2014 Stags' Leap Winery Napa Valley Petite Sirah

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Sirah, which is their basic introductory model, so to speak, is a sensational wine in its own right. Opaque purple-colored, loads of white flowers, blueberries and blackberries are present in this wine, which should drink well for 20-25 years A winery often confused with the Stags Leap Wine Cellars, but owned by the giant Treasuries Wines consortium, they are doing some creative work and making extremely interesting wines. 91+ Points (RP)" (12/2016)

2013 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

From the winery: "Picked at atypically low sugars for the variety. Fermented in small lots with some stem inclusion and some native yeasts. Aged on lees in less than 10% new oak. From a limestone and shale rich block on Pierce Ranch in southern Monterey County. We pick Petite Sirah from two blocks in the Y-Ranch section of the Pierce Vineyard. Block 1 is a west facing rocky hillside littered with chunks of white limestone, which at times are as large as two fists. "

2013 Girard Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A successful wine from Girard, their 2013 Petite Sirah has good, deep fruit, cleanliness and purity, and some wood and spice in a medium-bodied, pleasant style. Drink it over the next 5 years. (RP)" (12/2015) Wine Spectator: "There's a touch of savory here, with a beefy teriyaki note to complement the core of rustic, juicy blackberry and dark plum flavors. Shows plenty of spice and cedar accents on the firm finish. Drink now through 2025. (MW)" (12/2015)

2011 Retro Cellars Howell Mountain Petite Sirah

93 points James Suckling: "Aromatic with rose petal, spice, and green peppercorns. Gun powder. Subtle. Full to medium body, fine tannins and a fresh and citrusy aftertaste. Dunn family of Napa cabernet fame makes a very cool red here. About 500 cases made. Drink now." (6/2016) 93 points Vinous: "The 2011 Petite Sirah Howell Mountain offers notable intensity, with plenty of blue/blackish fruit, lavender, mint, violet and sage overtones. Refined and super-expressive, the 2011 is an absolute joy to taste today. All the elements are very nicely balanced in a surprisingly tamed Petite that will drink well ...Read More »

This is no ordinary Petite Sirah, but then, few are. 2015 Bedrock "Drummond's Cuvée" California Petite Sirah

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A barrel sample of the 2015 Petite Sirah Drummond’s Cuvée comes primarily from Mendocino’s Eaglepoint Ranch, which used to make up Sean Thackrey’s Sirius Syrah. This massive, rich, concentrated Petite Sirah is a 50-year wine. Black as a moonless night, it displays notes of graphite, incense, camphor, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. It is still in barrel, but it’s a monster. More on this once it’s in bottle next year. 2014 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah (Previously $120)

94-97 points Vinous: "A deep, powerful wine, the 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is also the most explosive of these Petites. Inky dark fruit, wild flowers, graphite and savory herbs all raced across the palate in a wine endowed with pure energy and concentration. This viscerally thrilling Petite is going to require patience, but it is pretty special, even today. (AG)" (10/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard was the most closed down and tightest of all of Turley’s Petite Syrahs. 2015 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The peppery, scorched earth, plum and licorice-scented 2015 Petite Sirah Tierra (100% Petite Sirah aged all in used puncheons) is medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and fresh, with lively acidity and first rate purity. It stays a touch compressed and narrow on the finish, but is certainly an outstanding wine. It has some tannin to integrate, so give bottles a year or so after release. I continue to love these wines from Paul Gordon, all of which come from Mendocino County in the northern part of California. Given the quality, these wines are ser ...Read More »

2013 Jeff Cohn Cellars "Sweetwater Springs Vineyard" Russian River Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lastly, the 100% Petite Sirah 2013 Landy Sweetwater Springs Vineyard is another 200-case cuvée from a steep hillside vineyard planted in loamy clay and alluvial soils. This wine spent 16 months in 100% new French oak prior to being bottled. It is a powerhouse at 15.5% natural alcohol. Powerful, dense, and excruciatingly tannic, it will be at its finest between 2008-2025." (12/2003) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Tremendously rich, full-bodied, and viscous, with 13.2% alcohol, sweet tannin, and well-integrated wood, this profound Petite Syrah will be at its finest between 2008-2020+. If it is showing any age after a decade of cellaring, I will be as surprised as its producers. An opaque black/blue color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of blackberry and creme de cassis blended with spices, minerals, and earth. 1997 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I do not believe I have ever tasted a more concentrated, essence-like wine than Turley's 1997 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard. Made from 55-year old vines that yielded only 9.8 tons of fruit for five acres, this opaque black-colored wine is the biggest, richest, most concentrated, tannic wine I have ever tasted. It will need at least a decade to shed some of its ferocious tannin, and will undoubtedly last for 40-50 years. Even more remarkable is its purity and overall equilibrium. 1997 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard (from 80-year old vines) assaults the palate with such an overload of fruit, tannin, and extract that the taster's first impression is that this is something more than table wine. It is a massive, almost uncivilized, wildly out of control Petite Syrah that will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and last for 30 or more. I have been conservative in my judgment because the tannin nearly melted the fillings in my teeth, but this is an amazing, astonishing wine that will be fascinating to follow over the next 3-4 decades. Of the 2007 Ridge Vineyards "East Bench" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel,Connoisseurs Guide writes: "Here is marvelous proof that high ripeness and fine balance need not be mutually exclusive, for while the wine checks in at 15.4% alcohol, it is as deep in defined fruit and as carefully structured as any Zinfandel in this month's survey. It is simply brimming with berries from the first, and, while fully ripe, it is not in the least bit overdone. It is laced with briary spice and complementary oak, and its long, tannin-firmed finish is as well-focused on outgoing fruit as its intense, deep and handsomely crafted aromas. As longtime readers know, I believe this is the most underrated varietal in California, but it’s not exactly a fun wine to drink young. The Rattlesnake Acres will drink well in 3-4 years and keep for 15 or more. (RP)" (1/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium-deep ruby. Smoky aromas of blackberry, black pepper, black olive, bacon fat, eucalyptus and meat. Firm acidity gives the blackberry and pepper flavors an enticingly juicy quality and lovely inner-mouth lift. 2003 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah New!
2003 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard exhibits a deep purple color and a nose of creosote, scorched earth, blue and black fruits, minerals, and hints of pepper and white flowers. A rich wine from a vineyard adjacent to the library in St. Helena, it should be at its finest between 2008-2025. (RP)" (2/2005) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry and fruity Tellicherry pepper, with exotic suggestions of apricot and white flowers; high-toned and slightly port-like. Then sweet, exotic and penetrating. Finishes with big, ripe tannins." (6/2005) K&L Notes: Turley ... Read More »

