This is fresh, minerally and crisp, with that classic Gruner white pepper lift to the nose and tangy green apple and snap pea flavors on the palate. In an easy to open, liter-sized bottle, it's a refreshing go-to for a variety of green salads or veggie dishes, and is particularly complementary to dishes featuring asparagus, Brussels sprouts, or artichoke. The Etz family has been in the wine business since 1898, and the estate is now in the fourth generation. With nearly 40 hectares of vineyard in production, the Etz estate prides itself on synthesizing th... Read More »
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose barely hints at the subtle joys contained in this concentrated, fresh but generous wine. Ample fruit-think yellow pear and yellow plum-is held at the core, tightly corsetted by fresh citrus. Full of verve, savoriness and joy. (AK)" 91 points Wine Spectator: "A powerful and savory white, with concentrated green peach, apple and white cherry flavors, accented by sage and white pepper notes. Lemon curd and chamomile details show on the finish. Drink now through 2020. (KM)" (9/2016)
90 points Vinous: "Honeydew, fennel and lily-of-the-valley on the nose are joined by crunchy evocations of cucumber and cress on a bright yet subtly creamy palate that features positively invigorating phenolic cut as well as alluring inner-mouth perfume. Ore-like, stony intrigue lies beneath the surface of a buoyant, consummately refreshing finish. And this harmonious ripeness was ready for picking in mid-September, for a finished alcohol level of only 11.8 percent. Ott continues to purchase some fruit for this bottling from parcels whose organic farming and eventual harve ...Read More »
Domaine Begude is a small, family-owned property located high in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Limoux region of the Languedoc. The long, cool growing season lends itself perfectly to the production of crisp and delicate wines, all organically certified by Ecocert & NOP. The "Exotique" is 100% Grüner Veltliner, a grape not authorized for cultivation in France. James Kinglake, owner of Begude, wanted to experiment so he sought out cuttings from his friend Markus Huber of Huber winery located in the Traisental region of Austria. The experiment succee... Vinous: "From diverse sources in Krems-Stein, this delivers classic Grüner Veltliner virtues, which is more than can be said about quite a few generic bottlings of the vintage. There is a nod in the direction of vintage-typical ripe honeydew and muskmelons, on both the nose and the buoyant palate (as in 2014, at 11.5 percent alcohol), but fresh lime and green bean lead to a brightly juicy, lightly crunchy finish. (DS)" (2/2017) K&L Notes: Jancis Robinson has this to say about Hochterrassen: "Probably the best value of the 'everyday' Grüners is Salomon Uundhof Hochterrassen Gr... Read More »
Wine & Spirits: "A blend of Zweigelt and Pinot Noir macerated for six hours on the skins, this has the heft for the dark meat of a turkey, with a slight sweetness and spice to its cranberry fruit." (4/2013) Wine Enthusiast: "This is a soft, creamy, strawberry- and caramel-flavored wine with lively acidity and a very crisp, citrusy aftertaste. It’s an ideal apéritif-style wine, perfect for the summer." (9/2013) K&L Notes: 10th generation winegrower Markus Huber manages this 200+ year-old family operation, and it is under his expert leadership that Huber Hugo has gained international recognition as the st... Winery Notes: "This young fresh perfectly vinified Gruner Veltliner is produced by master winemaker Meinhard Forstreiter. Fresh, dry, "zippy" with loads of healthy grape flavors and acidity that make one think instantly of green apples and citrus fruits, this lovely wine is a great aperitif and a great companion to all casual meals where being with friends and great conversation are the most important part of the meal. Drink up!"

