2005 Elio Altare "Ceretta Vigna Bricco" Barolo

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright deep red. Complex nose melds dark cherry, tobacco, coffee and a hint of exotic fruits, with almost peppery lift. Silky and fine-grained but at the same time penetrating, showing terrific sappy energy to its dark fruit, pepper and tobacco flavors. With its light touch, this reminded me of a Chambolle Amoureuses. Finishes with firm tannins and a sexy hint of game. This can be enjoyed now or cellared. (ST)" (11/2011) 94 points Vinous: "Here in its first vintage, the 2005 Barolo Cerretta is another wine that has held up remarkably. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spices and men ...Read More »

2006 Elio Altare "Ceretta Vigna Bricco" Barolo

96 points Wine Spectator: "Fresh and aromatic, this red is packed with sweet cherry, leather, clove and iron flavors. Fused to a bed of stiff, mouthcoating tannins, with a long aftertaste of sweet spice and mineral. Still a baby, but well-balanced and beginning to develop. (BS)" (3/2013)

2007 Teresa Raiz Decano Rosso (Previously $30)

This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc, aged one year in Allier oak barrels. Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, the easternmost region in Italy, lies just east of Venice leaning against the Slovenian and Croatian borders. It is home to many small wineries including one of our favorites, Ermacora. Most of the famous wines produced in Friuli (the everyday usage of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia) are white but over the past couple of decades the quality of reds has jumped considerably.

2001 Avignonesi Desiderio

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Desiderio, Merlot with a bit of Cabernet in the blend, is simply the best in the history of the house, blackish in tone and with purple highlights, warm and intense in aroma with perfectly ripe black berry fruit, sandalwood, cinnamon, and vanilla, very broad and rich on the palate, sizeable, sweet, and gratifying. Drink: 2005-2020." (04/05)

2008 Francesco Rinaldi "Cannubbio" Barolo

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Barolo Cannubbio exhibits all of the classic notes typically found in wines from this site. Sweet, open floral notes lead to tobacco, leather, anise and spices as this gorgeous Barolo shows off its class. There is more than enough fruit to balance the tannins, but the 2008 remains tight and in need of further cellaring. Still, there is so much to admire in this classy, mid-weight Barolo. In 2008, the Cannubbio is all class and finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038." (10/2012)

2003 Marchesi di Barolo "Estate Vineyard" Barolo

Wine Enthusiast: "Vigne di Proprietà is an estate-grown wine with dark concentration and distinctive aromas of black cherry and mature fruit (likely explained by the hot vintage). The wine offers chewy fullness and opulence backed by sweet spice flavors and velvety tannins. It has power too and the alcohol definitely shows as the wine warms in the glass." (4/2009)

2001 Poggio Nardone Brunello di Montalcino

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Here is a vanilla- and cedar-infused wine that sparked discord among our panelists. One loved its complexity and spicy notes layered over ripe fruit, while another took issue with its stewiness. Plush tannins and fruit glide over a long finish." (4/2006) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of ripe fruit, jam and cedar follow through to a full-bodied palate, with a slightly earthy undertone. Beautiful and rich. Coffee and berry. Decadent. Best after 2007." (4/2006) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Dark and concentrated, this is a lovely, soft Brunello with pure cherry fruit. The long, fragrant finish will add depth to r ...Read More »

Subtle wood shadings appear in the background of bright cherry and blackberry. Overall, what distinguishes this wine is its sense of focus, sharpness and purity." (03/09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Shows bright berry, earth, mushroom and leather on the nose. Full-bodied, with very ripe, almost raisiny fruit. Spiced, mentholated notes develop in the glass, lending a distinctly balsamic air to the Bussia. The 2008 boasts superb depth through to the dazzling finish. (AG)" (4/2012)

(JS)" (7/2009) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The estate’s 2005 Barolo Cicala is a transparent, mid-weight wine redolent of dark fruit, spices, minerals and licorice, all of which come together in the glass with superb elegance. Deep plum flavor mingles with cherry jam, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee bean; very fresh and clear. The wine offers a superb sense of depth and harmony on the middle palate, and the tannins are firm but ripe. The long, silky finish is graced by an undercurrent of anise. 2004 Luigi Einaudi "Nei Cannubi" Barolo

It reveals a richly concentrated personality with the compelling perfumed inner sweetness that is the hallmark of this great vineyard. The wine offers terrific energy and structure, with gorgeous, silky tannins that round out the sweet, lingering finish. The Cannubi was still in oak when I tasted it in mid-November 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024." (12/2007) 92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. Musky, carnal nose hints at excellent vinosity but is currently dominated by oak. 1964 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Riserva (1.5L)

93 points Vinous: "I had never tasted Bruno Giacosa’s 1964 Barolo Riserva Speciale. It was a very beautiful, delicate Barolo with pretty notes of mint, anise, licorice and beef bouillon. It showed greater structure and power than the Bartolo Mascarello that followed. Unfortunately this wine was never better than when it was first opened. With time it lost some of its freshness and sheer sexiness. Bartolo Mascarello’s 1964 Barolo (1.9 liter magnum) was the exact opposite. Initially quite funky and rustic, it needed several hours of air to open up. When it did, it was a fant ...Read More »