2004 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Petite Syrah reveals a black/purple color as well as notes of graphite, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, creme de cassis, a liqueur of mineral-like intensity, and huge tannin and concentration. The 2004 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most backward, tannic, and structured. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years. (RP)" (12/2005) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Superripe black raspberry nose shows a distinctly porty quality. Fat, sweet and saline, with dark f ...Read More »

1999 Turley "Rattlesnake Acres" Napa Valley Petite Syrah New!
1999 Turley "Rattlesnake Acres" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, deep, opaque ruby. Subtle, brooding aromas of blackberry, violet and pepper. Extraordinarily concentrated, superripe, essence-of-berry flavors border on painful today. This has really uncanny intensity. The explosive fruit blows past the substantial tannins on the finish. Wow! (ST)" (6/2001) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Amazing is the 1999 Petite-Syrah Rattlesnake Acres (225 cases, 14.8% alcohol). With an appearance reminiscent of vintage Port, it offers notes of blackberries, smoke, and minerals. This blockbuster, gargantuan wine boasts awesome concentration, exquisite purity ...Read More »

1999 Behrens & Hitchcock "Barcini Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A tannic beast is the 1999 Petite Sirah Barcini Vineyard. The wine is a dense purple color, with notes of earth, smoke, licorice, and black fruits. Quite sweet on the attack, full-bodied, with rustic tannin in the finish, this wine will require 5-6 years of cellaring and keep for up to two decades. (RP)" (2/2002) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Healthy ruby. Sweet, sappy aromas of crystallized berries, smoked meat, mocha and iron. Complex and medium-bodied, with leather and licorice flavors currently dominating dark berry and cherry fruit. Doesn't have quite the middle-palate fat and tex ...Read More »

1996 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah New!
1996 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96-99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Turley continues to offer two of the blackest, densest, richest Petite Syrahs ever produced in California. Perhaps the greatest Petite Syrah I have ever tasted is Turley's 1996 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard. From a 5-acre parcel of vines, only 6 tons of fruit were harvested. For a Turley offering, this wine possesses a conservative 15% alcohol. This full-bodied monster exhibits remarkable equilibrium, unprecedented purity and richness of fruit for a Petite Syrah, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. It is a compellingly rich, multidimensional wine ...Read More »

1993 Turley "Hayne" Napa Valley Petite Syrah New!
1993 Turley "Hayne" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

91 points Robert Parker: "Petite Sirah lovers will go ballistic when they taste the two 1993 offerings from Turley Cellars. The 1993 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard (from a vineyard planted in 1950) reveals a dense purple color, full body, an earth, pepper, and black fruit-scented nose, concentrated flavors, and a muscular, tannic finish. These are extraordinary wines!" (06/95) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Big, ripe, dark and richly flavored, this has a tight core of juicy plum, currant and black cherry, and finishes with a mouthful of chewy tannins and a spi... 1996 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Syrah New!
1996 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

92-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Turley continues to offer two of the blackest, densest, richest Petite Syrahs ever produced in California. Alongside its siblings, the 1996 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard looks like a wimp with only 13.8% alcohol, but what concentration and intensity this wine offers. From a 4.5-acre vineyard, only 3 tons of fruit were harvested in 1996. The result is an opaque purple-colored wine with a dense, mineral, earthy, peppery, blackberry-scented nose, huge, ripe, thick flavors, gobs of glycerin and fruit, and a long, moderately tannic finish. My guess is that this ...Read More »

2005 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Although pinched with screeching tannins, the backward, unevolved 2005 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge will repay those who have the foresight to lay it away for 10-15 years. It is loaded with potential, but is nearly impenetrable at present. 91-93+ (RP)" (12/2006) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby color. Knockout nose combines black fruits, smoke, licorice, pepper and a strong rocky character. Quite suave on entry, then thick but vibrant in the middle, with powerful, well- integrated acidity accentuating the impression of intensity. A very tactile, concentrated petite sirah wit ...Read More »
