2012 Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana Top Pick!
2012 Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana

97 points Vinous: "The 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve, a selection of the estate's best fruit, presents a darker, more virile expression of Sangiovese. Here, too, the purity of the flavors is truly striking. Cinnamon, cloves, new leather, licorice and plums are some of the notes that soar from the glass. The 2012 is full-bodied and voluptuous, in classic Flaccianello style, but the new French oak is much better integrated than it often is at this stage, the result of a move to lower toast levels over the last few years. This is one of the finest young Flaccianellos I can re ...Read More »

2010 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino (1.5L)

96 points James Suckling: "Aromas of wet earth, meat and dried fruits. Some nuts and spices. Complex. Full body, with super fine tannins and fabulous intensity and richness. Dried cherry and candied citrus fruit. Fabulous finish. You want to drink this now. But shows superb finesse and intensity. Why wait?" (12/2014) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Saturated with cherry, raspberry, spice and tobacco aromas and flavors, this strikes a balanced between the supple texture, succulent acidity and refined yet gripping tannins. Really sings on the lingering finish. Best from 2019 through 2035." (4/2015) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Intense berry, viol ...Read More »

2010 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $110) Top Pick!
2010 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $110)

95 points James Suckling: "What a wine with salty, savory, light milk chocolate and iron character. It's full body, super integrated tannins and a long, long finish. It just makes you jump to attention. So lively and gorgeous. Drink or hold." (1/2015) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tassi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Franci opens to medium body and savory tones of Indian spice, dried fruit, licorice and dark cola. The balsam herb intensity is very attractive. This wine veers toward the ethereal and away from the obvious fruit and berry tones you get with less sophisticated Sangiovese. 95 points James Suckling: "Captivating aromas of blueberries, raspberries, violets and orange peel. Full body with crazy tannins." (9/2013) 94 points Vinous: "The 2011 Giorgio Primo is just as beautiful today as it was last year, even if it has barely budged since then. Blackberry jam, spices, licorice, smoke and new leather meld together in a seamless voluptuous wine endowed with superb depth and pure textural richness. The oak still needs time to integrate, but there is a lot to look forward to here. 2010 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino (1.5L)

96 points James Suckling: "Fabulous aromas of oranges, peaches and mahogany follow through to a full body with rich, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is dense, tight, powerful, compressed and incredibly structured. Needs four to five years of bottle age to come out of its dormancy." (1/2015) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a ripe and fruit-forward expression that bursts with energy and red fruit intensity even at this young stage in the wine's life. Thick layers of cherry, blackberry, cassis, vanilla and cinnamon give the wine a bold, opulent personality. The tann ...Read More »

2007 Giuseppe Quintarelli Rosso Cà del Merlo

Praise for the winemaker from Wine Advocate: "Giuseppe Quintarelli's passing earlier this year left a huge void in the wine world that isn't likely to ever be filled. Veneto is a fascinating region with tons of untapped potential, yet only one or two other producers have managed to make hypnotic, life-changing wines such as those that are found in these tiny cramped cellars in Negrar. At their best, Quintarelli's wines had no equal. I only hope the estate continues the tradition of making these idiosyncratic, compelling wines." (02/2011) 55% Corvina and ... Read More »

2011 Altesino "Montosoli" Brunello di Montalcino

94 points James Suckling: "A very ripe style with prune, berry and salted-nut aromas and flavors. Full body, savory intensity and a long, flavorful finish. Lots of juicy, fabulous fruit. Shows the greatness of the vineyard." (10/2015) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli provides us with one of the most beautiful tastes of Brunello in 2011. The secret here is that fruit is sourced from the Montosoli cru in the northern side of the appellation that performed very nicely in this warm vintage. 2012 Elio Grasso "Ginestra Casa Maté" Barolo

96 points Vinous: "Dark, rich, and enveloping, the 2012 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè wraps around the palate with serious intensity. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched throughout. Plum, black cherries, menthol, licorice and cloves build to the voluptuous, explosive finish. The Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè is another wine that is going to require considerable time in bottle, but it is fabulous, even at this very early stage. The Casa Matè is one of the most vivid, dramatic Barolos of the vintage. Better in 2020." (3/2016) 95 points Vinous: "A great example of site, the 2012 Barolo Cannubi is deep, sensual and beautifully perfumed. The aromatics and pure, creamy texture of Cannubi comes through loud and clear. Just coming around now.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. (Web Only--2007) (JS)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa is a full and generous interpretation of the vintage with an inky dark appearance and articulate aromas of spice, leather, Graham cracker and dried fruit. 2011 Casanova di Neri "Tenuta Nuova" Brunello di Montalcino

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a deeply layered expression with bold tones of dark fruit that are softened and enhanced by spice, leather, tobacco and balsam herb. The wine is very beautiful and polished with slightly less depth and complexity compared the outstanding (100 point) vintage that precedes it. 2011 Isole e Olena "Collezione Privata" Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana

96 points Vinous: "96+ points. The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata is superb. Black cherry jam, crème de cassis, smoke, plums, menthol, licorice and violets form a stunning backdrop as the 2011 opens up in the glass. Sumptuous and layered yet also quite fresh (especially for the year), the 2011 possesses superb balance and exceptional finesse. The intensity of the fruit nearly buries the tannins, but they are there. My impression is that the 2011 will offer a long and wide window of pure drinking pleasure. 2011 Rivella Barbaresco "Montestefano"

93 points Vinous: "93+: The 2011 Barbaresco Montestefano presents more depth and darkness than the straight Barbaresco, but the two wines aren't that different, which is common in warmer vintages that tend to flatten out vineyard differences. Part of this fruit was fermented in French oak barrels that confer added depth, volume and tannin, none of which Montestefano lacks, in my view. As such, the 2011 could use a few years in bottle to fully come together. It is deeply impressive today, though. That much is obvious. Hints of sage, smoke, lavender and dried flowers add nua ...Read More »

(JS)" (7/2004) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Barolo Bricco Rocche is fragrant with important aromas of roses, anisette, and cinnamon. 2012 Elio Grasso "Gavarini Chiniera" Barolo

96 points Vinous: "The 2012 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is one of the most beautiful, precise wines of the vintage. Finely cut and chiseled, the Gavarini exudes energy and tension, both signatures of this high-altitude, Monforte site. Crushed flowers, dark red berries, mint, and crushed rocks are some of the signatures. So many 2012s are open-knit, but Grasso's Gavarini is going to need at least several years in barrel. If anything, the 2012 is a bit austere, but I say that in the best sense of the word. Exotic, alluring and totally stunning, the 2012 is a real knock-out. (AG ...Read More »

2008 Mastrojanni "Schiena d'Asino" Brunello di Montalcino

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of Montalcino’s most sought-out wines, this 2008 is an outstanding effort. It opens with earthy notes of black berries, tilled soil, underbrush, leather, tobacco and prune. The succulent palate reveals juicy wild cherry and black raspberry energized by notes of white pepper, licorice and thyme. Still young and tannic, it should develop beautifully. Drink 2015–2028." (5/2014) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From one of Montalcino’s most celebrated single-vineyards, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d’Asino (“donkey’s back”) comes from a one-hectare hillside crest that runs ...Read More »

2009 Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Classico Superiore

92 points Vinous: "Black cherries, plums, graphite, tapenade, melted road tar and game hits the palate as Romano Dal Forno's 2009 Valpolicella Superiore shows off its personality. The 2009 brings together the signature richness of a wine made from 100% dried fruit with distinctly wild, almost Syrah-like overtones. Inky and intense, with considerable tannic backbone, the 2009 is really more of a junior Amarone than a Valpolicella. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable.
