2014 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana Top Pick!
2014 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana

91 points James Suckling: "Silky and savory red with light chocolate, cedar and berry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Subtle and pretty. Drink now or hold. Delicious." (7/2016) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Warm tones of ripe cherry, loam and sweet spice give way to a dense, muscular structure in this solid red. Succulent and long. Enjoy this while the fruit is still present. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2020. (BS)" (3/2017)

2016 Silvano Follador Prosecco Superiore Brut Nature Top Pick!
2016 Silvano Follador Prosecco Superiore Brut Nature

Just a note to clear up some nomenclature issues with this brand: Silvano Follador has added an extra word to their label, "Nature." It means that the finished wine has less than 3 grams per liter of residual sugar, even though their wines are Brut, and Brut can be decidedly higher. Nature is a designation that is more definitive. Most Prosecco is Extra Dry and that is 12-20 grams per liter which could go from dry-ish to outright sweet. Follador is looking to distance themselves from the rest of the pack, and in this vintage the residual sugar is 0.0%.

2013 Barone Ricasoli "Brolio" Chianti Classico Top Pick!
2013 Barone Ricasoli "Brolio" Chianti Classico

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Here is Barone Ricasoli's bread and butter wine. Some 600,000 bottles of the 2013 Chianti Classico Brolio were made and all the fruit that goes into this wine is estate-grown. This is a powerhouse wine in terms of production numbers and the 2013 vintage is an especially delicious one. I highly recommend this excellent value wine. The wine shows crunchy tannins and youthful fruit nuances with bright cherry and blackberry. The mouthfeel is generous and fresh. (ML)" (10/2015) 90 points James Suckling: "A red with dried fruits and burnt orange peel. Full body, firm tannins and a silky f ...Read More »

2016 Arnaldo Caprai "Grecante" Grechetto Top Pick!
2016 Arnaldo Caprai "Grecante" Grechetto

91 points James Suckling: "A dense white with a lightly chewy texture and lots of dried apple and pear character. Full body. Flavorful and beautiful. Tangy acidity at the end. Drink now." (10/2017) K&L Notes: In the Renaissance tradition, there are many wines defined as "Greci, Grecanti, Grechetti." The Grecante of Montefalco was among the celebrated wines of this variety and was historically given as a precious gift by farmers to the princes and cardinals of the community. Arnaldo Caprai keeps this tradition alive in this 100% Grechetto, delightful, medium-bodied and fresh white, characterize... Read More »

2015 Cascina Val del Prete "Serra de Gatti" Barbera d'Alba

Vinous: "Cascina Val del Prete's Barbera d'Alba Serra de' Gatti is always a fun, tasty wine, as it is again in 2015. Drink this juicy, flamboyant Barbera over the next few years while the cherry, plum, new leather and sweet spice flavors retain their youthful exuberance. (AG)" (2/2017)

2015 Castelgiocondo "Campo ai Sassi" Rosso di Montalcino

The Frescobaldis are one of Tuscany’s oldest wine families. They are based in Rufina, just east of Florence, and they have wineries in multiple zones across Italy. While their family history is definitely rooted in Florence, their estate in Montalcino, Castello di Nipozzano, defined Chianti Rufina in the US for decades. They are practiced royals, elegant and well spoken, even when it comes to sotto-voce, but when they talk about Montalcino there’s always a twinkle in their eyes. The estate is on the west-south-west side of Montalcino.

2014 Venturini Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Semonte Alto" Ripasso Top Pick!
2014 Venturini Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Semonte Alto" Ripasso

The three-generation family estate of Azienda Agricola Venturini Massimino works 12 hectares of their own vineyard lands in the gorgeous region of Valpolicella Classica. The rolling hills of Valpolicella are some 812 feet above sea level, and the climate is singularly suited to produce some of the world's most decadent and stunning red wines using the unique 'Ripasso' technique. The vineyard of 'Semonte Alto' produces this style of full-bodied, concentrated, plush red that is intensely aromatic and boldly expressive. The 2014 vintage was challenging, an... Read More »

2015 Casale della Ioria "Tenuta della Ioria" Cesanese del Piglio

91 points Vinous: "Deep ruby. Enticing violet and sweet spice aromas complement red cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Easygoing, ripe and lively, with penetrating, persistent notes of red fruit and sweet spices on the long, bright finish. This easygoing red boasts plenty of flavor and noteworthy refinement for what is essentially an entry-level wine. Super stuff. (ID)" (8/2017) K&L Notes: Cesanese is a grape native to Lazio, the region where Rome is. The Lazio region produces not one Cesanese but three, from three different grapes: Cesanese d’Affile, Cesanese Comune and Cesanes... Read More »

2016 Quartomoro Cannonau Di Sardegna Orriu

Cannonau is the Sardinian name for Grenache. As a wine-producing region, Sardinia lingered for years in anonymity, but it’s had a renaissance in quality starting with just a few wineries, and it’s growing. Piero Cella, who started his tiny Quartomoro label as a side job, is part of that renaissance. An enologist, he has worked all over Sardinia, in almost every region, spending years documenting soil types and grape varieties. While he reeks of the scientific method he has much more of an emotional bond with the people he works with. He buys grapes from ... Read More »

2014 Antinori "Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato" Toscana

Vinous: "The 2014 Bolgheri Il Bruciato, the entry-level wine from Antinori's Guado al Tasso property, is powerful, juicy and intense. Then again, Antinori was extremely severe in 2014. The Cont'Ugo and Matarocchio will not be bottled at all, while production of Guado al Tasso is down sharply. This is an absolutely delicious wine for the year within its relatively modest (by Bolgheri standards) price range. (AG)" (11/2016) Wine Spectator: "A bright, pure version, this red evokes cherry, currant and spice flavors, with well-integrated, if dusty, tannins lining the finish. Firm but ha ...Read More »

2016 Treves Petite Arvine Val d'Aosta

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of green apples, grapefruit and sweet almonds. Full body, a creamy texture and a fresh and clear finish. Great depth and verve. Drink now." (10/2017) K&L Notes: With the help of his mother Treves Gianni took over his grandparents farm in Montjovet in Italy's Aosta Valley in 1997. Their legacy was a robust farm known largely for producing Fontina cheese as well as fruits, vegetables, potatoes, and a variety of grains and herbs. Their devotion to producing healthy, local food was the heart of the farm, and fortunately the farm continues to now produce a little w... Read More »
