2008 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

95 points Vinous: "Mocha, espresso, rosemary, lavender, plums and licorice emerge from the 2008 Opus One. Tasted from magnum, the 2008 is beautifully expressive. The firm tannins need more time to soften, but there is a lot to like in the 2008. Today the 2008 is showing beautifully. In magnum, the 2008 can be enjoyed today or cellared up to another 20 years or so. If opened young, the 2008 needs a few hours of air to soften. The bright, floral, spiced finish suggests a long life ahead. (AG)" (11/2013) 94 points James Suckling: "Fabulous roses, currants and dark berries on the nose that go to currants ...Read More »

2008 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

97 points Vinous: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia is a towering, statuesque wine bursting with blackberry jam, tar, spices, leather and licorice. It shows fabulous depth and richness backed up by serious, imposing tannins that suggest it has a long life. Ideally, the 2008 should be purchased by those who can be patient; it is not a wine for those seeking immediate gratification. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. 2008 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain takes things to another level, as hard as it may seem to believe. This was another difficult vintage for Dunn. Yields were down a full 50%. In exchange, nature rewarded Dunn with the fruit to make an epic wine that could very well turn out to be a modern-day legend. The 2008 is a huge, towering wine packed with dark fruit, licorice, tar, asphalt and licorice. Layers of perfume are woven throughout this majestic effort. The 2008 should only be purchased by the very patient, but it is a legendary wine in the maki ...Read More »

2008 Scarecrow "M. Étain" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The inaugural vintage of Scarecrow's "second label" wine, M. Étain comes from a less rigorous selection of fruit hand-picked from the J.J. Cohn Estate in Rutherford. The wine is cleverly named after the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, "Étain" being French for "Tin." Pretty cherry, raspberry and plum fruit notes on the nose and palate are deftly interwoven with cookie spices, cigar box, coffee, licorice, chocolate and vanilla bean. Silky tannins make this approachable now.

2008 Cain "Concept" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

Jancis Robinson: "Quite a departure from the fruit-centric Napa norm. Roasted coffee, a tiny bit of herbal character. Savoury and structural. Good restraint within an extrovert idiom. (RH)" (2/2013) Wine Spectator: "Shows a meaty, peppery side of Cabernet, rich and extracted, offering dried dark berry and fresh-turned earth. A solid effort with chewy, leathery tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. (JL)" (11/2012) K&L Notes: Cain "Concept" is vinified exactly like their signature bottling, Cain "Five". 2008 Rubicon Estate "Cask" Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "An exceptionally good wine, right up there with the fantastic 2007 Cask. Classic Rutherford Cabernet, dry, softly tannic and delicious, with herb-infused blackberry and cherry fruit. Definitively not in the modern style of fat overripeness, but balanced and elegant. Shows all the hallmarks of an ageable wine, but you can drink it now. It gets better and better as it breathes in the glass." 2008 Nickel & Nickel "Martin Stelling" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Martin Stelling Vineyard is another of the darker, more brooding wines in this lineup. Tar, smoke, licorice plums and blackberries are some of the notes that emerge from this powerful, inward Cabernet. It shows fabulous balance all the way through to the pure, tannic finish. The wine’s purity and sheer classiness place it among the very finest wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. 2008 Robert Mondavi "Vine Hill Ranch" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

The Vine Hill Ranch is one of the great bench land vineyards in the Oakville AVA. This terroir- driven wine shows the power, elegance and complexity from this unique vineyard. 2008 Laird Family Estate "Mast Ranch" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

It shows terrific, concentrated flavors of blackberry, cherry, currant and dark chocolate that are rich and satisfying. It's soft enough to drink now, but will benefit from 6-8 years in the cellar." (8/2012) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Fresh, floral, ripe plum and berry aromas are supple and fleshy, full-bodied and expansive, folding in ripe cherry, mineral and anise flavors, with a dash of leather. 93 points Connoisseurs Guide: "*Two Stars!* There is no big burst of fruit or towering wave of sweet oak to make this one an immediate turner of heads, but there is a real sense of sophistication at work here with plenty of depth and layering right from the start. The wine is at once both slightly supple and fairly firm in feel, and its vitality is hard to ignore. It’s soft, lush and opulent in blackberry, cherry, blueberry, cassis, dark chocolate and smoky oak flavors. Although it was aged in 100% new French oak, the oak isn’t at all heavy. Rather, it’s perfect, adding just the right touch of smoke. Really fabulous, and the tannins define Stags Leap, so strong yet sweetly refined. 2008 Casa Piena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Slightly better (which is no surprise, since it appears to be an impressive work in progress) is the 2008 Casa Piena. Production in this vintage is slightly higher as well. This wine displays similar character, with more unsmoked cigar tobacco intermixed with creme de cassis, camphor, graphite, and some subtle earthiness. Opaque ruby/purple, medium to full-bodied, layered, and opulent, this is a beauty as well, but slightly richer and potentially more complex than the brilliant 2007. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More European in style than some of its siblings, the 2008 exhibits good acidity, more noticeable tannin (but it is extremely young), and plenty of crushed rock, espresso roast and licorice characteristics intermixed with a volcanic minerality. Full-bodied, ripe and opulent, with a closed, formidable personality, it should be at its apogee between 2018 and 2035. 96+ (RP)" (6/2012) 96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full red-ruby. (6/2011) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. 95 points Connoisseurs Guide: "There are times, and this is clearly one of them, when measuring a wine by its label-stated alcohol level is an exercise in self denial. Better that one should measure this one by its gorgeous, focused, deep and balanced character because this is a refined, complex effort with layers and layers of on-point attractions.
