What makes this DOC of Matelica so special is its geographical position and geological character. Poderi San Lazzaro is a 15-hectare, organically-farmed estate in the Marche, located between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. This lovely and wonderfully affordable Sangiovese shows hints of smoke to complement the floral, cherry-inflected nose. The fruit is clean on the palate, which is medium-bodied, with good acidity, soft tannins and a vein of minerality. Great for pasta night.
Intense notes of acacia, broom and field flowers define the bouquet of this wine. The taste is very very dry, full-flavored and fresh with a slightly bitter aftertaste that works so well with food. Try pasta in clams, whole roasted fish with green olives, lighter risotti, and most any cooked vegetable dish.

The largest producer of Verdicchio di Matelica DOC wines, Belisario has been making wines in the Marche region of Italy since 1971.
As described by the importer, "Luigi Giusti’s Visciola is made in a centuries-old Marche tradition of making dessert wine with cherries. The production is actually quite complicated, as two varieties of cherries are processed separately with half of them being dried in the sun for 40 days. Grape wine from the current vintage is used as a base wine, but the fermented cherries are not pressed. Rather, a ripasso process is employed with some wine from the previous vintage. San Lazzaro's Grifola is made from 100% Montepulciano grapes from the calcareous clay soils of Offida in Marche; a historic winegrowing region nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains.
