1970 Gazin, Pomerol

Robert Parker writes: "Readers may have forgotten (or never knew) that a chunk of this vineyard was sold to Petrus in the early 1970s, but what remains is still a superb terroir and incredibly well-placed on the plateau of Pomerol, adjacent to Petrus and across the road from Lafleur."

1970 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (high to mid shoulder)

Wine Spectator: "Deep garnet; concentrated cedar and tar nose, with hints of volatile acidity; very concentrated, with chewy cassis and cedar flavors; short of its peak; promising." (5/1993) K&L Notes: According to Michael Broadbent: "An excellent wine, still fairly deep, rich but showing some maturity. A soft, harmonious, slow-to-emerge but cedary, fragrant smoky bouquet, full rich, fleshy yet still tannic."

1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96RP, 94JS, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful. I do not think this wine will get any better, but a divine vinous experience now. (NM)" (11/2010)

1970 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

Michael Broadbent: "Fragrant and fruity in cask. Evolving pleasantly through the 1980s. Most recently, a good mature colour, distinctly sweet, sound, drinking well. Last noted at an office tasting at Christie's, June 1998. 3 stars." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 80)

1970 Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Haut-Brion, Graves (92RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Château Haut-Brion is a First Growth that has probably been over-shadowed by the Latour 1970 during its lifetime. However, this bottle proves that it is not to be underestimated; it highlights the glaring gap that exists between itself and another First Growth, the 1970 Château Margaux that I tasted alongside. There is plenty of vigor on the nose with dashing red berry fruit, cedar and black olive - just very Haut-Brion.The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced and fresh, nothing over-ambitious, just a Claret in the traditional sense of the word that gently builds towards a sous-bois dominated finish. This is an excellent showing, stout and a little austere, and you could argue an Haut-Brion with its peak in its wing-mirrors. Yet good bottles such as this will continue to offer pleasure for another decade. (NM)" (07/2016)

1970 Magdelaine, St-Emilion Back In Stock!
1970 Magdelaine, St-Emilion

92 points Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet; cedary nose, with green tea nuances and cranberries emerging; firm, lively and tannic, with concentrated though unevolved fruit flavors; a big wine, with much personality and style." (5/1993) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 has taken nearly 25 years to reach its plateau of maturity. It possesses an impressive dark garnet color with only slight amber at the edge, as well as a distinctive underbrush, earthy, currant and cherry-scented nose with plenty of minerals in the background. Powerful on the palate, with medium to full body, and gobs of spice, this meaty, fles ...Read More »

1970 Haut Bailly, Pessac-Leognan Back In Stock!
1970 Haut Bailly, Pessac-Leognan

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In a 1970 claret tasting held several years ago, Haut-Bailly performed well, indicating that this is probably the best vintage for the chateau between 1964 and 1979. It still has that in-your-face, up-front, smoky, sweet, herbaceous fruit, medium body, soft, velvety tannins, and a long, smooth, alcoholic finish. Anticipated maturity: Now." (Bordeaux book, 1998)
