1996 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very good example of this...estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this [is a] seductive Lynch-Moussas...(RP)" (4/1999) K&L Notes: In February 1998, Robert Parker wrote: "Lynch-Moussas is clearly on the comeback trail, as evidenced by the 1995 and 1996 efforts, which are two of the finest wines I have tasted from this Pauillac estate." Just tasted in 2015... Read More »

1996 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for two decades. (RP)" (4/1999) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Blackberry and lic ...Read More »

1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (JS, Web Only—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellen ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

(JS, Web Only-2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastilles, a touch of tobacco with a tightly coiled, minerally, slightly sharp f ...Read More »

Of the 1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes,Wine Spectator writes: "This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage. (JM, Web Only-2014)"

1996 Clos Fourtet, St. Emilion

90 points from Parker… 'The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose offers up sweet black raspberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with toasty oak and floral scents. It is fleshy, surprisingly expansive and forward for a 1996, with low acidity, and a long, multilayered, fruit-driven finish. The tannin is ripe, and thus the fruit comes forward and the wine is seductive and charming. This wine possesses the weight, richness, and extract to last for 15-20 years, but it should be drinkable early.'

1996 Batailley, Pauillac

Jancis Robinson: "Mid crimson. Lightweight, low-key nose. Sweet start and then a bit of acidity and some rather green tannins. Pretty astringent finish. Maybe with a bit more time this will blossom? Drink 2013-2025." (9/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Batailley's 1996 is a well-structured, old style Pauillac with a dense ruby/purple color, earthy, cedar-tinged, black currant fruit in the aromatics and flavors, medium body, an excellent mid-palate, good depth, and a moderately tannic, firm, but pure finish. This very good to excellent Batailley will keep for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2003-20 ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (97VN, 96RP, 95ST). Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but there is enough sheer concentration here to support another 20-30 years of exceptional drinking. I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to describe just how captivating the 1996 is, but I do know this: If I had an opportunity to pick up a few well-stored bottles I would take it in a nanosecond. Readers holding the 1996 should be thrilled. The 1996 Pichon Lalan

1996 Poujeaux, Moulis Back In Stock!
1996 Poujeaux, Moulis

Decanter: "Dense, tarry black fruit. Robust, mineral, still impressive vigour." (1/2006) Wine Spectator: "Aromas of tobacco, berries and cherry, with coffee bean undertones that follow through to a medium-bodied palate. Good tannins and a medium finish. (Web-2007)" K&L Notes: Poujeaux can definitely be considered one of the best and most consistent price-performers in Bordeaux. The legend of Poujeaux dates back to the 16th century, when it was started as an offshoot of Chateau Latour. Bordeaux historians retell the story of how Baron Elie de Rothschild mistook the 1953 Poujeaux for his own Lafite... Read More »

1996 d'Issan, Margaux
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 d'Issan, Margaux (94JG). John Gilman: "The 1996 Château d’Issan is a superb, young vintage of this fine estate, with the substantial tannins of this vintage on the Left Bank quite well managed and buried in a fine depth of sweet and pure fruit. The bouquet is still on the young side, but beginning to offer up some secondary elements in its constellation of sweet cassis and dark berries, tobacco leaf, a complex base of gravelly soil, a touch of graphite, violets and a nice framing of smoky new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure and focused, with a rock solid core of fruit, excellent soil signature, tangy acids, lovely balance and a firm, chewy and ripely tannic finish. The chewy tannins of this vintage are still very much present here, though very nicely integrated, and all this wine seems likely to need is a fair bit more bottle age to allow the tannic backbone to start to peel back. This will be excellent in the fullness of

1996 Pavie, St. Emilion
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 Pavie, St. Emilion. A sentimental favorite because it marks one of the last vintages that Jean Paul Valette was involved with before he sold the estate. Mr. Valette was one of the friendliest and most hospitable proprietors in Bordeaux, and will be missed dearly.

1996 Latour, Pauillac

96 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous aromas of crushed raspberries, plums and blackberries. Mind-blowing nose. Full-bodied, with soft and silky tannins and a long caressing finish. Hard not to drink now, but leave it alone. (JS, Web Only-2007)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 1996 Latour is a wine that continues to perplex. I just think that given the vintage, the team would have made a far superior wine nowadays. That said, it is still a very fine Pauillac. Here, it conveyed a sense of "airiness" on the bouquet, more backward and surly than other ...Read More »

1996 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish. (ST)" (6/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Rauzan-Segla now at 20 years of age has an 'airy,' perfumed bouquet with wilted rose petals, undergrowth and dried orange peel scents. What it lacks is a sense of presence. Perhaps it is enduring a dumb phase? The palate is much better than the aromatics, showing fine balance and crisp tannins. The acidity is well judged ...Read More »

1996 Potensac, Médoc

Jancis Robinson: "Quite evolved rim. Very dense even if not very expressive. Think chunky; almost Italian in its bone-dryness. 17.5/20 points." (6/2007) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the most amazing wine this estate has ever produced. It is rich and long-lived. It boasts a dark purple color, as well as sweet, earthy, black currant and cherry liqueur-scented nose. There is terrific fruit intensity and purity, as well as moderate tannin in the medium-bodied, impressively rich finish... A sleeper of the vintage. 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (high shoulder, lightly soiled label)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this ...Read More »

1996 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Margaux, Margaux (100RP, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth...something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted July 2016. (NM
