2010 Domaine Bouchard Pere & Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Bouchard Pere & Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (94BH, (90-93ST)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is really quite aromatically refined, indeed the expressive nose is highly perfumed and speaks of floral, plum and black cherry scents layered with a subtle earthiness. The sense of refinement continues onto the palate as the focused, intense and sleekly muscular flavors evidence good power on the balanced, long and only moderately austere finish. As Clos de Vougeot typically goes, this is a very refined example. (AM)" (04/2012)

2002 Frédéric Magnien Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2002 Frédéric Magnien Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru. From Allen Meadows: "Frédéric Magnien reports that 2002 was 'a very easy vintage to vinify even though the fermentations were quite slow. We had a primary fermentation of around 20 days versus only 12 in 2001. The '02s effectively received two extra days of cold maceration as I don't control the temperatures and since the crop was harvested at between 13 and 15° C, it took every bit of the two days for the temperatures to climb in the vats. In terms of the harvest, there was a bit less yield and with much thicker skins compared to 2001. Sugars were very good as 70% of the wines were not chaptalized. The other important aspect is that there is no hardness to the wines as the tannins are very ripe and round, in fact almost sweet. And thanks to the thick skins, the wines are dense with a solid feel to them and while they were perhaps less classic than the '01s, it still is a relatively classic vintage. I prefer

2005 Sine Qua Non "17th Nail In My Cranium" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Sine Qua Non "17th Nail In My Cranium" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah (100RP, 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Syrah The 17th Nail In My Cranium, a blend of 96.5% Syrah and 3.5% Viognier which is aged 38 months prior to bottling. (I always wonder what Marcel Guigal would think of a wine like this which seems to tip its hat in the direction of Cote Rotie and then goes into high gear and clearly says, "I’m just something very different, but thanks for even thinking of that appellation while smelling and tasting me.") Black as a moonless night, the 2005 17th Nail reveals a stunning nose of spring flowers intermixed with creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, graphite, and hints of lard and barbecue spices. Dense, with an endless (and I mean endless) finish, remarkable purity, and layer upon layer of flavor, but no sense of heaviness or flabbiness, this prodigious Syrah should evolve for 15 or more years. 1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe (100RP, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was harvested between September 14 and October 3. The spring was cold, yet summer was extremely hot and dry – one of the hottest vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no rain fell in September served as a catalyst to get all the grapes ripe and in cellars....This wine has an incredibly complex nose of spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur, scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is full-bodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity. The wine should continue to drink well for at least another 30 or more years, but it is showing secondary nuances in the perfume. The wine is absolutely magnificent, broad, savory and mouth-filling. This is one of the all-time modern legends from Bordeaux as well as Chateau Montrose." (08/2014)

It blossoms inthe glass, with ripe fruit, malic, yogurtlikecharacter from the wood and ripe pear.Full-bodied, it is one of the most structuredwhite Burgundies of the '98 vintage. 1998 Roger Sabon "Le Secret de Sabon" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Roger Sabon "Le Secret de Sabon" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Shockingly good, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape le Secret du Sabon tastes like a hypothetical blend of the 2007 and the 2001. Powerful, massive, concentrated and beautifully ripe, it offers notions of kirsch, currants, peppered meats, Asian spice and licorice in its seamless, yet voluptuous and hedonistic personality. It's a crazy good bottle of wine that could be considered over-the-top by some, but who cares when it's this good? If I had bottles, I'd line them up for drinking as you don't want to miss this beauty while it's drinking at point. (JD)" (08/2014)

1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid... Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolutionand will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50 year wine. (RP)" (08/2011)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon (100WE, 99RP, 96WS, 95VN, 95W&S, 93CG). Wine Enthusiast: "A perfect score has to be considered in the context of its region. Shafer’s 2004 Hillside Select is tremendous as a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that competes with its peers at the highest levels. It’s always a fabulous wine, but in warm 2004, Shafer’s amphitheater vineyard sheltered the grapes, ripening them to perfection yet protecting the “iron fist in a velvet glove” structure that André Tchelistcheff defined as Stags Leap. This 100% Cabernet is tremendous in cassis, black currant and mocha flavors, and the 100% new French oak provides perfect additions of smoke and caramel. It’s soft and gorgeous enough to drink now, and should age well in a cool cellar for the next 20 years." (03/2009)

