97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This full-bodied blended whisky hits all the right notes, starting with plenty of rich caramel and oak tones on the nose and palate, plus touches of butterscotch, spicy cinnamon and clove. It finishes long, slightly oily and mouthfilling. Sip it straight or add a splash of sweet vermouth." (11/2015) K&L Notes: Voted Canadian Whisky of the Year by the Whisky Advocate, Lot 40 is considered by many to be the quintessential Canadian rye whisky, garnering heaps of praise and a cult-like following. Distilled by Hiram Walker, now run by Pernod Ricard, it was briefly discont... Read More »
Since the great American rye whiskey shortage began back in 2008 much of the market has gravitated over to "North American" rye whiskey, i.e. Canadian-distilled rye from above the border. Since that transition no brand has become more beloved than perhaps Whistle Pig, the Vermont-based company that sources ten year old stocks of Alberta rye whiskey and blends them into a lovely expression both rich and robust. Earlier this year the company announced a single barrel program allowing select retailers to choose single barrel, cask strength versions of the W... Read More »
This rye whisky by Alberta Distillers showcases the value proposition that unblended Canadian whisky can offer real whisky drinkers. Whereas previous Canadian releases masquerading as American whiskies (WhistlePig, Masterson's, etc.) have been rather expensive and geared toward the high-end market, Beam has retooled its Canadian partnership and focused on the economical option. There's plenty of richness, weight, and texture on the palate with lovely oak and rye spice. The CC 100 should give Bulleit some serious competition in the $20 category.
Whisky Advocate: "The third recently released 100% rye whiskey sourced from Canada, with the others being WhistlePig (50%, $70) and Jefferson’s (47%, $40). (The one you purchase might depend on which one you can find, as they are all quite limited.) This one sells at a premium to the other two, but shows polish and is nicely rounded. Layers of sweetness (honeyed fruit, caramel, nutty toffee, maple syrup), toasted oak, cinnamon, evergreen, nutmeg, and a dusting of cocoa. Very distinctive! (Vol. 20, #4)" K&L Notes: Another independently-bottled Canadian 10 year old rye, a la the Jeffers... Read More »
From the brewery: "Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored, in moderation, of course! This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from... Read More »
91 points Whisky Advocate: "Inspired by Crown Royal Monarch, Crown Royal is introducing a new line of equally remarkable whiskies called the Noble Collection. This “Cornerstone Blend” begins the series. Rye-grain whisky, fresh-cut lumber, and new oak. Sweet, with a broad spiciness, rich heady nose, floral overtones, and fruity esters. Vague milk chocolate, tropical fruit, and ripe bananas soften the peppery spices. Powerful yet elegant. Complex and tightly synthesized into a single, well balanced whole. (DK)" (7/2016) K&L Notes: Crown Royal's 2016 limited edition release is called the Cornersto... Read More »
Whisky Advocate: "The U.S.-released Dark Batch is, if not the same whisky as the Canadian-released Dark Horse (both from Alberta Distillers), a very close cousin. It is dark; it’s 1% sherry, which brings the intense dried fruit notes along with cedar and a bright, pleasantly musky note. More Canadians should break the 80 proof barrier: this booms into the mouth, throwing wood, cereal, fruit, and sunshine around. Good to sip, bold in a cocktail, holds its own on ice, nice price. (Summer 2015)" K&L Notes: The Dark Batch Alberta rye whiskey from Beam Suntory is here at last, utilizing st... Read More »
This black ale shows aromas and flavors of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its color may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer that will suit most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first-rate vanilla beans.
Originally developed in the cool wine regions of Germany in the mid-1700s, Icewine is ideally suited for Canada's Niagara peninsula and the Okanagan Valley's climatic conditions. The grapes are left on the vine well into the winter months. The resulting freezing and thawing of the grapes dehydrates the fruit, and concentrates the sugars, acids, and extracts in the berries, thereby intensifying the flavours and adding complexity to the resulting wine.

The ultimate alcoholic ginger beer from the 1905 recipe that made Fentiman's famous in the U.K. for a century to come. This special recipe was given to John Hollows by Thomas Fentiman as dowry for his daughter's hand in marriage. Hollow proceeded to run one of the Fentiman's brewing halls and the result is this wonderful long lived brand. Using traditional old school fermentation, which involves only the addition of yeast and sugar to the fresh botanical ginger brew, it takes nearly two weeks to ferment and the result is one of the most festive and refre... From the brewery: "The Black Baron is topped with a rich mocha foam that lets out hints of cocoa beans, black fruit, licorice and material consumed. His mouth is a generous mix of roasted, caramelized sugars and bitterness, all converging to a rich and comforting final."

Thousands of years ago, thirteen crystal heads were scattered across the earth and they are greater and more powerful than anything we have the ability to manufacture today. Their workmanship is perfect: they contain no tool marks and have been cut against the natural axis of the crystal, defying the laws of phys... Read More »
