2014 Martin Ray "Coast Grade Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "***Editors' Choice*** There’s a rugged earthiness and delicious meaty character to this fantastic bottling, which shows dried cranberries, dried olallieberry, smoked pork and hummingbird sage on the brawny nose. A similar power infects the palate, where red and black cherry meet with plum, mulberry, cola, shaved chocolate and a deepening sage character, finishing on crushed mint. (VB)" (8/2016)

2014 Varner "Bee Block-Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay Top Pick!
2014 Varner "Bee Block-Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

Jancis Robinson: "A little cooler than the Home Block. Solid stuff with good extract. Sweet start and proper beginning, middle and end to this wine. Very different from the Santa Barbara style. More ageable? Some spiciness." (2/2016) K&L Notes: At K&L, we are always HUGE fans of the Varner brothers' wines. These are carefully crafted, terroir-driven Chardonnays that drink well on release and also age very well. This bottling hails from the Bee Block at the Varners' Spring Ridge Vineyard, which features 24-year-old vines planted to a northeast-facing slope. The vines are dry-farmed and... Read More »

2013 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

90 points Vinous: "The 2013 Pinot Noir is gracious, lifted and quite pretty, but it also offers plenty of depth, albeit in an understated style. Rose petal, mint and sweet red stone fruits are all nicely expressive in this delicate Pinot Noir. Jeffrey Patterson adds that in 2013 the harvest started in mid-August. (AG)" (7/2015)

2013 Kathryn Kennedy "Small Lot" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Though the 2013 has yet to be professionally reviewed, the 2012 earned praise from the Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Small Lot has a subtle Bordeaux-like flair in its tobacco leaf, wild herbs, lead pencil shaving and currant-styled bouquet. This gives way to a medium-bodied, juicy, elegant and lightly textured Cabernet that has moderate to good concentration, integrated acidity and a good finish. It's a classic Bordeaux blend from this region to enjoy over the coming 6-7 years." (10/2015)

2014 Ridge Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

93 points Wine Spectator: "*Highly Recommended* Starts assertively oaky, with cedar and matchstick notes, but transitions into a more compelling elixir, offering a rich mix of pear, melon, honeydew and spice flavors as the oak recedes and lets the fruit come forth. Drink now. 3,275 cases made." (7/2016) K&L Notes: This comes from Ridge's famed estate vineyard, Monte Bello, which has fractured limestone soils over decomposing Franciscan green stone mixed with clay and loam. Until 2009 this was bottled simply as Santa Cruz Mountains, and is normally available only to Monte Bello Collector member... Read More »

Jancis Robinson: "Smoky, lively, very lightly reductive nose. Pretty sweet and broad on the front palate. Tastes a bit more advanced – and jujube – than I would have expected from such a young wine. Lots of early reward. Nice backbone sneaks up on you though." (2/2016)

2012 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

91 points Vinous: "The 2012 Chardonnay is a beautiful, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Hints of orange peel and mint add character to this classy, understated Chardonnay. The style is all about textural softness and polish. The 2012 is about 60% declassified juice from the Mount Eden program and 40% juice from the Domaine Eden property itself. 2012 Neely "Hidden Block-Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Starting out slightly reductive, the 2012 Pinot Noir Hidden Block Spring Ridge Vineyard opens up nicely with air and shows lots of forest floor, currants, mushroom and earth in a medium-bodied, supple, nicely textured and balanced package. Certainly showing the more earthy, underbrush and darker end of the spectrum, it should benefit from a year or two in the cellar and drink nicely through 2023. 95 points Vinous: "Mount Eden's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a striking interplay of ripe, flamboyant fruit and supporting mountain structure. Fresh, vibrant and energetic to the core, this stunning, beautifully delineated Cabernet Sauvignon might need another decade to show the full breadth of its pedigree, but it's all there. Plum, black cherry, mocha, sweet herbs, cloves and violets are some of the notes that are laced into the voluptuous, racy finish. Expressive savory undertones are a reminder this is a mountain wine, but the raciness is pure 2012. Osocalis Rare Alambic Brandy (750ml)

Osocalis is a small, artisanal distillery in Soquel, California. The name Osocalis is the original Native American name for Soquel, today part of the greater Santa Cruz area. They use a small (100 gallon) antique alambic Charentais still, imported from Cognac, to produce brandies using grapes and apples from the cooler coastal regions of California. They strive to produce products that have the length, elegance and finesse of Old World brandies, such as Cognac and Calvados, but with the fruit intensity and structure of California wines. 2010 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Vinous: "The 2010 Monte Bello is just as stunning as it has always been. Today, the 2010 appears to be entering a closed phase, so it is best left alone for at least another 5-10 years, perhaps longer. The signatures are super-ripe, exotic fruit, sweet aromatics and firm tannins, all of which ensure the 2010 will be utterly magnificent in a few decades. The growing season was characterized by mostly cold weather, with an unexpectedly intense heat spike in mid-October that gave the fruit a final push. The 2013 Amphitheater is a classic Varner Chardonnay built on phenolic intensity and plenty of savory/floral notes that add nuance, while the fruit is pushed a bit into the background. 2014 Calera Mt. Harlan Chardonnay

The Mt. Harlan Chardonnay Vineyard was planted in 1984 on the same south facing slope as the Mills Pinot Noir. This vineyard was planted on its own roots using plant material from stray Chardonnay vines that were found interspersed among the Pinot vines of the original vineyards. Each year this vineyard yields only slightly more than 2 tons per acre of very intense flavorful Chardonnay fruit. Leaner and more mineral than a typical California Chardonnay the wines carry a creamy texture and a leanness that are unique due to the limestone soil.

96 points Wine & Spirits: "The cool 2011 season turned out a pristine vintage of Monte Bello, made from Cabernet (88 percent) grown on a limestone-inflected ridge high above Silicon Valley, blended with some Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The team at Ridge let the fruit recover for two weeks following an early October storm before picking, and were more aggressive in their extraction than normal, drawing as much color and structure as possible from the delicate fruit. Stylistically, the 2010 is a little richer than Mount Eden fans are used to, but all the elements are in the right place. Out of barrel as well as post-bottling I liked this wine a lot, and it has changed very little from when I last tasted it in February, 2010. 1997 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

This wine comes from two vineyards planted side by side in 1981. One is modern, linear, and trellised; the other is old-fashioned, organic and un-trellised. A study in contrasts for sure, yet both yielded remarkable fruit in 1997. This is a year when everything ripened fully, evenly, and early for Mount Eden. Bid on this bottle of 1993 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (93RP, 92WS). 93 points Robert Parker: "The 1993 Ridge Monte Bello (already bottled) is a tightly-wrapped, densely-colored, pure, rich, full-bodied Cabernet with moderately intense aromas of vanilla, black-raspberries, currants, and minerals. This rich wine cuts a deep path on the palate, with high tannin, adequate acidity, and a long, muscular, formidably-endowed finish. Extremely unevolved and young, it needs 7-10 years of cellaring. When young, this wine rarely reveals its full potential.
