Amazing depth and density. They said they macerated a little more than normal because the fruit was perfect. A classic nebbiolo that reminds me of the great 1996. About 30% less production. 2004 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) "Rennina" Brunello di Montalcino
Bid on this bottle of 2004 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) "Rennina" Brunello di Montalcino (95ST, 95WE, 93RP, 92WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. Powerful yet elegant nose shows more berries and minerals and less oak than the Sugarille; this is downright Musigny-like. Then silky, suave and graceful on the palate, with compelling inner-mouth floral perfume and a wonderfully pliant texture. If anything, this wine is even more intense on the suavely tannic, extremely long finish than in the middle, as its underlying minerality gives it outstanding grip and finesse. This is made from a blend of sites while Sugarille is from a single vineyard, but it was this wine that spun my head around when I tasted the two bottles side by side. (ST)" (07/2009)

In fact, that pretty mineral note is what defines the wine and gives it harmony and personality. The wine is full and dense in the mouth with succulent tannins that need to soften with a little more cellar aging." (08/2010)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera opens with an exotic bouquet of candied red fruit, flowers, mint and minerals. This is an unusually opulent, racy style for Grasso. The Gavarini is a touch hot and alcoholic at first, but with several hours of air, that quality seemed to resolve itself nicely. Silky, beautifully integrated tannins frame a finish of exceptional elegance. The personality of the year marks the Gavarini to a significant degree. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. This shows superb density, richness and finesse from start to finish, with exceptional depth and fabulous overall balance. Sweet, lush and deep, with outstanding clarity and lift to the pure flavors of red cherry, raspberry and flint. Pristine and very long on the vibrant finish, which features extremely sophisticated tannins and superb length. The wine's minerally, flinty quality runs through from nose to aftertaste. A paradigm of cooler-climate Montalcino sangiovese, this is the year's best Brunello, and it will cost you a fraction as much as more famous Brunellos that other wine writers will surely score higher. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a phenomenal achievement and a wine that captures not only the spirit of this classic vintage, but the true essence of an age-worthy wine like Brunello. This single vineyard Riserva is sharp, pristine and immaculate. It starts slow and shy, but then blossoms to beautiful intensity and aromatic brilliance. It delivers a very authentic and genuine read of Sangiovese with wild berry aromas followed by pressed violets, wet earth, tobacco and lightly toasted spice. The bouquet is seamless and very long in persistence. The same holds true for the mouthfeel. The wine delivers a fine and silky texture with a good dose of power and personality at the rear. 98+ (ML)" (03/2016)

Sweet red cherries, flowers, spices and licorice are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. This is a decidedly bright, elegant Grattamacco that impresses for its fabulous overall balance and understated, classy personality. Fat, rich and opulent, it will reward consumers with its generous super-ripe fruit, great length and beautiful overall balance. While it doesn’t look to be one of the more long-lived Camartinas, with some air it is drinking beautifully today. It is a very refined effort in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. 2010 Val di Suga (Angelini) "Spuntali" Brunello di Montalcino
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Val di Suga (Angelini) "Spuntali" Brunello di Montalcino (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Showing much riper fruit characteristics, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali offers dark fruit and blackberry backed by spice, leather and tobacco. This is a profound and powerful wine that is released as a Riserva with one extra year of bottle aging after the five years you get with a Brunello annata. The results are sophisticated and deep with many layers of fruit, spice and balsam herb. The wine feels young in the mouth thanks to the tight tannins and bright acidity. These qualities should help it age throughout the years. I like this expression because it delivers loads of fruit and power at the same time. (ML)" (03/2016)

Every detail has been finessed. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Each vineyard parcel is fermented separately to maintain varietal identity. The wine’s appearance is dark and luscious with thick extraction and a vibrant dark garnet hue. Generous aromas of dark fruit, tobacco and chocolate lift steadily from the glass. The mouthfeel is soft and yielding with a great sense of tannic persistency that holds up the finish, which can be counted in many long minutes. Give this wine five years or more to fully evolve. 2007 Domenico Clerico "Ciabot Mentin" Barolo
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Domenico Clerico "Ciabot Mentin" Barolo (98RP, 95JS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. Astute readers will note the slight name change here, which is the result of new regulations that require the use of the historic vineyard name, in this case Ginestra, or a proprietary name. Call me nostalgic, but it is sad to see one of the iconic labels in Barolo disappea

