1970 Poujeaux, Moulis

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Poujeaux was proffered by current proprietor Mathieu Cuvelier when I was over on the Right Bank. Old vintages of this Moulis can be a surprise. This 46-year-old wine was a little faded, but still yielded pleasure, the nose earthy, a little bony perhaps but still with vestiges of tart red cherries. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, light in the mouth but balanced and fresh, leafy and herbaceous towards the finish. It held up for 30-40 minutes in the glass before taking its final breaths and oxidizing. Old school for sure, at the end o ...Read More »

1970 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

Michael Broadbent: "Fragrant and fruity in cask. Evolving pleasantly through the 1980s. Most recently, a good mature colour, distinctly sweet, sound, drinking well. Last noted at an office tasting at Christie's, June 1998. 3 stars." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 80)

1970 Haut Bailly, Pessac-Leognan

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In a 1970 claret tasting held several years ago, Haut-Bailly performed well, indicating that this is probably the best vintage for the chateau between 1964 and 1979. It still has that in-your-face, up-front, smoky, sweet, herbaceous fruit, medium body, soft, velvety tannins, and a long, smooth, alcoholic finish. Anticipated maturity: Now." (Bordeaux book, 1998)

1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the 'First Growth' lunch in London. Nice clear colour. The bouquet definitely has more vigour then previous bottles encountered, with sandalwood, cigar box and cedar to the fore. Not a complex nose, but nicely defined and unashamedly 'classic' in style. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, good level of ripeness, elegant; harmonious but aloof. The second half is conservative but still fresh with just a touch of piquancy right on the finish. This Lafite is not going to go anywhere, but this shows that good bottles can still be pleasurable. 1970 Magdelaine, St-Emilion

92 points Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet; cedary nose, with green tea nuances and cranberries emerging; firm, lively and tannic, with concentrated though unevolved fruit flavors; a big wine, with much personality and style." (5/1993) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 has taken nearly 25 years to reach its plateau of maturity. It possesses an impressive dark garnet color with only slight amber at the edge, as well as a distinctive underbrush, earthy, currant and cherry-scented nose with plenty of minerals in the background. Powerful on the palate, with medium to full body, and gobs of spice, this meaty, fles ...Read More »

1970 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves

90 points Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet; spicy vanilla nose, with cedar and cassis accents; very full-blown cassis flavor; very concentrated, generous and complex; has some volatile acidity, but it's not a flaw." (5/1993) Jancis Robinson: "Transparent ruby. Mellow, biscuity nose - fully mature. A little spiky on the palate with acidity and volatility just starting to come to the fore. Rather hard work but with clean fruitiness dominating the palate, something the vintages of the 1970s above didn’t achieve. Slightly dry finish." (6/2008) K&L Notes: La Mission-Haut-Brion has a long and illustrious history in Grave... Read More »

1970 Suduiraut, Sauternes
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1970 Suduiraut, Sauternes. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A deep amber colour and a Beerensauslese-lite nose that is well defined, although lacking some botrytis. There are scents of Satsuma, beeswax and just a little chlorine. The palate is commendable, well balanced, a little ginger on the entry leading to a balanced palate with orange rind, Seville orange marmalade, almost Barsac-like on the finish. (Previously - Suduiraut can make powerful, rich wines that are often rustic and excessively alcoholic and hot when young. I am told they become more civilized with age, and certainly older, classic Suduiraut vintages have proven that to be true. " (11/2006)
