1982 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
1982 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Kenwood's Artist Series is Sonoma's answer to Mouton Rothschild's artist labels, and the wine was made from selected parcels of Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The 1982 label features "Greek Village," by James Harrell, an American artist who lived in Greece and Crete for many years before moving back to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The '82 is described in James Laube's 1990 California's Great Cabernets: "Tight, lean and concentrated, the 1982 Artist Series is still quite closed and compact and in need of further cellaring. The spice, cedar and plum fla... Read More »

1984 B.R. Cohn "Olive Hill" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "To date this is my favorite wine produced by B.R. Cohn. The 1984 exhibits a deep, thick, red color with amber at the edge. The nose opens to reveal sweet, jammy, red and black fruits intertwined with scents of herbs and toast. Expansive, chewy, and fat, with an attractive fleshiness, this full-bodied Cabernet is drinking well yet promises to last for another decade. It is an impressive, authoritatively-flavored, well-balanced wine. (RP)" (8/1994) Wine Spectator: "Very concentrated and youthful, with ripe blackberry and cherry flavors backed by full tannins and firm acidity ...Read More »

1986 B.R. Cohn "Olive Hill" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Wine Spectator: "This has reached a fine drinking plateau, as the tannins have softened and the sweet plum and black cherry flavors have a nice black olive and herb accent. You'll still encounter firm tannins, but there's lots of richness and flavor, too." (12/1996)

1991 Laurel Glen "Counterpoint" Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points and a Spectator Selection, Wine Spectator: "A rough and tumble young wine with great potential. It shows remarkable depth of black cherry, blackberry and currant flavors and lots of fascinating shades of bay leaf, smoke and tar. Tannins need until 1998 or 2000 to subside. 2,750 cases made." (11/93) And, according to Robert Parker: "Laurel Glen's 1991 Counterpoint offers an indication of what can be expected from the soon to be released estate-bottled Cabernet Sauvignon. The Counterpoint exhibits a dark, opaque color, a big, herbaceous, chocola... Read More »

1992 Lambert Bridge Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

According to the Wine Spectator: "Dry and well oaked, with a smoky wood edge that overrides the ripe plum and currant flavors. Finishes with a good dose of wood and fruit, with cellaring into 1998 recommended." (12/95)

1993 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Leaner in profile and not quite as deep as the 1992, but nicely structured and attractive. This has a slightly more Bordeaux-like feel and balance and displays a cherry, earth, tobacco and herb bouquet. Blueberry, plum and espresso show on the even, smooth palate. It closes long with soft, ripe tannins and the herb notes atop the dark fruit." (4/2002) 90 points Wine Spectator: "*** Cellar Selection *** A bottling from this winery's flagship lineup, characteristically tight and firm, with chewy tannins. The core of spicy currant, earthy anise and cedary oak flavors folds together nic ...Read More »

1993 Ravenswood "Pickberry Vineyards" Sonoma Mountain Bordeaux Blend

91-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ravenswood's wines are not for those tasters seeking subtle, lighter-styled offerings. The impressively built, opaque purple-colored 1993 Pickberry is an extremely powerful, chewy wine with considerable fruit extraction, huge body, high tannin, and superb purity and richness. It requires 5-6 years of cellaring and will drink well for 20+ years. It may turn out to be as good as the glorious 1992. For now, I would give the 1992 a slight edge because its fruit quality and texture provide more fat and intensity. However, that is splitting straws. (RP) ...Read More »

1994 Beringer "Alluvium" Knights Valley Red

90 points Wine Spectator: "Shows off appealing currant, coffee, berry and spicy flavors, the texture is supple and polished, the finish is deceptively complex. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec." (3/1998) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I reported last year, Beringer's new proprietary red wine, Alluvium, appears to be an excellent product. Made from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, production averages about 10,000-14,000 cases per year. The 1994 Alluvium is a textbook proprietary wine. 1995 Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Wine Spectator: "A rich, potent yet elegant, understated style, with ripe, polished currant, blackberry, cherry and spice. Finishes with firm tannins." (6/1998) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very good ruby-red. Bright, pure aromas of cassis, shoe polish and minerals. Juicy, vibrant dark berry flavor in the mouth. Has strong material for the vintage. Finishes firm and fresh, with tannins in harmony with the wine fruit. Should show more nuance with a couple years of bottle aging." (5/1998) K&L Notes: Beringer already had three decades of experience with their Knights Valley property by this vintage date.

