2015 Fratelli Barale Langhe Nebbiolo

These grapes come from a vineyard planted in 1975 in the commune of Monforte d'Alba, fermented in 50hl wooden casks for 10 days and then aged in 15-30hl French oak barrels for one year. The wine is a classic Old World style Nebbiolo, very light in color but exceptionally well adapted for meals — foods with a more woodsy (mushroom or truffle) character, or poultry.

In his younger years, in 1897, he purchased the San Giacomo cascina in Dogliani with 40 “days” of vineyard. Today, the estate counts 52 hectares of vineyards (mostly in Dogliani) including seven hectares in Barolo and three in Barbaresco."

Guido Rivella's Nebbiolo d'Alba is grown partly in Montestefano and partly in Patricone (near Cole) and it is made from 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Barbera. The grapes are separately fermented in stainless steel for 14-18 days and then aged in wood for 6-12 months. 2013 Rivella "Montestefano" Barbaresco (Previously $75)

Guido Rivella had a multi-decade career as the winemaker for Angelo Gaja. Now retired, he and his daughter have a tiny estate in Barbaresco. This production of only three barrels comes from grapes harvested from 0.37 hectares of calcareous clay soil with a southern exposure. Fermentation and maceration occur in stainless steel tanks for 22-25 days at a controlled temperature. The wine is aged in wood for 14-18 months, then again in bottles for a few months before commercial release.
