1996 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc Top Pick!
1996 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage, Lanessan's 1996 boasts an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color, and knock-out aromatics of melted chocolate, asphalt, and cassis. Deep, rich, and medium-bodied, with excellent concentration and purity, this impressively-endowed, flavorful, well-structured wine should be at its finest between 2004-2016. (RP)" (4/1999) Wine Spectator: "A pretty nose of currants and blackberries. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and plenty of fruit, but a slightly short finish. A very good wine from Lanessan." (1/1999) K&L Notes: Lanessan has produced some of our favorit... Read More »

1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (Web Only—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellent, n ...Read More »

1996 du Tertre, Margaux

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper, Du Tertre's 1996 exhibits a black ruby/purple color, a sweet black fruit-scented nose, medium to full body, well-integrated tannin, and fine purity and depth. This wine should age nicely, yet have a degree of accessibility young. (RP)" (2/1998) Jancis Robinson: "Owned by the Gasquetons until 1997. Looks quite evolved. Mid ruby with strong rusty notes at the rim. Very light nose. Lots of gentle evolution. Not in the first flush of youth but this has charm. Needs drinking before the fruit fades though." (9/2011) K&L Notes: Neal Martin's notes: "A typical Margaux nose: blackberr... Read More »

1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes

96 points Wine Spectator: "This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage. (Web-2014) (JM)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ". 1996 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe

98 points Decanter: "This has to be one of the wines of the vintage. More deft and cedary than the bigger boned 1986 vintage (also tasted), this is light delicate and elegant. Again, ink and spice on the nose, with stunning cedar and blackcurrant fruit with a touch of undergrowth, graphite and cigar box. Beautifully fresh with sublime melting tannins. (JS)" (11/2015) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby. Ineffable aromas of black fruits, minerals, licorice and Havana tobacco. Rich, dense and thick; powerful but harmonious. Layered texture over a strong backbone. Very long on the palate, with t ...Read More »

1996 La Croix de Beaucaillou, St-Julien

The second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucailllou, the grapes come from the château's vineyard. Like its first growth counterpart, undergoes careful selection in the vineyard. Designed to drink younger than Ducru-Beaucaillou, it is still a St-Julien, with the region's characteristic finesse and ability to age.

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac

97 points Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but the ...Read More »

1996 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035. (RP)" (4/1999) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant, plum, tobacco and black ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac Top Pick!
1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. (RP)" (8/2011) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. 1996 Bordeaux Tasting Lot
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Bordeaux Tasting Lot, including 1-bottle of 1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac (90RP, 90ST), 1-bottle of 1996 d'Issan, Margaux, and 1-bottle of 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (91RP, 90ST, 90WS). Of the 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." (04/1999)

1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac Back In Stock!
1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is among the finest wines I have ever tasted from this estate. Lavishly oaked, with gobs of pain grille and rich fruit, it is massive and concentrated. The color is dense ruby/purple. The bouquet offers notes of roasted coffee, tobacco, and jammy cassis. Although surprisingly soft and opulent on the attack, the mid-section and finish reveal the wine's full body, high flavor extraction, and moderate tannin. This complete, large-scaled Clerc-Milon will be at its finest between 2005-2018. (RP)" (4/1999) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. 1996 Haut-Batailley, Pauillac

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine exhibits a dense purple color, as well as a wonderfully sweet, classic Pauillac nose of black currants and cigar box notes. Powerful for Haut-Batailley (normally a light, elegant, supple Pauillac), the 1996 possesses intense fruit, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a surprisingly long, layered finish. This appears to be a classic, and may merit an outstanding score. (RP)" (2/1998) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. 1996 Monbousquet, St-Emilion

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I extend my congratulations and accolades to the relatively young new proprietor of Monbousquet, Gerard Perse...he has reduced yields to under 30 hectoliters per hectare, and is doing everything to ensure a natural expression of his vineyards' terroirs...The 1996 Monbousquet is an outstanding effort. The wine is slightly tannic, but it exhibits an exotic nose of kirsch liqueur, cassis, roasted herbs, espresso, and mocha. It possesses excellent texture, impressive depth and richness, and sweet toasty oak. The saturated dark ruby/purple color suggests a de ...Read More »

Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely Cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well." (8/2002) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. 1996 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is unquestionably a profound Grand-Puy-Lacoste, but it is excruciatingly backward. It reveals an essence of creme de cassis character which sets it apart from other Pauillacs. The wine is displaying plenty of tannin, huge body, and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals and subtle oak. Massive, extremely structured, and with 25-30 or more years of longevity, this immensely-styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste will require 7-8 years of patience, perhaps longer. A superb, classic Pauillac. It will require many years to come around...The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents.
