2014 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A 100% varietal wine, the 2014 Petite Sirah Tierra comes from the Theopolis vineyard in the Yorkville Highlands (this was previously used by Carlisle and is close to Paul's Halcon site) and was aged in 25% new French oak. It sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as terrific notes of black and blue fruits, tobacco leaf, licorice and chalky minerality. Rich, textured and full-bodied, with beautiful purity of fruit, it has enough texture and richness to shine even today, but I suspect it will evolve for 10-15 years. I continue to love these wines from Pau ...Read More »

2013 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

From the winery: "Picked at atypically low sugars for the variety. Fermented in small lots with some stem inclusion and some native yeasts. Aged on lees in less than 10% new oak. From a limestone and shale rich block on Pierce Ranch in southern Monterey County. We pick Petite Sirah from two blocks in the Y-Ranch section of the Pierce Vineyard. Block 1 is a west facing rocky hillside littered with chunks of white limestone, which at times are as large as two fists. "

2013 Joseph Swan "Bastoni Vineyard" Russian River Valley Petite Sirah

From the producer: "This wine is as dark as our tannat, which is saying a lot! Deep, deep red. Although the nose is not fully developed as of yet, it is about black plum and, even though it was aged in neutral French oak barrels, a hint of wood. In the mouth it’s power is obvious but at the same time it exhibits balance and even a bit of elegance. Sort of like a middle linebacker doing ballet. It is a bit juicy but with a tannic edge and great acidity. Knowing what I do about how many petite sirahs tend to age, we plan to put several cases in the librar... Read More »

2013 Jeff Cohn Cellars "Sweetwater Springs Vineyard" Russian River Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lastly, the 100% Petite Sirah 2013 Landy Sweetwater Springs Vineyard is another 200-case cuvée from a steep hillside vineyard planted in loamy clay and alluvial soils. This wine spent 16 months in 100% new French oak prior to being bottled. It is a powerhouse at 15.5% natural alcohol. Absolutely sensational Petite Sirah, right up there with some of the greatest from California, this killer effort has an inky purple color and a beautiful nose of blueberries, black raspberries, blackberries and floral notes, but it is remarkably concentrated, full-bodied a ...Read More »

2014 Once & Future "Palisades Vineyard" Calistoga Petite Sirah

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Petite Sirah Palisades comes from that well-known Napa vineyard up near Calistoga. This is another big, meaty wine, with lots of white flowers, blackberry and cassis, a huge, chewy mouthfeel, and some pepper, smoke and barbecue notes. This beautiful Petite Sirah is round, juicy and surprisingly civilized. It should drink well for 15-20 years once it’s in bottle. Once and Future Wine is the resurrection of Joel Peterson, who was so incredibly successful building Ravenswood into a premium Zinfandel producer. Of course, Ravenswood was sold many ye ...Read More »

2003 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Note from 02/2005 review, re-reviewed with no new note in 06/2005) The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. (RP)" (2/2005) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* What an aroma. So Côte-Rôtie, so powerful and rich, yet so refined. Masses of w ...Read More »

2003 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard exhibits a deep purple color and a nose of creosote, scorched earth, blue and black fruits, minerals, and hints of pepper and white flowers. A rich wine from a vineyard adjacent to the library in St. Helena, it should be at its finest between 2008-2025. (RP)" (2/2005) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry and fruity Tellicherry pepper, with exotic suggestions of apricot and white flowers; high-toned and slightly port-like. Then sweet, exotic and penetrating. Finishes with big, ripe tannins." (6/2005) K&L Notes: Turley ... Read More »

2001 Turley "Hayne" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard’s black/purple color is accompanied by a compelling bouquet of black fruits, graphite, and white flowers reminiscent of a top-flight Hermitage. Tremendously rich, full-bodied, and viscous, with 13.2% alcohol, sweet tannin, and well-integrated wood, this profound Petite Syrah will be at its finest between 2008-2020+. This is truly magnificent stuff with great purity, length, and intensity." (8/2003) 93-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated black ruby. 2002 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard (400 cases) represents the essence of this varietal. It is an intriguing, provocative effort boasting an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of graphite intermixed with melted licorice, espresso, chocolate, blackberries, blueberries, and concentrated creme de cassis. Pepper and flower-like aromas are also present, but no oak is noticeable in this massively extracted, phenomenally rich, shockingly well-balanced Petite Syrah. Its purity and palate impression are fantastic. (RP)" (12/2003) 94 points Vinous: "Healthy bright ruby; re ...Read More »

2005 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Not surprisingly, one of the great Petite Syrahs made in this vintage has again come from the Hayne Vineyard. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Petite Syrah reveals a black/purple color as well as notes of graphite, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, creme de cassis, a liqueur of mineral-like intensity, and huge tannin and concentration. A meaty effort, tasting almost like a liqueur of bloody steak is the 2004 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years. 2003 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Sirah

92-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The hardest wine in this portfolio to figure out was the 2003 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge. It is a monster, but its tannins are so severe and the wine so painfully concentrated and extracted as to be so totally unevolved. It tasted as if it were only several months old. There are 175 cases (14.7% alcohol) of this blockbuster. It will undoubtedly settle down, with the tannins becoming more integrated, but certainly it is a huge wine that needs to be forgotten for at least a decade. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drink well 30-50 years from now. ...Read More »

Huge, rich, and full, this is a great wine with terrific intensity, length, and purity. Mike Officer deserves huge accolades for these extraordinary wines, and I can’t recommend them highly enough." This cuvee requires another 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years. (RP)" (12/2005) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Expressive nose offers kirsch, licorice and smoked meat. Large-scaled and wild, with slightly reduced flavors of black fruits and game. 2014 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

94-97 points Vinous: "A deep, powerful wine, the 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is also the most explosive of these Petites. Inky dark fruit, wild flowers, graphite and savory herbs all raced across the palate in a wine endowed with pure energy and concentration. This viscerally thrilling Petite is going to require patience, but it is pretty special, even today. (AG)" (10/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard was the most closed down and tightest of all of Turley’s Petite Syrahs. In short, consumers benefit from high level amateur winemaking and intense viticultural knowledge."

1998 La Jota Howell Mountain Petite Sirah

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Petite-Sirah (25% Viognier in the blend) has turned out well in this difficult vintage. Revealing a Rhone Valley-like character, it offers peppery, earthy, honeysuckle characteristics intermixed with black fruits and smoke. The wine is medium to full-bodied, engaging, soft...(RP)" (2/2002) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full ruby-red. Extravagant, faintly roasted aromas of black raspberry, maple syrup, iron and smoked meat. Lush, thick and gamey, with floral and peppery nuances adding to its complexity. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blue/black/purple-colored 1999 Petite-Syrah Estate (125 cases, 14.6% alcohol) exhibits thick, concentrated, pure flavors of licorice, minerals, blackberries, and cassis. Monstrous on the palate, this 1999 requires a decade of cellaring. (RP)" (2/2002) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque black ruby. Sauvage aromas of roasted meat, leather, blackberry, minerals and lead pencil. Bright and dense but not yet complex. Finishes persistent but a bit youthfully aggressive.
