2015 Powell & Son "Loechel" Shiraz Eden Valley South Australia

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Coming from the western section of a single vineyard in Eden Valley, the 2015 Loechel Shiraz from Eden Valley has a deep garnet-purple color and a gorgeous floral nose of roses and violets, with a whole array of baking spice-laced red and black fruit preserves emerging, plus some hints of cedar and chocolate box. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is youthfully taut, firm and muscular, possessing a solid structure of grainy tannins and lively acidity, finishing with those glorious baking spice layers coming through. 2013 Yalumba "Triangle Block" Shiraz-Viognier Eden Valley South Australia Top Pick!
2013 Yalumba "Triangle Block" Shiraz-Viognier Eden Valley South Australia

93 points Wine & Spirits: "A modern take on an old-fashioned style of Eden Valley Shiraz, this is bold in flavor but not at all massive - more about stamina and grace than density and weight. Its flavors of red currants, jasmine and tar have forthright power, a zesty blast of Shiraz spice that leaves a clean, fresh taste in its wake. This performs far above its price, a wine to buy by the case and enjoy this winter into spring." (2/2017) 90 points Vinous: "Deep, lurid ruby. Ripe dark berries, cherry pit and a hint of licorice on the smoke-tinged nose and in the mouth. Shows good depth and gentle sweet ...Read More »

Medium to full-bodied and very finely textured with silken, fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, it has wonderful length and depth. 2014 Torbreck "Woodcutter's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

93 points James Halliday: "It struts its stuff in most impressive fashion; black berried fruits, anise, wood spice, all served sweet and voluptuous, with fresh red berries as the icing." (8/2016) 93 points James Suckling: "A beautiful expression of shiraz from Barossa with a freshness and linear length to it. Medium to full body, fine and intense. Spice and meat character is all here. Just hint of peanuts. Drink now. Screw cap." (10/2016) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "For an entry-level wine, this is excellent. Succulent, rich and powerful, with predominantly black fruits and some spice. The hallmarks are its supple mouthfeel and effortless balance." 2015 Hentley Farm Shiraz Barossa Valley

This is where the wine drinker really is the winner. It's thick with flavour but remains buoyant, even jolly, with life. Tannin too shirks no issues whatsoever. Barossa at its best." Handpicked, partial whole bunch and remainder whole berry open-fermented, matured in French oak (33% new) for 14 months. A super-fragrant red cherry bouquet, with notes of mulberry, licorice and plum joining the vibrant red fruits of the palate, backed by firm, precisely framed tannins." 2003 d'Arenberg "The Dead Arm" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia (375ml)

A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely. (RP)" (10/2005)

At age 23, it reminds me of the way it tasted around 9 years of age. Inky/purple to the rim with an extraordinary perfume of sweet licorice, crushed pepper, blackberry liqueur, camphor, and barbecue spices, this sensationally full-bodied, concentrated, layered 1986 is still an infant in terms of its ultimate potential. 1981 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1981 stood out as slightly superior. Winemaker John Duval always felt this was a tannic style of Grange, but the wine has shed its tannins, and this is one of the few vintages where the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was above 10%. Sweet notes of creme de cassis, cedarwood, charcoal, and barbecue spices are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine displaying heady amounts of alcohol, glycerin, and density in its full-bodied, skyscraper-like texture. I was drinking this wine with great pleasure in the mid-nineties, yet here it is nearly 15 years late ...Read More »

2008 Glaetzer "Amon-Ra" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

96 points James Halliday: "Dense purple-crimson; the bouquet is redolent of black fruits and licorice, the full-bodied palate a masterpiece of winemaking, rich and thickly textured on the mid-palate, then slimming down on the finish, with savoury notes inviting the next glass." (1/2010) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2008 Amon-Ra opens with profound aromas of black berry compote, baking spices, smoked bacon with a whiff of anise and some fertile loam. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated with very full and rich warm berry flavors lifted by very lively acid. The tannins are m ...Read More »

2004 Two Hands "Lily's Garden" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even better than the Harry & Edward’s Garden is the 2004 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. With this cuvee, about 25% new American oak is added to the regime of French wood. Full-bodied with stunning, dusty, loamy soil characteristics interwoven with blackberry, cassis, cherry, and plum-like fruit, this rich, pure, intense Shiraz should be consumed over the next 10-12+ years. (RP)" (10/2006) 94 points James Halliday: "Dense colour; gloriously generous blackberry and dark chocolate fruit; firm structure and tannin backbone." 2005 Elderton Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Shiraz "Nuriootpa" is purple/black with a brooding nose of smoke, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied and voluptuous, it is dense and concentrated, with gobs of spicy black fruit flavors. It will evolve for 3-5 years and drink well through 2020." 90 points Wine Spectator: "Smooth and focused, with a peppermint edge to the red cherry and blackberry flavors, finishing with a layer of sweet spices. Drink now through 2013." (2/2009) K&L Notes: Elderton is also organic and solar-powered. It's one of Australia's two carbon neutral wineries! It was founded in 1982 aft... Read More »
