2016 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling Mosel

94 points James Suckling: "Super-cool and super-delicate wine with great depth and wonderful balance. A blast of freshness that makes most white wines seem like yesterday's news. Should be exciting at least until 2030." (6/2017) 90 points Vinous: "The nose is a bit shrouded by yeasty fermentative notes but opens to reveal scents of ripe pear garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope. This displays a bit less clarity and refreshment than the corresponding Schlossberg but shows compensatory creamy textural allure and soothing, subtly sweet persistence; pear seed and lime zest offer stimulating counterpoin ...Read More »

Gaffel Kölsch, Germany (12oz)

The laws protecting the brewing of Kolsch are as strict as Germany's Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch Beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known Kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered," or aged in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale and faintly fruity with a crisp hop finish. The city of Cologne (or Koln) is located on the Rhine River and north of Munich. In Koln, Germany's third largest city, Kolsch beer is nearly the only beer people drink. Gaffel Kolsch is the town favorite.

Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Gin (375ml)

The story of Monkey 47 gin is romantic: in 1951, a British man named Montgomery Collins moved to Germany's Black Forest and opened a guesthouse named "Zum wilden Affen"--the wild monkey. Now considered a renowned gin drinker, Collins's taste for the spirit was unknown until renovation work at the country guesthouse led to the discovery of a weighty old wooden box containing a bottle and a letter. The dusty bottle had been labeled and decorated by hand, showing a sketch of a monkey and the words "Max the Monkey--Schwarzwald Dry Gin." The accompanying lett... Read More »

2015 Reichsrat von Buhl "Bone Dry" Riesling Pfalz

Winery Notes: "We at Reichsrat von Buhl rely on dry wines. On really dry wines. Dry in German wine regulations can be up to 9g/L of residual sugar. And that is not dry. Or not dry enough. At least not for us. With us is "dry" between 0 and 4g residual sugar. But on the bottle, the law is to just put "dry" on it. Therefore, we have considered visualizing our type of dry, namely bone-dry, and especially on the label. The next consideration was to integrate the respective wine aromas visually into the skull, which stands for "bochentrocken". Et voilà - von ... Read More »

2016 Weingut Fürst Elbling Mosel (1L)

Fürst makes this easy-going white to be delightful as a picinic wine or aperitif. It is made in a feinherb style which means it's a whisker off-dry, but to be honest doesn't show any notable sweetness at all. Elbling is a historic vinifera grape varietal that was cultivated primarily in the Mosel Valley since Roman times and eventually spread to dominate the extensive plantings of medieval Germany. Very few producers are left making wines from this varietal but Fürst take theirs very seriously and this is a fantastic bottle of wine. Ultimately quaffable,... Read More »

2016 Leitz "Dragonstone" Riesling Rheingau

Importer's Notes: "Extraordinarily aromatic, vigorous wines from a vintner who grows more commanding each vintage. This is the wine that once was called Rüdesheimer Drachenstein, and it’s the wine David Schildknecht said was the best Riesling value in the world, which is because Johannes sells it to us for much less than it’s worth. For a larger production wine this receives the same care in the vineyards and cellar that every Leitz wine receives."

Reissdorf Kölsch, Germany (500ml)

Very German--and very delicious! This beer is a pale yellow, with a thick white head and great lacing. Yeasty and malty, but still refreshing and laden with light, citrus notes. The Reissdorf is a malty beer that is light on body but not on flavor.

2013 Friedrich Becker Estate Pinot Noir Pfalz

Coming from one of the top producers of Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) this "entry level" Pinot is a spicy treat. With the chalky soils in the area, Becker produces some of Germany's finest Pinot Noir. Full of spicy strawberry and bright cherry fruit, just a hint of tobacco and a dusty earthiness and layers of subtle textures tell you that you paid way too little for this offering. Delicious on its own, but also complements heavier seafood, poultry and fine cuts of beef or game.

