1996 Kirwan, Margaux Top Pick!
1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (JS, Web Only—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellen ...Read More »

1996 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for two decades. 1996 Latour, Pauillac

96 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous aromas of crushed raspberries, plums and blackberries. Mind-blowing nose. Full-bodied, with soft and silky tannins and a long caressing finish. Hard not to drink now, but leave it alone. (JS, Web-2007)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 1996 Latour is a wine that continues to perplex. I just think that given the vintage, the team would have made a far superior wine nowadays. That said, it is still a very fine Pauillac. Here, it conveyed a sense of "airiness" on the bouquet, more backward and surly than other bott ...Read More »

1996 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish. (ST)" (6/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Rauzan-Segla now at 20 years of age has an "airy," perfumed bouquet with wilted rose petals, undergrowth and dried orange peel scents. What it lacks is a sense of presence. Perhaps it is enduring a dumb phase? The palate is much better than the aromatics, showing fine balance and crisp tannins. The acidity is well judged ...Read More »

1996 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (93RP, 91ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This fabulous 1996 was tasted three times from bottle, and it is unquestionably the finest wine produced by this estate since their blockbuster 1990. Medium to full-bodied, with a saturated black/purple color, the nose offers notes of cedar, jammy black fruits, smoke, truffles, and subtle new oak. In the mouth, there is impressive fruit extraction, a tannic, full-bodied structure, and a classic display of power and finesse. The longer it sat in the glass, the more impressive the wine became. Backward, and massive in terms of its extract and richness, this should prove to be a sensational Leoville-Poyferre for drinking over the next three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2028. 1996 Pavie, St. Emilion
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1996 Pavie, St. Emilion. A sentimental favorite because it marks one of the last vintages that Jean Paul Valette was involved with before he sold the estate. Mr. Valette was one of the friendliest and most hospitable proprietors in Bordeaux, and will be missed dearly.

1996 Lagrange, St-Julien

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific grip. This makes the 1995 seem almost cooked by comparison. Still needs at least five or six years of cellaring. 'We always had unusual tastes in this wine, like eucalyptus and menthol, due to the cool September nights,' noted ...Read More »

1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac Back In Stock!
1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Clerc Milon was surprisingly closed on the nose, tightly wound at first but gently unfurling with scents of melted tar, desiccated orange peel and leather that are interwoven into the black fruit. I noticed a more pronounced tobacco scent developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the 1996 d'Armailhac, spicy with cracked black pepper, Hoi Sin, bay leaf and Asian spice notes liberally sprinkled over the finish. Decant this for an hour before pouring folks. (NM)" (10/2016) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Pungent spices, black fruits, ...Read More »

1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) Back In Stock!
1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)

96 points Wine Spectator: "This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage.—Non-blind Yquem vertical (July 2014). (JM)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a ...Read More »

1996 Figeac, St.-Emilion
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1996 Figeac, St.-Emilion. Jancis Robinson: "Very rainy growing season. 50% of grapes selected. (tasted from) Magnum. Solid, masculine nose. Looks much older than the 1998 magnum just tasted! Mid ruby. Strong fibre of minerality. Relatively light weight. Marked acidity and very cool. Some might call this skinny but it opened out in the glass and became sweeter. 17/20 points. (JR)" (09/2015)

1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge, Pessac-Leognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. With a dark ruby/purple color, it displays a beautiful presentation of blackberry and cassis fruit nicely dosed with subtle new oak. On the attack, the wine is sweet and pure, with striking symmetry, and a compellingly balanced mid-palate and finish. Although not as big as some blockbusters from this vintage, it is extremely complex (both aromatically and flavor-wise), and impressive for its restraint, subtlety, and impeccable balance. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016. (RP)" (4/1999)

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (high shoulder, lightly soiled label)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (1.5L) (soiled label)

92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. (JS, Web-2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastilles, a touch of tobacco with a tightly coiled, minerally, slightly sharp finish that perhaps just needs a l ...Read More »
