2013 Ao Yun, China $299.99
96 points James Halliday: "*Special Value Selection* In my mind, Xanadu has established itself as one of the greatest Margaret River winemakers. Small batch open-fermented, 35% given extended maceration, blended and matured in French oak (40% new barriques) for 14 months. Xanadu paints an unerring landscape of intense, elegant Margaret River Cabernet, with a stream of cassis fruit bordered by gravelly but fine tannins, oak insistently completing the picture. Great value. This year (2017) marks 40 years of Xanadu Wines and following decades of winemaking excellence, it has firmly c ...Read More »
The best Cabernet Sauvignon under $10 that I have tasted in nearly 9 years of working here. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer) This was produced from a 30-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla appellation (a large swath of land in the region of La Mancha), this Cab has delicious, balanced dark currant fruit, and a subtle influence from a six-month stint in American oak barrels. This nicely priced Spanish Cabernet has been a staff favorite for two vintages running.
97 points James Suckling: "Fabulous nose of mushrooms, like porcini, with black truffle that turns to citrus fruits such as orange and tangerine. Some vine bark. Full-bodied yet wonderfully firm and formed with refined and polished tannins. Super definition. Drink in 2018, but wonderful to experience." (1/2015) 95 points Vinous: "Just as magnificent from bottle as it was in barrel, the 2013 Napanook is dense, powerful and brooding, with searing intensity and extraordinary balance. Lavender, plums, violets, licorice and smoke are some of the signatures, but the 2013 exudes finesse, power and intensity. ...Read More »
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This full-bodied beauty traffics in cigar, tar and chocolate, expressing a rich, robust and smoky world of goodness. With a velvety texture, it continues to impress beyond the first sip, offering both memorable length and breadth. It blends together 80% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec." (2/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The outstanding 2013 Mountain Cuvée Proprietary Red, which is 80.4% Merlot, 17.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec, was aged ten months in a combination of new and used oak. The good news is that there were 16,000+ cases of this outstanding wine. ...Read More »
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This nicely made wine balances juicy black fruit with black licorice, flinty dried herb and a velvety texture. Medium bodied, it shows structure and grace within a context of ripeness and depth. (VB)" (12/2016)
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The aromas of cedar, fresh dark berries, thyme, garden herbs and flowers provide instant appeal, with woodsy accents following. Lively plum and raspberry flavors back them up, with fine-grained tannins and barrel accents speckled throughout. (SS)" (3/2016) Vinous: "(bottled three weeks before my visit in June): Healthy red-ruby. Pure, expressive aromas of plum, currant, menthol and cigar box. Lusher and more savory than the Merlot but not as suave or consistently ripe as the Petit Verdot, showing a note of chocolatey sweetness to go with its dark berry and spice fl ...Read More »

Better in 2020." (5/2016) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a big, lush, juicy wine with grip and a fully-formed body, accented with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. A great deal for the quality, it’s well made and deeply satisfying in highlights of coffee, cedar, mocha and blackberry, girded by a firm structure." Needs time to soften and come together but some may like its full-throttle style now." (1/2016) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Faust 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon comes largely from vineyards in southern Napa Valley’s Coombsville and Atlas Peak, but also includes some cross-AVA material from areas such as Yountville, Mt. Veeder, St. Helena and Rutherford. It is a well-made, ripe, concentrated, deep ruby/purple-colored Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet tannin, an attractive, cedary, licorice-infu ...Read More »

