2013 Thomas Fogarty Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay Top Pick!
2013 Thomas Fogarty Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice and #14 in Best 100 of 2016* From one of the preeminent Chardonnay producers in the country comes their least expensive yet perhaps most stunning bottling, showing strong lemon rind, sea salt, Gravenstein apple and a floral touch of honeysuckle on the nose. The wondrously zippy and saline palate is framed by a grippy, grapefruit-rind-led tension, but opens just enough to allow the slightest hints of lemon curd and delicate marzipan warmth. 2013 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay Top Pick!
2013 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

93 points Vinous: "Domaine Eden's 2013 Chardonnay is subtle, poised and gracious to the core. Dried pear, dried flowers, sage, mint and chamomile grace the palate in this understated, exquisite Chardonnay. Hints of smoke, slate and dried pear reappear on the super-classic, expressive finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. Quite simply, the 2013 Domaine Eden Chardonnay is a tremendous wine for the money. In 2013, the blend is approximately 72% declassified Mt. 2012 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "*** Cellar Selection *** Extremely elegant and restrained at first on the nose, this bottling eventually shows gravel and crushed rocks, with hints of blackberry and forest underbrush also emerging. A very firm structure weaves together an incredibly well-integrated wine, with dense mulberry and dried-fennel notes that morph into crushed herbs with time. Drink 2018-2032. (MK)" (12/2016) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot) is beautiful. 2013 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of the greatest Chardonnays made in California each vintage, this bottling blends riper elements of yellow peach and honey with the tension of tangerine rind and pink-grapefruit pith on the nose. The palate is very energetic and tangy, with orange peels, crushed sea shells and a touch of salt hanging from an extremely well-chiseled structure. (MK)" (11/2016) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pure silk on the palate, the 2013 Chardonnay Estate offers textbook notes of buttered apples, brioche, toasted bread and hints of minerality to go with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful pur ...Read More »

2014 Neely "Holly's Cuvée-Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay (Previously $48)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Chardonnay Holly's Cuvee is a big, rich and sexy white that nevertheless manages to stay fresh, livey and pure. Possessing lots of tropical fruits, flower oil, honeysuckle and a hint of peach, it's already hard to resist, and I don't see any need to delay gratification either. I suspect this will be the last vintage made by Jim and Bob Varner, who no longer works with the fruit from the Spring Valley Vineyard. (JD)" (10/2016)

A similar power infects the palate, where red and black cherry meet with plum, mulberry, cola, shaved chocolate and a deepening sage character, finishing on crushed mint. (MK)" (8/2016)

2013 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Estate is one of the stars from the appellation, and the vintage. Offering fabulous notes of black cherries, currants, crushed rocks and sous bois, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building tannin and a killer finish. This is a sensational Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed today, or cellared for a decade or more. The palate is framed in lively acidity and strong minerality, presenting flavors of white rocks, lemon peel and brie rind. A nice amount of grip will ensure some aging potential too." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (97VN, 96ST, 96W&S, 91RP, 90CG, 90WE). Vinous: "The 2010 Monte Bello is just as stunning as it has always been. Today, the 2010 appears to be entering a closed phase, so it is best left alone for at least another 5-10 years, perhaps longer. The signatures are super-ripe, exotic fruit, sweet aromatics and firm tannins, all of which ensure the 2010 will be utterly magnificent in a few decades. The growing season was characterized by mostly cold weather, with an unexpectedly intense heat spike in mid-October that gave the fruit a final push. One of the things that makes this vintage so compelling is the interplay of firm structural elements from the cold year and a high level of ripeness that was achieved late. In my view, the 2010 is one of the most thrilling recent Monte Bellos, however it won't be ready to drink for a number of years and it won't peak for quite some time beyond that.

2014 Varner "Amphitheater Block-Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

Orange peel, mint, graphite, candied lemon and sweet floral notes abound in this deeply nuanced Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay. There is a lot to like here. (AG)" (7/2016) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Varner's 2014 Chardonnay Amphitheater Block Spring Ridge Vineyard spent eight months in 25% new French oak. There is a hint of reduction, but that is not a negative. Readers who enjoy focused Chardonnays will find much to admire in the 2014. This is a gorgeous wine from Ridge. Lemon, white pepper and mint add the closing layers of nuance. In 2014, Ridge bottled less of their Monte Bello Chardonnay than the norm, which may be one of the reasons the Estate is so expressive. The flavors are dark and intense throughout, but it is the wine's center and overall depth that are most compelling at this stage. Still quite primary, the Upper Picnic could use a few years in bottle to enter the sweet spot. The Upper Picnic offers a compelling interplay of intensity and freshness. Osocalis Rare Alambic California Brandy (750ml)

