2013 Yves Duport "Origin'L Reserve" Bugey Brut (Previously $17) Top Pick!
2013 Yves Duport "Origin'L Reserve" Bugey Brut (Previously $17)

Yves Duport is based in the town of Groslee, one of the villages located in the not-so-well-known appellation of Bugey. Bugey is just to the west of the Savoie, France's alpine region and shares many similarities with the wines of that region. It is also quite close to Burgundy and many of the influences of that region are also felt. Yves grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Mondeuse and Altesse.

2013 Yves Duport Mondeuse "Terre Brune" Bugey (Previously $18)

From a small appellation dramatically framed by the Alps and an idiosyncratic grape called Mondeuse, this wine is eccentric, complex, and absolutely delicious. From the winery: "Purple in colour, with complex summer fruits, blackcurrant, spices, and empyreumatic [AKA smokey caramel] nose. Its structure asserts itself with supple and silky tannins in the mouth. Racy, it asserts its personality. It can be kept for ten years."

Patrick Bottex "La Cueille" Bugey Cerdon Rosé (Méthode Ancéstrale)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dry, crisp, fresh and incredibly fragrant, this sparkling wine is a terrific bargain. The good news is there are around 4,000 cases of it, although I do not know how much is imported by Kermit Lynch ... This cuvee may qualify as the 'wine bargain of the year.' A Champagne-like sparkling rose from the largely forgotten area of Bugey (which only received appellation status in 2009), this low alcohol (8%) offering is made from 90% Gamay and 10% Poulsard (an indigenous grape of the region). (RP)" (2/2012) K&L Notes: According to the L.A. Times: "Ever so slightly sweet, i... Read More »

2014 Veronique Anne Perret Vin de Savoie Apremont (Previously $15)

The village of Apremont once sat in the shadow of a great mountain. In 1248 that mountain collapsed destroying everything in its path. Apremont means "bitter mountain" taking its name from the tragic event that occurred. Now, the mountain itself was made of limestone which is some of the best geological material for growing grapes. The site is littered with limestone scree (broken rock fragments). The grape of choice for the region is Jacquere and some of the best comes from this village. Like most wines from Savoie, the Perret has the hallmark aro... Read More »

Caveau du Mont July Bugey Cerdon Rosé

Spontaneous fermentation - an altogether preferable scenario to spontaneous combustion, and A LOT more fun to drink. This pink, semi-dry bubbly was made by spontaneous fermentation, otherwise known as méthode ancestrale. Grapes are picked by hand (the local Poulsard and Gamay grown on mountainous slopes in the shadow of the Alps) and fermented in chilled vats just reaching 5 or 6 degrees alcohol. The young and light wine is then bottled, along with its active yeast and considerable unfermented sugar. Under pressure of the cork, the wine continues to ferm... Read More »

2014 Domaine Dugois Ploussard Arbois Rouge

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyards and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. 2014 Veronique Anne Perret Roussette de Savoie (Previously $17)

Roussette de Savoie is not the easiest appellation to describe as it encompasses vast parts of the region of Savoie. The most important thing to remember is that these are usually some of the best sites and they are 100% Altesse (aka Roussette). Altesse is a grape that seems to have more in common with Chenin Blanc rather than the local Jacquere. It is loaded with vibrant citrus notes and Mandarin orange qualities. It is distinctly mineral driven as well. The Perret is largely from the Marestel region which is perhaps THE best growing region for Alt... Read More »

2014 Domaine de l'Aigle À Deux Têtes Côtes du Jura Rouge

From the importer: "Henri Le Roy farms a few tiny parcels of vineyards in the Cotes du Jura – an area just west of the Swiss border and Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), and just east of Burgundy. He’s an intense man – driven, and smart. In fact, his original career was as a Biologist, in Paris. He was drawn to the Jura by its incredible terroir, with ancient stones and seashells from its Jurassic period namesake. He’s pretty new at this – his first vintage was 2005 – but the results speak for themselves. Unlike many of his counterparts in Jura, he abhors oxidati... Read More »

2013 Domaine André & Mireille Tissot Chardonnay "Les Graviers" Arbois Blanc

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Arbois Chardonnay les Graviers is a Chardonnay selection from chalky soils. Chalk behaved quite well in a rainy vintage like 2013. There is a combination of yeasty and wet chalk aromas; it is elegant, serious and with depth. This is all old vines. It is a serious wine with plenty of lees and soil reminiscences. The texture is different, finer here, more elegant and there’s an electric feeling to this. This is a great Chardonnay. (LG)" (10/2015) 92 points Vinous: "Bright yellow. 2014 Domaine André & Mireille Tissot "DD" Arbois Rouge (Sans Soufré)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first red was the 2014 Arbois Rouge DD, produced with one third each of the red grapes form Jura, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir; it's his light red wine with no sulfur. It was bottled one month before I tasted it in April 2015, after three months of maceration. It has an organic nose that mixes blood oranges and sour cherries. The palate is sharp and a little edgy, but it is easy to drink. 2010 was the first vintage for this wine. (LG)" (10/2015) Vinous: "Deep ruby. Animated bouquet evokes raspberry, anise and violet. 2011 Domaine Dugois Savagnin Arbois Blanc (Sous Voile)

