2005 Beringer "Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beringer’s 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve comes from the top selection from all their different holdings, with each vineyard aged separately for close to two years, then blended for quality. This blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc is a gorgeous example of the Private Reserve. Of course, it probably suffers from the fact that Beringer is part of a gigantic international conglomerate, but this is just a stunning wine – inky purple, with plenty of cassis, a hint of espresso, subtle background oak and forest notes. The color is op ...Read More »

2005 Heitz Cellar "Trailside Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points John Gilman: "The folks at Heitz are very bullish about the quality of the Trailside bottling, and given the quality of the fruit here, I can see why this is the case. But this wine has a bit of work to do carrying one hundred percent new oak, and at this young age it is still rather marked by its oak component on both the nose and (to a lesser degree) the palate. To be fair to this wine, it is three years younger than the ’02 Bella Oaks that was tasted alongside of it, and consequently it has had nowhere near the same amount of time to integrate its wood. In any case ...Read More »

2005 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
2005 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Casual elegance defines this California classic. It's an herbal Cabernet, with scents of grape skins and black olives rising out of the earthy tannin. Round and smooth in the middle, this ends with a clean and gentle feel. Ready for rack of lamb." (8/2010) Connoisseurs Guide: "Very much in the rich yet mannerly tradition of Silver Oak Cabernets, this wine is medium-full in body, supple and reasonably well-polished all in all. Its tilt to creamy, slightly cedary oak comes at slight but still noticeable expense to its underlying black cherry, currant-tinged fruit, and that oak a ...Read More »

2005 Opus One Napa Valley Proprietary Red

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This famous wine, first created by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the late Robert Mondavi, started off life as a very good, but rarely exceptional wine. Over the last ten or more years, the administration at Mouton Rothschild, particularly the team led by Philippe Dhalluin, has truly pushed the level of quality to the point where this is clearly one of the great wines of Napa. And after so many years, it represents the pinnacle of French viticultural knowledge combined with that of California and Napa’s Shangri La-like microclimate. The 2005 O ...Read More »

2005 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points John Gilman: "The 2005 Martha’s Vineyard has an absolutely flamboyant nose that soars from the glass in a celestial blend of red and black cherries, mint, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, Rutherford Dust and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very, very pure, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, beautiful complexity, a very generous attack, impeccable focus and balance and stunning length and grip on the ripely tannic and perfectly poised finish. This tastes as if it could be a young release of the 1975 or 1978, it is that classic in size and shape, despite ...Read More »

2005 Pride Mountain Napa-Sonoma Counties Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The deep ruby/purple-colored 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (58% from Napa and 42% from Sonoma) possesses a full-bodied mouthfeel as well as loads of cassis fruit, and smoky, subtle oak in the background. Round, plump, and hedonistic, it should drink well for a decade. (RP)" (12/2007) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* A big, juicy young Cab that impresses for sheer flashiness, yet needs some time for its edges to soften. The ripe blackberry and cassis fruit is deep and generous, with nuances of smoky oak and sweet herbs. But the tannins are very strong and astringent. Needs cel ...Read More »

2005 Switchback Ridge "Peterson Family Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More backward, but still accessible is the inky/purple-colored 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard. A sensational perfume of melted licorice, black currants, smoked meats, underbrush, and toasty oak are followed by blackberry liqueur-like flavors. This is a powerful, full-throttle, concentrated Cabernet to consume over the next 15+ years. (RP)" (12/2007) 92 points Wine Spectator: "The initial whiff of new leather and toasty oak is appealing, though this is a bit tight on the palate, taking time for the zesty wild berry, currant and black cherry flavors to unfold, ending ...Read More »

2005 Ovid Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good red-ruby. Flamboyantly sexy aromas of raspberry liqueur, woodsmoke, incense, rose oil, soy sauce and truffle. Sweet, sexy and deep, with a creamy, almost decadent core of framboise and soil flavors given energy and lift by underlying minerality. Offers an uncanny combination of silkiness and verve and finishes with suave tannins and outstanding length. One of the sexiest California wines I tasted this spring. 2005 Bond "Matriarch" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This year’s Matriarch is very similar to Harlan Estate in structure, and in some ways, a superior wine, or at least more delicious now. Shows the most beautiful black currant, cedar, blueberry pie and Asian spice flavors. What makes the structure so gorgeous are the firm tannins. Ultimately, it’s a refined, exquisite red wine. Hard to imagine a better one for drinking over the next decade, and just shows that price sometimes has no relationship to quality." 2005 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (note that rarely is any Merlot utilized at the historic Napanook Estate in Yountville). The alcohol, by California standards, is a relatively modest 14.1%. Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage's greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurr ...Read More »