2012 Futo "5500" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2012 Futo "5500" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 5500 is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot bottled unfined and unfiltered after 18-20 months in oak. Futo practices long lees contact, five-day prefermentation cold soak and only one racking, which is when the barrels are racked directly into the tank prior to bottling. This is a stunning wine, and it was not easy to back off a perfect score, but maybe that will come with another several years of bottle age. The wine has profound intensity, amazing purity and clarity, an inky bluish/purple color, a stunning nose of spring flowers interwoven with crème de cassis, background charcoal, smoldering embers, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. It has an incredible lightness of being, despite its exceptional intensity and richness. This is an amazing wine and a great example of Stags Leap. It should drink well for 30+ years. Powerful but graceful, the palate delivers a vibrant core of black cherry accented with white pepper, mineral and balsamic notes alongside youthful but polished tannins and vibrant acidity. 2010 Sine Qua Non "Stockholm Syndrome" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Sine Qua Non "Stockholm Syndrome" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah (100RP, 97VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Syrah Stockholm Syndrome is a monumental effort that will stand toe-to-toe with the greatest Syrahs in the world. A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, it was fermented with 16% whole cluster before spending just under 42 months in 100% new French oak. It offers an incredible array of sweet dark fruits, cassis, white chocolate, licorice and hints of bacon fat that meld perfectly with its full-bodied, seamless, layered and impeccably put-together palate. Given the wealth of fruit here, it’s amazing how this stays light, graceful and elegant, without ever seeming over the top in any way. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 The Vineyardist Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (OWC - 96RP, 96VN, 93WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The compelling 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from Clones 7, 33 and 337. It’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in a combination of 50% new Darnajou and the rest Taransaud. The wine hit 15.1% natural alcohol, and 285 cases were produced. This is a great mountain-style Cabernet Sauvignon with an inky purple color, a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, wet gravel, charcoal, blackberry and crème de cassis. Very full-bodied and exceptionally pure and deep, this is multidimensional with skyscraper texture in a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon that is still young with tremendous upside. It can be approached now because it’s very much in keeping with the style of 2012, but five years of bottle age will do wonders, and I expect the wine will still be going strong in 25 or 30 years. 1967 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1967 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Mouton-Rothschild, always in the forefront of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, was the first estate to begin complete chateau-bottling of the harvest -- a historic step initiated in 1924 by the late Philippe de Rothschild. It is the only chateau in the Classification of 1855 to achieve reclassification. In 1973, it was finally moved from a second growth to a first. The 1967 label features the artwork of César Baldaccini. Clive Coates: "Medium to medium-full colour. Mature but not unduly so. The nose is beginning to lighten up a little but there is good depth and class underneath nevertheless. Medium body, soft, fragrant. Attractive fruit. Good acidity. Never a wine of great concentration, and without the breed of Latour 1967, but definitely a success." Tasted 1990 - (Grand Vins, the Finest Châteaux of Bordeaux and their Wines, pg 71)

2013 Larkmead "Firebelle" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Larkmead "Firebelle" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (94JS, 94RP, 91VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Firebelle Proprietary Red is a blend of 76% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine shows loads of roasted espresso notes mixed with white chocolate, plum, black cherry and currant. The wine is ripe, opulent, full-bodied and a very sexy, lush example of 2013 to drink over the next 15 or more years. This famous, historic estate, highly renowned in the late 1800s, sits to the north of St. Helena and to the south of Calistoga. It is a valley-floor vineyard of 110 acres that has been divided into a hierarchy of quality. The lineup of wines for now remains the same. They have had an incredible run of great successes at Larkmead, with the 2013s easily the match for the impressive 2012s. (RP)" (10/2015)

Full-bodied, dense and powerful. It is so intense and rich yet remains agile and fresh. Austere tannins give this wine form and tension. Lively and captivating. Beautiful now but be patient. Better in 2021." (05/2016)