90 points Wine Spectator: "*Smart Buys* A fresh and inviting red, with crisp acidity set against a plush layer of well-formed blueberry and floral flavors, picking up spicy notes as the finish plays out. (HS)" (10/2015) Vinous: "Bright medium red. Lively aromas of cherry, cranberry and mint display a slightly candied character. Juicy, spicy red fruit flavors are straightforward and fresh. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. This winery has a large and varied portfolio of wines, including their four value picks, which consumers need to notice. (RP)" (12/2016) K&L Notes: Olema is ... 91 points Vinous: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous, entry-level wine for the estate. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, spice and gravel are all pushed forward. This is an unusually forward wine although there is plenty of the typical savory/graphite notes that are so typical of this site. (AG)" (2/2016) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from Monument Ridge is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in 37% new French oak. 100 points Decanter: "A captivating bouquet of violets, lilac, black fruit, blood orange and meaty soil tones is striking for its extravagent range and amplitude; and on the palate, the wine is three-dimensional, sophisticatedly savoury, and massive but refined. Tod Mostero remarks that, having crafted the 2013 Dominus, he can die happy as a winemaker. Selection here was especially rigorous, as the team wanted to realise the vintage's unparalleled potential as fully as possible, so only 3,500 cases were produced. A special label commemorates the 30th anniversary of Dominus Es ...Read More »

Dark chocolate too. This a real mouthful yet remains agile and powerful. Linear and long finish. Great precision. Best ever from Guado al Tasso?" (7/2016) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a fantastic wine. 95 points Wine Spectator: "*Top 100 Wines of 2016, Collectibles* Zeroes in on a rich, hedonistic core of wild berry, blackberry, plum and currant, with a graceful, elegant mouthfeel and supple, caressing tannins leading to a long, powerful and refined aftertaste that keeps reverberating while maintaining a strong personality. (JL)" (7/2016) 92 points James Suckling: "The full-throttle character is here as expected with lots of ripe fruit and toasted oak. Sage and mint. Silky tannins; the ripe fruit dominates. But it shows form and juiciness." (5/2016)
98 points Vinous: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a towering majestic wine. Rich, powerful and yet massively tannic, the 2013 possesses a stunning combination of super-ripe fruit, bright acids and plenty of supporting structure. In the early going, the Howell Mountain is a bit reticent, especially next to the Trailer, but after several hours, the vibrancy of the Howell Mountain bottling dazzles. Dunn's Howell Mountain Cabernet is without question one of the wines of the great 2013 vintage. Randy and Mike Dunn's 2013s are off the charts. The Napa Valley Cab ...Read More »
95 points James Halliday: "Interesting, very interesting. The colour, the freshness of the aromas and flavours, the finely sculpted tannins and the overall harmony suggest 13.5% alcohol, not 14.5%. All this conjecture is, of course, irrelevant: it is the outcome that matters - here a distillation of elegance." (2/2016) 93 points James Suckling: "Classic red fruits and chocolate here, boysenberry and bright cassis too. Really upbeat and bright, with a little gravel thread. Super refined palate with smooth and fleshy texture. The tannins spread fine and even and there is plenty of red berry fruit and chocolate ...Read More »
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Papillon Proprietary Red is 100% from Napa and is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This killer wine has an inky purple color and offers notes of espresso roast intermixed with white chocolate, creme de cassis, blackberry and a touch of toasty oak. The wine was aged 16 months in French oak, of which 40% was new. Broad and opulent, with great intensity, purity and depth, this is another stunner from Dave Phinney, a.k.a. Orin Swift. Because of its mid-weight structure, Montelena's Cabernet is one of the more approachable wines of the vintage, not to mention a real beauty. Full disclosure here... I have always considered Jacob's Creek as more of a big grocery store brand and haven't often carried the wines at K&L. However if there is one thing I've learned being a wine buyer it's to always be prepared to change your opinion and to let your palate do the decision making. I was quite simply blown away by the value for the money this Cab delivers. Two Lands is a collaborative project between Jacob's Creek and one of my longtime favorite Californian wine makers, Ehren Jordan of Turley/Failla fame! This is rocking Cab that coul... Read More »

Classic Coonawarra Cab packed full of blue fruit with lovely tobacco notes and whiffs of mint and eucalyptus. The fruit has great drive and purity. I think Coonawarra is one of the best areas for Cabernet in Australia and this bottle shows why for a pretty inexpensive price. Made by a small family owned operation the Raidis Family.
