2008 Cain "Concept" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

Jancis Robinson: "Quite a departure from the fruit-centric Napa norm. Roasted coffee, a tiny bit of herbal character. Savoury and structural. Good restraint within an extrovert idiom. (RH)" (2/2013) Wine Spectator: "Shows a meaty, peppery side of Cabernet, rich and extracted, offering dried dark berry and fresh-turned earth. A solid effort with chewy, leathery tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. (JL)" (11/2012) K&L Notes: Cain "Concept" is vinified exactly like their signature bottling, Cain "Five". It is sourced from the eastern and western "b... Read More »

2008 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

97 points Vinous: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia is a towering, statuesque wine bursting with blackberry jam, tar, spices, leather and licorice. It shows fabulous depth and richness backed up by serious, imposing tannins that suggest it has a long life. Ideally, the 2008 should be purchased by those who can be patient; it is not a wine for those seeking immediate gratification. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. (AG)" (12/2011) 95 points Connoisseurs Guide: "*3 Stars* Once again, Insignia takes it accustomed place near the very head of the class, and, as usual, it i ...Read More »

2008 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

98 points James Suckling: "I am speechless. I love the pure aromas of currants, blackberries, minerals and mint -- eucalyptus too. Full body yet so refined and beautiful. Subtle complexity. Great length. Give it two or three years to come together, but hard to hold back." (6/2011) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right ...Read More »

2008 Meteor Vineyard "Perseid" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Finessed, supple tannins frame layers of dark red fruit, spices, tobacco, flowers, leather and licorice that emerge in this impeccably polished, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2008 Perseid should continue to drink well over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. (AG)" (12/2011) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good red-ruby. 2008 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain takes things to another level, as hard as it may seem to believe. This was another difficult vintage for Dunn. Yields were down a full 50%. In exchange, nature rewarded Dunn with the fruit to make an epic wine that could very well turn out to be a modern-day legend. The 2008 is a huge, towering wine packed with dark fruit, licorice, tar, asphalt and licorice. Layers of perfume are woven throughout this majestic effort. 2008 Scarecrow "M. Étain" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The inaugural vintage of Scarecrow's "second label" wine, M. Étain comes from a less rigorous selection of fruit hand-picked from the J.J. Cohn Estate in Rutherford. The wine is cleverly named after the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, "Étain" being French for "Tin." Pretty cherry, raspberry and plum fruit notes on the nose and palate are deftly interwoven with cookie spices, cigar box, coffee, licorice, chocolate and vanilla bean. Silky tannins make this approachable now.

2008 Casa Piena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Slightly better (which is no surprise, since it appears to be an impressive work in progress) is the 2008 Casa Piena. Production in this vintage is slightly higher as well. This wine displays similar character, with more unsmoked cigar tobacco intermixed with creme de cassis, camphor, graphite, and some subtle earthiness. Opaque ruby/purple, medium to full-bodied, layered, and opulent, this is a beauty as well, but slightly richer and potentially more complex than the brilliant 2007. There is lovely purity and finesse to be found in this generous, inviting wine. The firm 2008 tannin that marks so many wines in this vintage is nowhere to be found. I suppose there is no substitute for working many of the best vineyards in Napa Valley. This is a terrific showing. 2008 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Juicy, vibrant and intense; less dense than the 2007 but more perfumed in the mid-palate. Very fine-grained wine, finishing long and aromatic, with firm tannic bite and a late note of bitter chocolate. 'Two thousand eight was an impossible year to make 15% wines with a 4.0 pH in Napa Valley,' said Bo Barrett, adding that 'it's more fun to be working in the classical world. Obviously, the more structured wines with more density and aging potential were chosen for this cuvee. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Abreu "Thorevilos" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - (96-98RP)) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As outstanding as all the Abreu wines are, if I had to choose one that stands apart from the others it would be Thorevilos. The 2008 Thorevilos is the most complete and deeply satisfying of Abreu’s 2008s because the balance of fruit and structure is so impeccable. The 2008 literally explodes onto the palate with masses of dark fruit, tar, licorice and smoke. There is a fleshiness and depth of the fruit here that separates the Thorevilos from the other 2008s. Layers of fruit build towards the massive, masculine finish. In 2008 Thorevilos is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 15% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. (AG)" (12/2011)

2008 Fantesca "La Petite Soeur" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

Originally a historic 19th century vineyard with ties to Charles Krug, the property's viticulture didn't survive Phylloxera and Prohibition, being reclaimed by the surrounding forest for more than 70 years. After the vineyard was finally replanted in 1997 and the new estate erected, winemaker Heidi Barret came on board to craft the estate's wines. La Petite Soeur is their Bordeaux blend which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Verdot.

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Entre Deux Meres wraps around the palate with serious depth and power. Plums, mocha, espresso and spices all jump from the glass in this sexy, voluptuous wine. Round, sweet and inviting, the 2008 Entre Deux Meres captures the best qualities of the year. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another candidate for perfection, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky comes from Clone 4, Clone 6 and Clone 337 although Clone 6 dominates the blend. Also a monumental wine, it is not as nuanced as the CCS or the RBS, but it possesses serious minerality as well as huge notes of tobacco leaf, pain grille, spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and licorice in both the aromatic and flavor profiles. The finish is endless in this super-intense, rich wine. Like all these wines, it is a 25- to 40-year effort although the sweetness of the tannin and the ...Read More »
