2008 Rodano "Monna Claudia" Toscana

Fattoria Rodano only produces 500 cases of this super Tuscan blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Sangiovese. Grapes were hand-harvested from the organically certified Viacosta vineyard which features 35-45 year old vines with a beautifully situated, south-facing amphitheater-like exposure. For a luxurious touch, the wine was aged in 60% new French barriques before bottling.

It is then matured for 6 months in 500 liter neutral French oak barrels.

A big, broad shouldered wine, the 2008 captures the personality of the year in its cool, mineral-inflected flavors. Graphite, grilled herbs, smoke and melted road tar all blossom from the glass. Then juicy and fresh on the palate, with ripe red fruit and spice flavors nicely supported by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Finishes with a whiplash of red berries, cherry syrup and minerals. With its early accessibility and considerable uncomplicated appeal, this is hard to put down.