2003 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (94RP, 92ST, 92W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the smallest crops to be included in the Ridge Monte Bello, only 32% of the production made it into the 2003, which is largely Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. Out of barrel as well as post-bottling I liked this wine a lot, and it has changed very little from when I last tasted it in February, 2010. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with sweet black currant, blueberry, graphite, licorice and toasty vanillin aromas. The tannins are still noticeable in this full-bodied 2003, but seem reasonably well-integrated. (RP)" (06/2013)

Of the 2007 Windward "Monopole" Estate Paso Robles Pinot Noir,Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Medium red. Sexy, understated aromas of raspberry, cherry and candied rose, with a spicy overtone. Suave and seamless on the palate, with good depth to its red fruit and spice flavors. Gentle tannins add grip to the long, spicy, focused finish. No way that I'd have guessed this wine came from a warm area. (JR)" (11/2011)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Honeyed minerals are drenched with an herbal liqueur in the fabulous aromatics of the 2002 Meursault Clos de La Barre. This broad, ample, sexy wine is hugely decadent. Medium-bodied, thick, and fleshy, it is a deep, intensely flavored, spicy effort. (PR)" (02/2004)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des 60 Ouvrées" ((92-94BH), 94RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Volnay Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrees (like the Clos d’Audinac and Clos de la Bousse d’Or, a monopole) features the oldest vines in the estate’s Volnay holdings, more than half of them planted in the mid fifties. Black cherry, purple plum, pistachio, ginger, and cumin inform the nose. On the palate this offers old vines creaminess, flattering glycerin, and yet also a persistently bright freshness of black fruits. A deep, lingering, faintly caramel-inflected bitter-sweetness, spice, and chalk further testifies to the concentration in this wine, which surpasses the Bousse d’Or in structure and gives it a hard run for its money in the charm department. Check on this in 8-10 years but then figure on another decade of improvement in the cellar. (DS)" (04/2007)

There is good verve and detail thanks to the bright acidity that is supporting the lightly mineral-infused flavors that terminate in a dry and clean finish. Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2011 Alvear Pedro Ximenez de Añada Montilla-Moriles (375ml) (100RP, 94WE, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Alvear’s 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It may also be one of the first to be vintage-dated. The grapes were hand-harvested in September, then allowed to dry in the sunshine until they began fermentation, which is ultimately arrested by the addition of spirits. The wine spent six months in large American oak prior to being bottled. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter. (RP)" (11/2013)

Wine & Spirits: "Domaine Leflaive includes 7.56 acres of Les Pucelles in three blocks, with many vines dating back to the 1950s and '60s. Those vines, saved from botrytis by September's north wind, captured the sunshine at the end of a long, damp season and transformed it into bold, spicy energy in the wine. The mineral flavors seem to reach back to the deep roots of the vines, sustained with the freshness of an orchard of heirloom apples." (04/2011)

2008 Abreu "Thorevilos" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC)
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Abreu "Thorevilos" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - (96-98RP)) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As outstanding as all the Abreu wines are, if I had to choose one that stands apart from the others it would be Thorevilos. The 2008 Thorevilos is the most complete and deeply satisfying of Abreu’s 2008s because the balance of fruit and structure is so impeccable. The 2008 literally explodes onto the palate with masses of dark fruit, tar, licorice and smoke. There is a fleshiness and depth of the fruit here that separates the Thorevilos from the other 2008s. Layers of fruit build towards the massive, masculine finish. In 2008 Thorevilos is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 15% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. (AG)" (12/2011)

2013 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2013 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ((96-98RP)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most impressive barrels samples I was able to taste during my trip through the region, the Galitzin's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a classic, structured feel, as well as sensational purity of fruit. Giving up lots of cassis, currants, spicy oak and bouquet garni, with subtle violet qualities with air, it hits the palate with serious richness, a full, layered mid-palate and masses of sweet tannin. Like most of Paul's wines, I think they have the fruit and texture to offer plenty of pleasure in their youth, yet they don't hit their stride until at least 5-7 years after the vintage.
