2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino

95 points James Suckling: "Lovely black licorice, flowers, and ripe fruits on the nose. This is very aromatic." (1/2011) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Displays complex aromas of blackberry and cherry, with a hint of licorice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a delicious finish of wonderful yet subtle fruit. Well-integrated and beautiful. Everything is in the right place. (JS)" (1/2009) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is simply beautiful. Now that the wine is in bottle it is even better than when I tasted it from barrel. Firm but silky tannins frame a core of ripe dark fruit as this powerful yet elegant Brunello ...Read More »

2008 Tenuta San Guido "Sassicaia" Bolgheri (375ml)

97 points James Suckling: "This is the best young Sassicaia in years. It's the new 1988, which was great, and sometimes better than the legendary 1985. What incredible aromas here with blueberries, spices, licorice, plums. Graphite too. Subtle and complex. Full and silky with a beautiful texture of fine tannins and an ultra-fine finish. So beautiful now but will be much better in 2015. Owner Niccolo Incisa della Rocchetta says that Sassicaia is always great in years that end with eight: 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008." (2/2016) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Plum cake, underbrush, dark berry, menthol and a touch of mocha unfold in the glass. The taut, full-bodied palate offers chewy black cherry, raspberry jam, licorice and sage framed in youthfully assertive, fine-grained tannins. A tobacco note closes the finish. Drink 2022-2032. Deep and fantastic. Savory. 20% whole berry. Best ever? Made from organic grapes." (8/2017) K&L Notes: As reported in the Wine Advocate in 2013, "Stefano Frascolla and Tua Rita have almost single-handedly put Suvereto on Italy’s winemaking map. 2006 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino

97 points James Suckling: "Love the nose on this with blackberries, sweet tobacco, blueberries. Full body, with soft and silky tannins and a light jammy finish. Lots of dark fruits. Long finish. Loads going on in this one. Give it three to five years. Or more." (1/2011) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino flows with gorgeous layers of dark red fruit. This is one of the more muscular, virile wines of the vintage. Slow to reveal its character, the Valdicava Brunello will require significant patience, but I have seen the wine blossom beautifully, even in the smallest of vintages. A blast o ...Read More »

Ornellaia shows its pedigree here. Better in 2019." (8/2047) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "To be released in May 2017, the 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia reverts to a style and personality that we have not seen in a long while. 2013 Gaja Barbaresco

96 points Vinous: "The 2013 Barbaresco is fabulous. In fact, this is one of the best Barbarescos I have tasted at Gaja in many years. Vibrant, perfumed and beautifully sculpted in the glass, the 2013 possesses tons of understated intensity. Sweet red cherry, mint, white pepper and anise are all lifted in the glass. The 2013 is an almost shockingly classic Barbaresco from Gaja. The translucent color, vibrant Nebbiolo fruit and austere but noble tannins represent a move towards a much more traditional style. (11/2014) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is a bit of a shock to the palate after 20+ older vintages. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine will be released in May 2016. The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is an integrated and seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Alex Heinz tells me that 2013 was a difficult vintage especially towards the early part of the growing season. It balanced out during the summer and allowed for steady ripening of fruit before the harvest. But 2013 was not as hot as 2011 and 2012 overall, and this edition of Ornellaia is beautifully tonic and shapely as a result. The bouquet is very developed in terms of aromas t ...Read More »

(Web only - 2007)" 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very pretty character with pressed violets, licorice, anisette, root beer and balsam herb. This is a complete wine that accurately doses out its intensity and persistence with stopwatch precision. Dark fruit, blackberry, spice, leather, tar and tobacco are folded together into a homogeneous whole. This is especially true at this exact moment in its long and promising drinking window. The wine shows less volume compared to some of the more opulent vintages, but it absolutely excels in terms of length and finish. The wine has just started its evolutionary track with aromas of blackcurrant, dried blackberry and cherry. This was a warm but balanced vintage that shows beautiful results today and exceeds my already high expectations. There is a steady thickness and determination to the wine that carries it forward. This was the last vintage made in the Tignanello winery before the structure saw a major overhaul. 2003 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (94RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pepe’s 2003 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a bomb. Tar, leather, scorched earth and black fruit emerge from this dark, imposing Montepulciano. The wine comes together beautifully in the glass, as the aromas and flavors gain breadth and dimension. Despite the rich style, there is nothing excessive or over-ripe here, just exceptional balance of ripe fruit as captured by a traditional approach to vinification. A final blast of tar informs the long finish. Pepe fans will flip over the 2003, but readers who prefer subtlety over power will want to cellar this for a few years to allow for some of the baby fat to melt away. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2028. Emidio Pepe is one of Abruzzo’s reference-point producers. These traditionally made wines can show some rough edges when they are young, but they rarely disappoint when given an opportunity to mature in the cellar. (AG)" (06/2010)

