1997 Castello Banfi "Poggio all'Oro" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark ruby red. Aromas of blackberry, dried flowers and cherry. Very intense and concentrated nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long flavorful finish. Lots of light vanilla and crushed dark fruits on the finish. Solid now, but better with age. (Web-2007)" 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rock solid and compact. This wine is true-blue Brunello, meant to be cellared for 10 or more years. Flavors of plum, cherry and currant are pure, and there’s far more fruit here than wood. But the tannins are like nails and they get harder and harder with each sip. Yes, it’s a top-flight Brunel ...Read More »

1997 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

98 points Wine Spectator: "Absolutely gorgeous nose, with plum, Indian spices and blackberry. Full-bodied, with lots of dark chocolate, spices and vanilla. This is so young. Wonderfully silky and refined. I always loved the mint, berry and spice character in this wine and the layers of fruit and fine tannins. Amazing.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best from 2009 through 2020. (2007)" K&L Notes: The fruit is bursting from the glass of this incredible Brunello showing very warm, ripe red fruit aromatics with hints of sweet vanillin. It is very big and ripe on the palate but countered by a c... Read More »

2001 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

97 points Wine Spectator: "Wonderfully perfumed, with rose, blackberry and a hint of wet earth. Full-bodied, with layers of silky tannins and a long, long finish. Structured. Hard not to drink now, but will be even better with a little more bottle age." (4/2007) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, dark ruby-red. A v ibrant Brunello with crisp, mineral-tinged aromas of violet, sour red cherry, pipe tobacco and licorice, all lifted by a note of citrussy white pepper. Nicely delineated and sweet on the palate, with strong raspberry and hazelnut notes dominating. This subtle and deceptively concentrated wine finis ...Read More »

2006 Terre de' Trinci "Ugolino" Sagrantino di Montefalco

Jancis Robinson: "Considered a riserva from a 45-year-old vineyard with ridiculously low yields of 30 hl. Vineyards in Montefalco and Bevagna, and the cantina is in Foligno. Beautiful mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Savoury more than fruity at the moment and a little locked up on the nose. Yet it has a supple palate and not heavy at all. Rich tannins on the finish. Aged for at least 18 months in new barrique, which is pretty amazing, because you hardly notice it on the nose. It may have added more tannins, whereas with less new oak you would have had a reall ...Read More »

2006 Il Poggione "Vigna Paganelli" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is huge, powerful and totally implosive. The seductive allure of the 2007 is nowhere to be found. Instead, the 2006 is built on a serious spine of formidable tannin and dark red/black fruit. Hints of tar, licorice, rose petals and tobacco inform the powerful, virile finish. The 2006 is going to require considerable patience, but it is clearly a jewel of a wine, even at this early stage. 2004 Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve is super elegant, polished and impeccably refined, just as it always has been. At the same time, it is one of the bigger 2004s from Tuscany readers will come across. Dark red berries, flowers, spices and menthol are layered into the finish. Today the aromatics aren’t fully developed, but that should not be an issue in another few years. There is plenty of underlying structure to support many years of fine drinking. The quality of the tannins is particularly fine, especially next to the other great Flaccianellos. (AG) ...Read More »

2004 Villa Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (Previously $55)

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Poggio Salvi’s Brunello Riserva offers genuine and linear fruit tones with bright berry and cherry layers lavished over spice and leather. The wine is tonic and tight in the mouth with lingering notes of spice and smoke on the close." (8/2010) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is surprisingly hard and unyielding. Mentholated, balsamic notes add complexity to the dark fruit, followed by earthiness, leather; licorice and tobacco that emerge over time. There is nice depth and plushness to the fruit, but readers will need to be patient. (AG)" (4/2010)

1999 Fanti (Tenuta San Filippo) Brunello di Montalcino

98 points Wine Spectator: "Very dark in color, with aromas of raisin, blackberry jam, espresso and nuts. Full-bodied, with loads of powerful fruit and big, velvety tannins. Superconcentrated, layered and dense, with the structure of a great 1945 claret, such as Latour. Still a blockbuster. Spellbinding. Needs a little time. (Web Only-2010)" 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino, good as it is, is rather perplexing. 2001 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona "Vigna di Pianrosso" Brunello di Montalcino

Though tempting to drink today, it will be even better in a few years and will drink well to age twenty. It is one of the vintage’s great wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021. Chunky plum pervades the chewy, dark palate, which offers a gorgeous mouthfeel and admirable depth. Only on the finish do you get a slight hint of oak. Overall it’s entirely solid and very likable, but as good as it is, it’s not quite on the level of the ’98 or ’99, which were amazing. (MS)" (11/2003) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Ornellaia (magnum) is a pretty, well-balanced offering with good concentration and complexity. 2001 i Verbi Brunello di Montalcino

Wine Enthusiast: "(published under Verbena labelling) Burnt coffee, black tar, cherry cola, almond paste, stewed strawberries and a note of rubber create a dramatic, slightly over-the-top Brunello. There’s a viscous fullness to the mouth that makes a good match for the wine’s fruity, clean finish." (4/2006) K&L Notes: I Verbi is a label of Nannetti Luca who also produces Verbena Brunello di Montalcino. In fact, the wines are the same and the i Verbi labelling often has a Verbena cork.

2003 Tenuta San Guido "Sassicaia" Bolgheri

96 points Wine & Spirits: "Great terroirs often prove themselves in the most extreme vintages, as Sassicaia has done in the violent heat of 2003. The vineyard produced a supple, subtle and elegant wine. To describe the fruit character one might resort to analogies with black currant and smoky black tea, but it's more a textural experience for now, a mass of pleasure, hard to grasp. Its oak treatment delivers the kind of heady richness found in young Latour; its soil character provides a completely different context, though no less grand. Probably best starting at ten to fifteen ye ...Read More »

Almost rustic, but hell, it's a beauty. (JS)" (10/2003) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Solaia, not unexpectedly, is the best wine of the series with expansive aromas of black currants, thyme, and sage, much eucalyptus and chocolate on the palate along with ripe, sweet fruit, and a sizeable finish. Aromas of black cherry, ripe red berries, licorice, dried flowers and spices are a bit aromatically compressed owing to the vintage's hot weather. Sweet and rather soft on entry (again due to 2000's warm weather), then nicely stuffed with surprisingly energetic red fruit in the middle. The broad finish features repeating, lingering flavors of ripe red cherry and licorice. A very successful 2000 Brunello. Very long and powerful on the finish. Almost Port-like. Hints of vanilla and sultana. A top Bricco Rocche. Best after 2012." (6/2008) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This excellent Barolo from Ceretto’s Bricco Rocche estate represents a perfect marriage between grape and winemaking. A huge, hulking wine, the 2003 boasts tons of depth and pure volume. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin. The wine is simply glorious, that's all there is to it. Layers of dark fruit meld into smoke, leather, violets, menthol, earthiness and tar as this profound wine opens up in the glass.
