2006 Bodega Weinert "Cavas de Weinert" Mendoza

Long known as the winery that releases some of the most traditionally made Malbec and Malbec blends in Argentina (large oak foudre fermentations and ageing, late releases) Bodega Weinert has changed very little in their winemaking process, which they say is based upon Bordeaux practices in the 20th century - the mid 20th, that is! A blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from what many consider the best vintage of the 21st century in 2006, the cavas bottling is drinking quite well now, as it will for some time to come. An Argentinian classic.

2007 Nicole Chanrion Cote de Brouilly "Domaine de la Voute des Crozes"

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Essentially, the 2007 Cote de Brouilly for the U.S. is the same as for other markets except that it is not filtered. An invigoratingly saline and tart edge to the abundant, pure black fruits is on display. Notes of black tea and wet stone add intrigue. There is a lovely textural polish and brightness to a finish that suggests almost a Riesling-like call and response of fruit and mineral. Enjoy this over the next 2-3 years. Nicole Chanrion’s promising, well-concentrated, and spirited 2008 was still tinged with malic acid and loaded with CO2 when I last ta ...Read More »

2013 Kabaj "Ravan" Slovenia

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This friulano is shy at first, offering simple flavors of green pear in a slightly chewy texture. The wine gains complexity over several days, becoming creamier, with succulent peach and honeydew melon flavors in a honeyed richness. Vibrant acidity runs through the wine's core, keeping the flavors fresh and as cool as a cucumber on the way to a bone-dry finish." K&L Notes: Kabaj (Ka-bye) have farmed their vineyards for many generations. When Katja Kabaj met French oenologist Jean-Michel Morel after his stint at an Italian winery, they fell in love and eventually mar... Read More »

2013 Wiston Estate "Cuvée" Brut West Sussex England (Blue Label)

95 points Decanter: "**Platinum Trophy for Best English Sparkling Wine - 2017 DWWA** Beautiful nose with sweeter autolysis character. Caramel, ripe stone fruit, pear juice and a salted bread notes to finish, with a full and harmonious rich texture and good persistence." 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A toasty touch of brioche joins ripe red and yellow-apple notes on the nose. The palate has even more of that autolytic richness, grounding both tart red apple and ripe lemon notes. Fine and creamy, the mousse highlights the fruit freshness while an earthier, toastier, richer background shimmers through enticin ...Read More »

2013 Aleph Semillon Mendoza (Previously $24)

San Francisco resident Roberto Rodriguez Canal is the mind behind Aleph, a winery whose wines we have truly enjoyed carrying over the past several years. According to Roberto: "We do not produce wine to please mass demand. Our wines are not over extracted and definitely not over oaked, we produce limited quantity of wine with its own character." Aleph Semillon uses fruit from a 70 year old vineyard in Lujan de Cuyo. On the palate, this shows nicely dry, but with a citric, waxy yellow fruited quality. Stone fruits and melons as well, with the clean fl... Read More »

2004 Almaviva "Almaviva" Bordeaux Blend Maipo Valley

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Almaviva is tyled similar to the 2005. The multi-faceted aromatics deliver vanilla, clove, floral notes, red and black currants, and a hint of chocolate. It is a bit more forward than the 2005 with excellent focus and delineation. Give this elegant yet concentrated wine 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it through 2030. Almaviva is a partnership of Bordeaux first-growth Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro. Made in the style of top of the line Pauillac, the blend is typically 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22-23% Carmenere (a very close relative ...Read More »

2013 Giesen "The Fuder - Matthew's Lane Vineyard" Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough (Elsewhere $50)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fuder is German for a large wooden vessel, used in this case for the fermentation and aging of wine. Hints of struck-match complexity mark the nose, giving way to notes of grilled nectarine. The wine is full and rich in the mouth, with a mouthwatering finish that marries stone fruit and pink grapefruit into a stunning finale." 92 points James Suckling: "A complex, waxy and textural take on the theme, lime and lemon fruits, hints of tropicals, honeysuckle and stony elements, the palate is supple, smooth and even, more lemon and tropicals here, pineapple to close. Drink now, really op ...Read More »

2003 Almaviva "Almaviva" Bordeaux Blend Maipo Valley

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Impressive in every way. The color shines an irridescent ruby, while the bouquet is massive, an amalgamation of fresh-cut cedar, pencil lead and lush berry fruit. Ripe as can be and balanced, with plushness and depth you don’t normally find. Finishes round and creamy, with vanilla and liqueur notes. (MS)" (10/2006) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Quite ripe, with braised fig, stewed plum, black currant paste and cherry preserve notes backed by roasted coffee and bacon notes. A tarry edge drives through the very lush finish. Shows more raw power than freshness, but still quite packed and ...Read More »

2003 Concha y Toro "Don Melchor" Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto

96 points Wine Spectator: "With a great nose of currant confiture and cocoa powder, this full-scale Cabernet sports dark fig, currant and blackberry fruit layered with loam, cedar, tobacco, mineral and coffee. Long and authoritative finish just sails on thanks to rather regal tannins. *Ranked #4 on Top 100 of 2006, Highly Recommended* (JM)" (9/2006) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "No tasting note given. Don Melchor has been considered one of Chile’s iconic wines since its inception in 1987. (JM)" (6/2007) 91 points Wine & Spirits: "Reflecting the warm vintage, this is a ripe version of Don Melchor. 2000 Massandra "Kagor South Coast" Red Dessert Blend Crimea Ukraine

A rare dessert wine from the oldest winery in the Ukraine. The Massandra appellation stretches along the south coast of the Crimea. Sweet wine production goes back to the early 19th century in the region, which flourished under the unquenchable demand of the Tsars. Here, the winemaking history remained intact under communism, unlike what later happened behind the Iron Curtain to the sweet wine estates of Hungary. According to Robert Parker: "Founded by Tsar Nicholas II in 1894, the Massandra Winery, on the outskirts of Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, su... Read More »
