2008 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2008 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja

95 points Decanter: "The best classic style of Grenache and Tempranillo pulling together joyful fruit expression and serious depth. In the mouth it is amazingly complex and so unique. A benchmark Rioja blend. SJE: A rich, sweet and savoury Reserva style with all the red cherries and a strong Grenache influence. It is somewhat old-fashioned, in a good way, with plentiful integrated oak and a fine rasp of tannin. PM: This has a wonderful oxidative style, giving it a superb savoury nose of leather. It is a perfect combination of mellowness versus vigour, and at the same time ex ...Read More »

2005 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja

96 points Decanter: "Traditional Rioja at its ageworthy best, the Tondonia red is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo. Leafy, gamey and sweet, with tangy acidity and a volatile lift. (TA)" (10/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "Lovely depth of fruit to this mature red with chocolate, dark tea and bark. Purple flowers and violets. Full and very silky and refined. A beautiful traditional wine to get to know. Drink now." (7/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of ...Read More »

2013 Can Mayol Loxarel Garnatxa Blanca Brut Nature Classic Penedes

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced with Garnacha Blanca grapes, the new 2013 Garnatxa Blanca Brut Nature (they use the Catalan spelling of the grape) is the first I know of produced with the variety. It's sourced from vines grown at high altitude (for Penedès), 800 meters, from 30-year-old plants kept in contact with the lees for no less than 15 months. The nose shows some developed aromas with some leesy complexity and a balsamic touch of camphor, as well as an intriguing note of diesel that develops with time in the glass. The palate shows creaminess, I guess the bubbles, plus ...Read More »

2011 Can Mayol Loxarel "Reserva Familiar" Brut Nature Classic Penedes

Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse and a donkey named Garnatxa. While the focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) sparkling wine production, they also produce some very interesting still wines. In their chalky, high-altitude vineyards (above 2,400 feet for their highest vines, among the highest in the Penedès D.O.), Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada,... Read More »

2013 Agusti Torello Mata Cava Brut Reserva Penedes

Agusti Torello Mata is one of the most respected cava producers in Spain, focusing solely on vintage dated cavas and wines at the Reserva level and up. Typically bright, clean citric fruit flavors are juicy and ripe, with perhaps a hint of tangerine as well. A lovely bead, delicious fruit and terrific balance characterize the Agusti Torello Mata; it's definitely one of our favorite bubblies for the price!

2001 Bodegas Riojanas "Monte Real" Gran Reserva Rioja

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smoky and earthy smelling, with aromas of tobacco, subtle spice and dried cherry. This feels tight, with more acidity than body at this point in its evolution. Flavors of dried raspberry, plum, earth and brown sugar are solid and classic. (MS)" (7/2012) K&L Notes: Bodegas Riojanas is a very good and woefully underappreciated Rioja bodega making wines in a traditional style. The winery is most famous for their red wines, particularly their Viña Albina and Monte Real gran reservas. Monte Real consists of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano grapes all hand harv... 2011 Navazos-Niepoort Palomino Vino Blanco

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Navazos-Niepoort Vino Blanco is an unfortified Palomino Fino fermented in cask from a single vineyard. It offers a fascinating bouquet with subtle oxidative notes combining beautifully with light resinous aromas. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp, walnut tinged entry, crisp acidity and a lovely, slightly abrupt yeasty finish. This is very fine. 1995 Frei Jao "Poco do Lobo" Vinho Regional Beiras

A wine produced from Arinto, Bical and a few other grapes, this long aged, traditional Portuguese white brings to mind the waxy, yellow fruited, beautifully nuanced and detailed whites of Spain's Lopez de Heredia. The cellar at Frei Joao is similarly sized and nearly as old school, so if you're looking for a delicious, representative, old fashioned Portuguese white, or a more affordable version of the Viña Tondonia Blanco, this is your wine! Densely packed yet shockingly lithe on the palate, offering intense cherry liqueur, red currant and spicecake flavors given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows superb energy and clarity, finishing sweet, smoky and extremely long; velvety tannins add gentle grip. 2011 Can Mayol Loxarel "MM" Gran Reserva Brut Nature Classic Penedes

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The heavy bottle of the light Rosé 2011 MM de Loxarel came gushing out with violence when I uncorked it. It is a very pale blend of Xarello with 40% Pinot Noir that matured in bottle with the lees no less than 42 months. This time they told me it was white, but I'd say it's still a Rosé. But what really matters is that it's a very nice sparkling wine with more complexity provided by the extended contact with the lees. Decayed roses, freshly baked brioche and hints of mushrooms and forest floor are detectable in the nose. The palate is silky and it fills ...Read More »

