2004 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan Top Pick!
2004 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. (RP)" (6/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Sexy, rather wild aromas of roasted raspberry and game. Supple but firm-edged, with good grip to the raspberry and mineral flavors. There's good fruit here but limited fat and a restrained sweetness. (ST)" (6/2007)

2015 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves Top Pick!
2015 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted, and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost eight weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit w... Read More »

(2/2017) 91 points Vinous: "The 2014 Larrivet Haut-Brion is superb. Ripe red cherry, plum, spice, rose petal and savory herbs are neatly fused together. Succulent, fleshy and inviting, the 2014 is showing exceptionally well today. This supple, racy Pessac-Leognan should drink well right out of the gate. Very polished and seamless with flavors of fresh black cherries, blackcurrants and blue plums. Best from 2022." (2/2018) 96 points Vinous: "The 2015 Malartic Lagravière is just as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, voluptuous and dramatic, it captures all of the natural intensity of the year. 2014 Trébiac, Graves

You need look no further than Graves for a screamingly good example of ready-to-drink Bordeaux. The Château Trébiac property sits on a gravel plateau at Portets. Over the past several years, the winery and vinification have been upgraded and the vines (averaging almost 30 years old) have seen some new care regimen and rehabilitation as well. Informed by 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, the tones of cassis and tobacco exude from this value-driven Bordeaux, which drinks like a bottle at twice the price.

2016 l'Avocat Blanc, Graves

L'Avocat is in the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. The vineyards were purchased by Nicola and Sean Allison in 2002; the fruit was previously sold to Mouton Rothschild. At 300 feet above the Garrone River, the vineyards have stunning views of the lovely Côtes de Bordeaux. The vineyard's elevation is a key factor in its great drainage, and the soil is loaded with different color gravel that imparts textbook minerality to both their whites and reds.

2015 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival)

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was able to taste the 2015 Domaine de Chevalier twice and it showed sensationally both times. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that was harvested between October 1st and October 15th, this deep ruby/purple-colored effort has soaring aromatics of caramelized black cherries, cassis, lead pencil shavings, and forest floor. It has a more introverted bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and iodine. With rigorous swirling it still refuses to unfurl. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. The fourth vintage under Haut-Bailly ownership (because they declassified the 2013), this has appealing rich caramel and coffee bean edges and is beautifully elegant. It has soft, elongated tannins, and concentrated violet and fern notes, that seem to float through the palate. This property is really starting to show exactly what it can achieve. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. (JA)" (4/2017) 92-93 points James Suckling: "Lots of walnut and berry character. Medium-to full-bodied, round and silky with a lovely chocolate undertone. Very polish ...Read More »

2013 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Blanc, Pessac-Léognan

96 points James Suckling: "Dense yet agile Smith with dried apple, lemon, aniseed, and gunpowder aromas and flavors. Some stones too. Full body, very racy and fine." (2/2016) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This has a gorgeous feel, with opulent fruit offset by racy herb notes and acidity, showing lemon sherbet, shortbread and white peach flavors backed by a salted butter and tarragon-laced finish, with hints of talc and fennel skitter in the background. Seriously long and still a touch youthful on the finish, this is one for the cellar. Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. Best from 2017 through 2023. ( ...Read More »

2016 Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival)

97-98 points James Suckling: "Wow. This is incredibly rich and exotic. Full-bodied, so deep and long. It lasts for minutes. Perfectly polished tannins evidence how texturally focused and supple this is. Decadent and enticing. From organically grown grapes. Super quality of Cabernet is on show here. We will see if 2016 is better than 2015." (4/2017) 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that was picked between 29 September and 19 October at 35 hectoliters per hectare. 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

94 points James Suckling: "Extremely complex with cinnamon, dried fruits and dried flowers. Full body, super-integrated tannins and a silky, polished finish. Very impressive. Better in 2018 but very beautiful already." (2/2015) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This structured wine with big, bold red fruits offers ripe acidity, a dense texture and considerable concentration. It also has the hallmark freshness of the vintage that balances the strong aging potential. 2007 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Year-On tasting, the 2007 Haut Bailly has a beautiful, quintessential Pessac bouquet with touches of warm gravel filtering through the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive, tightly knit black fruit laced with cedar and white pepper. There is superb weight in this 2007 considering the vintage, doling out fine mineralité on the persistent finish. Very fine, but I would actually wait another couple of years before broaching. Tasted February 2017.(NM)" (6/2017) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A dense wine, very much in the line of powerful ...Read More »

2015 Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival)

92 points James Suckling: "A full-bodied red with blackberries, chocolate, spices and earth. Soft and layered tannins. Flavorful finish. So juicy and beautiful. Drink in 2020." (2/2018) 92 points Vinous: "The 2015 Clos Marsalette is rich, powerful and authoritative, just as it was from barrel. Black cherry, smoke, rose petal, menthol, licorice and savory herbs fill out the wine's ample frame effortlessly, but there is good energy to back things up. Time in the glass brings out the 2015's aromatic dimension. Clos Marsalette is arguably the most extroverted, flamboyant wine in Pessac-Léognan. Tasted two ...Read More »

2015 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan

98 points James Suckling: "This is so powerful with incredibly subtle fruit character of pineapple, peaches and apples. Some lees and cream. Full-bodied yet remains agile and tensioned. Wonderful finish. Hard not to drink now. For now or ageing." (2/2018) 95 points Vinous: "The 2015 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is rich and beautifully layered, with tons of depth and no excess weight. Lemon confit, orchard fruit, smoke, mint and floral notes emerge effortlessly. With time in the glass, the 2015 shows a range of lightly tropical-inflected flavors and the textural weight of the Sémillon. Absolutely impecc ...Read More »
