2012 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves (Previously $16) Top Pick!
2012 L'Avocat Rouge, Graves (Previously $16)

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost 8 weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was pr... Read More »

2014 Dassault, St-Emilion (Previously $32)

92 points James Suckling: "Dark fruits and dark tannins are the hallmark of this brooding beast. Either you like rather bold, dry tannins and this will excite you, or it won’t! But I love it." (2/2017) 92 points Vinous: "The 2014 Dassault is bold, fruit-driven and absolutely delicious, although the firm tannins are going to need some time to soften. Plum, violet, licorice and lavender are some of the signatures in this inky, extroverted Saint-Émilion. In 2014, Dassault is a sleeper. Tasted two times. (AG)" (2/2017) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Well-fruited, with fig, blackberry and boysenberry confiture flavors, showing a touch mor ...Read More »

2012 Les Fiefs de Lagrange, St. Julien (Previously $30)

Jancis Robinson: "Very dark purple. Quite intense, putty-like aroma. Soft and sweet, for early drinking. Very gently handled. Friendly even without real punch. (JR)" (4/2013) Wine & Spirits: "A bright cabernet, this wine is made from the younger vines at Lagrange. It has some green edges to its tannins, as well as some milk chocolate notes, mellowing the spicy finish of eucalyptus, anise and clove." (10/2016)

2012 Nenin, Pomerol (Previously $50)

93 points James Suckling: "Chewy and rich with a walnut, almond and delicate chocolate character as well as the ripe fruit. Full and very rich. Drink now." (10/2016) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "*** Cellar Selection *** Big and rich, this is a solid, dark and dense wine. Power and ripe fruit dominate the opulent structure. Produced by the Delon family of Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, it is a wine for aging. Drink from 2020, but the wine will be developing for more years after that. (RV)" (5/2015) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Nenin, which is the same blend as the 2015, appears to ...Read More »

2014 La Fleur Peyrabon, Pauillac (Previously $25) Top Pick!
2014 La Fleur Peyrabon, Pauillac (Previously $25)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A small part of Château Peyrabon (Haut-Médoc) is in the Pauillac appellation and is vinified and bottled separately. The wine delivers great fruit and equal richness. It is spice, packed with black plum and berry flavors. It is a powerful dense wine to age for several years. Drink from 2023. (RV)" (4/2017) 90 points Vinous: "The 2014 La Fleur Peyrabon is soft, supple and absolutely delicious. Although not especially complex, it offers striking purity of fruit and also drinks quite well today. Expressive floral and spice notes and a burst of red-toned fruit round things out n ...Read More »

2014 Poesia, St-Emilion (Previously $50)

93 points Vinous: "The 2014 Poesia is a powerful wine with serious density and richness. Black cherry, plum, spice and leather emerge with great reluctance. This packed, structured Saint-Émilion is going to need at least a few years to fully unwind. Even so, it is both impressive and promising. Helene Garcin and winemaker Alain Raynaud have done a terrific job here. The blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. (AG)" (2/2017) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Château Poesia 2014 was picked from 8 October until the 14 October, finishing with the Cabernet Franc. 2014 Fonplégade, St-Emilion (1.5L) (Previously $65)

92 points James Suckling: "Dark-berry and oyster-shell aromas follow through to a medium body, integrated tannins and a tangy finish. An almost burnt lemon undertone. Linear and polished. Very solid. Drink in 2019." (2/2017) 89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Château Fonplégade 2014 has a surprisingly light and reserved bouquet: pretty and floral but requiring a couple of minutes to get into its stride. The palate is medium-bodied with good backbone, a little edginess coming through with aeration, although it remains stubborn and linear on the finish. It just needs barrel aging to knit the component parts togethe ...Read More »

2014 de France Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (Previously $25)

91 points James Suckling: "Lots of hot-stone and currant aromas follow through to a medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Minerally. Better in 2020." (2/2017) Jancis Robinson: "Impressive density of fruit here - bold and powerful and multi-layered. This deserves bottle age to develop - the structural balance will last a good few years, and the ripeness is spot on. (RH)" (10/2016) Vinous: "The 2014 de Franc is a supple, fruit-driven red to drink over the next few years. 1990 Gilette "Crème de Tête" Sauternes (Previously $230)

98 points Wine Spectator: "A jaw-dropper, with quince, persimmon, mango, fig and blood orange marmalade notes providing a kaleidoscopic experience as this moves along, slowly pulling in more ginger, marzipan, green fig and date notes. The finish is so seamless it feels like glistening porcelain. Drink now through 2040." (12/2016) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1990 Chateau Gilette Creme de Tete is the latest release from the Medeville family. It has a curious bouquet that is minty and full of dried white flowers, but it feels contained at the moment, the aromas demanding more time in bottle to coalesce. The p ...Read More »

