1970 Pavie, St. Emilion

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lovely raisin coffee nose. Fruitcake. Lovely balance on palate. Succulent black fruits. Very youthful for 30 yrs old with the palate oozing liquorice and black cherry. Lush Merlot-rich finish. Very classy wine. Excellent. (NM)" (1/2000) Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet, with a hint of ruby; toasty, cedary nose, with strawberry nuances; rich, ripe cassis flavor; lively and plump." (5/1993)

1970 Calon-Segur, St-Estèphe

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another convincing piece of evidence that Calon-Segur's reputation for producing long-lived wine was hardly justified by this estate's performance during much of the sixties and seventies. Fully mature in 1978, with an attractive, charming, moderately intense bouquet of ripe Merlot fruit and spicy oak, this garnet-colored, slightly brownish wine has soft, supple fruit, medium body, and little tannin remaining." 1970 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

92 points Wine Spectator: "I drank a lot of this in Paris when I lived there in the mid-1980s. And I had a bottle this summer as well. Always outstanding. Shows intense aromas of prune and licorice. Full, velvety and long. This is a beautiful Bordeaux. At its peak. (Web-2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 is an old style Lynch Bages with plenty of dry tannin in the finish. Compellingly aromatic, it offers aromas of cedar wood, spice box, tobacco, earth, black currants, and new saddle leather. Spicy, concentrated, and burly, with mouth-searing tannin, this big, thick wine is a terrific example of Lynch ...Read More »

1970 Lascombes, Margaux (mid shoulder, oxidized capsule)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The fully mature 1970 is a fine example of Lascombes--darkly colored, ripe, full bodied, richly fruity, and fleshy... It is a spicy, fragrant, and altogether satisfying mouthful of amply endowed wine. (RP)" (1/1998) K&L Notes: Château Lascombes is one of Bordeaux's esteemed Second Growths, located in Margaux. What makes the estate's vineyards unique are the three distinct soil types--gravelly mound planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, clay-gravel planted with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and clay-limestone planted with Merlot. Another distinguishing fea... Read More »
