Here the fruit is sweet and textured to the core, yet there is plenty of underlying energy in support. The textured, explosive finish is a thing of beauty. But it does have everything that should be in a great Pinot Noir--the sumptuousness, the silky tannins, the touch of wood, the red fruits. All of these are enveloped in an elegant structure, leaving freshness and delicious, refreshing acidity at the end. (RV)" (03/2007)

Superripe, slightly decadent aromas of red cherry, leather and underbrush. Plush, fat and large-scaled; a full-blown expression of soil, with notes of smoke and game. Dense bluish/purple in color with stunning notes of cedarwood, unsmoked high-quality cigar tobacco, creme de cassis and espresso roast, this wine has fabulous fruit, density and a full-bodied, youthful mouthfeel, wonderful balance and purity, and a terrific finish that goes on for close to a minute. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It's beguiling from the beginning, with unexpected shots of soy, corn nuts and gamy charcuterie. Bid on this magnum of 2010 Tablas Creek "Esprit de Beaucastel" Paso Robles Rhône Blend (1.5L) ((93-95JD), 94RP, 92ST, 90WE). Jeb Dunnuck: "Firm, structured, and showing the coolness of the vintage beautifully, the 2010 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel (45% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah, and 4% Counoise) is a fresh, focused, and balanced red that has loads of crushed berry like fruit, licorice, sappy underbrush, and floral nuances, as well as superb underlying minerality, all emerging from the glass. Quite tight and firm on the palate, with excellent purity, juicy acidity, and a youthful, energetic feel, this will most likely require 3-5 years of bottle age once released, and have 15+ years of total longevity. In 2012, Syrah plays a larger role than in both the 2010 and 2011, which is felt in the wine broad, expansive personality. This is going to be a fascinating Esprit to follow over the coming years. The sip starts with a dusty character, and then lovely flavors of light purple fruit, lavender powder and intriguing florality ensue. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of creosote/melted road tar, blackberry and cassis liqueur, pepper, and spice. This is Clone 4 and Clone 6, as well as Clone 337, blended together from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, aged in 100% new Darnajou barrels. For whatever reason, this wine seems to show more chocolate, espresso roast, barbecue smoke, dense blackberry and blueberry fruit and enormous body with not a touch of heaviness or astringency. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Truly great stuff, this wine performed at a three-digit level both in the horizontal tasting of 2005s in Baltimore, as well as in Montreal at this mini-vertical. This sensational, opaque, bluish/purple wine offers up notes of vanillin, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, plus a touch of licorice. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous cascade of ripe, rich, concentrated fruit. It is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered. The tannins are beautifully integrated but still present, and the wood, acidity, alcohol, etc., are all beautifully assimilated in this magnificent, majestic vintage of Angelus. Just magical stuff that has incredible aromatics of crème de cassis, white flowers, huge minerality, violets, and scorched earth. Vinous: "Ironically, the 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain from a much weaker vintage than 1997 on paper, is a much more interesting wine. Huge and explosive on the palate, the 1998 boasts serious depth and concentration. Iron, smoke, anise and dark red/blackish fruit all swirl around in the glass in a striking, nuanced Cabernet that is among the wines of the year in Napa Valley. A nice splash of sweet oak highlights the very keen curranty fruit in its aromas and continues on as a sympathetic partner to themes of cassis and black cherries in the wine's lengthy and beautifully proportioned flavors. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from their old vineyards in Calistoga. This is a dense, ruby/purple-tinged wine with full body, and despite the softness of the general vintage, Montelena has plenty of structure. Like nearly every vintage of their top Cabernet Sauvignon, it will last for 25 or more years. The wine has sweet tannin in a broad, flavorful, concentrated style with plenty of black currant, licorice, and spice. Bid on this magnum of 1974 Charles Krug "Vintage Selection Lot F1" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (92JG). John Gilman: "The Lot F-1 'Vintage Select' is the last Krug wine made from Fay Vineyard fruit by the winery, and may well be the last of the great Charles Krug cabernet sauvignons that had ranked right up at the very pinnacle of California cabernet during the decades of the 1940s and 1950s. The 1974 Lot F-1 has been fully mature for many years but remains in full bloom on both the nose and palate, as it offers up a superb bouquet of dark berries, chipotle peppers, woodsmoke, herb tones, lovely soil nuances, tobacco, a touch of nutskin and a fantastic spice box of Indian spices in the upper register that just become more and more complex and vibrant with extended aeration. Harmonious acids give shape to the wine without drying it. Finishes with sweet, rich tannins and very good length. This has filled in very nicely since I tasted it from barrel a year ago. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red is made from 45% Grenache, 29% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah and 8% Counoise (which Justin commented was a blend that was put together relatively late). It saw a big chunk of whole cluster (the Grenache was mostly destemmed though) and was brought up all in puncheons and foudre (the normal concrete component went to the Rocket Block). It offers up gorgeous notes of black raspberries, cherries, cassis, ground herbs and flowers. Vinous: "The tasting ends on a high note, as the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is deeply expressive, despite its obvious youth. Here it is the wine's sense of energy that stands out most. Vivid, nuanced and structured, the 1999 is a wine to cellar for another 5-10 years at a minimum to allow the flavors to flesh out. Readers lucky enough to own the 1999 who can wait a few years will be very happy. (AG)" (02/2014)

