Ramos Pinto White Port

White port is one of the world's most civilized aperitifs, and we here at K&L think that the Ramos Pinto is one of the best. Made from Malvasia Fina and Codega grapes (mostly grown on the Ramos Pinto estate) that are picked quite ripe, this wine is then aged for three years in traditional port barrels called "pipes." Full-bodied and exotic, it is incomparable on the rocks with an orange twist. Since it has had extended barrel age and is fortified, it is no problem to have keep it in the refrigerator for a month after opening it, but I doubt it will last ... Read More »

1977 Dow's Vintage Port (Previously $150)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years. (RP)" (1/1989)92 points Wine Spectator: "Medium brick-red. Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Fonseca "Bin 27" Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lucid dark ruby color, the Bin 27 has a sweet nose of raisin and fig, complemented by copious dark cherry and black plum. The palate is sweet and spicy on the entry with that fig motif continuing with plush dark chocolate infused black fruit. The finish is short and abrupt, but there is a lingering peppery note to keep customer satisfied. The Bin 27 forms a perfect introduction to the delights of Port. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins. (Web-1989)"95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. Full-bodied, with a sweet palate and a fine texture." (12/1999)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With a pale colour, this wine has developed into mainly earthy, meaty, gamey aromas with discernable notes of loam, underbrush and a touch of caramel over the sultana and Chinese dried plum fruit. 2012 Taylor Fladgate "Vargella Single Quinta" Vintage Port

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Quinta de Vargellas Port, a typical Douro blend, was aged in large French oak vats for 24 months and bottled in 2014. It comes in at 103 grams per liter of residual sugar. This opens steely and gripping, with fine acidity, firmness on the finish and enough concentration in this lighter-styled vintage. The best of the trio submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, it does everything well and mostly exceeds expectations. It more or less combines a bit of the initial power displayed by the Fonseca and the expressiveness of the Croft, and adds silky ...Read More »

1983 Warre's Vintage Port (375ml)

90 points Robert Parker: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1983 is richly perfumed and fragrant, which is so typical of the ports from this vintage, and is seemingly more forward than normal."

91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. (Web-2008)"90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop... they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent Warre vintages. Extremely concentrated, rich, even luscious, this full-bo ...Read More »

1985 Fonseca Vintage Port

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age ...Read More »

1977 Taylor Vintage Port
Bid on this bottle of 1977 Taylor Vintage Port (97WS, 96RP, 95WE). Wine Spectator: "Good ruby color still. The nose is fresh, with lots of crushed berry and plum, with a hint of piecrust. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a caressing texture. This delivers loads of complex fruit and spiciness. Medium-sweet. A beauty. Will improve for decades, but why wait? (Web Only-2008)"

1977 Taylor Vintage Port

97 points Wine Spectator: "Good ruby color still. The nose is fresh, with lots of crushed berry and plum, with a hint of piecrust. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a caressing texture. This delivers loads of complex fruit and spiciness. Medium-sweet. A beauty. Will improve for decades, but why wait? (Web Only-2008)"96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness th ...Read More »

1985 Graham's Vintage Port

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. (RP)" (1/1989)96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This is really excellent. Always has been. Just starting to come around. (Web- ...Read More »

1970 Taylor Vintage Port Top Pick!
1970 Taylor Vintage Port

99 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold." (2/2007)98 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly lives up to Taylor's superb reputation. Deep ruby, with intense violet and chocolate aromas, full-bodied, with gorgeous fruit flavors, full but well-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. Ama ...Read More »

1994 Warre's Vintage Port

95 points Wine Spectator: "*Top 100 Wines of 1997* A great surprise for the vintage. Displays fabulous concentration and complex character with it's layers of very sweet fruit, chocolate and cherry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins. Long finish with plenty of grip. Beautiful wine." (4/1997)94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impre ...Read More »

1963 Croft Vintage Port Top Pick!
1963 Croft Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator: "Has great elegance and harmony, and should continue to improve for many years. Medium ruby-red, with very fresh plum aromas, medium-bodied, with very delicate fresh fruit flavors, lively acidity and a delicate finish." (1/1989) Jancis Robinson: "Rich and raisiny. Light nose. More than a hint of those cough sweets - Fisherman’s Friend – about it. Fully mature. 19/20 points." (7/2007) K&L Notes: It's a fine time to discover the joys of vintage port, like this 50-year-old Croft from a great year, and at a great price considering all its years spent in the cellar. Wine critic Jancis Robinso... Read More »

Quinta do Tedo Tawny Port

Jancis Robinson: "Still relatively pink. Sweet toffeed fruit on the nose. Rich and full in the mouth. Easy but quite dense and concentrated for a tawny. Quite a distinct style." (11/2008) K&L Notes: Quinta do Tedo is a single quinta Port house owned by Vincent Bouchard (you may have heard of Bouchard Pere et Fils as well as Domaine William Fevre, both owned by his relatives). Vincent, however, chose to strike out on his own many years ago, first by working for a cooperage and then by seeking out a property where he could produce delicious wine as organically as possible. He found his... Read More »
