2005 York Creek "Track" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $40) Top Pick!
2005 York Creek "Track" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $40)

After the last few years I think just about everyone has heard us pontificating about just how good, and how insanely inexpensive, the York Creek wines are. Luckily for us and our thirsty customers Fritz Maytag kept deep cellars over the years and still has plenty of wine for us to sell. After the rousing success of past vintages we just keep reloading because the wines are that good and you keep asking us for more. Our latest find is a horizontal of sorts with all three wines coming from the great 2005 vintage. We have two single block Cabernets and a r... Read More »

2005 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Wine Spectator: "A showy young wine that's smooth, rich and concentrated. Delivers firm, intense yet supple layers of currant, cedar, toasty, cedary oak and tannins that firm up, offering hints of mineral, sage and dusty berry." (5/2008) 91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "The well-crafted bottling comes up the classier of the winery's two Cabernet bottlings in 2005 and features loads of optimally ripened, blackcurrant fruit set against nicely proportioned oak and a smattering of dusty earth spice. It is fairly full-bodied, very supple in feel and sports a fine spine of integral tannins, and, if built in way ...Read More »

2005 Beringer "Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beringer’s 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve comes from the top selection from all their different holdings, with each vineyard aged separately for close to two years, then blended for quality. This blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc is a gorgeous example of the Private Reserve. Of course, it probably suffers from the fact that Beringer is part of a gigantic international conglomerate, but this is just a stunning wine – inky purple, with plenty of cassis, a hint of espresso, subtle background oak and forest notes. The color is op ...Read More »

2005 Colgin "IX Estate" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lastly, the 2005 Proprietary Red IX Estate, from one of the most strikingly beautiful vineyards in all of Napa, high on Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake Hennessey, is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Inky purple with a provocative and profound bouquet of graphite, white flowers, cassis and blackberry as well as hints of coffee and chocolate, this full-bodied classic has perfect balance, undeniable purity and a long finish. Drink it now and over the next 20 years. 98+ points. (RP)" (6/2015) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This B ...Read More »

2005 Blankiet "Paradise Hills Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard (1,200 cases) reveals a chocolatey espresso roast note with mocha, blackberry and cassis, high tannins, but full body, superb concentration, purity, and an almost Graves-like scorched earth character. This wine needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last 25-30 years. (RP)" (12/2007) 93 points Vinous: "Deep ruby-red. Distinctly cooler on the nose than the 2004, offering scented aromas of blackberry, violet, bitter chocolate, tobacco and wild herbs, along with a hint of hay and a citrus high note. 2005 D.R. Stephens "Moose Valley Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from D. R. Stephens gets a slightly higher rating largely due to more complexity and better integration of the tannins, which seems to give the wine a more expansive nose, but this is a classic Napa Cabernet, with black fruits, loamy soil notes, a hint of bouquet garni, and lots of spice box and earth. The wine is round and generously constructed, with a full-bodied, supple personality. It should drink nicely for a decade. (RP)" (12/2008)

EMH is dedicated to making one wine and making it right: a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon grown on their estate in Calistoga, just east of the Silverado Trail. Surrounded by mountains, this tiny one-acre vineyard of gravelly loam soil produces remarkable fruit. Their dark and brooding 2005 is 100% Cabernet, made in tiny quantities (160 cases). 2005 Barnett "Cyrus Ryan" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "The wine is enormously ripe, a lip-smackingly fruity 100% Cab that seduces the palate with massive black currant, licorice, sweet date and cedar flavors. Yet it has a tannic astringency that suggests, although it does not require, aging. Should develop well for at least a decade." (6/2008) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Broad-shouldered, intense and concentrated, with a tight, rich band of spicy currant, cedar, hazelnut, sage and herbal scents. Young and tightly wound, this needs time in the cellar or a good decanting. Best from 2011 through 2017. 427 cases made. (JL)" (5/2008)

2005 Araujo "Eisele Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A nose of black raspberries interwoven with floral notes of blackcurrants and spice jump from the glass of this dense ruby/plum/purple wine. This famous vineyard at the northern end of Napa Valley, which in this era was owned by Bart and Daphne Araujo (today owned by François Pinault, the proprietor of Château Latour), can certainly make the argument that it’s one of the first growths of Napa Valley. Sweet, velvety tannin, medium to full body, and extraordinary complexity and elegance characterize this wine, which is seamless and drinking beautifully. Wh ...Read More »

2005 Buccella Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine has terrific fruit concentration, full-bodied power, substantial but ripe tannins, and a long, long finish. This wine should drink nicely for at least two decades. (RP)" (12/2008) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby. Deep, enticing aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate and black cardamom. 2005 Robert Mondavi Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon

Generous and open in the mouth, with a sappy quality to the flavors of cherry, leather and earth. More mid-palate sweetness and flesh here. This is higher-toned than the NV bottling in a positive way. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and lingering notes of smoke and earth. (ST)" (5/2008)

2005 Lewis Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Wines like this can be very good when young, but this one has so much room to grow that it needs to be allowed the opportunity to mature into a richer, rounder bottling over the next decade." It’s a big, ripe Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (as it should be) coming in at 15.2% natural alcohol. This has gorgeous notes of fig, plum, blackberry, cassis, with no real oak showing through, at least at age ten. Primarily dry-farmed, from steep hillsides in Conn Valley, the challenge, according to winemaking consultant Philippe Melka, has always been to get the tannins under control, as they can be rustic.
