2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah (Previously $30)

From the winery: "Rich and dense, the 2013 Brunswick Petite Sirah is a beautiful expression of a world class vineyard. Aromatics of fresh black cherries, blueberry cobbler, and dark chocolate, the wine hits the palate with a rush of accompanying flavors. The wine crosses the mid palate and fills the mouth with balanced acid and tannins to match the wines' density. Enjoy with grilled anything, or on a cool autumn evening on the patio. Pack a toothbrush!"

2014 J. Runquist "Salman Vineyard" Clarksburg Petite Sirah

Jeff Runquist banked 19 years making wine in California before opening his own winery. During that time, he developed close relationships with growers and is now able to source first-rate fruit for his own wines. Petite Sirah is the best selling varietal for Jeff Runquist Wines, who is based out of Amador County. This Salman Vineyard bottling hails from the Clarksburg AVA on the delta of the Sacramento River where it benefits from cool breezes from the San Francisco Bay. Although there are many quality vine plantings in Clarksburg, grapes are almost alwa... Read More »

2013 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Coming from the cool-climate Theopolis Vineyard in the Yorkville Highlands, the 2013 Petite Sirah Tierra is a blend 100% Petite Sirah that was aged in 25% new oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its inky purple color is followed by lots of black and blue fruits, violet, pepper, graphite and hints of underbrush on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, supple, pure and polished, it's a beautifully civilized, if not elegant, expression of Petite Sirah that will have 10-15 years of longevity. 2013 Joseph Swan "Bastoni Vineyard" Russian River Valley Petite Sirah

From the producer: "This wine is as dark as our tannat, which is saying a lot! Deep, deep red. Although the nose is not fully developed as of yet, it is about black plum and, even though it was aged in neutral French oak barrels, a hint of wood. In the mouth it’s power is obvious but at the same time it exhibits balance and even a bit of elegance. Sort of like a middle linebacker doing ballet. It is a bit juicy but with a tannic edge and great acidity. Knowing what I do about how many petite sirahs tend to age, we plan to put several cases in the librar... Read More »

2013 J. Runquist "Salman Vineyard" Clarksburg Petite Sirah

According to the winery: "The 2013 vintage has a deep purple color that clings to the walls of the glass. Bright aromas of sweet ripe dark fruits; marionberry and boysenberry marry with a bouquet of mocha and hazelnut to create an alluring temptation. The flavors are juicy and succulent with loads of black currant and toasted oak. The mature fully integrated tannins express themselves as a rich viscous texture that leads to a lingering finish that seems to go on forever. While the tannins are in check, a few years in the cellar will add an additional dim... Read More »

2013 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino County Petite Sirah

Bolinas-based Sean Thackrey has made a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch since 1997, and are we glad he has! This is a wine to put away in your cellar (or closet) for however long you can stand it! When you do get around to opening it, watch it explode from the glass and change over the hour or two it takes for you two drink the bottle, offering such an array of aromas and flavors it is impossible to catalog them here. Sean Thackrey is one of the most influential people in the Bay Area Food & Wine community, and has been for nearly three decades. Al... Read More »

2003 Pride Mountain Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated bright ruby color. Explosive, high-toned aromas of blackberry and licorice. Powerful, even a bit tough, with an initial blueberry flavor that was joined by cherry syrup as the wine opened in the glass. A youthfully medicinal wine that finishes with huge tannins and pronounced acidity. Like the syrah, this will need time in bottle. This Petite Sirah, from fruit purchased from Switchback Ridge, will be the last vintage of this wine under the Pride label. (ST)" (5/2006)

Wine Spectator: "Fragrant white pepper and wild berry aromas are delightfully bright, with a juicy crunch amid the tight tannins. Spice, cedar and blackberry flavors stick around on the tannic finish. (MW)" (2/2008) K&L Notes: 93 points Stephen Tanzer: "Bright ruby color. Knockout nose combines black fruits, smoke, licorice, pepper and a strong rocky character. Quite suave on entry, then thick but vibrant in the middle, with powerful, well- integrated acidity accentuating the impression of intensity. 1997 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard (from 80-year old vines) assaults the palate with such an overload of fruit, tannin, and extract that the taster's first impression is that this is something more than table wine. It is a massive, almost uncivilized, wildly out of control Petite Syrah that will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and last for 30 or more. I have been conservative in my judgment because the tannin nearly melted the fillings in my teeth, but this is an amazing, astonishing wine that will be fascinating to follow over the next 3-4 decades. 2005 Rosenblum "Rhodes Vineyard" Redwood Valley Petite Sirah

89 points Robert Parker: "With the exception of the Heritage Clones cuvee, Rosenblum Cellars’ Petite Sirahs are all inky/purple-colored. The Rhodes Vineyard is a wine of unbridled richness, huge tannins, massive fruit, earth, purity, and loads of blackberry, blueberry, incense, and graphite characteristics. The 2005 Petite Sirah Rhodes Vineyard is excruciatingly tannic at present, but there is plenty of density. It was the most difficult cuvee to evaluate because of its high tannin and closed personality." (Aug 2008)

It has gobs of dark cherry and black fruit flavors, spice and licorice aromas. Approachable as a young wine, it will also reward additional cellaring."

Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. Tremendously rich, full-bodied, and viscous, with 13.2% alcohol, sweet tannin, and well-integrated wood, this profound Petite Syrah will be at its finest between 2008-2020+. It is an intriguing, provocative effort boasting an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of graphite intermixed with melted licorice, espresso, chocolate, blackberries, blueberries, and concentrated creme de cassis. A blockbuster Petite Sirah, inky purple in color with a glorious nose of charcoal, black raspberry, blueberry, creme de cassis, licorice, and crushed rocks, it is very full-bodied, powerful, with sweet tannin, decent acidity, and a 45+-second finish. This is an infantile wine that will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and last 25-30+ years. (RP)" (12/2007) 92-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. It is tremendously perfumed, offering up scents of white flowers, licorice, cassis, blackberries, and espresso. This dense, full-bodied, and evolved, offering may be civilized enough to drink in 10 years. It has 25 years of life ahead of it. One Puff from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Here is a deep, brooding, jammy-smelling wine whose closed-in nature is repeated in spades in its tannic, coarse, tight flavors. Hints of blackberries, raspberries, vanilla and creme brulee hint at charm to come with long-aging, and those who like the mass and muscle of Petite Sirah are going to find lots of enjoyment in this one over the next decade." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A new offering, the 2001 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard (14% alcohol) possesses an evolved nose of sweet blackberry liqueur intermixed with spice and sweet oak. Surprisingly, the palate is closed, and the finish hard and tannic. While this effort does not appear to have the potential of its siblings, there is still a lot to it. Perhaps I caught it on a closed day.
