1982 Suduiraut, Sauternes

4 stars Michael Broadbent (Nov 1992): "Roasted grapes picked exceptionally early, 16 September. Alcohol 14%. First tasted in 1988: sweet, hefty; minty, spicy; good length and acidity. More recently: waxy yellow; rich bouquet; very sweet, full-bodied. Showing well." This wine is actually better than the heralded 1983 vintage because Suduiraut makes better wines when they pick early in the season.

2005 La Tour Blanche, Sauternes

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Extravagantly rich, this is dense and supersweet initially, just balanced with acidity. The botrytis dryness is really not here at this stage, but with its elegant creamy texture, wood flavors still very present. This is still at the very beginning of its development." (6/2004) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "*no tasting note given*" (4/2008) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Subtle aromas of honey, lemon peel, cream, vanilla and apple pie follow through to a thick palate, with lots of sweetness. There's also loads of clove and other spices. Not as exciting as from barrel, but still outstanding. Best after 2011." 2003 La Tour Blanche, Sauternes

97 points Wine Spectator: "*Highly Recommended* Dark gold in color already, with intense aromas of dried apricots, citrus, honey and maple syrup with lots of spice. Full-bodied, with lovely sweetness and a long, creamy peach tart, tobacco, honey aftertaste. This is pure botrytis. Best ever from here. Has an incredible finish." (3/2006) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Enticing bright yellow-gold color. Subdued but very pure aromas of orange peel, apricot, honey and spices. Supersweet, fat and spicy; wonderfully round, chewy and unctuous. As thick and '03-like as this is, it remains fresh and lively. Not the last wo ...Read More »

1989 d'Yquem, Sauternes (Previously $600) Top Pick!
1989 d'Yquem, Sauternes (Previously $600)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The favorite sweet wine of millionaires, Chateau d'Yquem has, not unexpectedly, turned in a brilliant effort with their newly released 1989. It is a large-scaled, massively rich, unctuously-textured wine that should evolve effortlessly for a half century or more. It does not reveal the compelling finesse and complexity of the 1988 or 1986, but it is a far heavier, richer wine than either of those vintages. It is reminiscent of the 1976, with additional fat and glycerin. The wine is extremely alcoholic and rich, with a huge nose of smoky, honey-covered co ...Read More »

2001 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)

100 points James Suckling: "This is so layered and intense on the palate with lemons and dried pineapple, mango and honey. Full body, very sweet, but it remains tangy and vibrant. Shows such amazing balance and intensity. Crazy finish. Hints of vanilla and apple purée. One of the greatest Yquems ever. All about purity here." (9/2013) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. 1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes

Jancis Robinson: "Half bottle. Deep gold, savoury/sour apricot and orange peel aromas. Intense, viscous, dense and there's a slightly grippy texture on the palate still. Great depth, notes of almond and baked apple and all that sweetness counterbalanced by bracing acidity. Still seems so young, and promises more. 18/20 points. Drink 2012-2035." K&L Notes: 95 points Robert Parker: "Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. 1997 d'Yquem, Sauternes

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sensational Yquem, 1997 may be this estate's finest effort since 1990 (although I would not discount the 1996 turning out to be nearly as good). The 1997's light gold color is accompanied a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin, it looks to be a great vintage for this renowned Sauternes estate. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2055." (4/2003) 95 points Wine Spectator: "*Collectibles* Extremely concentrated, yet subtle. Aromas of honey and spice ...Read More »

Very rich and concentrated; full and sweet for Barsac but carrying no excess weight. Lovely pliant texture. Finishes very long, spicy and fresh. A very elegant wine with an impressively long, spicy aftertaste." (7/2000) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A classic example of elegance allied to richness and intensity, Coutet's 1997 exhibits an expressive, floral, citrusy, honeyed nose, with notes of orange, Chinese black tea, pineapple, and spicy oak. With terrific acidity, a voluptuous/unctuous palate, and sweet, powerful flavors buttressed by crisp acidity, it is a phenomenal Sauternes. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040." 1980 d'Yquem, Sauternes (very high shoulder fills, slightly soiled labels)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This year is a perfect example of a vintage that was much better for the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes than it was for the red wines. Yquem produced its greatest wine since the twin titans of 1975 and 1976. Medium golden, with a big, opulent, honeyed, oaky, flowery, tropical fruit bouquet, this wine is rich and concentrated, has very good acidity, a lot of botrytis, and a stunning finish. 1988 Rieussec, Sauternes

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Although the 1988 received the highest marks of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages, it remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The wine's acidity and youthfulness suggest this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should keep for 30 years."
