1970 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

Michael Broadbent: "Fragrant and fruity in cask. Evolving pleasantly through the 1980s. Most recently, a good mature colour, distinctly sweet, sound, drinking well. Last noted at an office tasting at Christie's, June 1998. 3 stars." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 80)

1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96RP, 94JS, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed ... (NM)" (11/2010)

1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of fruit. I am not sure how much longer the 19 ...Read More »

1970 Latour a Pomerol, Pomerol

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has always offered an opulent, rich, concentrated, glorious mouthful of Pomerol. Although there was considerable amber at the edge, this bottle exhibited loads of fruit, as well as a sweet, glycerin-dominated mid-section. With a complex, truffle, coffee, mocha, chocolatey, black-cherry-scented nose, this exotic, fat, ripe Latour a Pomerol remains one of the vintage's great successes...." (6/1996) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Firm in texture, but has hit that perfect balance between berry character and earthy maturity, finishing sweet and silky. A medium-weight wine." 1970 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1970 d'Yquem, Sauternes (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Somewhat less evolved than the 1971, and for me always a shade less interesting and complex, the 1970 Yquem is a large-scaled, rich, full-bodied, fairly alcoholic Yquem with significant flavor interest as well as crisp acidity. Unlike the 1971, which is close to peak maturity, this wine has a long way to go and is impressive, but not yet revealing all of its potential. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. (RP)" (01/1998)

1970 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (94RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Cheval Blanc dinner at The Ledbury. This has always been a great 1970 Saint Emilion. It has a noticeable deep hue. The nose is unashamedly rustic with mulberry, crushed flowers, wild heather and a touch of chlorophyll. Great definition and vibrancy: a wine wallowing in its secondary aromas. The palate has fine definition and demonstrated much more backbone than the Cheval ’78 tasted alongside. Here, the Merlot is undaunted by the Cabernet Franc and lends it a beguiling fleshiness, especially towards the ferrous finish. This is wonderful, that is a point. (NM)" (09/2011)

1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (Very High Shoulder) New!
1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (Very High Shoulder)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the 'First Growth' lunch in London. Nice clear colour. The bouquet definitely has more vigour then previous bottles encountered, with sandalwood, cigar box and cedar to the fore. Not a complex nose, but nicely defined and unashamedly 'classic' in style. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, good level of ripeness, elegant; harmonious but aloof. The second half is conservative but still fresh with just a touch of piquancy right on the finish. This Lafite is not going to go anywhere, but this shows that good bottles can still be pleasura ...Read More »
