1976 Domaine de Baraillon 40 Year Old K&L Exclusive Armagnac (750ml) Top Pick!
1976 Domaine de Baraillon 40 Year Old K&L Exclusive Armagnac (750ml)

The magical and rustic Domaine de Baraillon returns with two new vintages that remind us once again why this tiny farm in the town of Lannemaignan should be considered one of the world's finest producers of Armagnac. Monsieur Claverie cultivates his tiny vineyards by hand and distilling on his own still just as his father did before him. The Domaine is run by Monsieur Claverie and his daughter both of whom spend time in the vineyards, but equally so tending to the ducks, pigs and other produce. The Claverie family has been situated on this site since 174... Read More »

Chateau de Pellehaut "K&L Exclusive - L'Age de Glace" Ténarèze Armagnac (750ml) Top Pick!
Chateau de Pellehaut "K&L Exclusive - L'Age de Glace" Ténarèze Armagnac (750ml)

Chateau Pellehaut has been one of our top direct imports for the past year here at K&L. We've visited the Ténarèze producer twice over the past few years, always finding something new to bring home for our brandy fans. What really excited us this year, however, was a new project they were working on called L'Age de Glace: a young brandy meant to drink on the rocks (hence the name "Ice Age"). The fruit of the Armagnac takes center stage here, melding wonderfully with the small hint of vanilla from the wood. It's all distilled from Folle Blanche fruit and ... Read More »

Tariquet Bas "Classique" VS Armagnac (750ml)

Perhaps our best deal on brandy of any kind, this is outrageously smooth and supple to the point that I can't imagine anyone truly not enjoying it. The fruit is all handpicked and the Grassa family has been making it in a pot still since 1911. It spends only three years in barrel, which seems impossible when you feel its velvety texture in your mouth. The aromas are very delicate with dried apricots and caramel sifting gently in. The palate is lush with rich barrel flavors of baking spice. The finish has gobs of fruit, to the point that you'd think this ... Read More »

1987 Domaine de Jean-Bon 28 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Bas Armagnac (750ml) Top Pick!
1987 Domaine de Jean-Bon 28 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Bas Armagnac (750ml)

Domaine Jean-Bon was started by a family with three brothers, all of whom were named Jean, crazily enough. It turns out, however, that one of the Jeans was liked more than the other two, so they named the estate after him: Jean-Bon, or the "good" Jean. Jean-Bon produces about four to six barrels of Armagnac per year, all distilled from Baco (although they’ve started now with a bit of Ugni Blanc). The spirits are absolutely incredible values, almost like Baraillon in their richness, but with more sweetness from the new oak. The 1987 is the slam-dunk winne... Read More »

Marie Duffau Napoleon Bas Armagnac (750ml)

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Best Buy, Highly Recommended* The opening nosings find smells of roasted chestnut and baked pear; later sniffings pick up succulent notes of pineapple, caramel, black raisins, prunes and old oak. The palate entry is creamy textured and semisweet; at the midpalate the flavor becomes integrated and very nutty/woody. Concludes oily, semisweet and oaky." (12/2005) K&L Notes: Only estate fruit, raised organically, is used in the production of these fine Armagnacs. Aged a minimum of six years. Flavors of cocoa, cake batter and vanilla. Soft tannins on the finish and a t... Read More »

1987 Domaine du Cardinat 28 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Bas Armagnac (750ml)

Domaine du Cardinat has been in the Lalanne family for over a century. Farmer and grandfather of the current proprietor, Patricia Singh, built the family home at the domaine 100 years ago and cultivated the land long before that. In 1935, Joseph's sudden death thrust Patricia's father, Camille into the fields forcing him to leave school and devote his life to the family domaine. Just four years later, Camille planted the first vines at the domaine and devoted his life to this patient passion. There he worked tirelessly to produce great brandy, but his ma... Read More »

Chateau de Pellehaut Reserve Tenareze Armagnac (750ml)

On a beautifully situated property overlooking the town of Montréal-du-Gers, lies the Château de Pellehaut. Purchased by Gaston Béraut shortly after the Second World War, he has slowly developed one of the largest single properties in the region. Béraut's sons Mathieu and Martin take care of winemaking (the red, white and rose are all big sellers at K&L) and the élevage of Armagnac. Both are intelligent and enthusiastic about their product, and between them have studied enology in Toulouse and apprenticed at Chateau de Tariquet in Eauze, Chateau Beychev... Read More »

Domaine d'Ognoas Reserve Armagnac (750ml)

