1970 Calon-Segur, St-Estèphe

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another convincing piece of evidence that Calon-Segur's reputation for producing long-lived wine was hardly justified by this estate's performance during much of the sixties and seventies. Fully mature in 1978, with an attractive, charming, moderately intense bouquet of ripe Merlot fruit and spicy oak, this garnet-colored, slightly brownish wine has soft, supple fruit, medium body, and little tannin remaining." 1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of fruit. I am not sure how much longer the 19 ...Read More »

1970 Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1970 Haut-Brion, Graves ((90-92RP), 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "First tasted in March 2002 at an Off-line. Brown rim. Brown sugar, olives and leather nose. Quite rich for 1970. Balanced and very smooth palate. Coffee & sweet red fruits. Fully mature, a highly enjoyable wine (and far cheaper than Latour.) Somewhat under-rated by others. Then again chez Alex Hunt in November 2005. Although a little musty at first, this wine grows and grows on you. A cool, blackberry leaf, cranberry nose with lots of cedar and pine is followed by a tannic, almost rustic, broad-shouldered palate with cedary, tobacco-infused fruit. Very classic in style but suited the venison perfectly. (NM)" (01/2000)

1970 Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac (high shoulder)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the few wines that was not purchased in the early 1970s (I made a trade - and a good one, for this bottle), this deep, dark ruby-colored wine exhibits good liveliness in its color. The wine reveals the classic cassis, mineral, weedy tobacco, spicy nose of a top Pauillac. Full-bodied, concentrated, and close to full maturity, it is a flavorful, expansive, chewy wine. Although it has been distressingly inconsistent in previous tastings, I am convinced the off bottles had been cooked - undoubtedly by exposure to high temperatures. In this tasting, it ...Read More »