Jancis Robinson: "100% Savagnin. Oxidative. Three and a half years’ ageing without topping up. Pungently if lightly oxidised on the nose. Not heavy at all. Not a bad price for a wine with this much character. Quince and lots to chew on." 2014 Xavier Reverchon Chardonnay "Les Trouillots" Cotes du Jura Blanc

From Clive Coates: "Xavier Reverchon's grandfather founded the domaine about a century ago. There is a little Arbois, but the majority of vines, biologically tended, are for Côtes du Jura. There are reds from both Poulsard and Pinot Noir and a clean, vigorous Chardonnay. The vin jaune is very good indeed." (An Encyclopedia of the Wines and Domaines of France)

Domaine Overnoy-Crinquand Crémant du Jura Brut Rosé

From importer Neal Rosenthal: "Crinquand uses fruit from the younger vines of Ploussard to make his sparkling wine. Although the vintage is not indicated on the label, Crinquand’s Crémant is vintage specific, all the juice being from a single harvest. The Crémant from this estate is bone-dry 'brut zero' (no dosage). On the palate one senses a hint of tannin, a strong underlying earthiness … its 'terroir' and an ebullient raspberry fruit in both flavor and on the nose."

2014 Domaine du Pelican Chardonnay Arbois Blanc

Though the 2014 has yet to be professionally reviewed, the 2013 earned 90 points and praise from the Wine Advocate: "The bunches for the 2013 Arbois Chardonnay were pressed directly and the must fermented in barrel, where it also aged for one year. Only 10% of the barrels are new here. The oak is very well integrated; it's a pure style of white, you can say it’s a Burgundy style, but it certainly has fresher acidity and the oak does not add that much creaminess. The wine has more tension and purity. A noteworthy Chardonnay... Domaine du Pélican is the na... Read More »

Entonnage dry cellar, characterized by differences in seasonal temperatures for 6 years and 3 months minimum, without topping. slow and precise oxidation of the wine protected by a veil of yeast. From the Wine Makers: "With a longer than the previous aging, Savagnin reinforces the power and bouquet typical of the Jura and melds perfectly with the Chardonnay. The wine is very ethereal with a fine bouquet. Aromas of dried fruit, hazelnuts, walnuts and green almond waft from your glass."

2014 Domaine de Saint Pierre Chardonnay "Chateau Renard" Arbois Blanc

Lettie Teague writes of the Jura: "Sandwiched between Switzerland and Burgundy on France’s far eastern edge, Jura is not only the smallest wine region in France but also quite remote. Perhaps that’s why its producers still work according to winemaking traditions that are decades, even centuries, old. It’s a region said to be almost untouched by the outside world, save perhaps for the occasional appearance of a besotted sommelier. The range of wines produced in Jura is remarkably wide for a region its size. There are red, white, sparkling and dessert win... Read More »

Apart from that, the process is the same as for the Chardonnay: the whole bunches are pressed and the must fermented in the barrels where it also matured for about one year. The nose is very clean, with aromas of white fruit and some nuts and spices. It is quite elegant and fresh. Savagnin is a grape that has a little bit of tannins, which ar... Read More »

Domaine de Montbourgeau Macvin du Jura
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of Domaine de Montbourgeau Macvin du Jura (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Macvin is a mistelle again, pure Chardonnay. What I tasted is a single vintage wine, but the vintage is not shown on the label. This NV Macvin du Jura from Montbourgeau can have some 200-220 grams of residual sugar, as the must didn’t ferment and was just fortified to 17% alcohol. The marc is aged for three years in barrels. The combination of fresh must and the aged marc is unique and easily identifiable. Once you smell it, you will recognize it forever, and it might be an acquired taste -- think of an oak aged grappa mixed with white grape must (it could also be red) and there you are. This is a wine used as an aperitif in the Jura, sometimes with some cheese. It’s quite sweet and could be quite dangerous, if you drink a lot of it, especially in the sun; you might need to go for a siesta! (LG)" (10/2015)

1993 Caves Jean Bourdy Côtes du Jura Rouge

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Wines from Jean-Francois Bourdy's small cellar in Arlay have been trickling into the world’s wine markets with increasing regularity over the past decade (though there is a history of these wines in the U.S. even before World War II), causing considerable waves, an American fan club having accumulated, with buzz centering understandably around the Bourdys' huge assortment of vintages spanning well more than a century. What I tasted on the occasion of my November visit, however, was (with one memorable, antique exception) a small collection constituting t ...Read More »