2010 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino (98RP, 95WS, 94VN, 93JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine that shows uncompromising varietal pureness, albeit in a most concentrated and elaborate form. This is what great Sangiovese is all about. There's so much happening on the nose and the wine brings you to cherry, spice, licorice, cured meat, pressed rose and grilled meat in equal measure. No one element overpowers the next. The mouthfeel is also tight and bright with the kind of fruit intensity that promises long cellar aging. This Brunello is only at the beginning of a long road ahead. The longer the wine stays in the glass, the more it offers in terms of complexity and intensity. This is a true standout that can be enjoyed for up to 20 years ahead.Fabrizio Bindocci and his son Alessandro are the most accomplished father-son winemaking team I can think of today in Italy ... The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a deeply layered expression with bold tones of dark fruit that are softened and enhanced by spice, leather, tobacco and balsam herb. The wine is very beautiful and polished with slightly less depth and complexity compared the outstanding (100 point) vintage that precedes it. I am not sure the tannins will fully soften here, but readers lucky enough to own this wine are in for a thrilling ride. This is stunning juice! Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016. This stunning set of wines shows how far ahead of the pack Domenico Clerico was 20 years ago. Then again, Clerico has the privilege of working with some of the very finest vineyards in the world. 1974 Cavallotto "Bricco Boschis" Barolo
Bid on this bottle of 1974 Cavallotto "Bricco Boschis" Barolo . About the producer: "At the gates of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo Zone, on the slopes of the Bricco Boschis, one finds the Cavallotto Winery, which lies on 25 hectares of land. Today the children of Olivio – Laura, Giuseppe and Alfio, the 4th generation working the family farm – continue to exclusively vinify the grapes produced in their estate vineyards into DOC and DOCG wines: Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, Langhe “Grign” made from Grignolino grapes, Langhe Chardonnay and “Pinner” made from Pinot Nero grapes. Since 1928, the Cavallottto family has owned the estate Tenuta Bricco Boschis. In 1946, they were the first cultivators in Castiglione Falletto to vinify all of their estate’s fruit. In 1948 they released the first bottling of their own BAROLO wine, with the label and registered trademark of Cavallotto."

Asili is in the village of Barbaresco, where the wines are generally more feminine than in Neive. The best wines from this site have great aromatics and fine, silky tannins. Giacosa’s 2003 Barbaresco Asili enjoyed a surprisingly strong showing. It was impressive, powerful and youthful. (AG)" (10/2010)

Bid on this 3L-bottle lot of 2006 Pelissero "Vanotu" Barbaresco (3L) (OWC - 94ST, 93RP) in original wood. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Aged for 22 months in new barriques . Deep red with ruby highlights. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Tulin, with hints of black cherry, cassis, licorice, violet and spicy, smoky oak. Broad, silky and voluminous without coming across as heavy thanks to lift from the limestone in the soil. Not yet expressive in the middle palate, but there's serious ripeness and richness here and the major, oak-driven tannins are chewy and sweet. Pelissero took his time to harvest in 2006, and picked these vines late) the wine has a higher-than-normal pH of 3.55. Quite long on the aftertaste. This boasts the structure and complexity for an extended evolution in bottle, but today it's an infant. As impressive a Barbaresco as I've yet tasted from this producer. (ST)" (11/2009)

1997 Luigi Pira "Marenca" Barolo
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1997 Luigi Pira "Marenca" Barolo (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The profound, dense garnet/ruby-colored 1997 Barolo Marenca displays a spectacular bouquet of roasted espresso, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, tobacco, sardines, cedar, and leather. Sumptuous in the mouth, full-bodied, with an exotic overripe character, this dense, thick Barolo tastes sweet because of the high glycerin levels. Sensual, layered and totally voluptuous in the glass, the 2007 shows the more flamboyant side of Barolo. I find the wine’s voluptuous, engaging personality impossible to resist. 1961 Gaja Barbaresco
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1961 Gaja Barbaresco (95VN, 92WS). Vinous: "An eye-opening wine, the 1961 Barbaresco (Infernot) is one of the very best wines I have tasted from Gaja. The 1961 is impressive on many counts, but I am simply blown away by the sheer richness and depth of the fruit. According to Angelo Gaja, this bottling (see the picture in this article) was the last lot of the 1961 to be bottled and probably spent 8-9 years in cask. Although hard to imagine today, demand for Barolo and Barbaresco was so sporadic back then that wines were bottled only as they were sold, and sales were nothing like they are today. Gaja goes on to add that 1961 was an exceptionally hot year and that the harvest was completely done by the end of September, which was unheard of at the time. The fermenting vats got so hot that ice was added to try to bring temperatures down. Sugars were extremely high, and the wines had a hard time finishing fermentation. A little known fact is that Gaja had to take