A property that's been in existence since the 1200s, Ognoas spends much of its time as an agricultural school and a training ground for young distillers. Because of their status as a "co-op" of sorts, the operation is partly subsidized by the French government, which means the prices are insanely low! Lucky us! Ognoas uses local trees for their cooperage and puts a medium toast on the barrel for a kiss of sweetness in the brandy. This roughly ten year old edition of Ognoas is a great alternative to the other $50-ish Armagnacs we offer, mainly because it ... Read More »

Domaine de Maouhum Armagnac (750ml)

This tiny estate is being run today by Christelle Lasseignou who returned home to Gascony after living in Paris when her parents were no longer able to run the estate. Christelle's grapes are all baco and she distills only a few barrels each year. We've tasted through vintages from 1983 to 2004, and even a few younger VS and XO expressions in are visits to Maouhum. They have all been outstanding, bringing an intensely woody flavor from the extended oak aging, plenty of spice, but with a delicacy that one might not expect from a brandy that old. While we'... Chateau de Laubade Special Reserve Armagnac (750ml)

This exceptional marriage of two special vintages is as delicious as it is rare. Bottled in 2000 by the Chateau's cellar master for a private marriage ceremony, the Laubade Special Reserve includes some of the oldest brandy we can get from Gascogne right now. The bride and groom were born in 1956 and 1948 respectively and this is a mingling of two casks from those special vintages with an additional 16 years mellowing in glass. The blend has a minimum age of 44 years and an average of nearly 50, which doesn't even begin to explain the exquisite depth and... Read More »

Because of their status as a "co-op" of sorts, the operation is partly subsidized by the French government, which means the prices are insanely low! Lucky us! Darroze Les Grand Assemblages "20 Year Old" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Absolutely stunning Armagnac with incredible richness, spice, and balance. I can't say it enough, so I'll say it again: every Bourbon drinker who's out there chasing things like Pappy 20 or BMH 16 should be stocking up on things like this instead. Or maybe I shouldn't say that because the people who actually drink Armagnac regularly will get pissy. In any case, this is a slam dunk spirit. Big wood, lots of spice and vanilla, and a rustic fruit character with seamless execution. My new favorite brandy for the moment. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)

Dartigalongue XO 10 Year Armagnac (750ml)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From “the oldest House in Armagnac” comes a well-balanced sipper that's reminiscent of Bourbon with its deep amber color; its rich, sweet caramel note; and bold finish that tastes of maple-butter sprinkled with clove and cinnamon. (KN)" (12/2012) K&L Notes: The Dartigalongue 10-year-old Armagnac is one of the best values in the store. Deep dried fruit flavors with a touch of toffee. We will keep getting for as long as it is available!

1997 Darroze Jouanchicot Bas Armagnac (750ml)

According to Robert Parker, Darroze is "considered the Pope of Armagnacs." From the producer: "Yet another estate whose entire production is sold by Darroze. Unlike the majority of the armagnacs in our ageing cellar, produced using the baco grape, Roumats armagnacs are 100% Saint Emilion (also known as Ugni Blanc in the Cognac region). This gives them a singular profile : from floral and white fruit aromas in the early years, evolving to rather more exotic notes (banana, mango, vanilla), these armagnacs are elegant and distinguished after 20 years of age... Baron de Lustrac 25 Year Old Brut de Fut Bas Armagnac (750ml)

Here's a 25 year old Armagnac from a legendary house for less than $80. Oh did we mention that it's also cask strength or "Brut de Fût" as the French call it. After 25 years that means it's only 42.4%, but the concentration is evident. This is an elegant and approachable style from the big name in Magnan, but remains complex and authentic. An incredible value even compared to all the wonderful and competitively priced armagnacs that we've brought in directly.

Darroze Les Grand Assemblages "12 Year Old" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Allow this bright amber brandy some air exposure, and the reward is a dried- fruit aroma and a vanilla flavor, with touches of cinnamon- and clove. It feels a bit drying on the palate. (KN)" (12/2012) K&L Notes: Darroze has arguable done more for the Armagnac category than any other single producer. They made their name by sourcing incredible single vintage cask strength Armagnac from all of Bas-Armagnac's small grower producers. This micro-negociant has some of the best stocks of brandy anywhere in Armagnac, with high quality offerings going back nearly a century fr... Read More »

1980 Darroze La Poste Bas Armagnac (750ml)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The aroma is toasty and jammy; following aeration the aroma turns spirity, mildly prickly and grapy/pear-like. The palate entry is biscuity/bakery-like and rich; the midpalate showcases the balance between the candy bar sweetness, the sweet oak, the alcohol, and the dried fruit ripeness. Finishes a tad raw."