Vinous: "This basic estate Grüner (officially a 'Kremstal DAC') comes off relatively soft and understated, but a sense of cucumber juiciness, subtle green herbal seasoning and a mouthwatering pinch of salt combine to insure that its polished and buoyant performance will make it a gracious guest at table. (DS)" (2/2017) K&L Notes: "The Malat Winery, located on the south bank of the Danube River in the Kremstal districtus of Austria, has been producing exceptional wines since 1722. Ninth generation winemaker Michael has continued this tradition, taking over the fifty hectare e... Read More »
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice* Pure notes of ripe but crisp pear on the nose turn into concentrated, herb-spiced pear and citrus notes on the palate: the ripeness of the pear vies with the zesty freshness and makes of a lively, vivid and most enjoyable and refreshing wine. This is crisp, light bodied but balanced and puts a little Austrian spring in your step. (AK)" (9/2016) K&L Notes: Importer's Notes: "To make good wine, says Walter Buchenegger has much to do with the art of living: You have to be a traditionalist, while facing new opportunity. You have to be patient and accep... Read More »
90 points Vinous: "The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Meeresboden is a bit brighter and more tense in style than the Paragon. Citrus, mineral and floral notes abound in a distinctly savory Grüner that needs time to unwind from its recent bottling. My sense is that the Meeresboden is holding back quite a bit of its potential, as there is good underlying intensity waiting to emerge. Because of shatter and low yields in John Sebastiano, in 2015 most of the fruit is from Kick On Ranch. The 2015 has turned out beautifully. There are plenty of highlights in this range from Graham Tatomer ...Read More »
A family-operated estate since 1786, Stagård (going by a Swedish name for the last two of six generations) converted to organic farming in 2006. The winery's vintage note: "Golden straw yellow, fruity and open in the nose, flavours of fresh ripe green apples with hints of citrus fruit and wild flowers. Juicy and round with an elegant structure, soft notes of pineapple and grapefruit, well integrated acitidy, finishes with a light touch of tropical fruit. The grapes are selected from the south side mountain- and terraced vineyards of Danzern & Pitschental... Read More »
Bäuerl is a tiny Wachau estate located in the little village of Joching, up the street and behind the more famous Joseph Jamek. While Bäuerl's vineyards overlap Jamek's, the wines are quite different. Bäuerl's wines are lusty and earthy and well-structured, made by the young Johann Bäuerl.
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose spells delicacy and the palate proves it: this is a light-footed filigree and yet has a firm, straight backbone of spice and zest. Its midpalate texture slowly grows on you and draws you in with mossy notes of pear and ivy. (AK)" (9/2016) K&L Notes: Grüner Veltliner from 25-50 year old vines of the small-terraced Obere Steigen site in Traisental.
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aldo Sohm and Gerhard Kracher started producing Grüner Veltliner in the Pulkau valley (Weinviertel, on the border to Czechia) in 2009. The grapes for the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben come from contracted growers and the vines are 20- to 40-years-old. Fermented and aged in 80% stainless steel and 20% 1,000-liter Slavonian oak barrel, the wine displays a discreet, cool, and slightly spicy and nutty bouquet with good intensity. Full-bodied and complex, this is a fresh and elegant, firmly structured and grippy Veltliner with a persistent length. A lovely ...Read More »
91 points Vinous: "As usual, this bottling is informed largely by younger vines in Ott’s three top sites. A faintly cider-like spicy and tangy expression of apple is already evident in the nose, along with peony-like musky floral perfume and ocean spray. Subtly caramelized parsnip joins apple on the palate for a fascinating and by no means inharmonious interchange of sweet and pungent, fruit and root vegetable flavors. While less nuanced and enticing today than the corresponding Fass 4 bottling, this offers a striking combination of richness with buoyancy (at 12.8% alcohol ...Read More »

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Instead of going to the Weinviertal as they have with past vintages, sommelier Aldo Sohm and vintner Gerard Kracher headed to Burgenland, finding a vineyard in St. Georgen am Leithaberge, just northeast of Eisenstadt, along the southern edge of the Leitha forest. The wine they made from it tastes like no other, a grassy, minty Grüner with a cool, wheaty richness. Reduced at first, it needs time and air to emerge, growing with a leesy richness that will make it an easy companion to cream-sauced seafood and other rich dishes." (4/2015)
92-93 points Vinous: "Fermented in tank and then aged in cask, whence I last tasted it, this projects a relatively soft profile, with ripe Bartlett pear and honeydew melon lusciously dominating. But welcome counterpoint arrives in the form of varietally typical crunch of snap pea, site-typically peppery pungency and stony impingement, and a glowing piquancy of fruit seed on the impressively sustained finish. Among the current collection’s Grüner Veltliner bottlings, this one preserves noteworthy juiciness and balances richness with tension and invigoration. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rather closed nose leads to a citric, ever so slightly peppery palate. The body approaches on light feet, with an almost weightless freshness. If you like it feather-light, this is your wine, just a silky touch of bracing acidity and an ultraclean finish. (AK)" (3/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Grüner Veltliner Gaisberg 1ÖTW is very clear and fresh nose, fresh & crisp with bright fruit aromas, leafy notes, lemon flavors. Intense, juicy and very piquant, this GV is well balanced, with freshness, nice purity and grip." (10/2016) K&L Notes: Liter bottles of Grüner are a must-have for any re... Read More »
Ilse and Josef Maier organically farm about 20 hectares of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in Austria's Kremstal region. Planted to the deep loess soils of the Rosensteig Vineyard on the slopes of the Danube, this wine is a mouthwatering, complex version of what Grüner Veltliner can achieve in the right hands and terroir. Floral, with stone fruit fleshiness and a refreshing mint component, the 2013 Geyerhof Rosensteig is equally at home with spicy Asian fare, smoked fish or a fancy sausage with plenty of sauerkraut and spicy mustard.
