2015 Domaine Renaud Mâcon-Villages Top Pick!
2015 Domaine Renaud Mâcon-Villages

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it - and this is such a wine. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

2015 Domaine Renaud Mâcon-Solutré

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless for others. ... Read More »

2014 Domaine Paul Pernot Bourgogne Chardonnay

Though the 2014 has yet to be reviewed, the 2013 earned "Outstanding Top Value" from Burghound: "This too is extremely fresh though with a bit more aromatic breadth to the floral, citrus, pear and apple-scented nose. The middle weight flavors possess an attractive texture and solid concentration before terminating in a balanced and lingering finish. I would suggest holding this excellent effort for 2 to 3 years though it could be approached young. Recommended." 2013 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Oncle Vincent"

92 points James Suckling: "A rich and delicious white with bright acidity plus sliced apple pie and lemon. Bright and satisfying. From the Burgundy appellation just below Puligny. This is all barrel fermented and aged. Long finish." (6/2015) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A subtle touch of matchstick character sits atop the still fresh aromas of pear and various floral elements. There is good volume to the punchy and nicely detailed flavors that possess an appealing richness on the acceptably complex but pleasantly persistent finale." 2014 Chateau Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé Top Pick!
2014 Chateau Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé

From importer David Milligan Selections: "Slow natural fermentation, aged on the lees, 70% in stainless steel tanks and 30% in French oak barrels. This blending of oak and steel creates an elegant wine of great finesse. Yellow gold to the eye. The aroma of this white Burgundy is clean and offers generosity and depth along with accents of blanched nut and citrus. The wine enters the mouth with a clean attack and has a particularly long line ending with etched, persistent acidity, inflections of yellow and white fruits, and a faint vanilla note. This white... 2012 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Blanc

Maison Leroy is a négociant house steered by the indomitable Lalou Bize-Leroy. She only works with growers whose farming and fruit meet her exacting standards. Praise from Antonio Galloni: "Lalou Bize-Leroy's 2012s are stratospheric. Remarkably dense and concentrated, even by Leroy standards, the 2012s are invigorating, deeply reflective of their origins and utterly captivating. Specifically, the overall harmony of these wines and the near-perfect balance of the whole clusters gives them tremendous appeal, even at this very early stage. Bize-Leroy opted ... Read More »

According to importer David Milligan: "Slow and natural fermentation. Fermentation and blending of this wine are 100% French oak cask (with 15% new oak). The barrel aging, on the lees, for about 12 months allows them to obtain a fine wine, complex with beautiful richness. Exceptionally rich with subtle honey accents and notes of grilled nuts balanced by fresh peaches. Long on the finish."

(AM)" (6/2015) Jancis Robinson: "Bottled September 2013. Two parcels, from St Aubin and Puligny. Lusher on the nose than most. Correct with real chalky chew and life and interest. Juicy. Quite long." 2013 Jacques Bavard St-Romain Blanc (Previously $28)

The Last of the 2013! From a tiny negociant producer in Puligny-Montrachet that we found by chance during a buying trip in Burgundy, and have been carrying since the 2008 vintage. Wonderfully affordable Burgundy, and a staff favorite that is sure to sell out at a brisk pace. The St-Romaine Blanc comes from Sous la Velle and Sous la Chateau, two of the best sites in Saint Romaine, a village with a cool climate and rocky soils.

2014 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Les Sétilles"

Wine & Spirits: "Warm and leesy, this has the textural weight and body of a Rhône wine and some musky green flavors. Serve it well chilled with boudin blanc." (4/2016) K&L Notes: Olivier Leflaive primarily makes Les Sétilles from vineyards at the foot of the slope in Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault with an average vine age of 40 years. Grapes are carfully sorted in the cellar and typically more than 2/3 of the harvest is aged in barrel (around 10% new) with the balance of the wine aged in tanks. The result is a white Burgundy that showcases freshness, texture, and a purity of mine... Read More »

2014 Domaine Paul Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Canet"

89-92 points Vinous: "(from the Clos de la Jacquelotte; the crop level here was just 30 hectoliters per hectare): Pale yellow-green. Aromas of peach, nut oil and hazelnut are quite Meursault-like, but this clos is actually not in the part of Champ Canet that's adjacent to Meursault. Rich, fat and sweet if a bit unrefined on the palate, showing exotic notes of lichee and banana today. Finishes with adequate acidity but one feels the 13.5+% alcohol. Pernot noted that Jacques Carillon is the only other owner of vines in this clos. (ST)" (9/2015) K&L Notes: Stephen Tanzer on Pernot's 2014 vin... Read More »

2013 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet Village, which sees around 15% new oak, has a fragrant bouquet: apple blossom, touches of peach and yellow plum, quite complex for a village cru. The palate is fresh and malic on the entry with a keen line of acidity. Linear and correct with a slightly abrupt but delineated finish. Very fine." (12/2014) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(in tank): Bright, light yellow. Rather subdued aromas of lemon, grapefruit and white flowers. (ST)" (9/2015) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a crisp, stony, Granny Smith apple-scented bouquet that is tightly wound, but you have to admire the mineralité conveyed here considering that this is a village cru. That said the growing season was frankly tough and while we weren't hit by hail the way we were in 2012, it still required some serious attention to detail. It has a terse, almost Puligny-like bouquet driven by its stony limestone soils. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity. There are abundant, spice-tinged citrus fruit laced with grilled walnut and a lovely fume finish that lingers in the mouth. This has real class and should drink well over the next decade. While Boudriotte is typically finer than the typical Morgeot, this is markedly finer. Recommended." The nose is quite reduced at first and demands coaxing, but eventually reveals light pear and linden notes with aeration, although the oak needs to be more fully integrated by the time of bottling. The palate is nicely balanced with simple, crisp green apple, pear and citrus peel notes, rendering a straight-down-the-line, orthodox Puligny for early drinking.