1975 Climens, Barsac (Previously $260)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1975 Climens has a glorious bouquet with beautifully defined citrus fruit, wild honey, orange blossom and just a touch of old antique furniture. It blossoms in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a killer line of acidity. This is still fresh and tense with marmalade, grapefruit, mandarin, bitter orange and brown spices. It feels long and tender in the mouth: quite a powerful Climens at its peak. (NM)" (6/2015) Jancis Robinson: "High-botrytis vintage, low yields (7.2 hl/ha). TA 4.5 g/l (sulphuric), RS 98 g/l. Restrained aromas and flavors of red cherry, mint, licorice and violet. Offers good but not outstanding intensity of flavor but finishes sweet and suave. Not the last word in complexity or length but nicely made and likely to provide delicious early drinking. Stephane Derenoncourt consults here. (ID)" (5/2011)

2014 Branon, Pessac-Léognan (Previously $60)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Warm and inviting, with copious layers of boysenberry, plum and blackberry compote inlaid liberally with singed apple wood, bacon and licorice root notes. Lots of tarry grip underscores the finish. Rather muscular and hefty for the vintage. Best from 2019 through 2029. (JM, Web-2017)" 91-92 points James Suckling: "A red with layers of berries, dark chocolate and stones that follow through to a full body, firm tannins and a fresh center palate." (3/2015) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Château Branon 2014 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon that is matured in 100% new oak. 2012 Le Petit Cheval, St-Emilion (Previously $190)

94 points Vinous: "The 2012 Petit Cheval is striking for many reasons, not the least of which is a very high percentage of Cabernet Franc that gives the wine much of its aromatic presence and overall depth. Deceptively medium-bodied in structure, the 2012 possesses remarkable balance and harmony. There is little question the 2012 Petit Cheval is better than the Grand Vin at many other properties. Rose petal, lavender, violet and mint notes leave a lasting impression on the finish. (AG)" (1/2016) 92 points James Suckling: "A refined and firm red with dried cherries, spices and coffee beans. The finish sails on and on, coating the palate with a porcelain feel, while an echo of bitter almond hangs effortlessly, like a lace curtain hanging on an endless breeze. Stunning. Best from 2018 through 2043. 2012 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac (1.5L) (Previously $120)

The fruit is still in the background here. (RV)" (4/2013) 90 points James Suckling: "A red with blueberry, spice and toasted-oak character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fruity, decadent finish. 79% cabernet sauvignon and 21% merlot. Better in 2018." 2013 Lafleur-Gazin, Pomerol (Previously $40)

88-90 points Vinous: "Crushed flowers, sweet red berries and spices are some of the notes that emerge from the 2013 Lafleur-Gazin. A soft, graceful wine, the 2013 possesses good overall balance, but only modest depth, something that is quite evident on the finish, where the drying tannins are pronounced. (AG)" (4/2014) Jancis Robinson: "Satisfyingly complete on the nose -- ripe black fruit, leather, cedar and bitter chocolate. A good brush of tannin on the finish, all in balance. Very nicely done. 17/20 points. Drink 2017 to 2027." (4/2014) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark ruby-red. Coffee, dark plum and strawberry on the s ...Read More »

2007 Doisy-Védrines, Sauternes

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 2007 Château Doisy-Védrines does not achieve the same level of precision as the 2006 on the nose, although there is plenty of botrytis here with scents of melted candle wax and white peach. The palate is vibrant on the entry with impressive weight: hints of orange peel and apricot with a tender, almost understated finish. This improves in the glass, gaining more complexity and nuance and yet never quite demonstrating the sheer ambition as the 2009. Yet I notice even within the limited amount of time at my disposal some meliorat ...Read More »

2013 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "The production is tiny, yet the potential of this wine is enormous, with its tight, textured structure that is still so young. It is opulent and generous while still keeping a tight rein on its emotions. A steely core is surrounded by fruit that has hints of apricots as well as citrus. This will be a very fine wine but it needs many years, so wait until 2022. 2005 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L) (Previously $300)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Displays floral, blackberry and mineral aromas, with a hint of fresh tobacco. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Has a fine, polished texture. This is a class act--the best since 1998 for the red." (3/2008) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Perhaps the finest wine made at this estate in many years (no doubt due to the influence of wine consulting guru Stephane Derenoncourt), the 2005 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with tiny portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A dark ruby/purple hue is followed by a classic Graves ...Read More »

1976 Climens, Barsac (Previously $270)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Bordeaux Index’s Chateau Climens dinner, this is the best bottle of ’76 I have encountered. A very clear, lucid amber hue. The nose is just beautiful, perhaps more perfumed and floral than previous bottles with almond, apricot, white peach, passion fruit, a hint of lime leaf and quince. The palate is also more delicate than previous bottles, vibrant acidity on the entry, quite edgy, a viscous heart with a dainty, dried peach finish. Beautiful. Tasted November 2009. The palate is full of tension: beautifully botrytized fruit, the finish furnished with lemon zest, quince and marmalade that linger long and seductively. It seems to shimmer with potential and well drink young or old. This is an estate that has really got into its stride thanks to winemaker Pierre Montegut. Drink now-2045." A huge, deep wine with laser-like acidity lifting the highly concentrated tropical fruit, white peach, spice and herb flavors. As youthfully chewy, thick and palate-staining as this is, it's also wonderfully light on its feet, showing uncommon class. One of the ten best Bordeaux wines of the year.
