2016 Veronique Anne Perret Vin de Savoie Apremont Top Pick!
2016 Veronique Anne Perret Vin de Savoie Apremont

The village of Apremont once sat in the shadow of a great mountain. In 1248 that mountain collapsed, destroying, everything in its path. Fortunately, the mountain itself was made of limestone which is some of the best geological material for growing grapes and the site is littered with limestone scree (broken rock fragments). The grape of choice for the region is Jacquère and some of the best comes from this village. Like most wines from Savoie, the Perret has hallmark aromas of citrus and lemongrass with a touch of peach as well. Where it really excels ... Read More »

2014 Domaine Baud Chardonnay l'Etoile Blanc

Tucked in between Burgundy and Switzerland lies the region of Jura. The wines of the Jura should have a place on everyone’s table, not simply those in the know. Thanks to our new direct relationship with Domaine Baud, we can offer some of the great wines of the Jura ... Read More »

Patrick Bottex "La Cueille" Bugey Cerdon Rosé (Méthode Ancéstrale)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dry, crisp, fresh and incredibly fragrant, this sparkling wine is a terrific bargain. The good news is there are around 4,000 cases of it, although I do not know how much is imported by Kermit Lynch ... This cuvee may qualify as the 'wine bargain of the year.' A Champagne-like sparkling rose from the largely forgotten area of Bugey (which only received appellation status in 2009), this low alcohol (8%) offering is made from 90% Gamay and 10% Poulsard (an indigenous grape of the region). (RP)" (2/2012) K&L Notes: According to the L.A. Times: "Ever so slightly sweet, i... Read More »

Domaine Baud "Cuvée Sauvage" Brut Cremant du Jura

Delicately effervescent, this blend of 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay was grown in mainly marl-limestone soils and farmed sustainably (Domaine Baud is certified by Terras Vitis). The winemaker took utmost care to preserve the quality and flavors of the fruit: grapes were harvested manually and gently pressed, dosage was kept to a bare minimum. What resulted is an ode to elegance: pale yellow with silvery green flecks and a very fine mousse, with aromas of grilled green apples, tangerines and wild flowers. On the palate it is supple, finishing with a b... Read More »

2014 Domaine Dugois Chardonnay Arbois Blanc (Previously $16)

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines... Read More »

2014 Domaine de l'Aigle À Deux Têtes Côtes du Jura Rouge

From the importer: "Henri Le Roy farms a few tiny parcels of vineyards in the Cotes du Jura – an area just west of the Swiss border and Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), and just east of Burgundy. He’s an intense man – driven, and smart. In fact, his original career was as a Biologist, in Paris. He was drawn to the Jura by its incredible terroir, with ancient stones and seashells from its Jurassic period namesake. He’s pretty new at this – his first vintage was 2005 – but the results speak for themselves. Unlike many of his counterparts in Jura, he abhors oxidati... Read More »

Domaine de la Beliere Bugey Cerdon Rosé

Spontaneous fermentation - an altogether preferable scenario to spontaneous combustion, and A LOT more fun to drink. This pink, semi-dry bubbly was made by spontaneous fermentation, otherwise known as méthode ancestrale. Grapes are picked by hand (the local Poulsard and Gamay grown on mountainous slopes in the shadow of the Alps) and fermented in chilled vats just reaching 5 or 6 degrees alcohol. The young and light wine is then bottled, along with its active yeast and considerable unfermented sugar. Under pressure of the cork, the wine continues to ferm... Read More »

Benoit cultivates his 10 hectares of vineyards in Poligny with the aim of maintaining a natural ecological balance. 2012 Domaine Dugois Savagnin Arbois Blanc (Sous Voile) (Elsewhere $45)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Very distinctive, with singed Brazil nut aromas imparting a Sherry-like profile before revealing richer apple, melon and pear nuances midpalate. The long finish picks up paraffin, brioche, salted butter and dried lemon rind notes, with everything flowing harmoniously over a dry, nervy underpinning. Drink now through 2022. (JM)" (9/2016)

2015 Angelot Mondeuse Bugey

Maison Angelot is run by the brothers Eric and Philippe Angelot. Their 57 acres of vineyards are divided into about 20 different parcels, some hillside and others along the valley floor. Harvest is both manual and with machine (depending on the parcel), and their modern winery houses temperature-controlled stainless-steel and fiberglass tanks. The Mondeuse is 100% destemmed and fermented through carbonic maceration preserving freshness and brightness delivering a wine similar to a Beaujolais with more spice qualities.

2008 Domaine Baud Vin Jaune Château-Chalon (620ml)

Domaine Baud's flagship wine. A powerful, deeply golden elixir with intriguing notes of hazelnuts, almonds, truffle and curry. This shows finesse and elegance in spades, thanks to the very special blue marl soil in which it is grown and careful cultivation. The wines of Château Chalon must be made in the vin jaune style, aging for six years in barrel, which requires a veil of surface yeast to develop. This style of winemaking lends the wine its hallmark characteristics.

2015 Veronique Anne Perret Roussette de Savoie

Founded in 1927 in the village of Jongieux, the Perret family has worked with many of the same seasoned growers for four generations. Roussette de Savoie is not the easiest appellation to describe as it encompasses vast parts of the region of Savoie. The most important thing to remember is that these are usually some of the best sites and they are 100% Altesse (aka Roussette). Altesse is a grape that seems to have more in common with Chenin Blanc rather than the local Jacquere. It is loaded with vibrant citrus notes and Mandarin orange qualities. It is d... Read More »

2009 Domaine Dugois Vin Jaune Arbois (620ml)

91 points Wine Spectator: "Distinctive, with dry-edged walnut and Brazil nut notes giving this tension, while the core lets persimmon, orange peel and quince details flow through, imparting a sense of contrasting opulence. Flirts with sweetness, but stays dry, showing lovely cut through the finish. Drink now through 2022. (JM)" (9/2016)

2012 Joseph Dorbon "Cuvée des Moyne" Arbois Blanc (Sous Voile) (Previously $32)

Joseph Dorbon was referred to us from our good friend Michel Gahier. Dorbon initiated his work as vigneron in 1996. He works three hectares of vineyards situated in his village of Vadans, six kilometers north of Arbois and across the Route Nationale from the fabled town of Montigny-les-Arsures (where both Gahier and Puffeney are located). The vines are hillside plantings, southeast facing, at approximately 1,000 feet of altitude (322 meters). Dorbon works his vineyards following the best ecological practices and is now recognized as on the path to or... Read More »

2013 Yves Duport "Origin'L Reserve" Bugey Brut RD

Yves Duport is a fourth generation winemaker based in the town of Groslee, one of the villages located in the not-so-well-known appellation of Bugey. Bugey lies to the west of Savoie, France's alpine region, of which it shares many similarities. The region is also quite close to Burgundy and Beaujolais, so many of their influences are felt as well. The classic grape varieties from both regions are planted throughout Bugey including Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Altesse and Mondeuse. The region itself is most famous for its Bugey-Cerdon, a slightly s... Read More »

2009 Domaine Baud Vin Jaune Còtes du Jura (620ml)

Vin Jaune is one of Jura's gifts to the world. Made from the Savagnin grape, it is matured under a thin veil of yeast that gives it a wonderfully nutty, rich flavor. This 2009 bottling from Domain Baud is voluptuous and golden, with hints of hazelnut, truffle and an exotic touch of curry. It is round and full-figured, with structure and balance. Pair it with aged cheeses for a palate symphony!
