2013 Pied á Terre Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

Richard Luftig worked 20+ years in NYC as a professional wine buyer. His winery, Pied á Terre (foot to earth) was born out of his love for wine and his frustration at not being able to find an affordable, high quality Cabernet from California. Truly a labor of love, Richards says, "It is not a path easily traveled. I am not producing Pied à Terre for financial gain. Rather, I am doing so because nothing is more satisfying than introducing wine lovers to a great bottle of wine, and one that is also very reasonably priced. This is both my vocation as a w... 1984 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

BV's flagship wine, which is named for the founder of Beaulieu Vineyard, from the warm vintage of 1984. According the the winery's collectors' notes, the wine shows a maturing, medium full ruby-garnet color: "The bouquet is nicely elegant, with mint, berry and sweet cherry aromas that show more richness and depth than the palate. The flavors are slightly stewed (it was a warm vintage), yet also a bit acidic, while showing quite a lot of fullness." In 2009, wine writer Richard Jennings had similar notes: "Medium red color with pale meniscus; intriguing sa... Read More »

1997 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness, there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and fruit intensity, and stunning purity. It is a perfect expression of Napa viticulture and wine that should continue to age effortlessly for two decades or more. (RP)" (11/2013) 97 points Wine Spectator: "Dense, rich and focused, youthful and concentrated, with hints of maturity on the edge of the core cur ...Read More »

1997 Caymus "Special Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Wine & Spirits: "(no tasting note given)" (6/2001) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages." (12/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at 'The Sampler' icon tasting in London. The nose is still very closed but begins to open with aeration with burnt match, tertiar ...Read More »

This prodigious effort should continue to drink well for 20+ years. (RP)" (12/2013) 96 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Once again showing the extraordinary combination of polish, fruity depth and wonderfully rich oak that is particular to the very best of the Insignia lineup, this conc ...Read More »

2009 Big Basin Vineyards "Alfaro Family Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Alfaro Family Vineyard shows gorgeous up-front richness, much of which comes from the Dijon clones. Dark cherries, flowers menthol, licorice and violets come together nicely in this juicy, ripe Pinot. The 2009 was fermented with 10% whole clusters and aged for 16 months in French oak, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." (8/2011) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid red. 2007 Big Basin Vineyards "Fairview Road Ranch" Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah

91 points Vinous: "Deep ruby-red. Pungent, expressive bouquet displays blackberry, boysenberry, cracked pepper and smoky mineral scents, with nuances of pipe tobacco and herbs adding complexity. Broad and sweet but also spicy, with tangy red and dark berry flavors and a sexy suggestion of candied flowers. Closes down on the finish, with the spice and pepper notes repeating. This benefited from air and should be even better with a few more years of bottle aging. (JR)" (11/2009) 90 points Wine Spectator: "This intense, firm red is marked by full-bodied, beefy currant, cranberry, herb and sage flavors th ...Read More »

2007 Peay Vineyards "Les Titans" Estate Sonoma Coast Syrah

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky violet. Powerful aromas of crushed blackcurrant, violet, black pepper and olive. Lush and sappy, with deeply concentrated black and blue fruit and spice flavors energized by smoky minerality. Nothing thick or heavy about this wine, which packs a real punch. Finishes with enticing spicy lift and very good persistence. This should be even better with a bit of bottle age." (6/2010)

2013 Williams Selyem "Precious Mountain Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

94 points Vinous: "A deep, powerful wine, the 2013 Pinot Noir Precious Mountain Vineyard exudes structure. Dark cherry, plum and rose petal open up first, followed by a distinctive blood orange/citrus note that adds brightness. The Precious Mountain delivers tremendous flavor intensity and sinewy power, although it is quite clear the wine needs time. The only question is how much. This is a very strong showing from Williams Selyem. (AG)" (8/2016) K&L Notes: According to the winery: "Dark berry notes mingle with fennel seed, anise and grilled herbs. A hint of lavender lifts the nose of ... Read More »