Osocalis is a small, artisanal distillery in Soquel, California. The name Osocalis is the original Native American name for Soquel, today part of the greater Santa Cruz area. They use a small (100-gallon) antique alambic Charentais still, imported from Cognac, to produce brandies using grapes and apples from the cooler coastal regions of California. They strive to create products that have the length, elegance and finesse of old world brandies, such as Cognac and Calvados, but with the fruit intensity and structure of California wines. 2008 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (97RP, 95ST, 95W&S, 94JS, 92WS, 90WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Monte Bello is striking. It is a decidedly muscular Monte Bello endowed with layers of dark fruit. Tobacco, mint, asphalt and crushed rocks develop in the glass, adding tons of complexity and finesse. A long, saline finish rounds things out beautifully. In 2008 the cold growing season stretched into October and the wine definitely has the feel of a cool vintage. The spring frost and the second year of drought conditions lowered yields significantly. Yields were just 1.25 tons per acre on average, but some of the older vineyards came in at less than 1 ton per acre. The balance of fruit, tannin and structure is simply extraordinary, but the wine needs time, most likely lots of it. In 2008 the blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. 97+ (AG)" (08/2011)

Osocalis XO Alambic Brandy (750ml)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Top 50 Spirits of 2011* From a small family-run distillery, this blend of 'older' California brandies has a vibrant golden-orange color and a sweet apples-and-honey note. On the palate, creamy citrus flavors finish big and rich, with caramel, ginger and cinnamon notes, and a soft texture. Pair with a fruit dessert, like apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Come to think of it, this brandy would be dynamite simply poured over ice cream, too. (KN)" (12/2011) K&L Notes: Brand new from the local legend of Osocalis (based in the Santa Cruz Mountains)! The combination of the vintage and a bit more of a hands-off approach in the cellar has resulted in a deep, highly expressive Pinot Noir endowed with real class and personality. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters adds to the wine's aromatic and palate presence. The 2014 was not fined or filtered. Readers should expect a slightly cloudy wine. (AG)" (2/2016)

2015 Arnot-Roberts "Trout Gulch" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

There is some underpinning of the salinity that makes the wines from this site so distinctive, but this is a freakishly ripe Chardonnay from Arnot-Roberts. Orange peel and exotic spice notes add to the wine's eccentric feel. The fruit was also picked a bit later than normal, because the acidity was too high for the wine's sugar ripeness. As a result, the alcohol is also a bit high by Arnot-Roberts standards. (AG)" (3/2017) K&L Notes: Arnot-... Read More »

2015 Calera Mt. Harlan Chardonnay

The Mt. Harlan Chardonnay Vineyard was planted in 1984 on the same south facing slope as the Mills Pinot Noir. This vineyard was planted on its own roots using plant material from stray Chardonnay vines that were found interspersed among the Pinot vines of the original vineyards. Each year, this vineyard yields only slightly more than 2 tons per acre of very intense flavorful Chardonnay fruit. Leaner and more mineral than a typical California Chardonnay, the wines carry a creamy texture and a leanness that are unique due to the limestone soil.

The Hidden Block is one of the more delicate, acid-driven Pinots I have tasted from Varner. Bid on this bottle of 1996 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 9% Petit Verdot that reached 13.4% alcohol) represents a severe selection of only 40% of the vineyard's crop. A blockbuster, powerful, concentrated Monte Bello, it possesses an opaque purple color, plenty of spicy oak in the nose (100% American oak has always been used for aging Monte Bello), and a deep, layered, concentrated style. There is plenty of tannin, but it is sweeter than that found in the 1997, and the wine is more concentrated and extracted. There is a touch of oak in the flavors, which are otherwise dominated by minerals and jammy black fruits. This is a terrific Monte Bello that will have 30+ years of life. (RP)" (12/1998)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2009 Rhys "Horseshoe Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (94BH, 94RP, 94ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is the most virile wine in this lineup. Black cherries, mint, iron and crushed rocks come together in this dramatic, generous Pinot. The fleshiness of the fruit nearly covers the tannins, but they are lurking beneath the wine’s considerable fleshiness. Menthol, pine and a host of other dark, balsamic notes wrap around the insistent, powerful finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (AG)" (08/2011)

2001 Ridge "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A resoundingly great effort from this iconic producer, Ridge's 2001 is a spectacular, still young but promising wine... A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by extravagant, generous aromas of pen ink, lead pencil shavings, spice box and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied and silky textured, but secondary nuances have not yet begun to develop as it is still very primary, tasting more like a 3-4 year old Monte Bello than one that is ten years of age. Nevertheless, it reveals spectacular concentration, a voluptuous texture, a rare opulence for a Ridg ...Read More »

2011 Rhys "Horseshoe Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Rhys "Horseshoe Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (94RP, 94ST, 94VN, 93BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most youthful 2011s in the lineup, the 2011 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard has serious amount of pepper to go with a darker slant to its fruit; blackberry, ground herbs, charcoal, smoked earth and licorice are just some of the nuances here, and blind, cool-climate Syrah would be the common guess. Nevertheless, it's all Pinot on the palate and has a medium-bodied, supple, seamless and elegant texture that carries plenty of fruit, fine tannin and good acidity that stays integrated and clean through finish. This is a gorgeous 2011 that readers need to seek out. (JD)" (04/2015)

2009 Rhys "Skyline Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Rhys "Skyline Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (94BH, 94ST, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Intensely perfumed, assertive bouquet evokes redcurrant, raspberry and spicecake complemented by smoky minerals and building florality. Pure, precise and deeply concentrated but shockingly lithe, offering sweet red fruit flavors and a steely mineral spine. Unwinds with air to offer deeper cherry and black raspberry qualities while maintaining energy and focus. The finish is racy, subtly sweet and very persistent. Definitely give this a few years of bottle age. " (06/2011)
