2005 d'Arenberg "The Dead Arm" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2005 d'Arenberg "The Dead Arm" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia (95RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "D’Arenberg’s most famous wine is its flagship, The Dead Arm Shiraz. The 2005 The Dead Arm Shiraz is sourced from ancient head-pruned vines. It was aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. It is opaque purple/black with an expansive perfume of toast, smoke, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, opulent, and super-concentrated, this structured, lengthy wine will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and drink well through 2025. (JM)" (10/2007)

Of the 2005 Anderson's Conn Valley "Eloge" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 2005 Eloge is a staggering wine that is utterly profound. Its extraordinary aromas of incense, cedar wood, creme de cassis, kirsch, spice box, and gamey smokiness as well as forest floor make for one of the most complex wines I smelled over the two weeks I spent in Napa. Full-bodied flavors are followed by a wine with sweet tannins, beautifully deep, concentrated layered fruit flavors, and a long, heady finish. This is gorgeous stuff that should evolve nicely for 15 or more years. (RP)" (12/2008)

Of the 2005 Domaine de la Janasse "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "One of the true superstars in the vintage, the Sabon’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is deeper and richer than the cuvee Chaupin, yet stays just as balanced, fresh and drinkable. Loaded with notes of ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, smoked meats and licorice, it has full-bodied richness and power, a deep, decadent texture and beautifully integrated acidity which keeps it pure, lively and fresh. Of the 2005 Hartwell Stags Leap District Merlot,Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Saturated ruby-red. Rather vague aromas of red fruits and rose petal, with some exotic oak notes of scotch and coconut. Juicy maraschino cherry, redcurrant and spice flavors are carrying a heavy load of sweet oak. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet in color, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate leaps from the glass with notes of crushed blackberries, black cherries and Bing cherries with hints of raspberry leaves, bay leaves and underbrush plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, nicely poised, very fresh and beautifully elegant, it has a solid frame of very fine-grained tannins and a very long, berry-laced finish. Still incredibly youthful. (LPB)" (02/2018)

2005 Williams Selyem "Forchini" Russian River Valley Zinfandel
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Williams Selyem "Forchini" Russian River Valley Zinfandel (92WE, 91ST). Wine Enthusiast: "This single-vineyard Zin is a considerable improvement over the ‘04. The alcohol in the ‘05 is far lower, almost a full percent, yielding a more balanced and harmonious wine. But it’s hardly shy. It’s powerful in wild blackberry, cassis, raspberry, root beer, tangerine, chocolate and sweet thyme, while the tannic structure is rich enough to warrant bottle aging for a decade." (02/2008)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Robert Mondavi "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, 94W&S, 94WE, 93VN, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a beautiful 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from Mondavi. The wine, a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, has a youthful, opaque bluish/purple color and a classic nose of lead pencil shavings, crème de cassis, licorice, and subtle, toasty French oak. Some chocolate also makes an appearance. Approachable, this full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and handsome Cabernet Sauvignon strikes me as one of the superb efforts the Mondavi Winery has produced, and should age effortlessly for another 20+ years. Given the bevy of $200+ Napa Cabernets these days, at $135.00, this is not a best buy, but it’s certainly a compelling price point, given this stunner. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. Once again, the vintage’s incredible freshness, vibrancy and precision are well displayed in this wine and, as I have indica

This wine needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last 25-30 years. 95+ (RP)" (12/2007)

2005 Far Niente "Cave Collection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Far Niente "Cave Collection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This well-established winery from the Nickel family has built a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot (14.5% alcohol) from their impressive holdings in Oakville. The winery has considerable history, having been founded in 1885 and then abandoned in 1919 with the beginning of Prohibition. Far Niente possesses one of the great labels in Napa Valley and the wine clearly lives up to the aesthetic beauty of the packaging. Dense purple, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Cave Collection offers beautifully pure crème de cassis fruit, licorice, graphite and subtle spice box. Oakville is, for me, the Pauillac of Napa Valley, and this is first-growth quality without a doubt. It full body, beautiful texture, seamless integration of all its component parts, and stunning ripeness make for a profound Far Niente that is aging magnificently and

