2011 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Top Pick!
2011 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Silver Oak's 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was carefully and selectively harvested over more than a month at the end of the cool 2011 growing season. Blended with 14.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Malbec, the varietal composition was determined early in the aging process and the blended lots were then aged in new American oak barrels for two full years. In keeping with Silver Oak's practice of releasing the wine only when it is ready to drink, the bottles were then aged an additional two years before release. From the winery... Read More »

2011 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Vinous: "Mount Eden's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a striking interplay of ripe, flamboyant fruit and supporting mountain structure. Fresh, vibrant and energetic to the core, this stunning, beautifully delineated Cabernet Sauvignon might need another decade to show the full breadth of its pedigree, but it's all there. Pinot Noir at Chardonnay get most of the attention and Mount Eden, yet the Cabernet can be every bit as intriguing, just as it is here. The blend includes 5% Merlot, 1% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot....Mount Eden and its sister estate Domaine Eden re ...Read More »

2011 Philip Togni "Estate" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $105) Top Pick!
2011 Philip Togni "Estate" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $105)

94 points Vinous: "Pine, menthol, savory herbs, licorice, dark cherry and plum notes emerge from the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. With time in the glass, the 2011 fleshed out beautifully while retaining a classic, mid-weight profile. My sense is that the 2011 will develop along the lines of the 1994, a wine that remains distinctly floral, savory and medium in body, with less of the explosiveness of years such as 1985 or 1997, but with tons of class and style. It is going to be interesting to find out. The 2011 was bottled just a few months ago, so I will not be surprised if it ...Read More »

2011 Joseph Swan "Zeigler Vineyard" Russian River Valley Zinfandel

Jospeh Swan began as a winemaking hobbyist in 1973, but with a little help from his friend Andre Tchelistcheff, he found that he had a true knack for creating outstanding wines. From the winery: "Medium deep garnet color. Aromas of dark berry compote with hints of fig, baking spices and black pepper. In the mouth the aromas are echoed but with a bit more brightness due to its excellent acidity. Still fairly tannic. Decanting and/ or opening a couple of hours ahead of drinking is highly recommended for this young pup!"

2011 Enkidu "Humbaba" North Coast Rhône Blend

A blend of 68% Syrah and 30% Petite Syrah with a splash of Alicante. From the producer: "The 2011 Humbabas shows its typical sweet root earthiness as in other vintages, which combine with candied cherries, toast and a little meatiness. While the texture is warm and luxurious, there is a nice backbone grip of tannin to hang the flavors on to a long finish. This Humbaba, like our previous vintages, continues to develop considerable complexity as it ages."

2011 Kosta Browne Russian River Valley Pinot Noir (Previously $90)

Juicy and penetrating, with superb inner-mouth perfume to its sweet red fruit and candied rose flavors. Becomes spicier with air and finishes with excellent clarity, breadth and persistence. (ST)" (6/2013) 90 points Vinous: "The 2011 Pinot Noir (Russian River) is a classic, juicy Russian River Pinot with gorgeous depth, striking aromatics and lovely overall balance. 2011 Au Bon Climat "Pioneering-Nuits Blanches au Bouge" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40)

93 points Vinous: "Au Bon Climat's 2011 Chardonnay Nuits-Blanches au Bouge is quite overt within the style of the year. Yellow stone fruit, honey, mint, butter, spices and wild flowers flesh out in a supple, expressive Chardonnay endowed with notable depth and intensity. The finish alone is utterly exquisite. Jim Clendenen makes a wide range of wines across several distinct labels. I was only able to taste a smattering of representative wines, but what I saw was terrific. 2011 Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Okay, so this is “only” Merry Edwards' regional blend. But don't dismiss it. Made from her greatest vineyards, including Flax, Meredith Estate and Coopersmith, it shows the linearity and elegance of her 2011s, without perhaps quite the concentation of the single-vineyard wines. Dry, tannic and brisk in acidity, the flavors are classic cool-climate rhubarbs, pomegranates, blackberry tea, dried herbs and cocoa. Give it up until 2020 to come around." 2011 Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Vinous: "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is beautiful. Dark red cherries, tobacco, mint and graphite are some of the many notes that inform this hugely attractive, medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. The finish is long, silky and exceptionally polished. Tobacco, dried cherries, mint and smoke add nuance on the close. This is another relatively soft, gorgeous 2011 from Keeenan. (AG)" (11/2013) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. It is a big, well-extracted, very substantial Pinot, to be sure, with abundant flavors of raspberries and sweet cherries, and it carries a strong imprint of rich oak. Its lengthy flavors are underpinned by a firm streak of tannin, and it ends with the kind of finishing grip that predicts a very good future." 2011 Ridge "Mazzoni Home Ranch" Sonoma County Zinfandel

From one of the best producers of Zinfandel in California. The 2011 vintage was long and cool, and required a steady hand in both vineyard and cellar. The crop was small, but the fruit produced a wonderfully aromatic and intense wine. The winemaker praised the ultimate result: "This wine exemplifies why we have a deep love of old vines. It's superbly complex, rich in structure—and at moderate ripeness! It is a wine to enjoy in any season, and will be at its best over the next six to eight years."