2008 Adega Viúva Gomes Colares (500ml)

Colares is a small DOC on the the coast, northwest of Lisbon. It is one of Portugal's most ancient areas and is entirely planted on sand. Their vines are all original, ungrafted, and very old. The red grape in Colares is called Ramisco, which is grown nowhere else, and this Ramisco red wine from Viuva Gomes is rare and remarkable. From the sandy soils of Colares, Portugal, comes this light, delicate, spicy, and elegant wine. Its high acidity and aggressive tannins help Ramisco wines to mature beautifully, developing fine aromatic and flavor complexity. R... Read More »

2007 Taylor Fladgate "Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha" Vintage Port

98 points Wine & Spirits: "David Guimaraens selects this small lot from the oldest vines at Vargellas, Taylor's home base in the Douro Superior. The vines are planted on steep terraces in a north-facing amphitheater, many of them dating to a monovarietal planting in the 1920s. Vargellas is widely regarded as one of the great vineyards of the Douro, and this wine is yet another affirmation of its class. 2005 Lopez de Heredia "Vina Tondonia" Reserva Rioja (375ml)

Lopez de Heredia has a well-earned reputation as the stalwart traditionalist of Rioja, along the lines of Mascarello in Barolo, Mayacamas in Napa Valley, or de Montille in Burgundy. What is arguably lost in all the attention paid to traditional winemaking, wine ageing and craft, is that Lopez de Heredia pioneered the single vineyard wine in Rioja, a tradition they still honor with each of their wines. These wines hail from single vineyards -- well-sited, glorious single vineyards. Viña Tondonia Reserva is always the most claret-like, with a sense of rese... Read More »

2005 Can Mayol Loxarel "109 Mesos" Gran Reserva Brut Classic Penedes (Previously $80)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 109 Gran Reserva is old vine, head-pruned Xarello with 10% Chardonnay kept in bottle with the lees for no less than 109 months until it is released, but the 'sur lie' can be much longer—in fact, until you decide to pull the cork, as the bottles are sold without being disgorged. It's therefore cloudy and full of lees (depending on how much you shake the bottle!), which help prevent oxidation in the wine and continue evolving in the bottle. I have been greatly impressed with this bottling in the past and was very much looking forward to this 2005, ...Read More »

2007 Vega Sicilia "Valbuena" Ribera del Duero

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Aromas of dried cherry, raspberry, vanilla, mocha and Cuban tobacco, with smoke and potpourri accents. Supple and expansive, offering sweet, spice-accented red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate. Dusty tannins add shape and grip to the very long, smooth, penetrating finish. I find this wine quite approachable now but it has the balance to age. Not the weightiest Valbuena but very impressive for the vintage." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja (96RP, 94ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. This is a wine to smell over and over again. It might sound like an exaggeration, but this wine is still too young and you should wait a little bit and drink the superb 2001 vintage which should still be available on the market while this one matures in bottle. At this quality level the price is superb especially considering that the wine is being released 10 years after the vintage. Drink 2016-2024. (LG)" (12/2013)

The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of red berry fruit. The tannins are strong and quite robust, although it is counterbalanced by plenty of fresh red fruit mingling with dried herbs, white pepper and a touch of sage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Clos Mogador is the first wine in Spain entitled to the new classification of 'Vi de finca Qualificada'. The estate is 20 hectares composing a single vineyard. The Garnacha wines are 80+ years of age while the other varieties (Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah) have been planted since the early 1980s. Average yields are under 10 hectoliters per hectare and only 2000 cases are produced. The winery has never purchased outside fruit. The wine is deep purple-colored with a superb bouquet of toasty oak, pencil lead, mineral, blackberry and black cherry. This leads to an opulent, dense, packed, structured wine with 6-8 years of aging potential. Bid on this bottle of 1954 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Reserva Especial (98RP, 94JG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1954 Viña Real Reserva Especial was my Rioja epiphany wine, the one that made me realize Rioja was truly capable of producing world-class wines, among the very best in the world. The wine is 13. 7% alcohol, slightly above the average among old vintages and the growing cycle was long, 205 days. The vintage as such was qualified as merely "Good," and so did CVNE internally. However the Viña Real must have been exceptional among all the wines from them, as the wine was not bottled until May 1967, meaning it had an extremely long élevage of nearly 13 years! ... The bottle we uncorked was superb. The nose was refined and elegant with notes of sandalwood, truffles and pencil lead, complex and balanced, fragrant and hypnotizing, vivacious and very complete in the palate where it is a tremendous wine like a minor version of the 1959. A joint venture between Eric Solomon and well-known wine producer Richard Sanz, the 2013 Creta Old Vines (made from Rueda’s indigenous Verdejo grape) was aged in tank with some lees stirring. From a vineyard planted at a high 650- to 750-meter elevation with some vines 100 years of age, this crisp, mineral-laced white offers notes of white citrus and spring flowers. (RP)" (6/2014)