2009 Pride Mountain Sonoma-Napa Counties Merlot (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2009 Pride Mountain Sonoma-Napa Counties Merlot (1.5L) (90ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright medium-deep red. Sexy, expressive aromas of redcurrant, red plum, chocolate and nutty oak. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, with enticing flavors of red berries, cocoa powder and spices. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely lingering perfume. According to winemaker Sally Jackson, the Merlot in 2009 had less weight and structure than usual, but this wine is a charmer. 2014 Cayuse "Wallah Wallah Special #6" Walla Walla Valley Syrah (1.5L) (OWC)
Bid on this magnum of 2014 Cayuse "Wallah Wallah Special #6" Walla Walla Valley Syrah (1.5L) (OWC - 97RP, 93VN, 93WE) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Only released in special vintages, as well as only in magnum, the 2014 Syrah Wallah Wallah Special #6 is about as Northern Rhône as it gets. More rounded, sexy and voluptuous than the other cuvees, with full-bodied richness and silky tannin, it reminds me of the Burgundian style of wine from Jean-Louis Chave. Violets, crushed rocks, graphite, smoked earth and beautiful black fruit notes emerge from this sensual, elegant, ethereally textured beauty. It might be my favorite Special cuvee to date. It's already beautiful, but it will keep for two decades or more. (JD)" (06/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky is made from clones 4, 6 and 337, the same as the Schrader, and comes from the Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard as well. It tips the scales at the highest alcohol for them – 14.7%. It was aged 20 months in 80% Darnajou and 20% Taransaud and there are only 100 cases. This is a spectacular wine that is very sexy and forward, with great creme de cassis, and blackberry fruit intermixed with hints of coffee, unsmoked cigar tobacco, licorice and graphite. 2005 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2005 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (94RP, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This iconic wine, consistently made since it was first released in 1979 by Randy Dunn, is always aged 30 months in barrel and then an additional six months in bottle prior to being released. It is always 100% Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Randy Dunn is one of the first advocates of alcohol levels under 14%. (This one is listed at 13.8%.) I just can’t comprehend the obsession and polemics about alcohol. Unless the wine lacks balance and character, it is rarely even a legitimate issue. Anything between 12.5% and 15.5%-16% can work well, and even some higher ones seem to carry their alcohol extraordinarily well, especially if they are made from grapes such as Zinfandel or Grenache. Dense purple in color and still looking like a barrel sample, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has a nice, cedary, new saddle leather-infused blackcurrant richness, outstandin

This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. Best after 2012." (04/1997)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers looking for a relatively approachable, contemporary-styled Brunello will want to check out the irresistibly stylish 2001 Brunello di Montalcino from La Fortuna. Sweet and open on the nose, it displays luxurious notes of super-ripe cherries, minerals and toasted oak on a medium to full-bodied frame, with great expansiveness on the palate and a long, polished finish. 1980 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Proprietary Red (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1980 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Proprietary Red (1.5L) (90JG). John Gilman: "The 1980 vintage was one of the more difficult in this era in California, and the team at Joseph Phelps worked tirelessly in the vineyards during this year to get yields down sufficiently to get the crop fully ripened. This they may have succeeded a bit more than was good for them, as the 1980 Insignia weighed in at a rather hefty 13.8% in alcohol when all was said and done in this vintage. The wine is aging nicely despite its formidable alcohol level, but displays a touch less precision and purity than is customary with this bottling in this era at Joseph Phelps. The bouquet is a sweet blend of black berries, chocolate, pomegranate, mint, lovely soil tones, gentle smoke tones and a bit of chipotle pepper with extended aeration. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite powerful for Insignia, with tangy acids (obviously from acidulation, given its heady ripeness), melted ta

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard CCS is Clone 4 from another block, and always seems to hit all the sweet spots on my palate. It’s aged 20 months in 100% new Darnajou barrels. The good news is there are 520 cases of it. Just a prodigious wine, this spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon is inky bluish/purple with a gorgeous nose of spring flowers, blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, a touch of background toast and graphite. The most massive, biggest, concentrated, and structured of any of the Jacques Perrins, but it is still 5-10 years away from full maturity. It has great intensity and is extraordinary to taste, but it is not a lot of fun to drink ... if you know what I mean. In any event, this is a potentially perfect wine.
