1996 Clos du Marquis, St-Julien

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Clos du Marquis is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (lower than recent vintages), 33% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot (that usually goes into Leoville-Las Cases). Much like the 1996 Potensac that I tasted alongside at the château, the nose is youthful and backward with blackberry, freshly tilled soil, cedar and tobacco scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, plenty of crisp and pure black fruit laced with cedar, harmonious and long. This is a great Saint Julien at 20 years of age, firing on all cyli ...Read More »

1996 Sociando Mallet, Haut-Médoc

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A classic Sociando-Mallet, this wine boasts a saturated purple color, as well as an intense nose of cassis liqueur, chocolate, and minerals. Dense and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity, and high tannin, this beautifully made wine is better than many classified growths. (RP)" (4/1999) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark purple-ruby. Roasted nose combines blackberry, espresso and licorice. Large-scaled, mouthfilling and impressively deep; boasts terrific intensity and sweetness. Very long, ripely tannic finish. The estate has high hopes for its '98, but it hard to believe it will sur ...Read More »

1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (JS, Web—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellent, ne ...Read More »

1996 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry juice, espresso and smoky oak. Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish. (ST)" (6/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Rauzan-Segla now at 20 years of age has an "airy," perfumed bouquet with wilted rose petals, undergrowth and dried orange peel scents. What it lacks is a sense of presence. Perhaps it is enduring a dumb phase? The palate is much better than the aromatics, showing fine balance and crisp tannins. The acidity is well judged ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. Starting to drink well now. (JS, Web—2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastilles, a touch of tobacco with a tightly coiled, minerally, slightly sharp finish ...Read More »

1996 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant, plum, tobacco and black olive nose is more complex and serious than that of either of the foregoing vintages. Thick, grapey and concentrated; still quite primary. This shows the fat and depth of the '96 vintage in the northern Medoc. Finishes long, with substantial tannins. Impressive. (ST)" (5/1999) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of black licorice, currant and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with silky, refined tannins and a medium finish. Holding back still. (JS, Web-2007)"

1996 Phélan-Ségur, St-Estèphe

Jancis Robinson: "Dark middle with an evolved rim. Firm, aromatic cassis. Thick and dense and confident with real savour. Tannins in retreat. Very clean." (9/2007) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A gutsy, classic St-Estephe with a saturated purple color, plenty of sweet cassis fruit with high quality new oak in the background, good body, and good sweetness and a chewy texture, and the vintage's high tannin well-displayed. This well-endowed wine requires 5-6 years of cellaring. (RP)" (4/1999) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Rather exotic plum and berry aromas accented by sweet oak. 1996 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (3L)

98 points Decanter: "This has to be one of the wines of the vintage. More deft and cedary than the bigger boned 1986 vintage (also tasted), this is light delicate and elegant. Again, ink and spice on the nose, with stunning cedar and blackcurrant fruit with a touch of undergrowth, graphite and cigar box. Beautifully fresh with sublime melting tannins. (JS)" (11/2015) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Cos d'Estournel was aged in 65% new oak (unlike the 1995 which was 100%) and is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. It has a straight down the line, intense and focuse ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (97VN, 96RP, 95ST, 92WS). Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but there is enough sheer concentration here to support another 20-30 years of exceptional drinking. I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to describe just how captivating the 1996 is, but I do know this: If I had an opportunity to pick up a few well-stored bottles I would take it in a nanosecond. Readers holding the 1996 should be thrilled. The 1996

1996 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is an excellent Cantemerle, if not quite as stunning as I had expected. The wine offers a dark ruby color, and a sweet nose of black raspberries, subtle new oak, and acacia smells. There is fine sweetness and solid tannin in this elegant, symmetrical wine. It is more forward and lighter than it was from cask, but it is a stylish example of Cantemerle. (RP)" (4/1999) K&L Notes: This is one of K&L's top-picks for value-of-the-vintage. Fabulous nose, rich deep flavors, value-priced considering the quality. And we weren't the only ones who liked it. Forbes raved about... Read More »

1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (93RP, 92ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Leoville Barton appears more youthful than the 1996 Langoa Barton in the glass with a healthy deep garnet core. The aromatics unfurl gracefully in the glass revealing briary, wild hedgerow, black truffle and sandalwood scents -- firmly in secondary aroma stage but with appreciable presence and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin that form its firm and classic structure, spice, white pepper and cloves infusing the slightly animally red berry fruit. This is an adorable Léoville Barton that is occupying a very 'happy' place at the moment -- superb precision, old school claret at its best. Decant for an hour no more, then enjoy. (NM)" (10/2016)

1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (98RP, 97JS, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild was remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 20 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings and sous-bois infusing the black fruit, masculine and a little aloof, yet focused and very well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, spicier than I recollect, a crescendo of flavors so that it seems understated at first but fans out with a sense of confidence towards the finish. I think this still has more to give so cellar it away for another 5-8 years if you can, but otherwise this is an exemplary Lafite-Rothschild that I can envisage getting better and better in bottle, if not quite as enthralling as either Mouton-Rothschild or Château Margaux. Tasted July 2016. (NM)" (10/2016)

1996 Latour, Pauillac

96 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous aromas of crushed raspberries, plums and blackberries. Mind-blowing nose. Full-bodied, with soft and silky tannins and a long caressing finish. Hard not to drink now, but leave it alone. (JS, Web-2007)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 1996 Latour is a wine that continues to perplex. I just think that given the vintage, the team would have made a far superior wine nowadays. That said, it is still a very fine Pauillac. Here, it conveyed a sense of "airiness" on the bouquet, more backward and surly than other bott ...Read More »

1996 Lagrange, St-Julien

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific grip. This makes the 1995 seem almost cooked by comparison. Still needs at least five or six years of cellaring. 'We always had unusual tastes in this wine, like eucalyptus and menthol, due to the cool September nights,' noted ...Read More »

1996 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Margaux, Margaux (100RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth...something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted Ju

1996 Haut-Batailley, Pauillac

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine exhibits a dense purple color, as well as a wonderfully sweet, classic Pauillac nose of black currants and cigar box notes. Powerful for Haut-Batailley (normally a light, elegant, supple Pauillac), the 1996 possesses intense fruit, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a surprisingly long, layered finish. This appears to be a classic, and may merit an outstanding score. (RP)" (2/1998) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. 1996 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Domaine de Chevalier certainly surpassed my expectations even though I would caution that I think Olivier Bernard has made better vintages since then. Deep in color, the nose is quite captivating with black fruit, brine and crushed stone. I like the strictness here -- very 1996 in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a svelte texture. The bead of acidity lends this tension although I found that finish surprisingly backward and just lacked that peacock's tail that would have warranted a higher score. Of course, the ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (3L)

91 points Robert Parker: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac ... Read More »