1997 Simi Winery Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

Another winner from Simi. This wine is soft and ripe and shows excellent finesse. Winemaker Nick Goldschmidt feels that their Cabernet is a true reflection of the Sonoma County appellation. It is made in a classic, traditional style, following in the footsteps of its Bordeaux role models. An excellent value from the great 1997 vintage!

1997 Arrowood "Réserve Spéciale" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

The Arrowood Reserve Cabernet comes from hillside vineyards that have good drainage and yield complex, ageworthy wines. The flavors are of blackberry and plum fruit, spice and notes of cedar, which spill over with rich blackberry, cherries and cassis. 97 points Robert Parker: "It sounds preposterous, but when I put my nose in the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale, it reminded me of the 1996 Latour. California Cabernets are bigger, weightier efforts than most Bordeaux, so the comparison ends with the aromatics. There are 1,611 cases of this profoun... Read More »

1998 Chateau St. Jean "Cinq Cépages" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made in a light style, the medium-bodied 1998 Cinq Cepages (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit-Verdot) exhibits a sweet nose of toast, earth, cedar, licorice, black cherries, and chocolate. There is excellent concentration, but because of the vintage conditions, this wine does not possess much volume, breadth of flavor, or intensity. (RP)" (12/2000) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The wine’s cherry aromas are almost stewy, thanks to the toast and eucalyptus notes that envelop them; expect more cherry, soy and some herbal complexity in the mouth ...Read More »

Of the 2003 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L),Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (14.7% natural alcohol) is an equal part blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. There is no doubting the Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine! Classic notes of cedarwood, underbrush, licorice, black currants and tobacco leaf are textbook definitions of this varietal. The color is even denser than the Reserve Claret's, and the bouquet offers additional notes of Chinese black tea. Full-bodied with layers of depth and richness, moderately high but sweet tannins, and a terrific finish, it will be even better with 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last two decades. 2006 Laurel Glen Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (Pre-Arrival)

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky ruby. An expansive bouquet displays flamboyant dark berry compote, cherry-cola, licorice and dried rose. Palate-staining cassis and kirsch flavors are framed by silky tannins and gain an exotic candied floral quality with air. For such a deeply concentrated wine, this is strikingly lithe and precise. The finish strongly echoes the red fruit and floral notes and clings impressively. Still young and unformed, it exhibits phenomenal richness and equilibrium as well as a finish that lasts nearly a minute. Its dense plum/purple color is accompanied by notions of black fruits, forest floor, truffles and spring flowers. It should age for 25-30+ years. 2009 Vérité "La Muse" Sonoma County Bordeaux Blend

The wine reveals an extra level of texture and richness along with full body, an unctuous texture, and a super ripeness and richness that does not go over the top. The tannins are noticeable, but well-integrated as are the new oak and acidity. 2009 Captûre Winery "Revelation" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* The winemakers call this their Pauillac-style wine, meaning that its character is marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a brilliant wine, vastly deep, imposing and elegant, with a potent mountain flavor of black currant. The estate vineyard is very high in the Mayacamas Mountains, and you can sense the small size of the berries in the wines intensity, the sheer concentration, as well as the tannins--which are hard and tight. Clearly this is a wine that requires time in the cellar. Try in 2018, but it could worth aging well beyond that. ...Read More »

Dark red/blackish fruit, smoke, tobacco, menthol and new leather meld together in a juicy, approachable Cabernet. The wine's mid-weight structure appears best suited to near-term drinking, but I doubt that is going to be much of an issue here. Sweet floral notes reappear on the expressive finish. There are no hard edges or angular contours here."
