1959 Federico Paternina Gran Reserva, Rioja
Bid on this bottle of 1959 Federico Paternina Gran Reserva, Rioja. What does a 48-year-old wine taste like? Not too many of us will ever be in a position to answer that question, 1) because wines from the 1960s and earlier are incredibly rare to find in the marketplace, and 2) they tend to cost a small fortune, even if they hail from an uneven vintage and a mediocre estate. Well, this old Gran Reserva from a historically great producer in Spain comes from a very good year for winemaking. In short, it bucks the trend in old and rare wine buying, and it would make the ideal gift for a very special birthday boy or girl.

2005 Clos Mogador Priorat
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Clos Mogador Priorat (98RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Clos Mogador is the first wine in Spain entitled to the new classification of 'Vi de finca Qualificada'. The estate is 20 hectares composing a single vineyard. The Garnacha wines are 80+ years of age while the other varieties (Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah) have been planted since the early 1980s. Average yields are under 10 hectoliters per hectare and only 2000 cases are produced. The winery has never purchased outside fruit. The wine is deep purple-colored with a superb bouquet of toasty oak, pencil lead, mineral, blackberry and black cherry. This leads to an opulent, dense, packed, structured wine with 6-8 years of aging potential. Super-concentrated, sweetly-fruited, and complex, this tour de force of a wine will drink well from 2012 to 2040. (JM)" (02/2008)

2004 Alion (Vega Sicilia) Ribera del Duero (OWC)
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2004 Alion (Vega Sicilia) Ribera del Duero (OWC - 96RP, 92ST, 92WE) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bodegas Alion was started by the renowned estate of Vega Sicilia in 1991. Grapes are sourced from vineyards next to the winery and from Vega Sicilia’s own vineyards at Valbuena. Eighteen hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) form the actual Alion estate. The 2004 Alion is inky purple-colored with an alluring perfume of toasty oak, lavender, violets, mineral, blackberry, and blueberry compote. This is followed by a full-bodied, rich, opulent, wine with incipient complexity, and notes of licorice, mocha, and espresso emerging on the palate. The lengthy finish is pure and persistent. 2001 Vega Sicilia "Valbuena" Ribera del Duero
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2001 Vega Sicilia "Valbuena" Ribera del Duero (93RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Valbuena offering is a brilliant introduction to the winery. The 2001 is especially good because all of the wine normally reserved for Unico went into this bottling. It has a similar personality to the 2002 but with more of everything as if it has been on an extended workout regimen. Youthful in appearance and with classic aromatics, it has the extract and the structure to blossom for 6-8 years and drink well for another 20. " (02/2007)

2003 Alión (Vega Sicilia) Ribera del Duero
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2003 Alión (Vega Sicilia) Ribera del Duero (96RP, 92W&S, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The good news is that the 2003 Alion is even better than the 2002. It has a similar personality but with more depth and concentration as well as structure. The ripe tannins suggest much more will be revealed with another 6-8 years in the bottle. It will drink well for 15+ years thereafter. (JM)" (02/2007)