Schmelz is a small family run estate located in the heart of the Wachau in the small little village of Joching. They manage roughly 11 hectares of vineyards all with varying soils and microclimates which are composed of 60% Grüner Veltliner, 30% Riesling and rounded out with Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller. The family has and continues to work under the philosophy that we live in a fragile environment and it should be treated accordingly. They use the knowledge of generations before while incorporating the techniques of today. They are also one of... Read More »
92 points Vinous: "This product of mid-November picking represents another of the small wonders of vintage 2014, inasmuch as it holds its own against its illustrious 2013 predecessor. Piquant green herbal aromas complement crab apple, fennel, lima bean and turnip on a polished, buoyant, brightly juicy palate. There are salivary-gland-tugging mineral elements here that defy naming but suggest oyster liquor as well as crystalline stoniness, and set up a dynamic, sustained finishing interplay with the wine’s fruit and vegetable elements. Josef Jamek is one of those names that is synonymous when talking about the wines from the Wachau. The style is not heavy handed and shows what vineyard expression is all about. The Ried Achleiten is arguably one of the most famous vineyards in all of Austria. Rich minerals subdued by a core of fruit that is wound up and tight. Classic white pepper and flowers add to the savory and salty finish.
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Planted in 1998 with 110 diverse genotypes and several rootstocks, the golden-yellow colored 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein displays a deep, yet very clear and pure, fascinatingly aromatic bouquet of ripe fruits and crushed stones. Full-bodied, complex and very salty, this is a rich and highly elegant as well as intense Veltliner with great tension and a stimulating grip and salinity in the finish. Great complexity and length. 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From the lower part of the cru, the 2015 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg Smaragd offers a well-defined, flinty and elegant bouquet of ripe white fruit aromas. Full-bodied, intense and mineral, this is an elegant and firmly structured wine that is fresher and more pure than the Loibenberg Riesling. A stunning GV that is pretty coolish and finesse-full, not just for the vintage but also the vineyard. (SR)" (6/2016)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is something eternally invigorating in this citrus-pure Riesling that smacks of grapefruit and lemon zest. There is a softer apple aspect too, uniting all in a fresh, pure fruitiness. There is something simply authentic at its very heart that keeps you sipping. And with such a light-bodied wine, you can (almost) do so with impunity. (AK)" (9/2015) 92 points Vinous: "Clover and apple scents and flavors feature in a restrained performance with stony, ore-like and struck-flint inflections. Polished in feel, and informed by juicy white peach and tart-edged apple, this fini ...Read More »
Vinous: "From riverside sites around Loiben, this bottling offers a tangy meld of rhubarb, green tomato and gooseberry topped by a reductive hint of bacon. It certainly makes for refreshment and invigoration, although the closest thing I detect to richness is a suggestion of kohlrabi. (DS)" (11/2015)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Subtle aromas of melon, tobacco and wet stone. Apricot and pepper flavors are given shape and definition by vibrant, well-integrated acidity. Finishes with good verve. This Grüner Veltliner is from an unusual vineyard, part of which is classified as Erste Lage. Neumayer bottles it only as a Reserve because he wants to market it earlier than would otherwise be allowed by the statutes. (JBP)" (9/2015)

90 points Vinous: "This lightest of Neumayer bottlings in 2013 weighs in at a mere 12.2% alcohol and displays the levity to demonstrate it, which, given its infectiously juicy meld of snap pea, green bean, honeydew melon and cucumber tinged with cooling green herbs and faint rind-like bitterness, makes for an at-once caressing and refreshing libation of which you can easily drink a lot. All of that having been noted, I was unprepared for the extra dimensions of salinity and iodine-like minerality that developed in the course of 18 months’ bottle age, once again deliciously ...Read More »
