2010 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2010 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! In the spectacular 2010 vintage, the Crian... Read More »

2013 Mas Alta "Black Slate" La Vilella Alta Priorat Top Pick!
2013 Mas Alta "Black Slate" La Vilella Alta Priorat

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a joint venture between famed Rhône négociant Michel Tardieu, his oenologist Philippe Cambie and importer Eric Solomon. From the area of Priorat known as the Vilella Alta, these are high-density vineyards planted more than 1,000 feet above sea level. The vines average between 15 to 60 years old. The final blend of the 2013 Black Slate is 60% Grenache, 35% Carignan and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged for one year in French oak (60% new and 40% one-year-old). The color is inky/bluish/purple. 1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... Mas Codina Cava Brut Reserva Penedès

Mas Codina is a 40 hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 20 to 30-year-old vines and estate bottled. Though it does not say it on the label, the current disgorgement is based entirely on the 2010 harvest. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, and is aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before disgorgement. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 100% ... Read More »

2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja

92 points James Suckling: "This has a beautiful depth of fruit with spice and dark fruits. Hints of parsley and cilantro. Full and super silky with a long and beautiful finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungen... Read More »

2012 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2012 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "2012 was one of the driest and warmest years on record (the third driest August since 1961, the fourth warmest since 1961). The 2012 Rioja Crianza la Montesa is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 15% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena) from grapes grown in the La Montesa estate in Alfaro, Rioja Baja where the red Garnacha reigns over Tempranillo. The wine is getting lighter and more ethereal, but this ripe 2012 has a heady nose of cherries in liqueur but also black and sour cherries, unnoticeable oak plus just a pinch of dark spices. The palate is soft and silky ...Read More »

Can Mayol Loxarel "999" Brut Nature Rosat Penedes Top Pick!
Can Mayol Loxarel "999" Brut Nature Rosat Penedes

91 points Wine & Spirits: "There’s intriguing complexity to this firmly structured rosé, a meaty wine that’s dry without feeling tannic. The mousse is finely integrated into the flavor, set to lift the flavors of duck confit or roast quail." (8/2012) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Loxarel 999 Rosat is made up of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Trepat. Salmon pink in color with persistent small bubbles, it is a tasty wine best used as an aperitif." (5/2011) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Orange-pink. 2009 Can Mayol Loxarel "Gran Reserva de Familia" Brut Nature Penedes Top Pick!
2009 Can Mayol Loxarel "Gran Reserva de Familia" Brut Nature Penedes

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Gran Reserva de Familia is a traditional blend of the three Cava grapes produced by the traditional method (but it's not a Cava, it's a Penedès sparkling wine), which aged in contact with the lees in bottle for 50 months with no dosage. The nose is full of fennel, flowers and aromatic herbs, with hints of orange peel that made me think of a chalky barrel-fermented white, more a white wine which happens to have bubbles. Those are the flavors you find in the palate, certainly unusual but they give it a completely different and welcomed personality ...Read More »

2012 Bodegas Teso La Monja "Almirez" Toro Top Pick!

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Almirez (a 1,000-case cuvée of 100% Tinta de Toro) was aged 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted between 1949 and 1999. Yields were a conservative 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, ground pepper, blackberries and cassis. This full-bodied, Northern Rhône Valley-like Spanish red exhibits meaty/lard notes, terrific density and purity, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds. 2008 Miguel Merino "Vitola" Reserva Rioja

*A K&L direct import! This is our latest arrival from Miguel Merino, whom we like to call "the hardest working man in Rioja." Having begun his humble "retirement project" in the early 1990s by restoring an older bodega just down the hill from the historic town of Briones, Miguel either owns or rents to own a total of around 8 hectares of vines, all of which are located in Briones; not only is this village specific Rioja, but it happens to come from one of the most sought after villages in all of Rioja Alta, where many top bodegas have some of their most ... Sweet, penetrating and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and mocha flavors underscored by juicy acidity. At once rich and energetic, finishing with strong thrust, supple tannins and a whiplash of floral pastilles." 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The outstanding 2012 Tarima Hill is 100% old-vine Mourvèdre from a vineyard planted between 1935 and 1970, whose vines are largely ungrafted. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A new kid on the block, the pure Garnacha 2013 El Molar carries the name of the vineyards where the vines were planted in 2006 on sand and chalk soils covered with gravel. It was foot trodden and fermented in cement vats and aged for nine months in used 500-liter oak barrels. The nose, after the reduction has blown off, is quite classical but clean showing roasted aromas and hints of dark spices, balsam and perhaps leather. 2012 Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla

This wine saw a big change with the 2008 vintage, when Cabernet Sauvignon disappeared from the blend and got more focused and true to its birthplace. 2012 could be the finest vintage to date, as there was no 2012 Pie Franco, as quantities were really short and those grapes are in this b ...Read More »