2005 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (93RP, 92VN, 90WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon at age ten is still a young, vibrant, dense ruby/purple -colored wine with lots of classic cassis fruit and a touch of earth undertones. It offers relatively soft and silky tannins by the standards of Montelena, but they’re there. It is full-bodied, rich and impressive. Cabernet Sauvignon from the northern end of the Napa Valley in Calistoga tends to be the St.-Estèphe of Napa. This wine is certainly one of the great ones. Forget it for another 3-4 years and drink it over the following 20-25. (RP) 93+" (06/2015)

2005 Spottswoode "Family Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Tasted in a big lineup of St. Helena Cabernets, Spottswoode’s magnificent ’05 stood out. It’s a massive powerhouse, explosive in black currant, cherry pie, plum, chocolate, anise and cedar flavors that are detailed and precise. However, the wine, which was blended with a little Cabernet Franc, is graceful and balanced. Drinkable now due to its softly refined tannins, but has the integrity to ride out the years. Easy to find, with 3,896 cases produced." 2005 Forman Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot aged 24 months in three-fourths new French oak, it tips the scales at 14.8%, which by Ric Forman’s standards seems somewhat higher than usual. This delicious, savory, elegant wine is restrained and understated, but authoritative, which is what he does so well. It is the result of forty-plus years of winemaking experience, probably matched today only by Sonoma’s Dick Arrowood. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Colgin "Cariad" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (100RP, 97VN, 95WE, 94JS, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend that Colgin fashions from three vineyards owned by David Abreu (Madrona, Thorevilos and Howell Mountain) is called Cariad. The 2005 Proprietary Red Cariad consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Offering up spring flowers and garden aromas, sweet blueberry and black raspberry fruit, a touch of charcoal embers, graphite and background toast, it is fleshy and full-bodied, and again, meriting a three-digit score. This is absolutely remarkable wine. As it sat in the glass, it developed some rather compelling chocolaty, licorice undertones. This is a great classic to drink over the next 20-25 years. By the way, for those interested, the cooperage generally chosen is dominated by Taransaud barrels, but there are at least four different coopers. (RP)" (06/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 D.R. Stephens "Moose Valley Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (OWC - 91RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from D. R. Stephens gets a slightly higher rating largely due to more complexity and better integration of the tannins, which seems to give the wine a more expansive nose, but this is a classic Napa Cabernet, with black fruits, loamy soil notes, a hint of bouquet garni, and lots of spice box and earth. More recently, the vineyard is managed by the super-viticulturalist David Abreu, and the wines have been made under the consulting brilliance of world-famous Michel Rolland ever since he first started consulting in 1999. Lush, rich and sweet, with an intriguing smoky character and lovely lightness for a wine with so much breadth and volume. Unusually powerful and deep for this bottling; complex and distinctive. 2005 Seavey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This historic estate was acquired by William and the late Mary Seavey in 1979, and their first eye-opening performances, for me, were the 1990 and 1991 Cabernet Sauvignons. Primarily dry-farmed, from steep hillsides in Conn Valley, the challenge, according to winemaking consultant Philippe Melka, has always been to get the tannins under control, as they can be rustic. Certainly he has achieved that consistently for the last decade. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate was aged 19 months in 50% new French oak, and there are only 100 cases of it. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Levy & McClellan Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - 95RP, 94ST, 94VN) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A limited production of a very powerful and massive wine from two of California’s most famous winemaking gurus, Bob Levy and Martha McClellan, this wine remains primordial and backward, especially for a 2005. Loads of graphite notes interwoven with cassis, new saddle leather, blackberry and earth are impressive. It may sound unusual, but what came to mind is tasting some of the more recent vintages of Château Montrose in St-Estèphe in Bordeaux. This wine still needs another 5-6 years of cellaring easily. This masculine, vigorous, bigger-than-life, full-throttle wine will evolve for another 25-30 years. 95+ (RP)" (06/2015)

(JL)" (10/2008) K&L Notes: Entre-deux-mers, meaning "between two seas," is one of the largest appellations in the Bordeaux region and is situated between the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers. Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 2005 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knight's Valley Bordeaux Blend (3L) (95RP, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Les Pavots (3,600 cases of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot) is a sensational wine, with a style that suggests a hypothetical blend of a great St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Chocolatey cassis notes intermixed with incense, licorice, and a hint of black olive are present in this wine. When it hits the palate, it comes across as very Pomerol-like, with lushness, full body, and opulence. The tannins are sweet, the pH high, and the wine gorgeously full, pure, dense, and long. It’s a terrific example of non-interventionalist winemaking that has turned out a beautiful, silky-textured wine that should age effortlessly for 15+ years. Like so many 2005s, this wine has really put on weight since I tasted it last year. (RP)" (12/2007)