97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a vineyard planted in 1938, therefore with thick-skinned berries, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten Stockkultur displays a very deep, pure and stony bouquet with herbal, almost ether flavors on gneiss rocks. Very intense and concentrated on the palate, with a lovely juicy fruit and lots of salt and stones, this is a very elegant, salty, highly complex and expressive Veltliner of great elegance, finesse and complexity. it is perfectly balanced and very long. Vinous: "Borderline ripeness and alcohol makes for a wine arguably more Smaragd-like than Federspiel-typical, but one that delivers lusciously ripe Persian and honeydew melon on a soft, schmaltzy palate. Inner-mouth floral perfume adds allure en route to a soothing, understated, relatively simple finish. (DS)" (2/2017) K&L Notes: The Mittelbach family's Tegernseerhof, located in Unterloiben, just below Dürnstein, dates back to 1176 when the original structures were built by the Benedictine community of the Tegernsee Abbey. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The deep and elegant, intensely colored 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten offers both a perfectly ripe fruit along with herbal and floral flavors and crushed gneiss. Full-bodied, round, intense and highly elegant, this is a concentrated and powerful Veltliner with a dense and intense fruit. You can drink it now, but this would be a waste of talent. This is a spectacular wine with a piquant acidity and a very ripe and intense, but still precise, fruit and a dominating mineral bass line. The wine has a very good tannin grip, too. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A creamy nose shows spikes of green freshness, reminiscent of fern or ivy. The palate holds peppery, citrusy spray with creamy generosity while white pepper and ripe pear appear at the seams. The long finish is whistle-clean. (AK)" (3/2015) 92 points Vinous: "From a vineyard that belongs to and is farmed and vinified by Bründlmayer’s son Vincent, this displays positive reduction in the nose in the form of nettle-like prickle, struck-flint pungency and sweet-smoky machine oil, these element ...Read More »
91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Not bottled until March, 2015, this full-bodied, multi-vineyard Grüner Veltliner offers a palate-saturating creamy yet juicy, tart-edged and savory amalgam of honeydew melon, rhubarb and blond tobacco. The influence of new acacia wood (from which it was removed in the spring of last year after completing primary fermentation and malo) is prominent but not inharmonious; and the finish billows in the manner of powerful waves as opposed to clouds. (DS)" (11/2015) Wine Spectator: "("
David Schildknecht writes: "A new cellar facility has made it easier to perpetuate and even to expand the applicable range of this estate’s tradition of bottling their best wines only at summer’s end."
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like the Liebenberg from weathered granite and gneiss soils, but in a higher and cooler spot, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Dürnsteiner Kellerberg opens with an intense and herbal-flavored, rather spicy and stony bouquet of ripe and concentrated bright fruits. Full-bodied, ripe and piquant on the palate, this is a rich and powerful, well-concentrated and elegant Kellerberg with a rich extract and a long and persistent finish. The 2015 should be cellared for at least another 3-5 years. (SR)" (6/2016) 92-93 points Vinous: "Pineapple, papaya, lime and mandarin on the nose retu ...Read More »
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "White pepper is already signaled on the nose, on the palate it keeps fizzing amid crushed herbs and yeasty, salty tanginess. The fruit for now remains in the background, but ripe pear is ready to burst forth. This is a quintessential Grüner, full of focus and direction without forgetting the all-important charm. Lovely now but will be even better after 2018.
