2015 Guenoc California Petite Sirah

While it may seem an unusual varietal for such an everyday-priced wine, Guenoc's Petite Sirah has long been a go-to wine for California wine shoppers looking for something reliable and red. The 2015 Guenoc California Petite Sirah is a rich, almost midnight red in the glass. Aromas of blackberry compote and clove rise from the glass while the palate is a dark, brooding mix of minced meat, marzipan, dark chocolate and blackberry fruit. Easy to drink, filled with richly textured flavors, this wine is ideal with slow-cooked red meats.

2015 Ridge Vineyards "Lytton Estate" Dry Creek Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is all class. There is plenty of depth to the inky blue and purplish Petite fruit, while the tannins are remarkably polished for a young Dry Creek Petite. Hints of lavender, tobacco, mint, smoke and crème de cassis develop in the glass, adding further shades of complexity. This clay-rich site seems to be especially well suited to Petite. Whole berry fermentation and gentle extractions yield and especially refined Petite. The 2015 is another drop-dead gorgeous wine from Ridge. 2014 Stags' Leap Winery Napa Valley Petite Sirah

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Sirah, which is their basic introductory model, so to speak, is a sensational wine in its own right. Opaque purple-colored, loads of white flowers, blueberries and blackberries are present in this wine, which should drink well for 20-25 years A winery often confused with the Stags Leap Wine Cellars, but owned by the giant Treasuries Wines consortium, they are doing some creative work and making extremely interesting wines. 91+ Points (RP)" (12/2016)

2015 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "While I love the Syrah from Paul, I’m not sure his Petite Sirah isn’t his best wine. The 2015 Petite Sirah Tierra is another total hottie that offers fabulous notes of plums, exotic flowers, incense, pepper and peach in a full-bodied, seamless package. It has no hard edges, fine, fine tannin, building structure and a great finish, all while holding on to a terrific sense of elegance. It’s already drinking brilliantly, yet my money is on it keeping for at least a decade or more if well stored. 2005 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard is impeccable. Beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit infused with charcoal and licorice aromas jump from the glass of this opaque purple-colored effort. Full-bodied and stunningly rich with sweet tannin and good acidity, it should evolve easily for two decades. (RP)" (12/2006) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red color. Reduced black fruit aromas complicated by exotic dried fruits and orange peel, along with a faintly feral quality. 2015 Bedrock "Drummond's Cuvée" California Petite Sirah

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A barrel sample of the 2015 Petite Sirah Drummond’s Cuvée comes primarily from Mendocino’s Eaglepoint Ranch, which used to make up Sean Thackrey’s Sirius Syrah. This massive, rich, concentrated Petite Sirah is a 50-year wine. Black as a moonless night, it displays notes of graphite, incense, camphor, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. It is still in barrel, but it’s a monster. More on this once it’s in bottle next year. 2006 Carver Sutro "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Carver-Sutro's 2006 Petite Sirah Palisade Vineyard is extraordinarily tannic and backward, making it difficult to fully evaluate. It possesses a dense purple color, but the 2006 does not appear to have the intensity of fruit, mid-palate, or length of the estate's other efforts. Time will tell, but it may be 3-4 years until we know for sure." (2/2010) Vinous: "Denis Sutro left a successful career as a First Amendment trial lawyer to focus on wine. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential. 2002 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard (400 cases) represents the essence of this varietal. It is an intriguing, provocative effort boasting an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of graphite intermixed with melted licorice, espresso, chocolate, blackberries, blueberries, and concentrated creme de cassis. Pepper and flower-like aromas are also present, but no oak is noticeable in this massively extracted, phenomenally rich, shockingly well-balanced Petite Syrah. He also bottles wines under his own label, like this vibrant Petite. Everything about it is bright, especially the color, a dense purple with electric ruby edges. 1997 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard (from 80-year old vines) assaults the palate with such an overload of fruit, tannin, and extract that the taster's first impression is that this is something more than table wine. It is a massive, almost uncivilized, wildly out of control Petite Syrah that will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and last for 30 or more. The wine's notes suggested I needed to return to my hotel to grab my floss after tasting this wine. The color is a saturated, thick black/purple. The wine reveals surprising amounts of toasty new oak in the nose (Turley only uses 25%-30% new oak). In the mouth, it is "beyond immense, massive, and gargantuan," and should be purchased only by those seeking an adventurous wine experience. My favorites include the Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard, followed by the Pesenti Vineyard, which shows more chalky graphite characteristics. 2013 Carlisle "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

92-95 points Vinous: "The 2013 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard, from one of the best Petite sites in Napa Valley, races from the glass with a huge core of dark fruit, smoke, game, tobacco, spices and savory herbs. Mike Officer gave the 2013 35 days on the skins to help soften the formidable tannins that are such a signature of this site. A rich, explosive finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. 2010 Carlisle "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Glass-staining purple. Smoky, deeply pitched scents of candied black and blue fruits, cracked pepper and olive; smells a lot like a wine from the northern Rhone. Stains the palate with densely packed blueberry and bitter cherry flavors, with a spicy nuance adding lift. Finishes peppery and very long, with resonating florality and slow-mounting tannins. This wine was raised in 50% new French oak but I don't detect its influence. (ST)" (5/2012)

2012 Sine Qua Non "The Writing On The Wall" Central Coast Petite Sirah (1.5L)

97-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Petite Sirah The Writing on the Wall should be the greatest Petite Sirah to ever come out of California (or the world?). Made from 94% Petite Sirah and 6% Viognier and aged in 80% old hogsheads and 20% in new French oak, it’s bottled only in magnum and will be sold along with the new Sine Qua Non label art book. A massive, full-bodied effort that offers incredible depth and richness without ever seeming heavy or cumbersome, it offers up blockbuster-styled aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, crushed rocks, beef blood and licorice. It should ...Read More »
