94 points Sam Kim: "This is stunning. The bouquet is beautifully perfumed, displaying blue/blackberry, floral, game and spice notes with elegantly infused cedary oak. It's concentrated, succulent and supple on the palate with velvety texture, finishing extremely long, backed by plenty of cushioned tannins. A young beauty showing excellent harmony and integration, making it so approachable now but will no doubt age with grace."93 points Bob Campbell: "Few wines manage to be rich (big, mouth-filling and mellow) and vibrant (tangy, bright, fresh and full of energy) but Craggy Range Syrah somehow manage ...Read More »
From the winery: "The nose leads with cinnamon, vanilla and more red fruits than the typical dark cherry from this warmer 2013 vintage. A soft and comforting mouthfeel that is broad and expansive. Being a blend of our three Bannockburn vineyards, this contributes various layers of generous ripe fruits and creamy textural elements. The wine has a pleasant rusticity to the structure adding complexity and depth. Hints of liquorice on the long enveloping finish."
98 points Bob Campbell: "No notes (yet) for the 2014 vintage, but the notes for the 2013 vintage: "Block 5 lives up to its exalted reputation in what appears to have been an excellent Central Otago vintage. A fragrant, almost floral nose with a the scent of dark berries, violet and wildflowers. Concentrated flavours on the palate with a stronger fruit focus together with a savoury, spicy influence. Obviously youthful but still approachable although the wine appears to have hidden depths that will be revealed in time. A smooth, rich texture adds appeal while a lengthy finish indi ...Read More »
Another highly praised offering from Felton Road, the Cornish point regularly garners 90-95 point scores in Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. The 2014 has yet to be reviewed.
96 points Bob Campbell: "Attractively scented wine with plum, dark berry, briar, herbs, licorice, violet and spicy oak. Concentrated fruit flavours dominate but get good support from a savoury undercurrent. Richly textured wine with impressive power demonstrated in a lingering finish." (7/2015)96 points James Suckling: "A bolder wine that has a little more new oak, some swirling herbs and spices, very complex and concentrated wine here. Bright red cherries, slightly tarry almost, more savory and cryptic with less emphasis on the red fruits. There's a darker cherry thread of fruit, the spices are more evide ...Read More »
96 points Bob Campbell: "Scented, savoury aroma with tantalising sweet plum, rich spices, wet earth and Bovril character. The wine offers an intriguing mix of fruit and alcohol sweetness balanced by ripe tannins to give a gently drying finish. Deliciously drinkable now but with good potential." (7/2015) K&L Notes: The Felton Road Calvert has a fantastic track record with the critics, with the 2006 through 2013 vintages all scoring from 90 to 94 points in Wine Spectator, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Steven Tanzer. And the 2014 is off to a great start with praise from Bob Campbell.
