1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of fruit. I am not sure how much longer the 19 ...Read More »

1970 d'Yquem, Sauternes (high shoulder, stained label) (Previously $380)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Somewhat less evolved than the 1971, and for me always a shade less interesting and complex, the 1970 Yquem is a large-scaled, rich, full-bodied, fairly alcoholic Yquem with significant flavor interest as well as crisp acidity. Unlike the 1971, which is close to peak maturity, this wine has a long way to go and is impressive, but not yet revealing all of its potential. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. (RP)" (1/1998) Jancis Robinson: "Rich and very sweet with more than a hint of orange peel." (1/2012)

1970 Palmer, Margaux (high shoulder)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nose is evolved yet still provides a fruity core of warm cherries backed up by game, tobacco leaf and a subtle earthy / mushroom character. The palate has a wonderful old-school structure with a medium+ level of slightly chewy tannins and a crisp backbone of acid. Long layered finish of savoury and mineral flavours." (5/2009)91 points Wine Spectator: "Medium-deep garnet; cedar, tar and black truffle nose, with cassis emerging; very ripe and rich, with mature fruit flavors, a sinewy texture and great length..." 1970 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1970 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (1.5L) (94WS). Wine Spectator: "One of the wines of the tasting. Fresh and complex, generous in character, with lovely dried cherry and spice aromas that follow through on the palate. Full-bodied, with concentrated fruit and firm tannins, this has a long life ahead." (11/1997)

1970 Trotanoy, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Trotanoy, Pomerol (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has developed magnificently over the last 4-5 years. More backward, and possibly even more concentrated than the 1970 Petrus (as well as more tannic), this huge, old style, massive, thick, rich wine is crammed with concentrated, chocolaty, berry fruit, with a hint of leather, smoked meat, and licorice. The wine's opaque garnet color reveals no sign of amber. The nose is just beginning to open. The flavors are so concentrated that I am going to go out on a limb and say this may be the most concentrated Trotanoy made in the post-World War II era. I suspect this wine can still be purchased for a relatively good price. Owners should plan on drinking it between 2000-2030. One of the four greatest wines of the vintage, the 1970 Trotanoy is the finest wine made at this estate save for the extraordinary 1961." (06/1996)

1970 Pavie, St. Emilion

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lovely raisin coffee nose. Fruitcake. Lovely balance on palate. Succulent black fruits. Very youthful for 30 yrs old with the palate oozing liquorice and black cherry. Lush Merlot-rich finish. Very classy wine. Excellent. (NM)" (1/2000) Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet, with a hint of ruby; toasty, cedary nose, with strawberry nuances; rich, ripe cassis flavor; lively and plump." (5/1993)

Bid on this magnum of 1970 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves (1.5L) (90WS). Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet; spicy vanilla nose, with cedar and cassis accents; very full-blown cassis flavor; very concentrated, generous and complex; has some volatile acidity, but it's not a flaw." (05/1993)

1970 Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac (high-mid shoulder, torn capsule)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the few wines that was not purchased in the early 1970s (I made a trade - and a good one, for this bottle), this deep, dark ruby-colored wine exhibits good liveliness in its color. The wine reveals the classic cassis, mineral, weedy tobacco, spicy nose of a top Pauillac. Full-bodied, concentrated, and close to full maturity, it is a flavorful, expansive, chewy wine. Although it has been distressingly inconsistent in previous tastings, I am convinced the off bottles had been cooked - undoubtedly by exposure to high temperatures. In this tasting, it ...Read More »

1970 Talbot, St-Julien

Esteemed wine critic Michael Broadbent considered 1970 to be a very good vintage, rating it four stars in his book, Vintage Wine. At Fourth Growth Chateau Talbot, a cold, wet spring set flowering back about three weeks. Beautiful conditions in June and dry weather throughout the summer and into the fall allowed for perfect maturity and a good harvest in June.

1970 Rieussec, Sauternes

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "...the 1970 is a corpulent, rich, sweet mouthful of viscous, chewy Sauternes. The moderately amber/gold color is a sign of approaching maturity, but this wine has the acidity and overall balance to drink nicely for at least another decade." (1/1998) K&L Notes: Michael Broadbent: "Still sweet. Lovely flavour. Last noted Dec 1995. 4 Stars" (Michael Broadbent's Pocket Companion, pg 142)
