1990 Kenwood "Jack London" Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Black/purple in color, this wine possesses a controversial nose of loamy, earthy scents, black truffles, and rich cassis. Phenomenally extracted and rich, as well as loaded with tannin, this full-bodied, mammothly-constituted wine is long, rich, and in need of 5-7 years of cellaring. 1992 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend

91 points Robert Parker: "The 1992 Les Pavots, reminiscent of a top-class St.-Julien/Pauillac, is the first vintage that has begun to exhibit some complex cedar, lead pencil, and cassis aromas. Medium to full-bodied, with impressive richness, this layered, intense yet balanced wine still needs another 2-3 years of cellaring, although it reveals more immediate charm and secondary aromas than its three younger siblings. Medium to full-bodied, with an inner-core of sweet, rich fruit, outstanding purity, and a powerful yet elegant personality, this layered, multi-dimensional wine should drink well young, but keep for 20+ years. Of the 1994 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The superb 1994 Les Pavots is, to my palate, the finest example of this wine Peter Michael has yet made. Since its bottling, this deep, saturated purple-colored wine has taken on a gorgeous nose of cassis intermixed with violets, licorice, and attractive spicy oak. Sweet, rich, and surprisingly showy for a Les Pavots, this medium to full-bodied wine possesses a luscious, multi-layered texture, outstanding depth, and attractively integrated tannin and acidity. When I tasted it, it was more evolved and delicious than I had anticipated given its recent bottling. (RP)" (12/1997)

The roasted tobacco, cedar, scorched earth and creosote nuances are present, in addition to copious blackberry, blueberry, and cassis flavors. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1997 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend (96RP, 92ST, 92W&S, 92WS). The 1997 blend consists of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged in French oak (50% new), and bottled without filtration. Fortunately, there are 4,351 cases of 750 ml bottles, as well as 330 cases of magnums. A blue/black/purple color is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of toast, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and cedar. Full-bodied, with silky tannin, low acidity, and layers of concentrated, pure black fruits judiciously wrapped in subtle toasty oak, this wine can be drunk early, but promises to hit its peak in 5-7 years, and last for two or more decades." The Rafanelli family has been making wine in California's Dry Creek Valley since before Prohibition, though the grapes for this cabernet were planted in 1986 on a steep, terraced hillside behind the winery.