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon (96RP, 95VN, 94WE, 93WS, 92CG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Almost as impressive is the 2005 Cabernet Reserve, a blend of 95.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.5 % Petit Verdot, in this case sourced 58% from Sonoma County and 42% from Napa. Its 14.5% alcohol is slightly lower than its sibling’s. This full-bodied wine is very concentrated, with a saturated bluish/purple color and a classic nose of mocha and espresso intermixed with crème de cassis and charcoal. The finish is a good 40-45 seconds, and the wine has a remarkable vibrancy and freshness from the vintage’s acidity. This is terrific stuff to drink now and over the next 12-15 years. Bid on this magnum of 2005 Angélus, St-Emilion (1.5L) (100RP, 97VN, 96ST, 96W&S, 96WS, 95CG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Truly great stuff, this wine performed at a three-digit level both in the horizontal tasting of 2005s in Baltimore, as well as in Montreal at this mini-vertical. This sensational, opaque, bluish/purple wine offers up notes of vanillin, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, plus a touch of licorice. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous cascade of ripe, rich, concentrated fruit. It is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered. The tannins are beautifully integrated but still present, and the wood, acidity, alcohol, etc., are all beautifully assimilated in this magnificent, majestic vintage of Angelus. It can be drunk now, but it is still an adolescent and that suggests it has at least another 25-35 years of longevity. (RP)" (08/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Péby Faugères, St-Emilion (100RP, 94WS, 93JS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A perfect wine in this vintage, the 2005 Péby Faugères has the classic liqueur of blueberries and spring flowers. Dense purple and full-bodied, with unbelievable richness, this tastes like a great Napa Cab from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, even though there’s no Cabernet Sauvignon in it. This is a sensational wine – rich, full and multi-dimensional, with a skyscraper-like mid-palate and finish. Kudos to Péby Faugères for producing one of the perfect wines of the vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon has been increased by this point, and it gives an extra dimension to the wine. It's very well balanced, with juicy flavours of cassis, fig, liquorice and chargrilled cedar. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma/Napa Counties Claret (98RP, 95CG, 93WE, 92ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This winery, sitting high atop Spring Mountain traversing both the Napa and Sonoma counties, has offered their two top cuvées in 2005 for this retrospective. The 2005 Proprietary Red Reserve Claret, sourced from both Napa and Sonoma, is a blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers a moonless, black-of-night color and notes of black truffle and burning embers, whiffs of charcoal, blackberry and cassis, and touches of chocolate and coffee. This stunningly complex, opulent, full-bodied wine seems to have approached its peak of maturity, where it should easily rest for another decade or more. With perfect concentration and a skyscraper-like palate feel with no heaviness, this wine (14.8% natural alcohol) is simply compelling in all senses. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Cailles" ((92-94BH), (93-94RP), 92JG, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As if there were not enough stony minerality in the Pruliers, the 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles lives up to its name, tasting as though its fruit had been macerated on cherry pits and pebbles. Its bitter-sweetness extends to notes of vanilla and chocolate that accent a deep black fruit concentration. Vivid, palpable density and old vines creaminess on the palate lead to a richly fruited but not at all superficially sweet, deeply meaty, and decidedly chalk- and stone-inflected finish of amazing refinement and penetration, indeed of Grand Cru length. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - 98RP, 97VN, 96JS, 95WE, 94DC, 94WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Its bigger brother, or sister, depending on the point of view, is the extremely young, fresh, vigorous, yet still exuberant and promising 2005 Harlan Estate. Normally, the blends on these wines tend to be 85%-90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest tiny proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and possibly some Petit Verdot, although I don’t recall that being a very important part of the estate vineyard. The 2005 is incredibly youthful at age ten, although certainly drinkable. And who wouldn’t consume it if they had the opportunity? It will benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and certainly has 30 or more years left in its evolutionary curve. Gorgeous, and tasting akin to a hypothetical Pauillac blended with a great Pessac-Léognan from Bordeaux comes to mind because of the smoky, subtle barbecue notes, fruitcake, forest

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges again illustrates roasted richness and a seamless meld of meat, fruit and mineral. Hints of tar and toasted pecan add further aromatic complexity. Dramatically expansive and mouth-coating, with endless variations – distilled, fresh, sorbet-like – on black cherry, purple plum, and their pits, this wine weaves tar, iodine, and chalk into its supremely long finish. The incipiently velvety texture and fineness of tannin are remarkable for so young a wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Gérard Perse believes this is the greatest Pavie he’s made to date, although certainly I would argue that list includes the 2000, as well as the 2009 and 2010, among his superstars. This wine, which I had both in the 2005 horizontal report in the Wine Advocate, and at a mini-vertical with Perse at the restaurant Maison Boulud in Montreal, looks to be a 75- to 100-year wine. Dense, opaque purple to the rim, with a gorgeously promising nose of blackberries, cassis, graphite and cedar wood just beginning to emerge, it tastes more like a three-year-old than wine that is already a decade old. This beauty is intense and full-bodied, with magnificent concentration, a majestic mouthfeel and a total seamless integration of tannin, wood, alcohol, etc. Beautifully rich, full and multidimensional, this is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the top doz

