers. Juicy, pure and fine, with good tang and energy to the raspberry and cherry flavors. A wine of finesse more than power, but very persistent and energetic on the back end, finishing with silky tannins and lingering minerality." (6/2010) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "**Outstanding** A moderately high-toned and exceptionally fresh nose of both red and blue Pinot fruit, raspberry and a hint of earth introduces rich, delicious and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess a dusty and mouth coa ...Read More »

2008 Williams Selyem "Precious Mountain" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* Tough, acidic and tight in youth, offering little in the way of richness. So tart, so minerally, so dry. A wine that demands time in the cellar. Should reward the patient after six years or so, to allow things to resolve so the cherry, cranberry and rhubarb flavors can transmogrify. It would not be surprising for this wine to develop bottle nuance for well more than a decade." (2/2011) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red. Crushed blackberry, raspberry, tobacco and nutty oak on the nose. Supple and velvety but a bit unforthcoming, with firm acidity framing the some ...Read More »

2008 Schramsberg "J Schram" North Coast Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a beautiful, complex and complete wine, from the delicate, spiced raspberry aroma through the creamy, nuanced finish. Subtle but well-defined fruit flavors like white cherry and raspberry pulse across the palate, buoyed by an ultrafine effervescence and lively acidity. But the texture is smooth around the edges, lending a sense of extra depth and layering to this extraordinary bottle. Just coming into its own now, it will improve through at least 2020. *Ranked #9 on Top 100 of 2017, Cellar Selection*" (3/2017) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Sleek and refined, with pretty strawbe ...Read More »

2008 Wind Gap "Armagh Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Syrah

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Glass-staining ruby. Heady aromas of cassis, blackberry liqueur, violet oil and olive are enhanced by exotic notes of Indian spices and woodsmoke that gain strength with air. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit flavors show impressive concentration but there's an unlikely elegance here too. Packs a serious punch and finishes silky and long, with lingering spiciness. (ST)" (5/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a cold site in the Petaluma wind gap, the 2008 Syrah Armagh Vineyard (less than 100 cases produced) reveals Northern Rhone-like aromas of bacon fat, tapenade and smoke.
