2012 Haras de Pirque "Hussonet" Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva Maipo Valley Top Pick!
2012 Haras de Pirque "Hussonet" Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva Maipo Valley

92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of lemon rind, spice, sweet tobacco and hints of currants. Full to medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Light spicy aftertaste to this. Drink now." (5/2016) K&L Notes: While the 2011 vintage Hussonet took everyone by storm, we believe the 2012 vintage, with its greater volume, added structure and superior balance, to be even better. Simply put, there are few under $10 Cabs that deliver the true varietal character, subtle savory nuances and overall balance that this one does. Highly recommended.

2014 Tapiz "Alta Collection" Malbec Mendoza Top Pick!
2014 Tapiz "Alta Collection" Malbec Mendoza

95 points James Suckling: "A solid wine with blackberry and black pepper character. Full body, chewy tannins and a fresh and cool finish. So polished and beautiful. From grapes grown in Valle de Uco. Pomerol's legend Jean-Claude Berrouet consults here. Better in 2018." (5/2016) 91 points Wine & Spirits: "Sitting at 4,400 feet in altitude, the San Pablo area is now one of the most sought-after spots for grape growing in the Uco Valley. At that altitude, malbec grapes ripen with intense flavors and firm acidity, as in this red from vines planted in 2007. It is rich in notes of tart cherries and violets with a p ...Read More »

2014 Tilia Malbec Mendoza

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The grapes of the 2014 Malbec were harvested very early and 70% of them fermented using carbonic maceration. The freshness is so impressive that I had to look at the alcohol level, which is half a degree lower than in the fresher 2013 vintage! There are some herbal aromas (think raspberry leaf), bright cherries and flowers, even lilies. The palate is very tasty, with some subtle bitter flavors, fine tannins and very good acidity. This is a triumph over the vintage. Bravo! This should be readily available, as they produced 500,000 bottles of it. And it's ...Read More »

The palate is full, complex, with a fantastic energy and bursting with ripe dark plums; tannins are impressively silky and freshness is amazing. An exceptional nectar from the Agrelo terroir." Give it four to five years bottle age. Great wine." (5/2016) 91 points Wine & Spirits: "Cabernet’s spice and mint notes mix here with deep cassis flavor. It’s tender, with enough depth for long-cooked meat and with tense acidity from its Andean origin in San Pablo, one of the highest areas planted to vines in Valle de Uco." 2013 Concha y Toro Marqués de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto (Elsewhere $20)

91 points James Suckling: "This is a Cabernet that shows a complex character of ripe fruit and freshness with very vertical and fine tannins. It's partially aged in large casks. Gives you the generous fruit as always, but gives you more definition." (7/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted four Cabernets with winemaker Marcelo Papa, starting with the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha Puente Alto Vineyard from the classic Cabernet zone of Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley. 2016 Gen del Alma "Ji Ji Ji" Malbec/Pinot Noir Gualtallary (Previously $18)

The wine was bottled unoaked. It feels a lot more serious and complete than previous vintages, and they attribute it to the superb vintage in Gualtallary, which surely affected the wines; ripeness was very slow, and there are more floral aromas. 2015 Noemia de Patagonia "A Lisa" Malbec Rio Negro

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 A Lisa is mostly Malbec with some 9% Merlot and a 1% pinch of Petit Verdot, a wine that shows the potential of Río Negro in Patagonia and the style of Noemía at a very attractive price and at the same time is easy to drink. 2015 seems to be an excellent vintage in the region, and this wine, which only saw 30% of its volume in neutral, well-seasoned oak barrels while the rest was kept in stainless steel for some nine months, shows a balance and freshness that can compete with the fines vintages produced. Over the past five or so years, Catena has been fine tuning their range, producing Malbecs from their vast vineyard holdings of more specific origin, including from this fantastic parcel in the Lunlunta. This is their mother vineyard, where they still take cuttings for additional plantings. It is a 90 year old vineyard located on a warmer site consisting of sandy clay, loam and stones. It produced a fantastic, richly fruited, seriously structured, and finely detailed Malbec in 2014. Well worth the price for enjoying now or for mid-term cellaring.

2014 La Posta del Viñatero "Pizzella Vineyard" Malbec Mendoza

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Malbec Pizzella Vineyard is from Altamira. The vineyard was originally 17 hectares and the owner planted an additional 12 (and is planting yet more), so there is room to grow. This is the most harmonious, elegant, and at the same time backward, of the three single-vineyard Malbecs. Not as showy as the others in the palate either as the tannins are austere and the chalky minerality sticks to your teeth. Bodega Poesia is a project created by Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and her husband, winemaker Patrice Lévêque. 2016 Viña Cobos "Felino" Chardonnay Mendoza

A rich, ripe, fairly classic Chardonnay with old school California leanings except...this one is from Argentina! The California connection here is that noted consultant and winery owner Paul Hobbs owns Viña Cobos, and is making wines that have his stylistic stamp, but perhaps just slightly dialed back from the usual ripeness and fruitiness. Here we have an appley Chardonnay, with hints of toast (5% of the wine is aged in French oak, a small portion of which is new) and a genuinely crowd pleasing style. Very well made.

This is the first vintage where the Malbec takes half of the blend, as they want to increase the Mendoza/Argentina character of the wine reducing the more herbal varieties. 2016 Weon Carignane Maule Valley (Previously $14)

Carignane has definitely become one of the defining grapes of Chile. The style is usually a bit juicier and less earthy than that of much of France, but still retaining fresh acid structure, low pH, and occasionally a subtle green, eucalyptus twang. The Weon, from the Maule Valley, is initially a bit funky, in a good way, but turns juicy and fleshes out nicely on the mid-palate. A great introduction to Chilean Carignane.

2013 Casarena "Naoki's Vineyard" Malbec Agrelo

Named for the owners' grandchild, this wonderful, supple Malbec comes from vines planted on a block with limestone and abundant marine fossils. Agrelo, the village where Catena's main winery is based, has long been known as a premier district for both Cabernet and Malbec, an area where elegant wines with nicely rounded tannins and terrific fruit expression are regularly made.

2014 Catena Appellation Cabernet Franc San Carlos

Over the past five or so years, Catena has been fine tuning their range, producing wines of more specific origin from their vast vineyard holdings. Originally planted in 2007, these 20 hectares of Cabernet Franc (which Laura Catena notes, is the same acreage that Cheval Blanc has planted to the variety!) represent a significant investment, though not a suprising one given the grape's popularity and proven ability to produce very good wine in the Uco Valley.
