2014 Wines Of Substance Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Top Pick!
2014 Wines Of Substance Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted out of barrel, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon should be just as good as the 2013. Seeing all native yeast, 42 days on skins, 12 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it offers classic plum and blackberry fruit intermixed with ample licorice, toasted bread and violet aromas and flavors. Concentrated, balanced and the real deal, buy it by the case and drink it over the coming 4-5 years. Readers need to check out these latest Charles Smith offerings released under the Substance label. 2014 Columbia Crest "H3" Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

Though the 2014 vintage has yet to be professionally reviewed, the 2013 earned 91 points and a "Best Value" designation from Wine Spectator: "Supple, focused and distinctive, with a core of ripe plum, currant, sage, and floral flavors, mingling effectively and harmoniously on the long, expressive finish. The tannins are nicely shaped. Drink now through 2020." (12/2015)

2013 Cadence "Coda" Red Mountain Bordeaux Blend

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Ben Smith based this 2013 on Cabernet Franc (38 percent), the balance Cabernet Sauvignon (26 percent), Merlot (22 percent) and Petit Verdot (14 percent). Perhaps it’s the latter that gives the wine its suave purple tones, its depth of flavor. It’s likely the franc provides the gingerbread spice and gentle, mouthwatering freshness, and an elegance that Red Mountain is not known for. Despite the wine’s firm, framing tannins, this is delicious now; those tannins also provide the stuffing for ten years in the cellar." (10/2015) 91 points Vinous: "Bright ruby-red. 2013 Upchurch "Upchurch Vineyard" Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "About as sexy as Red Mountain gets, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard offers almost overflowing notes of creme de cassis, graphite, licorice and building minerality to go with a full-bodied hedonistic, voluptuous and luxuriously textured style on the palate. Coming from a site on the southern end of the appellation and aged in new oak (there's a splash of Merlot in here as well), this beauty has tons of sweet fruit, ripe tannin and an already approachable, hard to resist style. I'm sure there's plenty of tannin hidden in here, but they're cov ...Read More »

2012 Andrew Will "Sorella-Champoux Vineyard" Horse Heaven Hills Red Blend

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A wine that I think rivals the 2007 Sorella, the 2012 Sorella comes all from the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA and is made from 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc. Aged 18 months in 35% new French oak, it has smoking notes of blackcurrants, black raspberry, toasted bread and spice-box to go with a full-bodied, awesomely concentration, yet layered, balanced profile on the palate. There’s a lot of tannin here, so short-term cellaring is advised. This beauty will have 2-3 decades of longevity and will stand toe-to-to ...Read More »

The palate brings plenty of the same, with pleasing richness and texture to the flavors, and lots of hang time on the finish." (9/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Incorporating 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, the 2012 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is another terrific wine from this estate that shows the house style with its plump, soft, fruit-forward personality. From the winery: "This wine is drawn from the original Cabernet Sauvignon blocks at Seven Hills Vineyard, planted by my father in 1980. This vintage marks the 25th year I have been making Cabernet Sauvignon from these same, precious old vines. After two very cool vintages, 2012 was a more “normal” vintage, pleasantly warm with heat accumulation spread through the growing season. Showing the perfume and headiness of the vintage, it nevertheless stays vibrant and lively on the palate while delivering layers of fruit and texture. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A monumental wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of those wines that presents such an over the top array of aromas and flavors that it’s hard to figure out what you think about it with just a quick glance. It’s only with the second or third sip that you really start to see how special this effort truly is. Offering up perfumed, intense aromas of plum, violets, ink, licorice and black currants, it flows onto the palate with a massive, incredibly full-bodied texture that builds through the mid-palate and carries layers of polished tannins, awesome purity of fruit and blockbuster length. Most likely not for everyone given the sheer size, it is an incredible wine in my opinion. Still tasting like a barrel sample, it will have 30+ total years of longevity. Drink 2017-2037. It will provide much pleasure from 2015 to 2026 at the least. (JM)" (10/2009) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Sweet blackberry, cassis, licorice pastille and violet on the nos ...Read More »

2013 Double Canyon Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine still appears to be in its shell, with aromas of plum, black fruit, spearmint and herb, along with a distinct green tinge that becomes more prominent over time. There’s plushness to the fruit and herb flavors while it retains well-balanced acidity" (9/2015)

2008 Quilceda Creek "Palengat Vineyard" Horse Heaven Hills Bordeaux Blend

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Palengat Proprietary Red Wine is made up of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, with the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. The fruit was sourced entirely from the Palengat Vineyard. Pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, violets, dried herbs, black currant, and blackberry aromas compose the bouquet of this impeccably balanced offering. It opens in the glass to reveal plush, succulent flavors, superb concentration, plenty of ripe tannin, and at least 4-5 years of aging potential. It will deliver optimum drinking from 2015 to 2028 ...Read More »

2012 K Vintners "The Klein Blend-Klein Vineyard" Columbia Valley Bordeaux Blend

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 41% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 Klein (they do two wines from this site, a 100% Syrah and this Bordeaux blend) has fabulous Cabernet notes of currants, ground herbs, crushed rocks and graphite to go with a deep, full-bodied, layered, concentrated style on the palate. There's an upfront feel here due to the wealth of fruit, but it has ample tannic grip through the mid-palate and finish. As usual, this was a massive lineup by Washington's wild man, Charles Smith. Despite the larger-than-life persona, these win ...Read More »

2011 Betz Family "Père de Famille" Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $80)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Intriguing scents focus upon chamomile and Mediterranean herbs, while the fruit flavors are wild and brambly. Cherry candy and red licorice play broadly across the palate, lingering through a beautifully balanced and extended finish." (7/2014) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(blended with 9% petit verdot and 3% merlot): Good bright red-ruby. Musky red berries, licorice, thyme, rosemary and pepper on the scented nose. Creamy-sweet, suave and deep but at the same time precise and youthful, offering lovely perfumed flavors of red berries, cocoa powder (from the Taransaud oak?) and anise. Ve ...Read More »
