1996 Gloria, St-Julien

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the finest Glorias produced over recent vintages ... Uncommonly hedonistic, plump, and precociously-styled wine. Low in acidity, rich in cedary, black currant fruit, medium-bodied, and lush ... (RP)" (2/1998) Wine Spectator: "Harmonious and balanced. Good dark color, with lovely berry and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, silky and caressing finish." (1/1999) K&L Notes: We'd like to pour this wine for any wine collector who thinks good Bordeaux has gotten too pricey. There are tons of awesome wines (from even the finest Borde... Read More »

1996 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe Back In Stock!
1996 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, minerals, tobacco, leather and fresh herbs. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely Cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well." (8/2002) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. This classic, medium to full-bodied, traditionally made wine ...Read More »

1996 La Croix de Beaucaillou, St-Julien

The second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucailllou, the grapes come from the château's vineyard. Like its first growth counterpart, undergoes careful selection in the vineyard. Designed to drink younger than Ducru-Beaucaillou, it is still a St-Julien, with the region's characteristic finesse and ability to age.

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. (RP)" (8/2011) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. 1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (Web Only—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellent, n ...Read More »

1996 Monbousquet, St-Emilion

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I extend my congratulations and accolades to the relatively young new proprietor of Monbousquet, Gerard Perse...he has reduced yields to under 30 hectoliters per hectare, and is doing everything to ensure a natural expression of his vineyards' terroirs...The 1996 Monbousquet is an outstanding effort. The wine is slightly tannic, but it exhibits an exotic nose of kirsch liqueur, cassis, roasted herbs, espresso, and mocha. It possesses excellent texture, impressive depth and richness, and sweet toasty oak. The saturated dark ruby/purple color suggests a de ...Read More »

1996 Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol

93 points Wine Spectator: "Decadent and rich, with wild mushrooms, plum and hints of citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Complex, with toasted oak, coffee and ripe fruit. It goes on and on. Wonderful. Big surprise. Get it. One of the best Right Bank wines in 1996. (Web-2007)" 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium-dark red. Vinous aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and smoky, nutty oak. Silky but penetrating in the mouth; an elegantly styled wine with good extract and a light gamey nuance. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and very good persistence. This and the '95 will make ...Read More »

Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish." (6/1999) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Intense aromas of blackberry, chocolate and currant follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and a long decadent aftertaste. Ready to enjoy.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 8,750 cases made. (Web-2007)" K&L Notes: Rauzan-Ségla rivals Palmer as the second-best property in Margaux. 1996 Haut-Bages Libéral, Pauillac

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This very good 1996 reveals an element of jammy black currant fruit intermixed with dried roasted herbs, sweet earthy smells, and new oak. It offers excellent definition, moderate tannin, medium to full body, and a long finish. As the wine sits in the glass, elements of the Cabernet Sauvignon’s sur-maturite become noticeable. It is a potential sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2017. Last tasted, 3/02. 1996 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe

98 points Decanter: "This has to be one of the wines of the vintage. More deft and cedary than the bigger boned 1986 vintage (also tasted), this is light delicate and elegant. Again, ink and spice on the nose, with stunning cedar and blackcurrant fruit with a touch of undergrowth, graphite and cigar box. Beautifully fresh with sublime melting tannins. (JS)" (11/2015) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby. Ineffable aromas of black fruits, minerals, licorice and Havana tobacco. Rich, dense and thick; powerful but harmonious. Layered texture over a strong backbone. Very long on the palate, with t ...Read More »

1996 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe New!
1996 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for two decades. 1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black ...Read More »

1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (98RP, 96ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A profound Leoville Las Cases, it is one of the great modern day wines of Bordeaux. This wine's hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, pain grille, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heaviness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining, and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St.-Julien. Despite the sweetness of the tannin, I would recommend cellaring this wine for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. (RP)" (04/1999)

1996 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Wine Spectator: "Shows wonderful berry, tobacco and vanilla character, is full- to medium-bodied, with velvety tannins and a mineral, spice aftertaste. Next to Haut-Brion, this is the wine from Pessac. (JS)" (1/1999) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deeper red-ruby. Quite withdrawn on the nose today; hints at roasted plum and Cuban cigar tobacco. Intensely flavored but firm and tight; sound acids and a solid tannic spine make this difficult to taste today. Finishes with a minty nuance. "In a period of somnolence," says Veronique Sanders. (ST)" (6/1999) K&L Notes: This big wine will reward the patient collector. Since ... Read More »

1996 Haut-Batailley, Pauillac (Previously $100)

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine exhibits a dense purple color, as well as a wonderfully sweet, classic Pauillac nose of black currants and cigar box notes. Powerful for Haut-Batailley (normally a light, elegant, supple Pauillac), the 1996 possesses intense fruit, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a surprisingly long, layered finish. This appears to be a classic, and may merit an outstanding score. (RP)" (2/1998) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. 1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes

96 points Wine Spectator: "This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage. (Web-2014) (JM)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ". 1996 La Fleur de Gay, Pomerol

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Harvested from 8th October, the 1996 Fleur de Gay has a pure, ripe nose of raspberry, cranberry, mint and crushed stones with impressive delineation. It is still very tight at the moment but it begins to unfurl with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, quite dry tannins. It exhibits commendable weight in the mouth but compared to the 1995 it is very linear...
