1996 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very good example of this...estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this [is a] seductive Lynch-Moussas...(RP)" (4/1999) K&L Notes: In February 1998, Robert Parker wrote: "Lynch-Moussas is clearly on the comeback trail, as evidenced by the 1995 and 1996 efforts, which are two of the finest wines I have tasted from this Pauillac estate." Just tasted in 2015... Read More »

1996 La Croix de Beaucaillou, St-Julien

The second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucailllou, the grapes come from the château's vineyard. Like its first growth counterpart, undergoes careful selection in the vineyard. Designed to drink younger than Ducru-Beaucaillou, it is still a St-Julien, with the region's characteristic finesse and ability to age.

1996 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Domaine de Chevalier certainly surpassed my expectations even though I would caution that I think Olivier Bernard has made better vintages since then. Deep in color, the nose is quite captivating with black fruit, brine and crushed stone. I like the strictness here -- very 1996 in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a svelte texture. The bead of acidity lends this tension although I found that finish surprisingly backward and just lacked that peacock's tail that would have warranted a higher score. Of course, the ...Read More »

1996 Certan de May, Pomerol

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Moderately saturated medium red. Somewhat riper aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, smoke, tar, tobacco and pepper, plus a hint of green coffee beans. More intensely flavored and vinous than the '97; in a rather fruity style but a wine of modest sweetness. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins and more length than the '97, but still betrays a slight greenness. (ST)" (5/1998)

1996 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1996 Chateau Rauzan-Segla is scented of dried flowers and creme de cassis with hints of game, black olives and pencil lead. Medium bodied and still quite tight in the mouth, it has a great concentration of layered savory and warm cassis flavors with lively acid and a medium level of grainy tannins, finishing long. (LPB)" (7/2012) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very lon ...Read More »

1996 Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol

93 points Wine Spectator: "Decadent and rich, with wild mushrooms, plum and hints of citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Complex, with toasted oak, coffee and ripe fruit. It goes on and on. Wonderful. Big surprise. Get it. One of the best Right Bank wines in 1996. (Web-2007)" 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium-dark red. Vinous aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and smoky, nutty oak. Silky but penetrating in the mouth; an elegantly styled wine with good extract and a light gamey nuance. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and very good persistence. This and the '95 will make ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest be ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac Back In Stock!
1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. (RP)" (8/2011) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. Starti ...Read More »

1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate's greatest wine... This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/pu ...Read More »

1996 Latour, Pauillac Top Pick!
1996 Latour, Pauillac

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in color, the 1996 is classic Latour at its utmost. The nose offers a tantalizing array of complex notes including dried Chinese plums, toasted nuts, Indian spices and black olive tapenade over a core of dried cherries and aged meat. The palate is pure power that is stunningly balanced giving a generous level of fruit concentration perfectly offset by a high level of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness. Possessing a finish that just goes on and on, this is as good as it gets. (LPB)" (11/2012) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous aromas of crushed rasp ...Read More »

1996 Tertre Roteboeuf, St-Emilion

89-91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very good red-ruby color. Very ripe, slightly jammy aromas of raspberry, chocolate and smoked duck. Sweet and velvety, but sound acids give the fruit an unusually penetrating quality. Quite long and oaky on the finish; chewy tannins coat the palate. (ST)" (5/1998) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Le Tertre-Roteboeuf is less sumptuous out of bottle than it was from cask. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding wine produced in the tell-tale style of this well-placed hillside vineyard. The color is a deep ruby, and the nose offers up hedonistic notes of smoky, creme brulee, roasted co ...Read More »

1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (bin soiled labels)

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Unquestionably this renowned estate's best wine since the 1986 and 1982...This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around...The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is eve ...Read More »

1996 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux 12-pack in OWC

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish. (ST)" (6/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Rauzan-Segla now at 20 years of age has an 'airy,' perfumed bouquet with wilted rose petals, undergrowth and dried orange peel scents. What it lacks is a sense of presence. Perhaps it is enduring a dumb phase? The palate is much better than the aromatics, showing fine balance and crisp tannins. The acidity is well judged ...Read More »

1996 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion (1.5L) Back In Stock!
1996 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion (1.5L)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The lavishly-oaked, hedonistically-styled 1996 exhibits a dark plum/purple color. The nose offers up sweet jammy fruit (primarily black currants and cherries) intermixed with toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, with excellent, nearly outstanding richness, a nicely-layered mid-palate, and sweet tannin in the long finish, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age, and should last for 15+ years." (4/1999) Wine Spectator: "An extremely well-done '96. Lovely combination of crushed berries and exotic spices. Medium-bodied, with a pretty balance of fruit and tannins." (1/1999)
