2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Mosel (Pre-Arrival)

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is, without question, the most famous of vineyard sites within the Prüm Estate if not all of the Mosel Valley. With its south-southwest exposure, weathered grey slate and ridiculous steepness (up to 70%) it provides an optimal growing climate for Riesling. The wines from here show fantastic depth of stone fruit flavors accompanied by a fine line of minerality and length. From the cellar of J.J. Prüm, this is a perennially classic, collectible Riesling.

2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Mosel (Pre-Arrival)

Jancis Robinson: "Quite restrained on the nose, but with a successful combination of juicy pear, animating acidity and subtle minerality on the palate. Appealing Kabinett that does not rely on sweetness as its sole virtue. (JR)" (6/2016) K&L Notes: Just upstream from the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the Graacher Himmelreich. With deeper, richer soils, this site is a little less steep and its south-west exposure ensures the wines from this site always have a racy and juicy acid background that really makes them sing. 2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett Mosel (Pre-Arrival)

For centuries the Prüm family has called the village of Wehlen home. Their ancestors were living in or near Wehlen as early as the year 1156. The Prüm estate as we know it today began with Sebastian Alois Prüm. His brother Jodocus constructed both of the famous Wehlener and Zeltinger sundials (Sonnenuhr). Of his six sons only Mathais married. Johann Josef Prüm (1873 - 1944), the son of Mathias, founded the J.J. Prüm estate in 1911. His grandson, Dr. Manfred Prüm, leads the estate and continues the legacy. Today, the very long lived wines of J.J. Prüm hav... Read More »

2015 Mönchhof Estate Riesling Mosel

The Mönchhof estate dates at least as far back as the 12th century, as evidenced by a document still in the Eymael family's possession, signed by Pope Alexander III, showing the Cloister Himmerod--a Cistercian Abbey--having vineyard holdings in Urzig as early as 1177. And the wines have been popular for a long time, too. At the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, Mönchhof won medals for their wines. These days, the wines reflect the personality of the estate's proprietor Robert Eymael: easy to like, with a sense of style and simple sophistication.

2002 C.H. Berres Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese

I love the 2002 vintage in Germany - completely overshadowed by the 2001's and 2003's. For me, it was a perfect vintage with fresh aromatics, fruit textures and delicate acidities. This bottling is also drinking absolutely perfect. From the famed Treppchen vineyard this shows wonderful spice on the nose with notable spice and texture. Again, this wine is drinking much like its little Kabinett sibling, spot on. The color is absolutely perfect while the palate is alive and dancing. C.H. Berres: since 1510. 1510!!! 2015 Peter Lauer "Barrel X" Riesling Mosel (Saar)

Peter Lauer and his sons Peter and Florian are the proprietors of a tiny little hotel and restaurant in the village of Ayl, on the west side of the Saar River. Their winery is located next door to the hotel, and it seems as though many of the guests leave with a case or two of wine. This is how Weingut Peter Lauer subsisted for many generations. But now Lauer has garnered something of a cult following, and if you haven't tried one of their dry or off-dry Rieslings, you are truly missing out. The Barrel X is the winery's entry level offering, but it's so ... Read More »

2014 Maximin Grünhauser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Mosel (Ruwer)

A kiss of honey gives the midpalate just a touch of sweetness that lingers long on the finish. (AI)" (6/2016) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett offers a super clear and well focused bouquet of white peach and mirabelle plum aromas...Very light and elegant on the palate, this is filigreed Riesling with a charming sweetness and fruit that is very attractive for the masses, whereas Rie ...Read More »

2014 Selbach Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * Mosel

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * displays a pretty "Bugundian" bouquet with some discreet new oak aromas framing the ripe and fine Riesling flavors. However, this is another style at the first sight, but the complexity, purity and finesse are also evident and will come out even better in 6-8 years. This is a very elegant, long and refined Spätlese with a very fine tannin structure and a long, pure finish. This wine is great with food. (SR)" (3/2016)

2014 Gessinger "Josefsberg Old Vines" Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese ** Mosel

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "While shades of slate and saffron lend complexity and nuance, this semisweet wine is more a showcase of sumptuous yellow peach and pear flavors. Its high-toned acidity and delicate, lacy mouthfeel make it irresistibly gulpable. (ALCI)" (6/2016) Jancis Robinson: "No producer likes to be labelled predictable, but over the years I have come to the conclusion that traditional Spätlese is the Gessingers’ true forte. 2015 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Estate Riesling (Feinherb) Mosel

If you haven't had the wines from this estate you should. They are classy, elegant, and don't try to beat you into submission by being anything they are not. The estate wine from Dr. F. Weins-Prüm is feinherb in style. What does that mean? Basically, it is a wine that is dry, but with just a touch fruitiness to it that makes it an easygoing, quaffable wine for everyday use. This particular one is loaded with crisp apple and ripe peach, with rounded-out minerality and a juicy finish. Before you know it, the bottle will be empty. It's a good wine any time ... 2014 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Mosel

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Spicy, clear and herbal, with stony and slightly tropical, nicely concentrated fruit flavors, the 2014 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett has remarkable finesse; it comes along as a very clear, straight, piquant and mineral, firmly structured and rather medium-dry tasting Kabinett. The wine has a long and intensely fruity, as well as salty and piquant finish. This is excellent Kabinett with terroir expression, although it was bottled with 45 grams of unfermented sugar (9% alcohol). (SR)" (3/2016)

2001 Bollig-Lehnert Dhroner Hofberger Riesling Auslese Mosel

About the producer: "We are very fortunate to be owners of some of the very best Vineyards on this part of the Mosel valley. Handed down from generation to generation the Bollig & Lehnert-Matheus families were indeed able to produce, even as far back as a hundred & fifty years ago first-class wines from many choice wine-growing areas. Each Wine-Growing area has of course its own TOTALLY individual character! – this is due to the elementary and distinct differences in the soil – which in turn provides each wine with its own characteristic flavour."

(KM, Web-2016)" Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp apple and pears are streaked with earthy tones of saffron and bramble in this brisk invigorating Spätlese. It's concentrated and fruity on the palate with a clingy honeyed touch that extends the finish. Straight, juicy and salty-mineral on the palate, this firmly structured wine reveals a great purity and intensity and is a fascinating "dry“ (please accept 15 grams of residual sugar here as trocken) interpretation Goldtröpfchen and I almost can’t stop drinking it. The Erdener Prälat is often regarded as one of the top vineyard sites in the Mosel. It sits right on top of the river with steep vertical angles and a perfect southern exposure. It is a relatively small vineyard with only a handful of producers laying claim to it. Being so small and steep, and with the red slate soils retaining the day's heat, you will rarely see anything but Spätlese or higher from here--typically Auslese or higher.