That said, it is still on the firm side with respect to structure and balance, and it narrows a bit at the finish, but its lively fruit stays the course and does not lag in the least. Match this one up with scallops in cream sauce if patience comes hard, but our recommendation is that ...Read More »

2011 Sojourn "Gap's Crown Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Marginally riper and a bit more ambitious than its two partners, the Gap's Crown Pinot makes Sojourn's efforts in 2011 a clean sweep of success. Although slightly bigger, it is no simple study in ripeness, and its deep, well-defined, long-lasting flavors are fixed first on fruit. It is very well-balanced with a firm streak of acidity that, if anything, provides a bit too much stiffening just now, and we do not see the wine hitting full stride for another few years at the least." (6/2013) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Pungent, sexy aromas of blackberry, mulberry, Indian sp ...Read More »

2011 Rhys "Family Farm Vineyard" San Mateo County Pinot Noir

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red. Black raspberry, cherry pit, Asian spices and smoky oak on the nose. Fine-grained and sappy, with strong lift to the flavors of dark raspberry, bitter cherry and blood orange. Finishes long, on a faintly medicinal note, with sweet harmonious tannins and lingering spiciness." (5/2013) 91 points Vinous: "The 2011 Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard is one of the wilder wines in this range of 2011 Pinots. Game, tar, licorice and dark fruits all take on an intensely mineral personality with distinct volcanic overtones reminiscent of Aglianico and Taurasi. The layered, e ...Read More »

2011 Sojourn Cellars "Rodgers Creek Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Powerful cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by anise, pungent herbs and rose oil. Lush and expansive, offering bitter cherry and blackberry flavors lifted by a subtle mineral nuance. Shows very good energy and focus on the finish, which leaves sweet dark fruit and spice notes behind. (ST)" (6/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium-weight, this pure and focused version offers good density to the red plum, black cherry, subtle spice and fresh earth notes. Drink now through 2020." (7/2013) K&L Notes: From the Pinot Report: "94 points. Deep ruby color; big, complex earthy ... Read More »

2011 Robert Biale "Monte Rosso" Sonoma Valley Zinfandel

The Monte Rosso Vineyard sits on privileged ground at the fog line overlooking the Sonoma Valley. In ages past, it was under the stewardship of Louis M. Martini that it became one of the most revered vineyard sources in California. The oldest Zinfandel vines in Monte Rosso date back to the late 1800s, and Robert Biale has bottled a very limited production from these vines since 1995. A wine of structure and distinction, to label this bottling "old vines" would simply be inadequate. From the winery: "In 2011 Monte Rosso brings its A-game. The cool and mod... Read More »

2011 Chasseur "Umino" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

From the now or soon-to-be-legendary, cool-weather 2011 vintage, Bill Hunter's Umino Pinot Noir has been called "sharply focused, perfumed" in Steven Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (5/2014), and "Very much biased to dried herbs and brush with an earthy note just off to the side," by Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine (2/2014). You can't please everybody, but the subtle aromas and palate textures noted of this release, from a serious, if somewhat under-the-radar Russian River Valley/Sonoma Coast Pinot producer, is bound to inspire interest, debate... 2011 Kamen Estate Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon New!
2011 Kamen Estate Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Vinous: "Graphite, smoke, dark red fruit, iron and a host of mineral-inflected notes jump from the glass in Kamen's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. There is tons of mountain personality in this dense, structured, powerful Cabernet. In 2011, Kamen did not produce their top of the line Kashmir; all of the best fruit went into the straight Cabernet Sauvignon. Proprietor Robert Kamen has put together a dream team at his rugged hillside vineyard, which is in the new Moon Mountain AVA. Phil Coturri takes care of the viticulture, while Mark Herold makes the wines. Is it any s ...Read More »

2011 Kistler "Dutton Ranch" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Crisp acids along with hints of Granny Smith apple skins, poached pear, brioche and white peach aromas jump from the glass of the medium to full-bodied, flattering, sexy 2011 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch. Slightly softer than some of its siblings (which I assume means it has less acidity), it, too, should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. There has been a progressive trend by Kistler’s winemaking team and owners to harvest at slightly lower sugars, back off slightly on the percentage of new oak used, and bottle their wines earlier. All of this is designed to ...Read More »

2011 Kosta Browne "Keefer Ranch" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

95 points Connoisseurs Guide: "*Three Stars* We have often found a singular and very identifiable purity to the fruit of Russian River's best Pinot sites, and this lovely version from Keefer Ranch is perfect example of just that. It is optimally ripened and very rich right from the first with a long and very deep complement of juicy, red-cherry fruit, and its teasing suggestions of sweet oak and dried flowers only make a good thing even better. It manages to be lively and lithe and fairly substantial all at once, and its lengthy, amazingly vital finish further marks it as a decidedly ...Read More »
