2015 Chante Cigale "L'Apostrophe" Mediterranée (Previously $13)

Chante Cigale means singing cicada (a type of grasshopper/cricket). The property has been in the family since the 19th century and is currently run by Alexandre Favier who assumed the reins at the ripe old age of 20. The domaine is planted to 40 ha of red and 5 ha of white on 45 different parcels throughout the appellation. L'Apostrophe is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah grown in Travaillan, about 15 km from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is a fresh and fruity everyday sipper to drink early and often.

2010 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A stunning effort and showing the class of the vintage, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is comprised of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that spent 24 months in foudre prior to bottling. Rich, textured and medium to full-bodied, with ample black cherry, olive tapenade and subtle meatiness, this traditional effort stays pure and lively, with fine tannin emerging on the finish. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape is a beautiful wine in the vintage, and Marc compares it to the 2012. I’m not sure I agree, but there’s no denying the quality in this 2014. 2014 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

95 points Decanter: "Paul and Vincent Avril, a father and son team, have established themselves as one of the finest producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Despite being predominantly Grenache, it is reminiscent of an elegant northern Rhône Syrah with the texture of a Pinot. With a medium bodied intensity, it has a beautiful red fruit expression with some savoury notes. Harmony, finesse and elegance are probably the three words that best describe this beauty. One for the cellar." (11/2016) 93-95 points Vinous: "Deep ruby. Highly perfumed scents of candied dark berries, cola and lavender oil develop a su ...Read More »

Coming from a selection of the top plots and old vines of the estate, co-fermented, and with no destemming, it offers off-the-charts notes of cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, garrigue, licorice and toasted spice. Sappy, penetrating citrus and orchard fruit nectar and honeysuckle flavors stain the palate and display a compelling blend of richness and finesse, delivering serious power but no undue weight. 95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence appears to be the finest example of this wine since the 1998. Wonderfully rich, concentrated notes of roasted Provencal herbs, jammy black cherries, new saddle leather, and loamy soil are present in this stunningly rich, full-bodied wine. With excellent concentration, moderate tannin, and fabulous length as well as intensity, it should be released in 2009-2010, and will keep for 20-25 years." (10/2008) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This old-school version shows the dense, grippy profile of the vintage, with a great tannic backbone running thr ...Read More »

2009 Clos du Mont Olivet "Cuvée du Papet" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Needing more patience, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Papet (75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and the balance Syrah aged in foudre) comes from the estate’s oldest vines planted in such famous sites as Mont Olivet and Bois Dauphin. Usually about 1,000 cases are produced and the 2009, which tops the scales at 15.5% alcohol, is brilliant. A gorgeously aromatic bouquet of dark fruits, kirsch, underbrush, raspberries, licorice, spice box and pepper soars from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged wine. Opulent and voluptuously textured with moderate tan ...Read More »

1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "A big, rich wine with huge amounts of fruit oozing out of the glass. Great concentration and intensity, with licorice flavors from the Mourvèdre, finishing with chewy tannins. A great year for this wine, which should age well for 15 to 20 years." (12/2001) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Very youthful, with a juicy blast of red plum and fig fruit flavors on a racy frame, this also has plenty of spice, tar, plum cake and mineral in reserve, as the finish shows more structure and slowly darkens with time in the glass. Only just starting to hit its stride. (JM)" (9/2007) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The atypically Grenac ...Read More »

2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Wine Spectator: "*Collectibles* Thoroughly primal, with a torrent of raspberry and boysenberry fruit rushing forth. Only shows hints of its full range, with licorice, incense, graphite and mocha flavors fluttering in the background. Has an iron-clad structure, with a long finish that shows great cut and grip. Best from 2009 through 2025. (JM)" (5/2007) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Showing brilliantly, with a deep, rich and layered profile, the straight 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape has gorgeous black cherry, earth, underbrush and background meatiness that gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated and pure f ...Read More »

2003 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Reservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that ...Read More »

2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

98 points Wine Spectator: "*Top Wine of 2007* Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there's layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Far more backward than the 2003 or 2004 on release, but since this red typically puts on weight as it ages, it should be a monster--à la the 1990--when it reaches its peak. Best from 2009 through 2030. (JM)" (12/2007) 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of r ...Read More »

2010 Domaine Grand Veneur "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A monumental effort meriting a perfect score, the super-rich 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a 4,000-bottle blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah from 55- to 105-year-old vines and was aged for 18 months in small oak. The wine offers majestic blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and subtle Provencal herbs in the background. It is akin to chewing meat in the mouth given its viscosity and thickness. This utterly amazing wine comes close to being over the top, but it pulls back just in time. A massive Chateau ...Read More »

2001 Domaine de Beaurenard "Cuvée Boisrenard" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There have been a number of spectacular vintages of Domaine de Beaurenard’s luxury cuvee, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard, but the 2001 may be the finest they have ever produced. An inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, graphite, and a touch of barrique. The explosive bouquet is followed by an expansive, full-bodied, powerful wine with great purity, tremendous multilayered flavor intensity, and beautifully integrated wood, acidity, and tannin. It possesses structure, grip, and a finish that lasts well over a ...Read More »

2013 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

92 points Vinous: "Bright ruby. Assertively perfumed aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, spicecake and garrigue, and suggestions of cola and woodsmoke. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering deeply concentrated boysenberry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that become spicier and more energetic with air. Supple tannins build on the tenacious finish, which shows outstanding clarity and resonating spiciness. (JR)" (4/2016) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Features a hearty core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit inlaid with prominent tobacco and chestnut leaf notes that impart a deci ...Read More »

2006 Pierre Usseglio "Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the gems in the vintage is the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Mon Aieul, which in 2006 was 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah. Elegant, seamless and weightless, yet with full-bore intensity in its kirsch liqueur, garrigue and licorice-driven aromas and flavors, this sensational 2006 provides that rare mix of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. It’s singing today, but will keep for another decade. (JD)" (3/2016) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Silky and forward, with black tea, melted licorice, hoisin sauce, mocha and currant fruit flavors gliding along cocoa-tinged tannins. Additional hin ...Read More »
