2012 Domaine de Montbourgeau "Cuvée Speciale" l'Etoile

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 L'Etoile Cuvée Spéciale is like a mini Vin Jaune, a riper year than 2013, with more volume in the palate and a stronger effect of the aging under the veil of yeasts. It aged for no less than four years under the veil of saccharomyces yeasts. It has pungent, penetrating notes of morel mushrooms and nuts in an elegant, mineral style that is the signature at Montbourgeau. It has a very dry palate with a chalky sensation. This is really very good. Surprisingly enough, this is 100% Chardonnay and aged in an oxidative way. It does have the roundness a ...Read More »

2014 Domaine de Montbourgeau "En Banode" l'Etoile

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was particularly keen on the 2014 L'Etoile En Banode, which is a 50/50 field blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin planted in 1970 by Nicole's father, picked together and fermented together. En Banode is the name of the vineyard. The idea of Nicole’s father was that by fermenting together, he’d preserve more of the character of the soil, which is not the usual procedure, because in Jura the tradition was to always harvest and ferment Chardonnay and Savagnin separately. This is dry, with tension, and it has a lot of character with depth and pungent flavors, ...Read More »

Patrick Bottex "La Cueille" Bugey Cerdon Rosé (Méthode Ancéstrale)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dry, crisp, fresh and incredibly fragrant, this sparkling wine is a terrific bargain. The good news is there are around 4,000 cases of it, although I do not know how much is imported by Kermit Lynch ... This cuvee may qualify as the 'wine bargain of the year.' A Champagne-like sparkling rose from the largely forgotten area of Bugey (which only received appellation status in 2009), this low alcohol (8%) offering is made from 90% Gamay and 10% Poulsard (an indigenous grape of the region). (RP)" (2/2012) K&L Notes: According to the L.A. Times: "Ever so slightly sweet, i... Read More »

2015 Yves Duport "Origin'L Reserve" Bugey Brut (Previously $17)

Yves Duport is a fourth generation winemaker based in the town of Groslee, one of the villages located in the not-so-well-known appellation of Bugey. Bugey lies to the west of Savoie, France's alpine region, of which it shares many similarities. The region is also quite close to Burgundy and Beaujolais, so many of their influences are felt as well. The classic grape varieties from both regions are planted throughout Bugey including Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Altesse and Mondeuse. The region itself is most famous for its Bugey-Cerdon, a slightly sweet... Read More »

2010 Domaine de Montbourgeau Vin Jaune de l'Etoile (620ml)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 L'Etoile Vin Jaune is a super elegant version of the Savagnin aged under a veil of yeasts for no less than six full years and whatever remains of the year when the grapes were harvested. It has a great nose, consistent with what I expected from a great year, though it was recently bottled and showed a little closed, subtle and insinuating, elegant and serious, with some strictness. It has great purity of flavors, great length and a mineral, almost salty finish. There is great complexity and detail in the nose, slowly developing aromas reminiscen ...Read More »

2016 Le Cellier du Palais Vin de Savoie Apremont

Le Cellier du Palais is situated on a property that has been in the Bernard family since 1700. The domaine is run by Béatrice Bernard, who recently took over from her father René, who took over from his father (who established the domaine) in 1974. The family grows three grapes on seven hectares in Apremont--Chardonnay, Jacquère and Altesse. This is an incredibly affordable wine from this region from one of the best known crus in the Vin de Savoie appellation made entirely from Jacquère. It's clean and citrusy, with soft minerality and plenty of acidity.... Read More »

Jean Bourdy Cremant du Jura Brut Rosé

Wines from Jean-Francois Bourdy’s small cellar in Arlay have been trickling into the world’s wine markets with increasing regularity over the past decade (though there is a history of these wines in the U.S. even before World War II), causing considerable waves, an American fan club having accumulated, with buzz centering understandably around the Bourdys’ huge assortment of vintages spanning well more than a century. Bourdy's whites and reds are aged for a minimum of four years in cask before release. Rosé cremant is rare in Jura. Bourdy's is made exclu... Read More »

2017 Veronique Anne Perret Vin de Savoie Apremont

The village of Apremont once sat in the shadow of a great mountain. In 1248 that mountain collapsed, destroying, everything in its path. Fortunately, the mountain itself was made of limestone which is some of the best geological material for growing grapes and the site is littered with limestone scree (broken rock fragments). The grape of choice for the region is Jacquère and some of the best comes from this village. Like most wines from Savoie, the Perret has hallmark aromas of citrus and lemongrass with a touch of peach as well. Where it really excels ... Read More »

2016 Domaine Dugois Ploussard "La Sombarde" Arbois Rouge

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyards and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. 2009 Domaine Baud Vin Jaune Château-Chalon (620ml)

Domaine Baud's flagship wine. A powerful, deeply golden elixir with intriguing notes of hazelnuts, almonds, truffle and curry. This shows finesse and elegance in spades, thanks to the very special blue marl soil in which it is grown and careful cultivation. The wines of Château Chalon must be made in the vin jaune style, aging for six years in barrel, which requires a veil of surface yeast to develop. This style of winemaking lends the wine its hallmark characteristics.

Domaine de la Beliere Bugey Cerdon Rosé (Previously $17)

Spontaneous fermentation - an altogether preferable scenario to spontaneous combustion, and A LOT more fun to drink. This pink, semi-dry bubbly was made by spontaneous fermentation, otherwise known as méthode ancestrale. Grapes are picked by hand (the local Poulsard and Gamay grown on mountainous slopes in the shadow of the Alps) and fermented in chilled vats just reaching 5 or 6 degrees alcohol. The young and light wine is then bottled, along with its active yeast and considerable unfermented sugar. Under pressure of the cork, the wine continues to ferm... Read More »

Domaine Baud "Cuvée Sauvage" Brut Cremant du Jura

Delicately effervescent, this blend of 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay was grown in mainly marl-limestone soils and farmed sustainably (Domaine Baud is certified by Terras Vitis). The winemaker took utmost care to preserve the quality and flavors of the fruit: grapes were harvested manually and gently pressed, dosage was kept to a bare minimum. What resulted is an ode to elegance: pale yellow with silvery green flecks and a very fine mousse, with aromas of grilled green apples, tangerines and wild flowers. On the palate it is supple, finishing with a b... Read More »

Producer notes: "The Savagnin grape variety is exclusive to the Jura region, and gives, after 4 or 5 years in small barrels, a white wine more perfumed and powerful than the Côtes du Jura white. Open 3 to 4 hours before drinking, and serve at a temperature of 16 degrees with the same dishes as you would serve with a Vin Jaune. Can be kept for many years."

2013 Domaine Dugois Savagnin Arbois Blanc (Sous Voile)

That gives a wine that's at once nutty and fruity, with a yeasty, bready character, dried fruit notes and intense acidity. Drink now and until 2021. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. 2010 Domaine Baud Vin Jaune Còtes du Jura (620ml)

92 points Decanter: "Full gold in colour, with a creamy, lemony scent in which bready aldehyde notes are more than usually apparent. There’s a typical Côtes du Jura acidic nerviness to this Vin Jaune, and an almost saline edge; you might also recall bread and seaweed. The palate finishes with unexpected warmth and richness, and some apricot fruit notes. Concentrated and complex." (3/2018)