2012 Giacomo Conterno "Francia" Barolo (Pre-Arrival) Top Pick!
2012 Giacomo Conterno "Francia" Barolo (Pre-Arrival)

98 points James Suckling: "A gorgeous nose of orange peel, plums and light walnuts. Some wet earth. Full to medium body with a compacted center palate. A tight ball of ripe, fine tannins. Minerals and hot stones underneath. Serious structure. No Monfortino was made so it's all here. Better in 2022." (11/2016) 97 points Vinous: "The 2012 Barolo Francia is wonderfully expressive today. Much more open than the Barolo Cerretta tasted alongside it, the Francia bristles with energy. Floral and mineral overtones add to an impression of brightness, yet there is plenty of underlying tannin and overall structur ...Read More »

2010 San Filippo "Le Lucére" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (Previously $200)

100 points James Suckling: "Amazing young Brunello with superb concentration and depth. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and mineral, oyster shell and blueberry flavors. Goes on for minutes. Leave it until 2020 to open. A triumph. (JS)" (10/2015) 96 points Wine Spectator: "The sweet, ripe fruit has an immediate impact, offering notes of cherry, strawberry and currant, followed by light oak spice, leather, tobacco and earth accents. The tannins peek through on the finish, but overall this is balanced and long. So harmonious that you may want to enjoy now, but this should only get better with time. Best fro ...Read More »

2000 Castello dei Rampolla "Vigna d'Alceo" Toscana

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For whatever reason, the full-bodied 2000 Vigna d'Alceo was roaring the day I tasted it. A single vineyard blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, it tastes like the Sammarco on steroids. It boasts a deep purple color in addition to scents of espresso, sweet melted licorice, black currant jam, and toasty oak. There is great intensity, superb purity, and a finish that lingers for nearly a minute. This mythical wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and will age effortlessly for two decades." (12/2002) 95 points Vinous: "The 2000 Vigna d'Alceo is gorgeous. It is als ...Read More »

2011 Aldo Conterno "Colonnello" Barolo

94 points James Suckling: "Wonderful richness and balance here with plum, dried strawberry and light Spanish cedar character. Full body, fine tannins and a clean finish. Try in 2018." (4/2015) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows a compelling level of brawn and heft. This is an elaborate vinous patchwork with dark fruit nuances backed by ethereal tones of balsam herb and licorice. The wine is sturdy, compact and extremely well-constructed. It takes a few minutes to open, but once it does Barolo Bussia Colonnello bursts forth with blackberry, plum, spice and rum cake. Menthol tone ...Read More »

2010 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival)

98 points James Suckling: "This is a truly super Brunello from Poggio di Soto and probably its best ever. It shows decadence yet class and subtlety that only the great 2010 vintage can give it. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and layers of berries, plums, peaches and cedar. The finish lasts for minutes. Why wait on this? Open it and enjoy the magic." (10/2015) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* Stunning and fragrant, this elegantly structured wine opens with a fragrance of pressed violet, perfumed red berry, leather, white pepper and a whiff of mint. The vibrant, silky palate offers black raspberry, ...Read More »

2009 Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino shows the signature sophistication this iconic estate is celebrated for. Sadly, Diego and Nora Molinari have announced their intention to sell Cerbaiona and we may soon be looking at new ownership. A dark appearance segues to brooding aromas of licorice, tar, cherry and spice that wrap around the long, polished finish. (ML)" (2/2014)

2012 Miani Merlot Colli Orientali del Friuli Buri (Pre-Arrival)

98 points Vinous: "A wine of gravitas and pure power, the 2012 Merlot Buri offers up a heady concoction of black cherry jam, melted road tar, exotic spices, blood orange and graphite. Dark, sumptuous and totally beguiling, the 2012 will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. Time in the glass brings out the wilder and more mineral-drenched notes that are such signatures of this Merlot from old, terraced vines in Buttrio. (AG)" (3/2017)

2015 Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Maremma Toscana (3L) (Pre-Arrival)

99 points James Suckling: "I love the currant and rosemary character of this wine. Some sage, too. Complex aromas that draw you in. Full body, extremely tight and chewy with a long and intense finish. The tannins are fantastic - so polished. Focused and beautiful. Mineral undertone with ash and hot stone highlighting the dark fruits. It goes on for minutes. Needs three or four years to come together. But a serious red all the way." (8/2017)

2001 Aldo Conterno "Granbussia" Barolo Riserva (3L)

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full medium red. Very ripe aromas of strawberry, licorice, minerals and truffle, with balsamic and dried floral nuances. Fat, sweet, rich and deep; at once succulent and seamless, with a wonderfully layered texture and great early appeal. Very full without coming across as weighty. The slow-building finish features substantial sweet tannins. "Shows the magic side of 2001," Franco offers. "It can keep for a long time but it's great right now." By the way, 2001 was the seventh consecutive vintage in which this wine was bottled, but there will be no '0 ...Read More »
