2016 De Martino "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley

De Martino has arguably undergone one of the more radical transformations the wine world has seen in the past five years. The second largest owner of organic vineyards in Chile, with 740 acres in production, De Martino is stepping up to the plate in other ways as well: the winery is 100% carbon neutral and beginning in 2011 they have stopped purchasing new oak barrels. That year they purchased 140 tinajas, the traditional Chilean clay vessels that resemble amphoras, in varying shapes and sizes. They also invested in 5000l Austrian (Stockinger) foudres an... 2017 Viña Maquis "Calcu" Rosé Colchagua Valley

This is a delicious, fresh, crisp, easy drinking rosé. Red fruits at times present a nearly candied quality on the palate, but it does not detract in the slightlest from the refreshing qualities of the wine; in fact it seems to enhance them. Delicious stuff! Produced from 90% malbec, 10% petit verdot.

Drink or hold" (5/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The volume of the winery corresponds to the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, which in some countries is also labeled as "Reserva" but is the same wine. 2016 Roberto Henriquez "Pipeño" Pais Bio Bio

Concepción native Roberto Henriquez is one of the leaders in the small, but growing, insurgency of southern Chilean winemakers making bright, very low alcohol, minimal intervention wines from indigenous grape varieties in areas such as Itata, Maule, what is occasionally referred to as the Secano Interior and Bio Bio. This particular bottling contains 200 year-old (you read correctly, 200 yr old!) Pais. 2014 Garage Wine Company "Truquilemu" Carignan Maule Valley

Mossman describes this as "Understated and layered—driven by florality & finesse." It's a year of tremendous concentration but overall keeping the character of the place, which to me is the signature of this wine. 2016 Weon Carignane Maule Valley (Previously $14) Back In Stock!
2016 Weon Carignane Maule Valley (Previously $14)

Carignane has definitely become one of the defining grapes of Chile. The style is usually a bit juicier and less earthy than that of much of France, but still retaining fresh acid structure, low pH, and occasionally a subtle green, eucalyptus twang. The Weon, from the Maule Valley, is initially a bit funky, in a good way, but turns juicy and fleshes out nicely on the mid-palate. A great introduction to Chilean Carignane.
