1995 Calon-Ségur, St Estèphe Top Pick!
1995 Calon-Ségur, St Estèphe

97 points James Suckling: "I always loved this wine from the first time I tasted it in 1998. It has such purity and power yet it's reserved and beautiful. It's one of the best Calons ever. I drank a bottle with some friends in Manhattan last week and it was the wine of the evening. It was full-bodied with silky tannins and a focused and intense finish. Lots of currant and berry character and hints of dried spices. It's finally opening up and giving real pleasure now like so many 1995 Bordeaux at the moment." (5/2014) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Incredible nose of crushed berries, flowers, spices and nuts. Full ...Read More »

1995 d'Yquem, Sauternes

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1995 Chateau d’Yquem is moving into its secondary aroma phase. A deep golden color, it has a dense and almost Barsac-like bouquet with tangerine, apricot, acacia and melted candle wax. It displays good intensity, unfolding beautifully in the glass. The palate has a strident opening, with a slight bitter edge that lends this Yquem great tension. One can discern layers of marmalade infused with honey fruit, with a powerful, spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is drinking perfectly now, but will surely age ...Read More »

1995 Fieuzal, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L)

91 points Wine Spectator: "A mouthful. Big and burly, full-bodied and very tannic, with a long finish. Dried berry and fresh mushroom aromas. This needs time. (JS)" (1/1998) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This quintessentially elegant wine reveals a deep ruby/purple color, and an attractive smoky, black currant, mineral, and floral-scented nose. There are sweet, ripe, lush flavors, medium body, ripe tannin, and a velvety texture that borders on opulence. There is no heaviness to the wine. Moreover, neither the tannin, acidity, nor alcohol are intrusive. This seamless, extremely well made claret is a candidate for ...Read More »

1995 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassis-scented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is another beauty. It should be drinkable within 4-5 years, and keep for 25-30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025. (RP)" (2/1998) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Beautiful aromas of currant, plum and spice. Full-bodied, with a wonderful concentration of fruit, yet silky, racy ...Read More »

1995 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion (Previously $170)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very fine effort from Clos Fourtet, the 1995 exhibits a medium dark plum color, followed by sweet black cherry and kirsch fruit intertwined with minerals and toasty oak. Tightly wound on the palate, with medium body, excellent delineation and purity, and a spicy finish with plenty of grip, this example has closed down considerably since bottling, but it does possess excellent sweetness and depth. However, the tannin is more elevated, so this 1995 will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018." (2/1998) Wine Spectator: "Aromas of chocolate, tobacco and berries. M ...Read More »

1995 Clerc-Milon, Pauillac (1.5L)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Gorgeous aromas of black licorice, currant and blackberry. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very tight, yet with air it comes around wonderfully. Give it time. This was always one of the buys of the vintage.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2008. (Web-2007)" Jancis Robinson: "Still some purple in the crimson. Less obvious nose than the Armailhac 1995. Hint of mint, solid and sweetly polished. Good effort to cover what must have bene pretty dry tannins, but less flavour than the Armailhac. Fresh and bracing and clean – a good palate cl ...Read More »

1995 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Leognan

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Berry Brother & Rudd’s vertical. The 1995 is probably reaching its peak. It retains that lovely Graves bouquet with tertiary notes subtly interwoven into the red berry fruit, that meaty element only becoming evident with continued aeration. The palate is sensual on the entry with a rounded texture, plenty of sous-bois notes defining the finish that is long in the mouth. The savoury side of this wine is less obvious here that on previous bottles. Drinking beautifully now. (NM)" (1/2013) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A chewy, burly wine for aging. Big Haut-Bailly. Vivid berry a ...Read More »

1995 Haut-Brion, Pessac Léognan

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The 1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas handled flawlessly. The result is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a tight but promising nose of burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant, plum-like fruit, medium to full body, a high level of ripe b ...Read More »

1995 Troplong-Mondot, St-Émilion

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Totally shut down and enclosed, with an impressively saturated purple/black color and a promising but tightly strung nose of mineral, vanilla, espresso, black cherry and currant, this wine has beautiful purity, medium to full body, relatively high but sweet tannin, and a long 30-35 second finish. The wine is very firm but impressive as well as promising. Patience please! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. 1995 Pape-Clement, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Expressive nose combines raspberry, hot stones, tobacco, and smoky oak. Rich, sweet and mouthfilling, with a softer structure than the '96. Enticing fruit is accessible already. Complicating notes of smoke, leather and tar. Builds slowly on the sweet finish, which features fine, dusty tannins. But can't quite match the '96 for grip. (ST)" (5/1998) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of blackberry, tobacco and black licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lots of ripe fruit and a chewy, slightly hot finish. 1995 Montrose, St-Estèphe (Previously 200)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An explosively rich, exotic, fruity Montrose, the 1995 displays even more fat and extract than the 1996. There is less Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1995 blend, resulting in a fuller-bodied, more accessible and friendlier style. The wine exhibits an opaque black/ruby/purple color, as well as a ripe nose of black fruits, vanillin, and licorice. Powerful yet surprisingly accessible (the tannin is velvety and the acidity low), this terrific example of Montrose should be drinkable at a young age. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2028." Full and sweet in the middle palate, with strong, lively flavors. Here the toothcoating tannins seem slightly less well integrated today but they are ripe and even. Really creamy in the mouth, but with the structure to age." (6/1998) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine was consistently outstanding from cask, and I susp ...Read More »

Still needs time to come together.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2008. (JS, Web-2007)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "While not as backward as the 1996, the opaque purple-colored 1995 is a tannic, unevolved, dense, concentrated wine that will require 8-10 years of cellaring. The 1995 exhibits pain grille, blackcurrant, mineral, and subtle tobacco in its complex yet youthful aromatics. 1995 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (1.5L)

Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobs of black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and a boatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkable intensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by the wine's new oak. Because of low acidity and sweet tannin, the 1995 will be difficult to resist young, although it will age for 2-3 decades. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2025. (RP) ...Read More »

(Web Only—2007)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I have indicated numerous times in this journal, the second wine of Las Cases, Clos du Marquis, is one of the finest second wines being made in Bordeaux. Over recent years, it has become a wine of classified growth quality. The 1996 may turn out to be even better than the outstanding 1995.
