2013 Spellbound California Petite Sirah

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The real star, and a sleeper selection for sure, is the outstanding 2013 Petite Sirah. This wine has an inky, ruby/purple color, notes of cassis, blueberry, blackberry fruit, incense and camphor. This is a medium to full-bodied beauty to drink over the next 5-6 years, possibly longer. These are excellent wines once again as this winery has appeared frequently in these Best Buy pages. (RP)" (8/2015)

2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah (Previously $30)

From the winery: "Rich and dense, the 2013 Brunswick Petite Sirah is a beautiful expression of a world class vineyard. Aromatics of fresh black cherries, blueberry cobbler, and dark chocolate, the wine hits the palate with a rush of accompanying flavors. The wine crosses the mid palate and fills the mouth with balanced acid and tannins to match the wines' density. Enjoy with grilled anything, or on a cool autumn evening on the patio. Pack a toothbrush!"

2014 Carlisle "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I’ll just briefly summarize the 2014s. It was the earliest vintage ever for Mike Officer and probably he’ll beat that early harvest record in 2015. In this case, he was finished by October 6, which was a first, and it will be interesting to see if he eclipses that in 2015, which was looking even earlier. The production levels were relatively abundant for Mike Officer and the wines fruit-forward, although softer and less reserved than some of the 2013s. While not quite as opaque in color, they are loaded with fruit, supple and luscious. The only white win ...Read More »

2013 J. Runquist "Salman Vineyard" Clarksburg Petite Sirah

According to the winery: "The 2013 vintage has a deep purple color that clings to the walls of the glass. Bright aromas of sweet ripe dark fruits; marionberry and boysenberry marry with a bouquet of mocha and hazelnut to create an alluring temptation. The flavors are juicy and succulent with loads of black currant and toasted oak. The mature fully integrated tannins express themselves as a rich viscous texture that leads to a lingering finish that seems to go on forever. While the tannins are in check, a few years in the cellar will add an additional dim... Read More »

2013 Robert Biale "Royal Punishers" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another classic from Robert Biale is the 2013 Royal Punishers. This wine, which emerges from a vineyard in Rutherford, has a black/purple color, stunning, almost off-the-charts richness, and a killer finish of nearly a minute. It was aged in 30% new French oak for 17 months prior to bottling. It is an amazing wine that tips the scales at 14.9% alcohol, which is not all that high for a Biale wine, as both the E.B.A. and Like Father Like Son hit 15.5%. This wine should drink well for 10-15 years. (RP)" (12/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "*Highly Recommended* Ripe, plush and juicy not ...Read More »

2014 J. Runquist "Salman Vineyard" Clarksburg Petite Sirah

Jeff Runquist banked 19 years making wine in California before opening his own winery. During that time, he developed close relationships with growers and is now able to source first-rate fruit for his own wines. Petite Sirah is the best selling varietal for Jeff Runquist Wines, who is based out of Amador County. This Salman Vineyard bottling hails from the Clarksburg AVA on the delta of the Sacramento River where it benefits from cool breezes from the San Francisco Bay. Although there are many quality vine plantings in Clarksburg, grapes are almost alwa... Read More »

2013 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino County Petite Sirah

Bolinas-based Sean Thackrey has made a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch since 1997, and are we glad he has! This is a wine to put away in your cellar (or closet) for however long you can stand it! When you do get around to opening it, watch it explode from the glass and change over the hour or two it takes for you two drink the bottle, offering such an array of aromas and flavors it is impossible to catalog them here. 2003 Rosenblum "Rockpile Road Vineyard" Dry Creek Valley Petite Sirah

This very rich and extracted Petite Sirah shows ripe brambly blackberries, violets and vanilla in the bouquet. The flavors are dark chocolate, currants, and creamy blackberries. A very long aftertaste of cocoa and currants is evident. This is not just Petite Sirah, but an experience. The grapes for this very rich and exotic Petite Sirah come from a steep hillside vineyard located nearly 1,200 feet above Lake Sonoma in Northern Dry Creek Valley. It is planted to a 90-year-old clone of Petite Sirah, which likes the elevation, soil, and climate of this hill... Read More »

2009 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

"Sirius" is right, as in, this is some SERIOUSLY GOOD Petite Sirah. Sourced from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Mendocino, the 2009 "Sirius" Petite Sirah from this eccentric Bolinas winemaker offers an intense nose of red and black cherry, along with hints of sage, oregano, and explosion of exotic herbs and spices. It is concentrated and full-bodied, but maintains a fine tension between richness, acidity, and tannic power. Oak is not a dominant factor here; this wine is all about complex aromas and the varietal's naturally rich texture. Minerals and tannins gri... Read More »

2013 Chronic "Suite Petite" California Petite Sirah-Syrah

Connoisseurs Guide: "*Good Value* While at first a bit stark and unfruity with elements of pepper and earth well in advance of an underplayed note of ripe berries, this slightly rounded, medium-full-bodied working finds more fruit as it goes and comes into decent varietal focus. It is moderately tannic, but it is not particularly big by Petite Sirah standards and it will benefit from a few years of age." (3/2016)

2013 Joseph Swan "Bastoni Vineyard" Russian River Valley Petite Sirah

From the producer: "This wine is as dark as our tannat, which is saying a lot! Deep, deep red. Although the nose is not fully developed as of yet, it is about black plum and, even though it was aged in neutral French oak barrels, a hint of wood. In the mouth it’s power is obvious but at the same time it exhibits balance and even a bit of elegance. Sort of like a middle linebacker doing ballet. It is a bit juicy but with a tannic edge and great acidity. Knowing what I do about how many petite sirahs tend to age, we plan to put several cases in the librar... Read More »

2013 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

Its inky purple color is followed by lots of black and blue fruits, violet, pepper, graphite and hints of underbrush on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, supple, pure and polished, it's a beautifully civilized, if not elegant, expression of Petite Sirah that will have 10-15 years of longevity. Extremely tannic, full-bodied, and massive, with excruciating levels of extract, this 2001 needs 5-8 years of cellaring; it should keep for two decades or more." (8/2003) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-purple to the rim. Explosive aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, minerals and roasted coffee. 2002 Turley "Hayne" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard (400 cases) represents the essence of this varietal. It is an intriguing, provocative effort boasting an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of graphite intermixed with melted licorice, espresso, chocolate, blackberries, blueberries, and concentrated creme de cassis. 2013 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Not yet bottled, the 2013 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard could possibly rival the near-perfection of the 2013 Pesenti Petite Syrah. Blueberry, blackberry, acacia flowers and almost gravelly alluvial notes jump from the glass of this full-bodied, massive, concentrated wine. The tannins are very high, but they are sweet and well-integrated. This should turn out to be a prodigious Petite Syrah to begin drinking in about 10-15 years and cellar for children and grandchildren over the following 30-50 or more years. 1997 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard (from 80-year old vines) assaults the palate with such an overload of fruit, tannin, and extract that the taster's first impression is that this is something more than table wine. It is a massive, almost uncivilized, wildly out of control Petite Syrah that will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and last for 30 or more. I have been conservative in my judgment because the tannin nearly melted the fillings in my teeth, but this is an amazing, astonishing wine that will be fascinating to follow over the next 3-4 decades. Extraordinarily concentrated, superripe, essence-of-berry flavors border on painful today. This has really uncanny intensity. The explosive fruit blows past the substantial tannins on the finish. Wow! (ST)" (6/2001) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Amazing is the 1999 Petite-Syrah Rattlesnake Acres (225 cases, 14.8% alcohol).
