2007 Heitz Cellar "Trailside Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points James Suckling: "A wine with lovely restraint with plums, blueberries and hints of tobacco. Earthy. Full and silky and long. Lovely length. Juicy and delicious. Needs a year or two to come together." (4/2012) 92 points Vinous: "Still a young wine, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic nuance. Dark red cherry, plums, mocha and spices round out this nicely layered Cabernet. Racy, powerful and voluptuous, but with enough tannic backbone and structure to drink well for a number of years, the 2007 Trailside is showing quite well today ...Read More »

2005 Heitz Cellar "Trailside Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Wine Spectator: "This fine new release, with some bottle age, shows signs of subtle maturity. Aromas of mocha, cedar, dried currant and spice box follow through to a full body, This is well-built, with fine balance and good length. (Web-2011)" K&L Notes: In the early 1980s, the Heitz Family acquired a marvelous Rutherford vineyard bordered on one side by the Silverado Trail and nudged on the other by the Conn Creek. Thus the Trailside Vineyard was born. Aged for three-and-a-half years in a combination of American and French Limousin oak, the 2005 is elegantly perfumed to complement a... Read More »

2002 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This appears to be one of the great efforts from Chateau Montelena, something I think I was correct about when I gave it an 'in the bottle' rating in 2006 of 95+. It is still an amazingly young wine that came from old vines on the famous St. George rootstock that did not require replanting because of the phylloxera epidemic that swept through Napa in the late 1980's and 1990's. Despite its lofty 14.4% alcohol (high by Montelena standards) and the overall flamboyance of the 2002 vintage, it needs another 4-6 years of cellaring. This young, classic Caberne ...Read More »

2005 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Wine Spectator: "Minty bay leaf aromas are pure, with a spicy edge, leading to firm dark berry, mocha, mineral and sage flavors that are tight and well-structured, with firm, ripe tannins that provide an excellent backbone. Much too young now, however tempting. Should only get much better. Best from 2013 through 2022. (JL)" (11/2011) K&L Notes: Martha's Vineyards has become one of the most well known Cabernets around the world for its unique mintiness, its rich layers of complexity and its remarkable overall balance. 1985 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at The Sampler in South Kensington. This has a pure cedar-dominated bouquet with very fine natural freshness and an almost Pauillac-like austerity. Perhaps just a little muffled, but good vigour. The palate is quite tart on the entry, dusty tannins with piquant cherry fruit, leading to a dry tobacco-tinged finish that suggests this is just past its prime. But it has a nonchalance that is still attractive. Tasted December 2010. Full-bodied, firm and focused, this is complex and concentrated without being heavy, offering the wine's classic style and personality. (JL)" (10/2009) K&L Notes: A legend in Napa Valley Cabernet, Martha's Vineyard in the Valley's Oakville appellation is now certified organic by CCOF. Heralded as a classic, the 2004 shows pure "Martha's" Cabernet blackberry and black cherry aromas and flavors along with the iconic wine's tell-tale minty note. T... Read More »

2006 Cain "Five" Spring Mountain District Bordeaux Blend

Jancis Robinson: "Dark purplish crimson. Appealing juicy fruit with a little overlay of walnuts on the nose. Some personality and a fruity core. Quite dusty and full blooded with slightly rustic tannins. Distinctive! I like the fact that the winemaker has not been afraid of tannin. Quite burly rather than super smooth. Out of the mould – so therefore mountain fruit..? I just wonder whether the fruit won’t fade a little bit too early for the tannins? Dry finish. But this is serious artisanal wine. (JR)" (3/2010) K&L Notes: The 2006 Cain Five is a warm, plump, plush wine. It has a nice ... Read More »

90 points Wine Spectator: "Excellent structure and depth of flavor, built around a core of rich yet elegant currant, mineral, black cherry and cedary oak flavors. The tannins are chewy and show a touch of earthiness and then veer to dryness, but the fruit flavors push through. (Web 2005)" Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Tight aromas of cassis, graphite, cola and mint. Sweet, dense and concentrated, with strong berry and oak flavors. Has the sheer fruit to supports its firm structure and substantial tannins. Much sweeter and stronger than the merlot." (6/1998)