2016 Leitz "Eins Zwei Dry" Riesling Trocken (Dry) Rheingau

90 points James Suckling: "Very attractive white peach and citrus aromas. Juicy and elegant with spot-on balance and a long, almost silky finish. An ideal dry Riesling for everyday drinking! Best now or in 2018." (8/2017) Wine & Spirits: "Tangy, lean and fresh, this practically sparkles with mineral tones, a tonic-and-lime without the sweetness or bubbles. But that sounds austere, and this wine isn’t: It has enough extract to give it body, a roundness that would complement a coconut-milk fish curry." (2/2018) K&L Notes: Importer's Notes: "A wonderfully dry, but not mouth-searing, style of Riesling for those who ... Read More »

2015 von Winning "Winnings" Riesling Pfalz

90 points Vinous: "This represents the second installment of a diversely sourced blend, mostly from Forst, assembled by Von Winning importer Terry Theise and his old friend, legendary cellarmaster, and Von Winning team spiritual mentor Hans-Günther Schwarz. As with Theise's collaborative Gutsriesling from Schwarz's long-time haunts at Müller-Catoir, tasting (and drinking!) this Riesling is a delight, but simultaneously saddens me to think that it is among only two in the Von Winning portfolio (at Müller-Catoir, it's the only one) to exhibit anything remotely like its hidde ...Read More »

2016 Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken Nahe

However, this too has a crisp long finish of some complexity. Drink or hold. Made from organic grapes and Fair'n Green certified." (11/2017) 91 points Wine Spectator: "The ripe apple, guava and spice flavors mingle in the core of this focused Riesling. Silky in texture, with savory mineral accents on the finish. Braupakt Hefe Weizen is deliciously drinkable, showcasing both Weihenstephan's brewing prowess through their signature yeast and Sierra Nevada's proclivity for big hop flavor (Amarillo and Chinook). Fleshy black cherry and berry flavors are ripe, but are offset by crisp acidity and a shroud of smoke and toast that accents without overwhelming. It's bold and penetrating, with a long finish marked by fine, persistent tannins. Drink any time between now and 2030." (6/2017) 91 points Vinous: "On the nose, this displays sea breeze and sweaty salinity, anticipating the savory mineral and animal aspects that follow on a buoyant palate brimming with juicy fresh apple. Jancis Robinson: "Quite rich and savoury - definitely not in the floral spectrum that I suspect some would expect of a Riesling. Bone dry - very much for the German market! Naked and unadorned. Pungent and well made but definitely for the converted? (JR)" (5/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Riesling Trocken (named 'Just Riesling' in Germany) is based on the youngest vines of the domaine and reflects the purity and crystallinity of the Gut Hermannsberg terroirs, which are only located in grands crus. 2016 Carl Loewen Longuicher Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Mosel

90 points Vinous: "From vines planted in 1902, this leads with a fetching nose of fresh apple and lightly cooked strawberry tinged with fennel. The fruit is adeptly supported by sweetness on a silken palate. Relatively low residual sugar by currently prevailing standards makes for slightly higher alcohol (at 9%) than one usually encounters in today’s sweet Kabinetts, but, almost needless to say, 9% allows for a delightful sense of levity. The luscious finish is mouthwateringly salt-tinged and vividly underlain with classic wet stone. (DS)" (1/2018) K&L Notes: Ungrafted vines planted in... Read More »

Sweet, lush and intense, this is a concentrated, already densely textured Spätlese with a firm mineral grip and tension that gives this 2015 unreal aging potential and great complexity. It grows on a group of steep slate vineyards next-door to the Rieslings, and shows literally fantastic fruit and twangy slate; elegant and limpid. The sweetness here is totally supportive and entirely discreet. This is one of those Kabinetts one seems to inhale in the finish, with floral perfume and wet stone prominent, and only sheer refreshment reminds you of its fluid nature. This finishes with the remarkable balance of which its genre is so famously capable, its sweetness solely supportive, even though on paper it looks excessive. The wine opens pure, flinty and with yeasty aromas whereas any fruit flavors were still closed and rather vegetal (without being green or unripe of course). (JR)" (6/2016) K&L Notes: Just upstream from the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the Graacher Himmelreich. With deeper, richer soils, this site is a little less steep and its southwest exposure ensures the wines from this site always have a racy and juicy acid background that really make the wines sing.