It has a fabulous bouquet that is mineral-rich and tensile. The palate repeats its performance from last year: focused, tense, laden with botrytis-rich fruit with a crystalline and sorbet-fresh finish that seals the deal. 2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Fay" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Fay" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (91CG). Connoisseurs Guide: "The mildly leathery, coffee and loamy earth traits that mark all of the SLWC siblings is again evident here, but this wine conveys a bit more fruity depth and thus moves to the head of the clan. Fairly full-bodied and pleasantly supple in feel, it is at once both accessible and rather deep, and, if it has tannins in place for five years of growth, it is already inviting and will partner nicely with savory meats in the mid-term. Lacking the bombast of the bigger wines in this review, the SLWC Fay offering makes it way with balance and richness." (04/2009)

Offering beautiful black cherry and black raspberry fruit, abundant chalk, minerality, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long finish, this over-achieving, full-throttle Fronsac is a brilliant example of the vintage and of this terroir. Give it another several years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-15 years. This sleeper of the vintage should prove to be one of the longest-lived vintages of Vieille Cure to date. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Thierry-Allemand "Chaillot" Cornas (94WS, 93ST). Wine Spectator: "A really dark, grippy style, with boysenberry and macerated currant fruit laced with pastis, violet and iron notes. The long, structured finish is pushed by a bright iron note and superfresh acidity. Hard to resist now, but will only blossom more with time. Best from 2010 through 2022. (JM)" (02/2009)

2005 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2005 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (94RP, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This iconic wine, consistently made since it was first released in 1979 by Randy Dunn, is always aged 30 months in barrel and then an additional six months in bottle prior to being released. It is always 100% Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Randy Dunn is one of the first advocates of alcohol levels under 14%. (This one is listed at 13.8%.) I just can’t comprehend the obsession and polemics about alcohol. Unless the wine lacks balance and character, it is rarely even a legitimate issue. Anything between 12.5% and 15.5%-16% can work well, and even some higher ones seem to carry their alcohol extraordinarily well, especially if they are made from grapes such as Zinfandel or Grenache. Dense purple in color and still looking like a barrel sample, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has a nice, cedary, new saddle leather-infused blackcurrant richness, outstandin

2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese (375ml)
Bid on this 5-half-bottle lot of 2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese (375ml) (96JG, 95WS, 92ST). John Gilman: " The 2005 Oberhäuser Brücke is a magical young Auslese in the making. The very primary nose delivers the uncanny purity of the best botrytized wines of the vintage, coupled with the brilliant terroir that is the Brücke, as it soars from the glass in a mélange of pear, candied grapefruit, kaleidoscopic minerality and a floral topnote. I am sure this wine is sporting plenty of botrytis, but today it is almost imperceptible on both the nose and palate. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and utterly ethereal, with a brilliant core of fruit, perfect focus and balance, and great reserves as the turbocharger kicks in on the monumental finish. This is very early days for this brilliant young wine. (Drink between 2012-2040)" (08/2006)

2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Cask 23" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Cask 23" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (90CG). Connoisseurs Guide: "Almost sure to raise controversy with its involving aromas of leather, roasted coffee, scorched chocolate and herbs, this unique offering smacks ever so faintly of Syrah and may not fit the fruity Cabernet model, but its complexity is beyond any argument. It is smooth and supple in feel with plenty of palatal weight and a fine sense of polish, and its neatly fit spine of firm structural tannins is precisely the stuff of fine Cabernet. A few years of age should make a good thing better, and it has room enough for ten years of growth." (04/2009)

2005 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The winery continues to turn out a strong Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in the Calistoga area. This is a big production item (10,000 cases), and tends to be a good value for a high-class Napa Cabernet. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (22,000 cases) is a beauty. Savory black currant fruit notes intermixed with some licorice, underbrush, and spice jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, smoothly textured, beautifully elegant wine meant to be served and drunk in its first 10-12 years of life. This clearly has the fingerprints of Chateau Montelena's Bo Barrett and his father Jim Barrett, but at a much lower price point, and for that reason seems an ideal steakhouse Cabernet that gives both value and pleasure. 2005 Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru ((93-95BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An interesting if slightly odd nose of reduction and menthol notes added to wild, ripe and layered red berry fruit aromas that complement the gamy and completely backward flavors that are highly complex and possess a firm and mouth coating texture. This isn't necessarily a wine of finesse or elegance but there is character to burn and as usual, I quite like this. In a word, stunning. *Don't Miss!*" (01/2007)
