1996 La Croix de Beaucaillou, St-Julien

The second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucailllou, the grapes come from the château's vineyard. Like its first growth counterpart, undergoes careful selection in the vineyard. Designed to drink younger than Ducru-Beaucaillou, it is still a St-Julien, with the region's characteristic finesse and ability to age.

1996 Phélan-Ségur, St-Estèphe

Jancis Robinson: "Dark middle with an evolved rim. Firm, aromatic cassis. Thick and dense and confident with real savour. Tannins in retreat. Very clean." (9/2007) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A gutsy, classic St-Estephe with a saturated purple color, plenty of sweet cassis fruit with high quality new oak in the background, good body, and good sweetness and a chewy texture, and the vintage's high tannin well-displayed. This well-endowed wine requires 5-6 years of cellaring. (RP)" (4/1999) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Rather exotic plum and berry aromas accented by sweet oak. Pliant and sweet, with moderate intensity of f ...Read More »

1996 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, minerals, tobacco, leather and fresh herbs. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely Cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well." (8/2002) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. This classic, medium to full-bodied, traditionally made wine ...Read More »

1996 Haut-Bages Libéral, Pauillac

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This very good 1996 reveals an element of jammy black currant fruit intermixed with dried roasted herbs, sweet earthy smells, and new oak. It offers excellent definition, moderate tannin, medium to full body, and a long finish. As the wine sits in the glass, elements of the Cabernet Sauvignon’s sur-maturite become noticeable. It is a potential sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2017. Last tasted, 3/02. (RP)" (12/2002) Wine Spectator: "A rather discreet style, with understated currant and berry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a sil ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac

97 points Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but the ...Read More »

1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. (RP)" (8/2011) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. Starti ...Read More »

1996 Lagrange, St-Julien

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific grip. This makes the 1995 seem almost cooked by comparison. Still needs at least five or six years of cellaring. 'We always had unusual tastes in this wine, like eucalyptus and menthol, due to the cool September nights,' noted ...Read More »

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest be ...Read More »

1996 Kirwan, Margaux

90 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty plum and blackberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Just starting to come right now. (Web Only—2007)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should note that this property has significantly improved the quality of its wines, and now deserves a serious look in nearly every vintage. The 1996 Kirwan is a highly-extracted, rich, medium-bodied wine with a deep ruby/purple color, and ripe cassis fruit intermixed with a touch of new oak, prunes, and spice. The wine has come together nicely since I first tasted it from cask. It appears to be an excellent, n ...Read More »

1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (92RP, 92ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. (RP)" (04/1999)

1996 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035. 1996 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Latour, Pauillac (100RP, 96WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in color, the 1996 is classic Latour at its utmost. The nose offers a tantalizing array of complex notes including dried Chinese plums, toasted nuts, Indian spices and black olive tapenade over a core of dried cherries and aged meat. The palate is pure power that is stunningly balanced giving a generous level of fruit concentration perfectly offset by a high level of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness. Possessing a finish that just goes on and on, this is as good as it gets." (11/2012)

1996 Clerc Milon, Pauillac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is among the finest wines I have ever tasted from this estate. Lavishly oaked, with gobs of pain grille and rich fruit, it is massive and concentrated. The color is dense ruby/purple. The bouquet offers notes of roasted coffee, tobacco, and jammy cassis. Although surprisingly soft and opulent on the attack, the mid-section and finish reveal the wine's full body, high flavor extraction, and moderate tannin. This complete, large-scaled Clerc-Milon will be at its finest between 2005-2018. (RP)" (4/1999) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. 1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (98RP, 96ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A profound Leoville Las Cases, it is one of the great modern day wines of Bordeaux. This wine's hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, pain grille, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heaviness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining, and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St.-Julien. Despite the sweetness of the tannin, I would recommend cellaring this wine for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. (RP)" (04/1999)

1996 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Wine Spectator: "Shows wonderful berry, tobacco and vanilla character, is full- to medium-bodied, with velvety tannins and a mineral, spice aftertaste. Next to Haut-Brion, this is the wine from Pessac. (JS)" (1/1999) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deeper red-ruby. Quite withdrawn on the nose today; hints at roasted plum and Cuban cigar tobacco. Intensely flavored but firm and tight; sound acids and a solid tannic spine make this difficult to taste today. Finishes with a minty nuance. "In a period of somnolence," says Veronique Sanders. (ST)" (6/1999) K&L Notes: This big wine will reward the patient collector. Since ... Read More »

Thick and lush, with terrific volume in the mouth; harmonious acidity gives the flavors clarity and brightness. Very long, sweet finish." Ready to enjoy.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 8,750 cases made. (Web-2007)" K&L Notes: Rauzan-Ségla rivals Palmer as the second-best property in Margaux. 1996 Monbousquet, St-Emilion

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I extend my congratulations and accolades to the relatively young new proprietor of Monbousquet, Gerard Perse...he has reduced yields to under 30 hectoliters per hectare, and is doing everything to ensure a natural expression of his vineyards' terroirs...The 1996 Monbousquet is an outstanding effort. The wine is slightly tannic, but it exhibits an exotic nose of kirsch liqueur, cassis, roasted herbs, espresso, and mocha. It possesses excellent texture, impressive depth and richness, and sweet toasty oak. The saturated dark ruby/purple color suggests a de ...Read More »

Complex, with toasted oak, coffee and ripe fruit. It goes on and on. Wonderful. Big surprise. Get it. One of the best Right Bank wines in 1996. (Web-2007)" 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium-dark red. Vinous aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and smoky, nutty oak. 1996 Haut-Batailley, Pauillac

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine exhibits a dense purple color, as well as a wonderfully sweet, classic Pauillac nose of black currants and cigar box notes. Powerful for Haut-Batailley (normally a light, elegant, supple Pauillac), the 1996 possesses intense fruit, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a surprisingly long, layered finish. This appears to be a classic, and may merit an outstanding score. (RP)" (2/1998) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red.
