1997 Potensac, Médoc Top Pick!
1997 Potensac, Médoc

Jancis Robinson: "Dark glowing crimson. Grunty, very concentrated. Arguably the miracle here is to find a wine from Jean-Hubert Delon under £20. And one you could actually think of drinking too. This should certainly appeal to classicists—especially those knowledgeable enough to know it’s related to the most expensive super second of all, Léoville Las Cases." (9/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A soft, cedary, herbaceous, but pleasant, round, elegant style of wine, with berry and red currant fruit, and a smooth finish... (R)=P)" (4/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good ruby-red. Smoky aromas of plum and leather. Lush, smooth and ...Read More »

Jancis Robinson: "From a 41-ha vineyard planted on high-lying gravel croupes. Vineyards are densely planted with 6,000 vines/ha and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Vines are on average 35 years old and the grapes were hand-harvested. One-third new French oak was used in maturation. Capbern Gasqueton has belonged to the Gasqueton family for 10 generations. They also own Calon-Ségur and this wine was made by the talented Calon-Ségur cellar team. 2010 St Paul, Haut-Medoc

90-91 points James Suckling: "I really like the polished tannins with mineral, berry and violet character. Full and round. Beautiful. This is next to Sociando Mallet." (4/2011) Wine Spectator: "Has the ripeness of the vintage, with a dark core of plum and cassis guided by solid, well-integrated tannins that let black licorice and Black Forest cake notes play out on the finish. (Web-2013)" K&L Notes: This rich and layered Cru Bourgeois offers generous aromas of vanilla and dark fruit, which follow through to the palate along with a powerful dose of structure. 1991 Labégorce, Margaux

Purchased direct from the property and a personal favorite of K&L founder Clyde Beffa, Labegorce appeals to those with a preference for "old school" Bordeaux: structured, earthy, meaty, and rustic, with dark fruits and classic Margaux minerality. Time in bottle brings out additional complexity, as the tannins soften as secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors of dried fruits, tobacco, wood, and leather emerge. With 20+ years of age, this wine is mature and ready to drink tonight. Open and enjoy with food...steak, preferably!

2012 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves Top Pick!
2012 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost 8 weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was pr... Read More »

Lovely texture. 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot and 15 percent Petit Verdot. This property is really on a roll now, delivering racy and structured reds; it gives much more freshness and character to the wine. 2010 Côtes de Saint Clair, Puisseguin-St-Émilion

Pro tip: When looking for a great value wine, try the appellation next door to the heavy hitters. You often get similar growing conditions and fruit for a fraction of the price. Puisseguin-St-Émilion is a small appellation on the right bank of the Dordogne, just northeast of St-Émilion. Also dominated by Merlot, these wines are superb everyday drinkers, just screaming to be uncorked next to a juicy burger.

It has an inky purple color and a stunning nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as touches of incense and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and stunningly concentrated, this 2012 is a great success in the vintage, one of the superstars. This is another sensational effort from the Cathiards that is perfectly balanced, complex, super-rich and pure. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. Acidity and firm tannins offer structure to what is a spicy, fruity wine, dominated by fresh black plum and prune flavors." (2/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very tight, delivering espresso, iron and kirsch notes wound up at the core, covered for now with bay leaf, tar and roasted mesquite flavors. The long finish has nicely buried racy acidity. This is more lean muscle than overt power, and should age nicely. Best from 2013 through 2021." (4/2012) Jancis Robinson: "Oddly aromatic! Perhaps just a tiny tad o ...Read More »

2001 Clos du Marquis, St-Julien

92 points Wine Spectator: "Very perfumed with blackberries, currants and vanilla. Full bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. This is tight and racy. Very fine. Best after 2008." (3/2004) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Clos du Marquis tastes like a classified growth Bordeaux. Deep ruby/purple-colored, it is more open-knit and forward than its bigger sibling, exhibiting lovely cassis fruit intermixed with underbrush, earth, and subtle background oak. Enjoy this approachable 2001 over the next 10-14 years." (6/2004) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good ruby-red color. Currant, tobacco, minerals, graphite and sexy oak on the nose. 2014 Capbern St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival) Top Pick!
2014 Capbern St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

90-93 points Wine Spectator: "Pure and direct, with a textbook beam of cassis and bitter cherry notes, laced with lilac and iron hints. The racy, unencumbered finish lets the mineral edge shine. Lots of improvement here recently. This may be the best value play in the vintage." (4/2015) 90-92 points Vinous: "A delicious, mouth filling St. Estèphe, the 2014 Capbern captures the personality of the year in the northern Médoc in spades. Hints of smoke, tobacco, licorice, mocha and earthiness wrap around a core of dark fruit in an exuberant wine loaded with pure textural richness. The 2014 finishes with notable ...Read More »

2005 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe Top Pick!
2005 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe

99 points James Suckling: "The purity of fruit in this is fascinating with plums, currants and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time. Still needs a year or two but gorgeous to drink already." (10/2015) 98 points Wine Spectator: "*Collectibles and Top 100 Wines of 2008* Black in color, with aromas of orange peel, new leather, currant, berry and Christmas pudding. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish of fruit and s ...Read More »

2010 Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright red-ruby. Pungent, expressive nose offers black raspberry, blueberry, bitter chocolate, leather and flowers. Densely packed, juicy and sweet, with excellent inner-mouth energy to the black raspberry and mineral flavors complicated by sexy smoky oak. Lovely ripeness and vinosity here. Finishes with substantial firm tannins that will support a couple decades of graceful evolution in bottle. Like some past outstanding vintages of Sociando-Mallet, this will make a great ringer in future tastings with classified growers from the northern Medo ...Read More »