1999 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Cask 23" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Connoisseurs Guide: "How do you spell controversial? With one of the few split scores ever given by Connoisseurs' Guide. Most tasters loved the power, loved the tightly focused black cherry, slightly dried currant fruit, loved the boldness and the way there is a sense of polish developing in the background, loved the structure that promises to keep the wine going for a couple of decades yet. The dissenting voice questions whether the higher alcohol and the slight bit of stalkiness at the edges will eat into the wine's aging potential. However, there is also the structure, among the greatest in California Cabs. The acidity is fine, but the tannins are stupendously rich, sweet and complex, practically a food group in themselves." Full-bodied and dense, with Montelena’s typical power, tannin and reserved nature, this is a big, rich, formidably endowed red that requires 4-5 years of cellaring. (10/2000) K&L Notes: When Spring Mountain Vineyard was established in the early 1990s it combined four separate properties--La Perla, Chevalier, Alba and Miravalle--and a lot of Napa Valley history. It also quickly established itself as the source of some extremely age-worthy wines. Form the winery: "The wine has a brilliant ruby red color of considerable depth. The wine's aroma gives impressions of smoke and cedar wood. It is... Read More »

1980 Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

89 points Wine Spectator: "No Tasting Note (1984)" K&L Notes: Joseph Phelps Vineyards was just a baby when this 1980 was made, having produced only a few vintages since the estate was founded in 1972. Wines like this are what put California Cabernet on the map: elegant, with lots of fruit and a solid core of firm tannin. Cabernets from this era were certainly built for the long haul.

1995 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Wine Spectator: "A seductive style, with lots of spicy, vanilla-scented oak that leads to a rich, complex core of currant, black cherry, olive and plum. The tannins are smooth and polished... (JL)" (8/1998) 90 points Vinous: "Good bright, dark red. Sexy oak tones to the aromas of musky dark berries, menthol and dark chocolate. The enticing silky, spicy palate shows a light touch. An elegantly styled wine with a restrained sweetness and juicy, nicely integrated acidity to its plum and chocolate flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of granular tannins and very good lift and length. (ST) ...Read More »

1982 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the finest examples of the 1982 vintage, this wine has been a reliable performer for over a decade. It is one of only two B.V. Private Reserves made during the decade of the eighties to merit an outstanding rating. The 1982 exhibits a saturated dark ruby color with only slight lightening at the edge. The nose offers copious quantities of sweet, jammy, red and black fruits intertwined with plenty of spicy, toasty new oak. (RP)" (6/1995) K&L Notes: According to Michael Broadbent: "Colour like intense blackcurrant juice, very sweet nose, sweet on palate too, full... Read More »

1985 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1985 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (93ST, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red; barely a sign of development. Floral, cedary aromas of crystallized berries (raspberry, cassis, mulberry) and graphite; extremely youthful. Thick, large-scaled and very strong in extract; layered and deep. Strong but harmonious acidity gives the wine a vibrant character. Conveys a sense of totally expressed soil. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and superb sweetness. From a rather low-alcohol year with high natural acidity and lower-than-average yield. 93+ (ST)" (07/1998)

1987 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1987 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Chateau Montelena has made so many sensational Cabernets that it seems almost impossible to believe that their 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate could be even more profound than any of the exceptional wines made previously at this property. The black/purple color, the extraordinary bouquet of rich cassis, violets, and licorice, the massive extraction of flavors, sensational depth, super ripeness, and a length that must last over a minute, suggest to me that this is easily the most concentrated and potentially longest-lived Cabernet Sauvignon that Chateau Montelena has ever made. The extract level is incredible, yet the balance is there. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2025. (RP)" (10/1993)

1980-1982 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Vetical
Bid on this 6-bottle 1980-1982 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Vetical, including 2-bottles of 1980 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2-bottles of 1981 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2-bottles of 1982 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the 1980 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon,Jordan was known as the ultimate "Restaurant wine" (read: ready to drink upon release) but has stood the test of time as an ageable California Cabernet Sauvignon. This 1980 is one of the best that Jordan has produced. Very soft and herbal, the 1980 has a warm, round quality to it with fine balance. A ripe wine but not overly so. Drinking beautifully now with some years ahead of it at optimum drinkability. Highly recommended. From the winery writes: "Our 1980 vintage has remarkable, rich color for its age. A lovely backbone of good acidity has kept this beautifully soft wine alive for 30 years. It’s an intriguing, quiet-spoken wine with subtle scents of s
