2014 de Landiras Rouge, Graves

95 points Decanter: "65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. Great intensity of classic Bordeaux fruit on the nose, cassis, dark cherries and liquorice. The rich round palate is bursting with fresh blackberry and blackcurrant, lovely silky tannins great length all in perfect harmony. *Decanter World Wine Awards Platinum - Best in Show: Best Red Bordeaux Varietals under £15*" (6/2016) K&L Notes: This property is located at the southern end of the Graves region, very close to Barsac and Sauternes. 2004 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. (RP)" (6/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Sexy, rather wild aromas of roasted raspberry and game. Supple but firm-edged, with good grip to the raspberry and mineral flavors. There's good fruit here but limited fat and a restrained sweetness. (ST)" (6/2007) Wine Spectator: "Aromas of blackberry and light tobacco. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium finish. (JS, Web-2007)"

2012 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves (Previously $16)

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost 8 weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was pr... Read More »

2015 D'Archambeau, Graves Top Pick!
2015 D'Archambeau, Graves

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 d'Archambeau has a strong graphite, pencil box scent on the nose - very Graves in style, almost austere in the context of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, gritty in the mouth with earthy, saline notes on the finish. It's a "grumpy" Graves...but I kind of like it. (NM)" (4/2016)

2014 Trébiac, Graves

You need look no further than Graves for a screamingly good example of ready-to-drink Bordeaux. The Château Trébiac property sits on a gravel plateau at Portets. Over the past several years, the winery and vinification have been upgraded and the vines (averaging almost 30 years old) have seen some new care regimen and rehabilitation as well. Informed by 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, the tones of cassis and tobacco exude from this value-driven Bordeaux, which drinks like a bottle at twice the price.

2012 Gazin Rocquencourt, Pessac-Léognan (Previously $25)

92 points Vinous: "Black cherry, plum, chalk, smoke, leather and gravel all flesh out in the 2012 Gazin Rocquencourt. Dark and baritonal in its expression, the 2012 is deep, plush and quite expressive. Substantial tannins appear on the finish, suggesting the 2012 needs at least a few years in bottle. Best of all, the 2012 delivers superb quality and personality. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. 2014 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

Olivier Bernard owns one of the crown jewels of Bordeaux, as these wines clearly make evident. The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is a total knockout. Precise, brilliant and finely sculpted, the 2014 possesses superb intensity. (7/2012) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The best ever wine from this estate (even better than their sensational 2005), this full-bodied wine offers notes of blueberry, black currant, asphalt and burning charcoal embers in a deep, layered and multi-dimensional style. Shows solid grip and should do well with cellaring. This has added some weight since the barrel tasting. Best from 2017 through 2022. (JM)" (3/2015) 90 points Vinous: "A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2012 Brown hits the palate with serious intensity and slightly rough contours that are going to need time to settle down. It has a more introverted bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and iodine. With rigorous swirling it still refuses to unfurl. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It builds nicely towards a lovely black olive and spice tinged finish that exudes finesse. Superb. Bid on this bottle of 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 95JS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050. (RP)" (08/2012)
