2014 Melville "Estate" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah Top Pick!
2014 Melville "Estate" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I always love the two blockbuster Syrahs from this estate, both of which need to be sought out by readers. Tons of black olive, smoked and salted meats, as well as ripe dark fruits all emerge from the incredibly polished, elegant and layered 2014 Syrah Estate, which is just an off the hook value. Inky colored, layered, yet graceful and light on its feet, with gorgeous fruit, drink this beauty over the coming 4-5 years, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for longer. 2014 Halcón "Alturas" Yorkville Highlands Syrah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Harvested on September 19th, which is the earliest harvest to date, the 2014 Syrah Alturas includes a small amount of cofermented Viognier and spent time in 20% new oak. It offers a sensational bouquet of black raspberries, caramelized black cherries, bouquet garni, smoked duck and chalky minerality. This gives way to a rich, full-bodied Syrah that has beautiful fruit, polished tannin and a seamless elegance that keeps you coming back to the glass. Hats off to winemaker Paul Gordon, this is easily the finest Syrah I've tasted from him. I continue to love ...Read More »

Purple flowers rule the palate, with lavender, violet and blossoming rosemary notes, with thyme and white pepper spicing up boysenberry fruit. 2008 Martinelli "Hop Camp Vineyard-Gravel Lens" Russian River Valley Syrah (Previously $65)

92 points Rhone Report: "The 2008 Martinelli Syrah Hop Camp Vineyard "Gravel Lens" (Grave lens refers to the rare soil characteristic of alluvial soil layers interleaved with layers of gravel) is a big, beautifully fruited Syrah that possess touches of northern Rhone like qualities mainly on the nose. 2013 Copain "Tous Ensemble" Mendocino County Syrah

90 points Vinous: "The 2013 Syrah Tous Ensemble is fabulous. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, smoke, licorice, grilled herbs jump from the glass. A dollop of whole clusters adds gorgeous aromatic/savory overtones. Drink this juicy, lifted Syrah over the next few years. This is a terrific showing from Copain, not to mention a tremendous value. Graphite, smoke, black cherry, plum and menthol are all pushed forward in this tasty, richly textured Syrah from Stolpman. 2013 Copain "Les Voisins" Yorkville Highlands Syrah

Wine & Spirits: "From a collection of vineyards in Anderson Valley’s cool Deep End, this is tight at first, with flinty earth tones and tart chokecherry acidity, the oak feeling a bit raw. With air, the fruit gains some suppleness, and it may turn out to be a layered, complex wine with some additional time in bottle." (4/2016) K&L Notes: Praise from Wine Advocate: "Paul Gordon and winemaker Scott Shapley (who also makes the wines for Roar in the Santa Lucia Highlands) continue to make superb, Northern Rhone-inspired wines from the Mendocino and Yorkville Highlands regions of Californ... 2013 Beckmen "Estate Purisima Mountain" Ballard Canyon Syrah

94 points Vinous: "The 2013 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard boasts tremendous tension and explosive energy. Underlying veins of tannin and acidity, along with a drop of Viognier, give the 2013 much of its freshness. A rush of dark plums, black cherries, mocha, violets, cloves and licorice add nuance on the huge finish. This is a fabulous wine from Steve Beckmen. Steve Beckmen excels with deep, powerful wines. It's gives up tons of classic Cali Syrah notes of brambly blackberries, plums, licorice, violets and pepper herbs to go with a medium to full-bodied, plump, pure and straight-up delicious style on the palate. Qupé owner Bob Lindquist has been working in the Central Coast vineyards since 1975, while the winemaking trade in the area was still in its infancy. He worked for Jim Clendenen (who would later found Au Bon Climat) at Zaca Mesa Winery and founded Qupé in 1982. Aged 22 months in two-thirds new French oak, it trumps most estates grand vin. Showing the forward, plush, sweetly fruited style of all of the 2013s here, with notes of smoked meats, violets, caramelized black cherries and cassis, with its oak component pushed all the way into the background, drink this full-bodied, pure, seamless Syrah through 2023. This dense, full-bodied, superb Syrah possesses considerable structure and tannin. (RP)" (12/2005) 92-94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby-red. Tar, smoke, licorice and black fruit flow through to the huge, voluptuous finish. Stylistically, the Frei Road is quite different from the other Syrahs in the range, much of which can be attributed to the farming, which is done by the Martinelli family. 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The soft, supple, velvety-textured 2005 Syrah reveals notes of blackberries, bacon fat, camphor, pepper, and black olives. (RP)" (12/2007) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Knockout Cote-Rotie-like nose offers raspberry, brown spices, white pepper and smoked meat. The seamless palate boasts terrific intensity of dark berry, pepper and spice flavors and wonderfully suave tannins. A wine of exhilarating fruit and cut-an outstanding mountaintop Syrah. (ST)" (6/2008) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Distinct for its wide range of flavors, with a mix of earthy mineral, pebble, leather and beefy, peppery berry ...Read More »

2005 Dehlinger "Estate" Russian River Valley Syrah

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tom Dehlinger is “consistently consistent,” and his wines are always a delight to taste. When you combine that with fair pricing and remarkable humility, this estate merits (and receives) strong support from wine consumers. Dehlinger’s 2007 Pinot Noirs may be the finest he has produced since the mid-nineties (his 1994s are still holding on to life). In his quiet manner, Tom Dehlinger continues to turn out very fine Syrahs, and deserves credit for being one of the pioneers with Rhone Ranger varietals. (RP)" (12/2010) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky ruby color. Powerfully scented bouq ...Read More »

2005 Pax "Kobler Family" Russian River Valley Syrah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard, which is a cool Russian River site, tips the scales at only 12.6% alcohol, but it has incredible phenolic maturity because of the long, cool growing season at this site. Notes of bacon fat, violets, blackberry, and cassis as well as licorice and some exotic apricots make an impression in this inky/purple wine of great intensity, fabulous texture, and stunning purity. The exotic influence comes from the 10% Viognier co-fermented with the Syrah. This is a tour de force in winemaking, and should age brilliantly for 10- ...Read More »

2012 Ojai "Roll Ranch" Syrah

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Riper, fleshier, and more hedonistic than the '11 (but not as much as the differences in the vintage would have you believe), the 2012 Syrah Roll Ranch is a beautiful wine that's loaded with notions of sweet cassis, blackberries, chocolate, mulled spice and underbrush. Ripe, sexy and opulent, with no hard edges and a great finish, it's about as voluptuous and textured as Adam's wines get today. In addition, the purity and polish to the fruit and tannin are exceptional. These traits are present in almost all of the new releases from Adam and Fabien, and w ...Read More »

2002 Ojai "Melville" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky/blue/purple-colored 2002 Syrah Melville Vineyards boasts a stunning perfume of crushed rocks, white flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, a viscous texture, good underlying acidity that provides vibrance as well as delineation, and a spectacularly rich, multidimensional mid-palate and finish... One cannot say enough about the commitment to excellence exhibited year after year by Adam Tolmach. (RP)" (8/2004) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Enticing aromas of wild berry, boysenberry, spice and hazelnut lead to a firm, intense, richly concentrated young wine that should only r ...Read More »