(5/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Reserva just feels very Rioja, with notes of leather, cedar, cigar box and a core of red and black fruit. 2014 Bodegas Albamar "Albamar" Albariño Rias Baixas

Xurxo Alba is a top talent in Rias Baixas. He knows his way around the Albariño! With vineyards that he tends in the district of O Castrelo (Cambados), Xurxo makes a crisp, lively and linear style of Albariño. With great acidity and wonderful fruit purity, this is a seriously good wine and a terrific value at under $20. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

Tio Pepe (Gonzalez Byass) Fino Sherry

Jancis Robinson: "Salt, fresh green apple, iodine and mushroom with a winning creamy texture and lovely clarity. Excellent, as usual. (RH)" (11/2014) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talking about which, the NV Tio Pepe Fino is an icon of Sherry wine. Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. It has a light nose of dried flowers, almonds and olives, in a subtle way and a dry palate dominated by the chalky notes. Light and easy to drink, it is a good introduction to Fino Sherry. (LG)" (8/2013) Wine Spectator: "hows a rounded edge for a fino, with blanched almond and whi ...Read More »

2012 Raventos i Blanc "de Nit" Rosé Conca del Riu Anoia

90 points Vinous: "Light orange-pink. The incisive, mineral-laced nose evokes fresh strawberries, tangerines and flowers. Vibrant red fruit and orange pith flavors unfold slowly on lithe and nervy palate. In a distinctly elegant, understated style, with no excess fat and a firm closing bite. I find this to be as graceful and precise as numerous pink Champagnes that sell for much more." (1/2016) K&L Notes: Raventos i Blanc was founded in 1986 by Josep-Maria Raventos, a member of the Codorníu family who wished to create a small, quality-oriented winery that would stand apart from the lar... 2011 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero

Alejandro Fernandez' Condado de Haza may be less famous than its sister winery, Pesquera, but it also produces terrific wines that are classically built Ribera del Dueros made not to coat the palate with sweet oak and glycerine, but rather to age gracefully and accompany what is on your dinner table. This all Tempranillo wine comes from vines originally planted in 1989 on an ideal, south facing slope of calcareous clay soil, with some gravelly sections as well as a vineyard slope downward towards the Duero river. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wi... Read More »

2013 Descendientes de Jose Palacios "Petalos" Bierzo

Produced from primarily Mencía, with a smattering of other local varieties thrown in, this is typically a very nicely made bottle of wine, produced from slate and clay vineyards at different elevations and orientations, in the Bierzo D.O. just west of León. Just as the change in scenery and topography indicates that one is at the border of the central meseta and the cooler northwestern portion of the country, Petalos typically reflects this as well, striking a fine balance between sturdy, medium weight fruit and more mineral, floral components. Enjoy wit... Read More »

2013 Joan d'Anguera "Altaroses" Montsant

The wines made by brothers Joan and Josep d'Anguera have changed dramatically in the past three years. Altaroses is relatively younger vine Garnacha, farmed organically (and in fact, Demeter certified biodynamic), and picked relatively early. Trodden by foot periodically for a few days, fermented with its own yeast, and allowed to age in old barrels, there is a delicacy, purity and freshness to this wine that makes it so drinkable. A perfect window into the style here. Another indicator of the rising quality at Joan d'Anguera: we had a 2013 Finca l'Argat... Read More »

2014 Alvaro Palacios "Camins del Priorat" Priorat

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This ultra young, jovial wine is a commercial success in the thirsty local restaurant market. It is really affordable too, considering that it bears the signature of Álvaro Palacios. It is bottled at different phases, released already because 2012 and 2013 were short vintages, and this lot is the first bottling with around four months in barrel; the last lot is kept in large oak and cement vats so all lots are more or less four months in barrels. Ripe, juicy and somewhat balsamic, it shows a Priorat character that is highly drinkable with fine tannins an ...Read More »

2013 Primitivo Quiles "Cono 4" Monastrell Alicante

Here is a perfect example of what Spain's many lesser-known D.O.s are capable of when good vineyards are combined with sensible, traditionally-minded work in the cellar. Composed of 100% Monastrell, this wine is all black olives and meaty, savory characteristics on the nose, with a dark cherry fruited palate that also boasts balanced acidity, very good minerality and a complete dryness, a lack of any cloying ripeness or oak derived sweetness, which I find incredibly refreshing and appealing, particularly for a wine of this modest price. Try this with bra... Read More »

Lustau Almacenista Oloroso "Pata de Gallina" (500ml)

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Juan García Jarana, the motorcycle magnate of Jerez, sells a portion of his soleras to Lustau for this delicate Oloroso. It starts with notes of candied almonds, coconut palm syrup and caramel. The hint of salinity lends complexity and freshness, without diminishing that delicate, pleasing sweetness." (6/2009) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of a bigger painting that includes coffee, bitter chocolate an ...Read More »
