2015 Bernier Chardonnay Val de Loire Top Pick!
2015 Bernier Chardonnay Val de Loire

This Chardonnay is produced by the three brothers Couillaud at the Château de la Ragotière, a few minutes from the Atlantic near the mouth of the Loire River, where the maritime climate is ideal for producing whites that are refreshing and bright. The Couillauds age most of this wine on its lees until bottling to add weight and texture with around 10% being barrel-fermented in French oak for the faintest touch of toastiness. Saveur magazine wrote about a previous vintage: "This value-priced Chardonnay tastes crisp and bright. It comes from the western Lo... Read More »

2016 Domaine des Côtes Blanches Sancerre

90 points Wine Spectator: "A tangy, herb-infused version, with lots of thyme and chive notes and hints of asparagus and fleur de sel. Offers a brisk, bony finish. (JM)" (7/2017) K&L Notes: Domaine Côtes Blanches was first established back in the 1930s by Bernard & Pierre Millet. In 1980 it was time for the second generation to take the reins, so François & Monique expanded the estate to 21 hectares of vines (15 Sauvignon, 6 Pinot Noir). After returning from his studies in Beaune five years ago, Nicolas (son of François & Monique) joined the family-run estate and brought a new energized passion... Read More »

Grown in an area located between the Loire River and the Cher River and sandwiched between the towns of Tours and Blois, the wine shows the classic characteristics of the rich clay soils that are fortified with flint and limestone. 2016 Domaine Cherrier Père & Fils Sancerre

This winery was founded in 1930 and since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The estate has limestone and calcarous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky mineral and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."

I first met vigneron Jean-Noël Millon while attending an organic wine fair in the South of France. The wines were impressive, so we arranged to meet on my trip through the Loire a couple of months later. A visit to the winery led to a trip through the ancient cellar, which had been carved from the chalky stone (known as tuffeau) below two centuries before. As we progressed from chamber to chamber, it began to feel more a like a spelunking expedition. There is perhaps no better match for a dozen oysters than minerally Sancerre from one of the best producers in the region. Hippolyte Reverdy's family has been making wine in the charming village of Verdigny, a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire, for many generations--perhaps as far back as 1600.
