2013 Spellbound California Petite Sirah Top Pick!
2013 Spellbound California Petite Sirah

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The real star, and a sleeper selection for sure, is the outstanding 2013 Petite Sirah. This wine has an inky, ruby/purple color, notes of cassis, blueberry, blackberry fruit, incense and camphor. This is a medium to full-bodied beauty to drink over the next 5-6 years, possibly longer. These are excellent wines once again as this winery has appeared frequently in these Best Buy pages. (RP)" (8/2015)

2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah (Previously $30) Top Pick!
2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah (Previously $30)

From the winery: "Rich and dense, the 2013 Brunswick Petite Sirah is a beautiful expression of a world class vineyard. Aromatics of fresh black cherries, blueberry cobbler, and dark chocolate, the wine hits the palate with a rush of accompanying flavors. The wine crosses the mid palate and fills the mouth with balanced acid and tannins to match the wines' density. Enjoy with grilled anything, or on a cool autumn evening on the patio. Pack a toothbrush!"

2013 Ridge "Lytton Estate" Dry Creek Valley Petite Sirah

93 points Vinous: "The 2013 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is oddly enough quite civilized and even a touch tame by Petite standards. There is plenty of inky blue/black-fleshed fruit but the tannins are surprisingly soft. Game, smoke and a hint of tobacco add nuance through the mid-palate and finish. The 2013 is a beautiful wine, but readers expecting a full-on Petite experience might be slightly disappointed, as this is an especially tamed Petite with varietal character that has largely been subdued. Ridge remains one of the finest operations I visit anywhere in the world. T ...Read More »

2013 J. Runquist "Salman Vineyard" Clarksburg Petite Sirah

According to the winery: "The 2013 vintage has a deep purple color that clings to the walls of the glass. Bright aromas of sweet ripe dark fruits; marionberry and boysenberry marry with a bouquet of mocha and hazelnut to create an alluring temptation. The flavors are juicy and succulent with loads of black currant and toasted oak. The mature fully integrated tannins express themselves as a rich viscous texture that leads to a lingering finish that seems to go on forever. While the tannins are in check, a few years in the cellar will add an additional dim... Read More »

2008 Vignalta "Agno Tinto" Rosso del Veneto

Received 3 stars Vini Veronelli 2013. From the importer: "The latest among the red Vignalta releases: this is an innovative wine, cheerful, with hints of fruit, red and black berries, spicy, with lots of tannins solid but elegant; "iron fist in a velvet glove." A new reference in the Italian wine scene. Born by the contribution of the main Syrah and other local grapes. This wine was was greeted on its debut with a standing ovation."

2013 Robert Biale "Royal Punishers" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another classic from Robert Biale is the 2013 Royal Punishers. This wine, which emerges from a vineyard in Rutherford, has a black/purple color, stunning, almost off-the-charts richness, and a killer finish of nearly a minute. It was aged in 30% new French oak for 17 months prior to bottling. It is an amazing wine that tips the scales at 14.9% alcohol, which is not all that high for a Biale wine, as both the E.B.A. and Like Father Like Son hit 15.5%. This wine should drink well for 10-15 years. (RP)" (12/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "*Highly Recommended* Ripe, plush and juicy not ...Read More »

2013 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino County Petite Sirah

Bolinas-based Sean Thackrey has made a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch since 1997, and are we glad he has! This is a wine to put away in your cellar (or closet) for however long you can stand it! When you do get around to opening it, watch it explode from the glass and change over the hour or two it takes for you two drink the bottle, offering such an array of aromas and flavors it is impossible to catalog them here. 2011 Stags' Leap Winery Napa Valley Petite Sirah

91 points Wine & Spirits: "This wine’s dark plum flavor is completely dry, with savory herb notes in the background. It’s reduced when first poured, needing hours in a decanter or several years in the cellar to come around. With air, the juiciness of the fruit comes to the fore, a sleek Napa red with rich balsamic notes and earthy, plum-skin tannins. Age it to serve with slow-braised short ribs." 2013 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Coming from the cool-climate Theopolis Vineyard in the Yorkville Highlands, the 2013 Petite Sirah Tierra is a blend 100% Petite Sirah that was aged in 25% new oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its inky purple color is followed by lots of black and blue fruits, violet, pepper, graphite and hints of underbrush on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, supple, pure and polished, it's a beautifully civilized, if not elegant, expression of Petite Sirah that will have 10-15 years of longevity. 89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A tannic beast is the 1999 Petite Sirah Barcini Vineyard. The wine is a dense purple color, with notes of earth, smoke, licorice, and black fruits. Quite sweet on the attack, full-bodied, with rustic tannin in the finish, this wine will require 5-6 years of cellaring and keep for up to two decades." (2/2002) 88-90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Healthy ruby. Sweet, sappy aromas of crystallized berries, smoked meat, mocha and iron. 2013 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Not yet bottled, the 2013 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard could possibly rival the near-perfection of the 2013 Pesenti Petite Syrah. Blueberry, blackberry, acacia flowers and almost gravelly alluvial notes jump from the glass of this full-bodied, massive, concentrated wine. The tannins are very high, but they are sweet and well-integrated. This should turn out to be a prodigious Petite Syrah to begin drinking in about 10-15 years and cellar for children and grandchildren over the following 30-50 or more years. 2000 David Bruce Central Coast Petite Sirah

Stretching in a narrow band from Santa Barbara to the San Francisco Bay,the Central Coast region is characterized by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. These grapes come from several vineyards in Paso Robles and southern Monterey. The resulting components display notable differences, some exuding bright,spice-tinged fruit while others are jammy, earthy and dense. The blend in many ways exceeds the sum of these parts, offering blackberry, blueberry and white pepper aromas, with a supple and balanced feel coming from our gentle handling of the fruit.Limi... 2007 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

Finding information to share about Sean Thackrey's wines is about as challenging as locating Thackrey's Bolinas property, which is located an hour north of San Francisco in western Marin County. Thackrey's rustic winery-in-a-eucalyptus grove is only accessible via a twisting road that ends at the Pacific's edge, according to the Wine Spectator. The highly-allocated results are made in Thackrey's distinctive style: powerful and intense with rugged tannins using methods culled from ancient texts, mostly translated (Thackrey reads seven languages). 2009 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

"Sirius" is right, as in, this is some SERIOUSLY GOOD Petite Sirah. Sourced from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Mendocino, the 2009 "Sirius" Petite Sirah from this eccentric Bolinas winemaker offers an intense nose of red and black cherry, along with hints of sage, oregano, and explosion of exotic herbs and spices. It is concentrated and full-bodied, but maintains a fine tension between richness, acidity, and tannic power. Oak is not a dominant factor here; this wine is all about complex aromas and the varietal's naturally rich texture. Minerals and tannins gri... Read More »

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky blue/purple-colored 2001 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Acres (a mere 13.2% alcohol) reveals a promising nose of licorice, blackberries, minerals, and flowers. This stacked and packed, full-bodied, enormously endowed effort is relatively accessible for Petite Sirah, but ideally should have 5-6 more years of cellaring. It will keep for two decades." Hints of blackberries, raspberries, vanilla and creme brulee hint at charm to come with long-aging, and those who like the mass and muscle of Petite Sirah are going to find lots of enjoyment in this one over the next decade." My favorites include the Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard, followed by the Pesenti Vineyard, which shows more chalky graphite characteristics.
